Windows Media loses ground to Apple H.264
macworld.com — A recent report from Streamingmedia.com suggests that Apple's H.264 media format is gaining significant ground on Microsoft's Windows Media format. Both are still significantly behind RealVideo however.

- solowCX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Real gets too much of a bad reputation. I havn't had any complaints with them since they released RealOne. Their audio streaming is some of the best their is and as long as the server isn't too overloaded their video is good too.

The right way to play back H.264 is with the CoreAVC/CoreAAC filters + any DirectShow player (like MPC, VLC, BSPlayer, ZoomPlayer, etc).
Smooth as buttah, and your CPU will thank you.

But Encoding time isn't only really part of the story, what about the file size? Every time I go to dl.tv and look at the format selections they have to download .WMV is always the smallest, so I get that one.
WMV and all forms of quicktime are really the only formats to bother with. It's a disaster. The player, interface, capabilities are all terrible. You have to dig to make it not launch at start up.
