- macman06, on 10/12/2007, -23/+144That guy that started My Dream Windows App is a complete and total *****. The project will hopefully fail, I'd hate to see a legal case come out of this.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -26/+116My dream windows application? A working OS.
- realpolitik, on 10/12/2007, -5/+74All you need to know about the guys who started My Dream Windows App (MDWA) is that moments after their site was mentioned on the original MDA site, they got banned for posting homophobic comments to the MDA forum. Minutes later, they posted on MDWA, saying that they were banned for raising issues with Cookbook.
- msikma, on 10/12/2007, -12/+72You're right, just take a look at the site. The first blog post is him saying that My Dream App was useless nonsense, and then the second post is him complaining about how badly he and his are being treated by the Mac community. I think he didn't make that site so he could get a community to create great Windows apps, but rather to bolster his own ego.
- SpacemanSpiff, on 10/12/2007, -5/+57Oh no! You just made me unknowingly format my floppy disk. How will I ever recover?
- msikma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+45It's not a bad idea at all. I support anyone trying to set up a community dedicated to making great software. It's just that I don't support the person who's doing it, as he's doing it wrongly.
- jessejoedotcom, on 10/12/2007, -4/+45"The "Real" Dream App Site"
I wonder why people are being mean to him. Poor baby. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+46P.S. Don't sign this guy up to loads of Apple mailing lists that would be a terrible and unfunny thing to do, shame on you all.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+36It's actually a *good* idea, it's just that it's being horribly implemented by an unprofessional person who seems to lack a clear vision and guidance.
His strategy seems to be to register a domain, put up a generic site, and then hope the community is populated by experts, engineers, and creative folks. The initial posts and such show horrible bias and pettiness, not many top-notch people want to be associated with something like that. A better approach (IMO) would have been to start in more of a stealth mode and build some critical mass before his "launch". That doesn't mean you have to have pre-selected all the judges, participants, etc., but SURELY this wonderfully smart guy must have a handful of friends and supporters in the developers community that could help him populate the forums with good ideas and constructive conversations?
MWDA is one of those sites that will gradually taper off, and it's too bad because under the proper direction it could have been successful. - Phocion55, on 10/12/2007, -30/+63Non-Mac users being treated badly by the Mac Community???? Get out of town.
- Snowcone, on 10/12/2007, -6/+39What a tool. Talk about making all windows users look like morons.
- dazzy20034, on 10/12/2007, -5/+36Hey, don't tar us with the same brush...I can see this whole thing is b.s but i don't see how because its based around windows that effects my sense of style?
Im not digging this simply because i don't think it deserves the publicity, bad or good. Leave it alone and it will disappear, which is the best thing for it in my mind. Would have loved to seen a my dream app for windows (was always envious of the projects being developed) but this is pathetic. - modsuperstar, on 10/12/2007, -24/+52This whole contest is inherently flawed. The difference between the Windows and Mac communities is that the Mac platform inspires passion from their users and application creators, and is often apparent in the final product. The fact that the Macintosh is a smaller platform brings the community closer together as people often feel the need to defend their different choice in platform. Windows doesn't seem to have this same cohesive glue that keeps the community close-knit. While it is possible that the end result may be something worthwhile, I doubt the community will rally around it in the same way the Mac community did for it's version of this competition.
- spikemay, on 10/12/2007, -10/+39hes now braggin about hits on his web site, d'you think the moron is aware that most of the hits he will be getting are from mac users? ahaha
- bloodmoney, on 10/12/2007, -6/+32@ modsuperstar
There are plenty of programmers out there that get fired up about programming Windows and there are plenty of products out there that show it. Let's keep things in perspective. - riceweb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26Actually, since a lot of the development in the community is already done by the community, I think My Dream Linux App would be a bit redundant ;)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -11/+35@ flag564
Is it my imagination or do you go to every Mac related thread and just troll the crap out of it? - tjkombo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+28iTunes 7 is buggy on PC not on Mac. I have used both and I think what he meant by promoting creativity is the community as a whole. Being a recent converte one of the first things I noticed about the difference in a hardcore windows use and a hardcore Mac user is the undeniable feeling of being a part of something. The Mac OSX is a little more inspirational in the way it flows, but it is really the community that the system draws to it that makes it so creative. It draws very creative people too it and that in turn allows for many creative products. Don't get me wrong, there are some crappy OSX apps, but there are a ton of gems out there. When I was a PC only user I never got excited about little apps made by small software houses, now I get excited every time I hear a new one, and I actually PURCHASE them now. It is something about that Mac community that just supports this behavior. As a switcher of 10 months now, I must say I have really enjoyed my venture so far.
- msikma, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23It exists: http://www.cygwin.com/
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20http://mydreamwindowsapp.com/
site seems to be down or rather taken offline. - stingthebee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17MDA had their ***** together though. They got real Mac developers on board BEFORE launching the site, got free apps to give away to the community of voters, got great feedback from the community and those that are in the forefront of the community like Kevin Rose, Leo Laporte and Steve Wosniak and made a fun site to be apart of. Are the apps "Dream" apps - probably not, but the MDA site never really took itself THAT seriously.
This guy comes out of the gate stealing an idea from someone and then pissing on the guys for starting the idea. Seems a little strange that the idea is good enough for him to steal, but not good enough to praise. I am not a Macboy or Winboy. I own both operating systems on my my MacBook Pro, have a Dell, dabbled in Linux. I don't care about the politics of OS. How childish?
I think we need to be more positive in the community (Mac and PC) in general. Why does everything have to be negative? - PsychoDeli, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19I like the idea of a site to develop a dream app for windows, just a pity that it had to be this guy that did it. If he started the site, gave credit to the My Dream App guys and tried to improve the concept rather than insulting them it might have worked. I know I would have supported it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20Well, he says he has a real job. So it seems that he can both bag groceries AND make a killer web site ;)
- Murdats, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22I believe he meant A:[slash]format
which would launch the format tool from your floppy drive, assuming you booted into dos
this would also just spit out a message saying please tell me what and how to format
(I know see that digg parses the slash and removes it) - Roger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17He's gonna code all the apps himself. All in VB6.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -24/+40Something for the mac being copied by the Windows Community.....it couldn't possibly be...
- icespectre, on 10/12/2007, -7/+22"We invite developers, artists, UI designers, people with brilliant ideas and everyone else to join us to create something really *special and unique* [emphasis added]."
In a nutshell; everyone other than the current My Dream Windows App team members. - Phocion55, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Dude there are some killer apps out there built with VB6.....like a Fahrenheit to Celsius temperature converter.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -12/+26The guy sounds like a typical MS developer: "WE know what you need. You don't have to tell us. And even if you DO tell us what you need, if it deviates from what we say you need, YOU'RE WRONG!"
God, I can't wait until I get my MBP. - guytoronto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Shouldn't a "My Dream Windows App" really be "My Dream EXE?"
- PathDaemon, on 10/12/2007, -15/+28OK, try STEREOtypical Windows user.
Copies a Mac idea, sucks at it, and spends all his time whining about how gay the Mac community is. - lowbot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15>that the Mac platform inspires passion from their users and application creators, and is often apparent in the final product.
Some people just like to program/create/solve problems and dont care too much about the platform/language/what's hot. I dont know of any casual computer user who was suddenly inspired to be a cocoa developer because of how shiny OSX is. In my experience the person least likely to get into the 'OS wars' are good developers. Theyre more concerned about laguages, ide's, toolkits, etc. At the end of the day im glad there are mature developers out there because good apps are rare but loudmouth fanboys are a dime a dozen. - skunkworker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14This is gonna fail miserably, horrible support & site , some teenager sitting at home doing nothing
- SpacemanSpiff, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Yeah, I was envious of My Dream App because it really did bring out some great ideas. I would love to see a contest for Windows, but this is not the way to do it.
- angelp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13It needs to be done by someone else. This buffoon is not going to get anyone of quality to contribute.
- tinkafoo, on 10/12/2007, -15/+26It's spelled "you".
- chrismcelligott, on 10/12/2007, -32/+43Seriously, the guy buys a domain and installs community server - could this thing be anymore generic? (Loving that default theme) Typical windows users... no style or class.
- nixfu, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17
PREDICTION on first voting selection for My Dream Windows App:
1) MAC OSX
2) LINUX
3) ZETA OS
4) I'd rather go back to OS/2
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Considering the finalists were selected based on community feedback and participation *SOMEBODY* must like those apps. Are they all "Dream" apps, maybe not, but I think they all have a solid desire.
Cookbook has gotten a lot of bashing it seems, that is one that I personally *will* buy. I had started to create something similar myself, but of course never completed it. I've had a PC in my kitchen for over 10 years. I like to cook, like to use fresh ingredients, and after working 10 hours a day, the last thing I want to do is figure out what to make for dinner, or what I need to buy, etc. Cookbook would solve a lot of problems and provide value to me, but maybe not others...
Perhaps that is what makes these true "Dream" apps, they're not all mass-market appeal, they are well thought-out and executed *niche* apps that wouldn't otherwise have a chance of being done so completely and professionally. - lonelycanuck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I love how he rants that none of the My Dream App, apps are useful...yet has no clue that they won because the community that voted for them thought they were
- rogersmj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I posted this in their forums, I'll add it here because he'll probably delete it or something:
"This is to the site's administrator.
I think doing a Dream App competition for Windows would have been a great idea, but you've sort of shot it in the foot right out of the gate by, frankly, being a dick about the original MyDreamApp. I don't understand why that was necessary. You could have had a great competition going here, but instead all you've done is invite spamming and hate and -- let's face it -- make yourself look like an immature child by the very fact that you're calling Mac zealots immature, along with all the sniping comments you can't resist making at Macs and the Mac community every other sentence in your "news" posts. I'm pretty sure the people on MyDreamApp didn't spend all their time bitching about how horrible Windows users are. How is that productive? How is what YOU are doing -- creating a hostile environment in everything you post, right down to the "The 'Real' Dream App Site" tagline -- conducive to a good healthy competition? You invited this with your horrible attitude, and now you're whining about how they're not being nice to you. Good job ruining what could have been a cool opportunity for Windows users and developers.
You'll probably ban me for having a rational opinion and not jumping on your "let's hate Macs and be cool" bandwagon, but I don't care, I said what I had to say. For the record, I use all three OSes -- Windows, OS X, and Linux -- regularly, and don't hate any of them. Each have their strengths." - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15I think its safe to say that Windows has traditionally been a business platform, and Mac has been a creative platform. As a Program Manager, this is just the way it is, and when I build development teams I deal with the fact that Windows developers are less visually creative, but more business process aware. And Mac developers are usually better UI designers, better at usability when it comes to new applications and mashups. Mac developers see things more idealistically, and Windows developers see them more historically.
Not a slam, just an observation. - Gardenhead, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14It's always easy to do something after someone has paved the path, then rip them about how they did it, isn't it?
- Dradis, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13It's too bad this ***** has already tainted the idea of Windows My Dream App, as it really is a good idea. If only they had approached the original MDA creators and community with respect and asked for permission to use the MDA idea for windows, as well as trying to work with the MDA community.
Someone mentioned on here that they doubt that the windows community would band together like the mac community did for MDA, and perhaps they wouldn't; however, it would still be interesting to see what was produced. - Slovenian6474, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9"I think doing a Dream App competition for Windows would have been a great idea, but you've sort of shot it in the foot right out of the gate by, frankly, being a dick about the original MyDreamApp."
Sums it all up right there. I'm not a programmer but if i were, i wouldn't want to be part of a site that bashed the "competition" in this way. Further more, he doesn't even have any "dream apps" there but still claims "...similar development method but with better ideas..." He might have a case on the "better ideas" part if he could actually show something for that. - AugustZephyr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10This site is a joke and stephan is a total poseur for trying to copy the mac dream app competition. As a windows user who DOESNT hate macs i look forward to seeing his mac-hating site get dugg into oblivion.
- Quix, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12"@ flag564 Is it my imagination or do you go to every Mac related thread and just troll the crap out of it?" - TheReport
No, not your imagination. You just discovered flag564's lonely little hobby. He's Don Quixote, fighting the evil "fanboys" which turn out to be harmless windmills. Sad, really. - bloodmoney, on 10/12/2007, -18/+26For an OS that doesn't work, there sure is a lot of work being done on it.
- panique, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I think My Dream Windows App would be something that would remove all that clutter from my system registry.
- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10MyDreamAmigaApp.com - come on, guys!
