- pyro116, on 10/12/2007, -5/+32Wozniak's comment for Blossom: "This would only be remotely entertaining if the plant was marijuana or opium and when you did certain things like actually work, you killed your crop. Maybe you could make virtual cash and compete online for the best cash crop. In order to grow the weed and heroin you have to browse certain web sites that would require you be smoking weed to start with; like the Microsoft.com Vista developer site."
- trekkie, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19Honestly the only thing I can't believe got this far is the flower application
- unfinity, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14I absolutely have to agree on Cookbook. Easily something I would pay money for (and isn't that really what this is about?).
A lot of the complaints about Cookbook are of the "I'm not organized enough with my meal planning to use this" variety - and I think the strength of Cookbook is that IT will help my wife and I plan out our meals in advance, do up the shopping list automatically for us, and help us try out new dishes. It has my vote, and if it wins it has my cash. - johnred, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12@rhesuspieces00
Here's your link doubter:
http://mydreamapp.com/judges/view/43/ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Ok, so I'll concede that Cookbook's not the most "exciting" of the bunch and doesn't have a super slick gui, but it's head and shoulders above the rest for practicality. In terms of which app would have the greatest impact on my daily life, it got my vote.
On the less practical, but innovative and fun side, I like Blossom and Atmosphere. It would be very important for both those (especially Atmosphere), though, to be implemented well and not suck up resources since they'd run all the time in the background.
I'm still skeptical about the implentation of Hijack. The After Effects demo looked great, but getting it to work with the different protocols and layouts of all the forums out there might be a bit more difficult. I'd love to see it, but don't think it's feasible. - ElectricGrandpa, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13But atmosphere is SO useless...
- ElectricGrandpa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I still really don't understand what's so impressive about atmosphere... It's almost completely useless...
- Quix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10If there has to be a winner, I'm hoping Cookbook is it. Like unfinity, it's definitely something I'd pay money for.
That said, there are several great concepts among the finalists. I'd hate to see some of them disappear entirely. I hope more than one of these end up getting developed even if they don't "win." Hey, even the losers on American Idol get record contracts, right? :)
I have to say I was dubious about this whole "My Dream App" experiment, but I think it was a great success. It was an exciting process and the site development was fantastic. I hope this becomes a regular event. - themulf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I would love to see Steve Jobs comments. I'm sure they would be harsh, then comment on the application's role in the world, and then he make you want to buy a MacBook Pro, even if you already have one.
- MoofTheStoof, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9This one of the handful of men who created the personal computer as we know it... The last man to design and engineer a mass produced business and personal computer - OS and all - COMPLETELY BY HIMSELF... and you don't think he's a visionary?
I'd say let him have his opinions. He's certainly earned them, and we should think twice before lightly dismissing them. - MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The one I was really hoping to see stay in the competition was "Ground Control". I've never been a big fan of the OS X Dock as having a Finder Window open and Expose' for access at any time is almost (note I said almost) as easy. Ground Control took the best bits from the Windows Task Bar (one of the few parts of Windows I think is superior to the Mac OS) and put it on steroids. Dashboard is inconvenient as it's an entirely different environment and the modules that were listed would make this great.
The only downside would be all the Windows fanboys screaming "COPYCAT!", but for something as easy and useful as Ground Control, I could live with it. - teckjunkie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9My vote would go towards whistler. http://www.stratfordisland.com/whistler/
It seems like an innovative idea. You humm a song and it puts it in instrumental form.
Or I guess you could vote for an app where you watch plants grow, or a cookbook. - machine117, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Tell me about it! That app would be completely useless to the average guy (the prime market), but just imagine if your boss/principal saw that...they'd demand it on every computer so they can monitor who's making progres...It's a scary thought for me, unless I could somehow fool it into thinking browsing digg and watching stupid youtube movies is productive.
- brfuk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Whistler is intended to have auto-correction of almost every musical element if you so desire.
It's also not just about Whistling. Tapping, drumming, beatboxing, humming, singing, transcribing melodies & tuning instruments. - johnred, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Um...are you suggesting that the apps should be developed before the winners are declared?
I don't think you understand how the contest works. Maybe you should look into it further and get the basics down before continuing your repeated trolling. - Quix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I'm confused. I hadn't heard of MacGourmet before, so I checked it out. Are the two somehow related? Because the screenshot of the upcoming v.2 of MacGourmet displays the same image and recipe as the Cookbook prototype. Very strange. Just an unfortunate coincidence? Or is one intentionally parroting the other?

http://www.michaeldupuis.com/TheSoftwareUnderground/uploaded_images/MacGourmetScreenSnapz010-755801.png - nocre, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Personally, Cookbook and then Whistler is who I'd like to see win. Blossom and Atmosphere both appear to be two of the absolute most useless applications I've ever seen. And, despite their design, there's probably little chance they wouldn't suck up resources at least to a noticeable amount.
My girlfriend is a chef, graduated from culinary school. She finds the app (Cookbook) really interesting and believes anyone involved with culinary school would love it. So, you've possibly already a market for it in that area.
And I agree. It really is the most practical, and it has my vote... since I can't vote for Desktop Wars. :( - angelp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You're only voting for one?
I think the judges this are a lot better than the last round. It seemed like the last judges made their comments after looking at a summary of each app for about 2 minutes. - superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4All modern applications actually stem from detailed UML diagrams found on a scroll of unkown origin back in the 20's. This scroll is composed of a semi-metallic paper and is hypothisized to be of alien design due to some cryptic script in the margins that could only have been written by a being with no less than three opposable thumbs.
For some time IBM held control of this document, however during OS/2 talks Bill Gates accidentally stumbled on the chamber where the scroll was kept and took it for is own. He was able to derive applications from it for quite a while (Bob was one of the few misteps, an attempt to interpret a particularily cryptic section of the document with non-standard UML symbols) before Jobs was able to complete his tunnel from the NeXT building to the chamber where it was kept and make away with it, shutting down NeXT immediatley after and re-taking control of Apple as a vehicle to deliver applications from.
Jobs natural gift for interpreting cryptic geek talk of any langauge into plain description enabled him to have the greatest success so far deriving new applications from the scroll. Currently the location is unknown but legend holds it is stored in a bamboo grove with exactly 1,984 stalks of even height and guarded by four Samuri - one for each season of the year. Even Jobs himself is not allowed access, instead on request portions of the document are hand-drawn by a loyal mute with eidetic memory who was allowed to see the document once but without the intelligence to comprehend the document contents. - aristotle0dude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Macgourmet has been around a lot longer than the my dream app contest. If there is any similarity, I would guess that the Cookbook guy copies ideas from Macgourmet.
- PandaParts, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Blossom is a productivity tool that encourages you to stay on your game. The problem here is that hardcore folks hate the idea of productivity. Instead we hear "Go magic whistling app or the one that tells me the weather!". Votes by the ignorant for the ignorant.
Dream apps indeed...for those that fear the sun. - superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4That's the one thing that bothers me about HiJack, it seems cool but ripping text out of forums without also displaying the ads is kind of bad - I mean the forums would support RSS if they could get by without ads.
I don't think it's technically all that impossible though, a lot of sites use very similar forum software so you could probably work up a plugin infrastructure to read any given site. The site if annoyed could easily tweak content to throw it off though, which is why it would have to be done in such a way as to make the site owner OK with people using it... - leucippus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Portal is a sync utility, not a backup solution, so I don't see Portal ever competing with SuperDuper or any other backup app. Portal mainly goes up against ChronoSync, Synk, and dotMac Sync.
Portal brings file syncing, application syncing (without need for any app specific plugins), and pretty cool graphics. Whether that is of any use to you or anybody else if an open question. I've got two Macs, so I'd use it. Then again, I'm biased. ;-) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7lol. I'm not voting for that; I can't whistle. Limited use app.
- MattL920, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@rhesus:
Try clicking on the link and looking at the site, where that's clearly one of the comments under Blossom before you open your mouth. Jackass. - joe90210, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5I can't believe people are wasting votes on that HiJack nonsense, it will NEVER work reliably, the only way to do it is to get all the messageboard software to offer standard support for this app and you'll have to add a space to display forum ads, that is the only way he'll even start getting support for it, very few messageboards are going to accept havign their content taken and displayed without the user ever visiting their site and especially without seeing the ads on the site, they'll be working day and night to break support everytime he adds it
- nocre, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Perhaps the voting is already done OO and MacGourmet v2.0 -is- Cookbook.
I know, that's likely not even possible, but it just reminded me of some of the competitions you see on TV. For example, say you've an acting/modeling competition and the winner is given a role in an ad for some company. Then, before the competition has concluded, you see one of the participants in said ad... - joe90210, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2then announce a suspiciously similar app during the next MacWorld and have Mac fanboys write about how Apple invented it first in 1934
- leucippus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hijack is also a very useful/practical app. Both, if done well, would add a lot to the current Mac shareware market and make many of our Windows friends jealous.
I personally lean towards Portal, but I'd be happy no matter which three apps win. Atmosphere would bother me somewhat, since it seems like a missed opportunity. We've got such great developers, why not challenge them a bit! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'm still pulling for Whistler and Atmosphere. I could care less which one the 3rd is.
Edit: since I'm a foodie and love to cook, I'm going with Cookbook as my 3rd choice. - mac4evan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1just to finish up...
I am not a huge Portal fan because of the wealth of backup options out there. Although the Core Animation use seems great, it just doesn't equal what "My Dream App" would be like. - allarise, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Here's to hoping Woz, Allard, and Kawasaki are whistlers....
- happylandfill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The MacGourmet 2.0 screenshot was posted on September 27, as a tongue-in-cheek reference to Cookbook. The original Cookbook mock-up was posted in August.

That would explain why Invision Power Board (and most likely vBulletin [not sure]) both have RSS support, right?
[ for those for you uninformed, IPB and vB are the two of the most commonly used forum softwares there are ] - thunderer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Atmosphere sounds awesome, but I'd need more functionality to justify the resource use. Portal sounds pretty interesting, but I'm not sure I transfer things enough to get any real use out of it.
I really liked the incentives they gave for voting. Overflow is great, and I just sent in my order for a t-shirt. - icandiggittoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Portal is the BEST dreamapp left.
- nocre, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It is the same thing, but I still believe a whole host of people will raise complaints over having the content taken from their site. It could and would be likened to the practice of hotlinking. If this enables you to altogether ignore the site, as joe90210 mentioned, then this argument will become all the more vehement.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+7Jeez. After reading Woz's comments, it sounds like he's got a serious case of "elitest old fart syndrome". :(
- mac4evan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just feel that Blossom will never be a commercial success. And for that I do not feel like time and money should be spent on it. As for Atmosphere, like I said above, it is a good idea and could sell, but not as much as Cookbook and Whistler (I'll explain below) and Hijax. Atmosphere to me could be like on of those cool sharware apps you hear about from a friend or through VersionTracker. Cookbook is not the most original idea... Yes. Is it the most developed... Yes (Just a little more than Hijax) So I had to vote AGAIN for it. Hijax has a huge crowd and the interface is so Apple and definitely shows-off OS X's elegance. So that got my vote AGAIN. And I did decide to vote for Whistler because as far-fetched as the app seems at first, if your just read about it some more and some or the judges comments you will realize that would not only be really fun, but it would also be one of those apps that Windows users would look at and say "Damn I wish I had a Mac!" "Look at the kind of stuff they can do." So I gave my third and final vote to Whistler.
- whiplashgrin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, is it past someones bedtime? Please. Things that motivate me to stay on my game - cash and prizes, knowledge of a job well done, respect and admiration of my peers, yes. Weed on my monitor, no.
- mac4evan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0With regards to the comments on Hijax and how it is a waste of a vote.
Yes some of your concerns are valid, but then I think that maybe this app starts slow and then becomes a real hit. Also Hijax has potential while Blossom, Portal, and Atmosphere do not (to me) for the long-haul. - theboohi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I wouldn't mind a free Windows port of Atmosphere (or something like it). It isn't that useful, but it is kinda nice to look at it.
- mac4evan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I meant sync not backup (sometimes their functionality seems to always go hand-in-hand)
Being an Apple Retail employee, I know how hard it is to sell someone on .Mac and this is why I believe that Apple is already taking big steps to completely re-think their syncing solution that comes with .Mac as it is now. The same way they are completely changing the Apple .Mac webmail.
So basically that is why I just don't feel that it is truly worthy of being not only my own but also the Mac community's "Dream App". - mac4evan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0personally the three apps that I believe are worthy enough and most likely to be bought and sold at the Apple Retail Stores (I work in the Columbia, MD one) are Cookbook, Hijax, and Whistler.
Atmosphere is a very VERY cool app I know...
HOWEVER it would sell well as a shareware program online.
I just don't feel it has the long-run potential.
And Blossom... DONT GET ME STARTED!!!!! - (If you can't already tell, I HATE it!!!) - rdoger6424, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1they need to know what "new" features to include in the next version of windows, duh!
- Dithre, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"I think this idea sucks!"
- DoMaurier, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Given that Connoisseur and MacGourment (version 2.0 isn't about to come out) already fill the recipe app space nicely I don't really see the need for CookBook. And that's without mentioning the oodles of great websites for recipes and all the actual cookbooks people have in their kitchen. It's a pretty app, but it's simply isn't needed.
- Quix, on 10/12/2007, -9/+6"how often do you get the chance to see a top-level Microsoft exec (father of the Xbox/zune) participating in a Mac contest"
Once is too often. - Quix, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2"After reading Woz's comments, it sounds like he's got a serious case of "elitest old fart syndrome"
Agreed. Love the Woz, but let's face it, a software visionary he is not. -
