- colincornaby, on 04/09/2008, -5/+66Yay for wireless cancer!
- takamalak, on 04/09/2008, -2/+61Let's see some wireless docks for laptops now.
- gravityboard, on 04/09/2008, -4/+56If mobile device manufacturers wanted consumers charging multiple devices from the same charger, they easily could have adopted an industry standard using traditional metal-on-metal chargers. This, however, is not in their best interests. Apple doesn't include a power adapter with iPods anymore partially because they stand to make money when it's purchased as an accessory. They don't want their customers buying the Motorola charger to go with a new cell phone and then being able to charge an iPod or digital camera from it as well.
Really cool invention though, even if it isn't a new thing. - newstart, on 04/09/2008, -0/+32Ok so is iPhone charging wirelessly gonna be offered by Adobe?
- jjustice, on 04/09/2008, -8/+31If that won't fry your brain, I don't know what will ;-)
- inactive, on 04/09/2008, -2/+24Now available, Adobe Creative Suite 3, Upgrades and New Licenses...
- Blitz_G, on 04/09/2008, -2/+20Sorry That was me....
- digitalpencil, on 04/09/2008, -0/+18Actually, it was Callan in the early 19th century who began successfully experimenting with wireless energy broadcast although Tesla is arguably the grandaddy of this technology. We saw a few examples of wireless charging at this years CeBIT which, weren't all that impressive in honesty.
Wireless energy transfer will ultimately revolutionise modern technology although doing so safely, and efficiently over long distances is a mean feat and not one I imagine we will see recognised for many years. - baylat, on 04/09/2008, -2/+18This is nothing to Nikola Tesla.
- battletops, on 04/09/2008, -7/+20There's something in the air.
- and303, on 04/09/2008, -1/+13Let's just throw the iPhone into a hardly related topic and watch it float to the top story section.
Extra credit: Put an Adobe symbol up there FTW. - mb3581, on 04/09/2008, -1/+13Didn't a company that was working on this technology just tank the other day?
http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/03/splashpower-can ... - trghpy, on 04/09/2008, -1/+11It works for my tooth brush.
It'd just makes sense. - t0ny, on 04/09/2008, -0/+9He is not referring to speed. He is ether transporting a donkey or a fat person.

- themastersb, on 04/09/2008, -0/+8I just bought a toothbrush for $15 that uses that.
- Archaic1, on 04/09/2008, -0/+8epic fail
- fkr3, on 04/09/2008, -0/+8WIreless laptops isn't as buzzworthy as only talking about the ramifications for iPhones.
- h4mx0r, on 04/09/2008, -1/+8so you block digg thumbnails?

- HonoredMule, on 04/09/2008, -0/+6We already have the cancer part. It's the future now!
- Austin7687, on 04/09/2008, -0/+6Next up, the Tesla Coil!
- mkling176, on 04/09/2008, -3/+8Drugs!!!!
- Sivvy, on 04/09/2008, -0/+5As an engineer I'd say this ever happing in reality is highly unlikely. Either they're using a very wasteful way to transport energy using an isotropic radiator (which would allow you to charge your iphone anywhere in a short vicinity of the charger), or they're using a slightly more efficient concentrated radiator which would limit you to charging the device in a much smaller but longer cone-like area (kind of like the power distribution of a person talking). Both of these methods are very inefficient powerwise.
- CySailor, on 04/09/2008, -0/+5This is irritating. The idea of a wireless charging pad for small devices has been around for years. Several companies have tried to produce it…. And ran short on funding.
Now because a company might produce a charging pad that may with iPod.... and every other MP3 player... this suddenly Apple News and Innovation. I am completely sick of the mac fan boi hype machine on the web. - clesch, on 04/09/2008, -2/+6whoop, the iPhone will be able to charge wirelessly... but you'll still have to sync it via the USB cable!
- and303, on 04/09/2008, -0/+4Are you smoking a pipe in a rocking chair with a laptop in one hand and a glass of brandy in the other?
- lordenlil, on 04/09/2008, -4/+8Invisible fields of 120v electricity being beamed from port to battery. From now on it's "Don't taze me, Apple!"
- jacenat, on 04/09/2008, -1/+5high end?
i remember owning a electric toothbrush years ago that featured inductive charging.
it's not that it's that complicated ... - ciriarte, on 04/09/2008, -0/+4Wires or it didn't happen er...
- codelogic, on 04/09/2008, -1/+5The process is called inductive charging. Many high end electric toothbrushes already come with such docks.
Read about it:

- etrigan30, on 04/09/2008, -1/+5Yet another technology post that has little or NOTHING to do with the iphone but it is mentioned anyway and gets dugg to *****.
- robbh66, on 04/09/2008, -0/+4There were "charging pads" that were around before 2005 commercially. They sucked though because it took forever to charge, they were expensive, and it still had to sit on a damn pad. At least with a wire you can still use the thing while it's charging.
The guy who comes up with wireless power that just requires you to be in the same room, without scrambling our brains, will make a billion. - lovecss, on 04/09/2008, -1/+5No, I'm sorry Shaun...
- ravage86, on 04/09/2008, -1/+5Except the iphone is probably closer to 4 volts, and extremely low amperage.
- smakusdod, on 04/09/2008, -0/+3"May" being the operative word, and of course this word on the Internet means "won't ever".
- RadiatedAnt, on 04/09/2008, -1/+4Hooray for Cancer!
- Protoss, on 04/09/2008, -0/+3They could have a wireless charger built specifically for each device. Say Apple has a frequency that all their chargers use, while Motorola has another.
- Observer001, on 04/09/2008, -0/+3Dugg for Tesla-derived tech.
- stoanhart, on 04/09/2008, -1/+4You can get them for like $12.
- fullstop102, on 04/09/2008, -0/+3So, This is an old story that has been talked about for ages. The only thing that made me read it was that it said iPhone in it. Then the article isn't about iPhones its about all electronical gadgets. Why do people think there is a need to put iPhone in the title.
This technology is good but I think there is a good chance it will allow us to waste even more electric than before. Always on or just from transferring electric into magnetic field and then back. Seems like a good idea but I probably wouldn't want one. - iPissExcellence, on 04/09/2008, -0/+3I HAVE NO IDEA BECAUSE IM NORWEGIAN! WOHOO
- iPissExcellence, on 04/09/2008, -0/+3yeah, he wanted to power the whole world with those towers! then he died.
- lukas88, on 04/10/2008, -0/+2So do microwaves but I don't see you sticking your head in one of those.
- saisumimen, on 04/09/2008, -1/+3Quiet! You want him to realize that the Sharper Image ripped him off?
- smrekar, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2My fertility?
- musicphreke, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2Yes, but read the whole article on your own link, specifically: "...we never really saw any commercial-ready products emerge from its [Splashpower] labs, while companies like WildCharge and eCoupled have managed to at least produce demo-quality gear." So obviously these guys have made more advances towards something realistic than them.
- undersky, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2next technology in battery recharging will be microwave oven: put your iphone in microwave oven for 1 minute and it's charged!
