- knellotron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+41: The fact that WINE is being ported to OS X on intel was announced by the Wine crew months ago, immediately after Apple announced the transition.
2: The hoax/rumor is that Wine would be natively supported as part of OS X 10.5.
3: Darwine isn't a new project, it's been around 2 years.
No digg, but too late! it's on the front page already. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wow. How long did it take you to realize that? WINE has been around on PPC for quite some time.
- relinquish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2harlegun:
1. Wine is not an emulator.
2. Running wine is not the same as running windows.
3. How many first person shooters do you know for OSX? - trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Also as opposed to the hoax claims this is not being done by Apple it is being done by the open source community.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1..not that it actually works mind you. :(
- kuchdawg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It does work a little....not with XP programs though......and yes Darwine is a port for OS X, and it has already been ported for Intel & OS X since the Dev PC's...just not a final release
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2OLD
- ksaad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's mainly made for a purpose, and it's about running Windows' apps, not the OS.
And there're still many missing essentials for OS 10. Not everyone uses what you do. - thbohn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1But I guess you need X11 to run WINE on Mac OS X. So it will be no different from the "normal" version for X11.
- lezombi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0no tiger support?
- ksaad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0buckdog05, RedBox is a core service, you can consider it as Rosetta, but not an identical nor an equivalent.
I think It was mainly developed to maintain Windows ports to Mac OS and NeXT, and more likely to be a test and comparison platform for Apple developers to make such great applications as you know already.
There're many rumors about RedBox to be implemented in OS 10.5, and now i see something else, which is Darwine. It really sounds good because i'm already familiar with WINE, and it really played nicely still.
I have nothing to tell about RedBox than i already mentioned. - buckdog05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Elaborate on this RedBox Please. Does it ahve anything to do with running Windows programs.
- ksaad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So after all, it's something completely different than RedBox, that Apple was working as a secret project since the merge of NeXT.
I wonder how cool it would be, there gotta be some huge advantages as i read somewhere, it'll be built in OS 10.5, i have no idea. But it would be really a super cool feature ! - dustPuppy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1" How many shooters do you actually know of for Mac OS X?"
Halo
Quake 1
Quake 2
Quake 3
Return To Castle Wolfenstein
RTCW: Enemy Territory

Go to Aspyr and check out an assload more. Mac is definitley being included in the gaming community. Not as fast, but it is being included.

- jutendouji, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hmmm... I'm trying to install X11 on my Mac but without success. Can anyone walk me through it please?
- hordak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0DITTO to what knellotron said. The Wine developer community has been on this for quite some time; IIRC, immediately since it was confirmed that there would be Intel-based Macs.
- konspence, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@dotuplink
There is X11 for OS X, it's required to install OpenOffice.org. - booc0mtaco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Maybe some apple developers will help out, and get that Wine-Win32 compatibility up to Insanely Great.
So long microsoft, welcome to the new world. - jutendouji, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nevermind, I found it.
- hadak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0can i have my digg back please? it was pre-emptive.
this release explicitly states that the program will NOT run windows apps. why did they release it then? - dotuplink, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wait there is no X11 for mac os x 10.4.4 right? then we cant run it on tiger???
- relinquish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Darwine HAS been ported to OSx86. Only problem is that it only seems to work on early developer versions of OSx86. http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.php/Darwine_tutorial
- relinquish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not that I support fake news, but your hostname gives it away. I mean c'mon, you couldve atleast registered appleinsider.tk or something.
- trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I didn't realize that this got to the front page ( last I checked it was buried and I thought it would stay that way) so I may be commenting a little late but:
1: I know that this is old news, it was on digg 266 days ago and I have been watching it develop ever since. I submitted this because when the hoax was on the front page I looked at all the comments and none of them mentioned darwine so I figured not many people knew about it (looks like at least 900) and I figured that publicity mite also speed up development.
2: The reason they released a version that could not run windows executables was because it CAN allow you to compile, from source code, an application made for windows, so that it runs in OS X on a PowerPC.
3: I knew that wine compiled for the x86 dev kits but that is not very relevant to most people and the official stance of the darwine project is that it is not yet supported.
4: If there are any Apple developers reading this I hope that you contribute to this project if you can and I hope this link helped publicity. - sfacets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is so, so, sooooo old.

- dustPuppy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The ones above are just my favorites for now.... I'm sure there's some out there that i've never heard of
- oepapel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Wine is OK I suppose, but a port of Cedega would be most useful. "
Actually, a port of Windows by Microsoft would be MOST useful! :)
Porting Cedega to OS/X would mean a significant amount of work to get it seamless. X11 on the mac is not a solution for either Cedega OR Wine. They both need a quartz or OpenGL backend. Wine is working on a quartz backend but it is very alpha still.
Cedega is interesting in that if the world starting screaming for an OS/X version, they would write it since the direction of development of the project is determined by user vote on their website. The subscription service, however, might be a deal breaker for some(most?). - Grodius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0With the change to the new architecture i'd expect far better programs to surface than PowerPC. Wine has been out for a while and really isnt that solid, so i'm waiting for a good program.
- stonezone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Mirc runs fine on my dell 10.4.1 osx86 install (at least it did 3 months ago when I last tried it).
- mrgreen4242, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Isn't Cedega a branch of WINE? Wine native for OS X will be awesome, it will help Mac adoption rates.
- mpeters13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"1. Wine is not an emulator.

Care to continue? - sud0n1m, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I started a contest to get dual booting up and running. http://digg.com/apple/Contest_to_Boot_Windows_XP_on_Intel_Mac
- atheken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Never ceases to amaze me how incredibly ignorant people are when it comes to Macs.
Never ceases to amaze me how incredibly arrogant some Mac users can be (including myself at times). - phoneboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not a huge surprise. The folks at Codeweavers who bring you Crossover Office have stated they are working on a version of Crossover Office for the Intel Macs. Several WINE developers are employed by Codeweavers.
- deathguppie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The argument is "why?"
The answer, seamless web integration. Being able to run whatever app you want wherever you want to without being penalized for running the OS of choice. rnrnNow that Vista will be comming out with XP code being run in very much the same way as wine does on *nix. Most of the modern code production for Vista will be .NET based_Indigo_Avalon.
That will most probably mean that the old code base will stabalize allowing for WINE to actually be able to hit it's mark (eventually).
The point is, scince .NET is now available for linux, (aka MONO) we all stand a good chance of having application utopia. Where I can run what you run and you can run what I run. With the exception of a few OS specific applications.
So in effect WINE on OSX means that we will be able to go full circle. - TheRealStyro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wine/Cedega on OS X would be awesome. I could run some/most of the applications that I have already purchased and registered and not have to purchase new native OS X apps until I can understand the benefits.
Gotta be patient and let things settle before I buy a new Intel iMac... - Mjolniir, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Wine is OK I suppose, but a port of Cedega would be most useful. The ONLY use I have for WIndows is to play DX games and Cedega works amazingly well. I can't think of a Windows app that I would want to use on my Mac, other than games.
http://www.transgaming.com/products_linux.php - Harlequn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Why would a Macintosh user want to run Windows and have it taking up a bunch of hard disk real estate? There are plenty of productive apps on Mac OS X. Office is on Mac OS X. Photoshop, etc. I don't get it. This is going to be a big flop. Nobody wants to be penalized running in emulation mode.
- trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2PowerPC not power PC sorry
- cdreiling, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I can't wait to run useful programs like notepad and minesweeper. But really this has been around, the only thing I ever got from it was error messages, so it was like running windows.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Simply put.... Why do I want to put a bunch of crap on my mac?
- mikeazorin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0I really liked my story better. http://obeysleepy.hostiz.com/article.php.html You guys are so gullible.
