No H.264 was not developed by Apple. - m99stump, on 07/29/2008, -0/+2H.264 is a standard that many different codecs employ... Divx, Xvid, QuickTime, and probably many more.
That said, hooray for Apple formats :)
Its not OGG, but its nicer for cross platform than WMV by a long shot. - RobotCitizen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The only thing that makes Real video bearable is Real Alternative + Media Player Classic.
- breakneckridge, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Reading comprehension folks:
"Appleās QuickTime H.264 video ENCODING has gained ground on Microsoft Windows Media. The winner, however, was RealVideo."
meaning it's faster at producing video files at comparable qualities and NOT that the final video files load faster or look better for the client the video is streamed to. - budsstud26, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This story description (and article title) is misleading...the study actually compared the *performance* of various codecs, not their market share, as is implied by the description (and to be fair, by the title of the article as well).
- stevex0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ha Ha the guy who posted this got pwned
for REAL!!!1 - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2i didnt bother reading the article last time. but now i see it and ITS NOT ABOUT POPULARITY. ITS ABOUT ENCODING SPEED.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The problem with WMP and REAL are that they dont have live scrubbing. i.e. You cant drag the sliderbar to the spot you want in a movie and see the results in realtime - any performance disadvantage Quicktime has for providing this feature is well worth it IMHO. Once you get used to live scrubbing, its impossible to go back to anything else.
Quicktime was the first media player, and its still by far the best. - levi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Isn't H.264 an open standard. It doesn't really belong to Apple they just license the technology and so can any one else that is why its gaining ground. Even though that has nothing to do with what the article is talking about.

And I'm glad about this, whenever I'm on Windows I have that damn, "Buffering.... Buffering.... Buffering...." screen for ages. - stumpadoodle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I remember the good old days when I didn't know anything and I used to download anime and stuff in real format....ahhhh yes....
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i HATE windows media. "And I'm glad about this, whenever I'm on Windows I have that damn, "Buffering.... Buffering.... Buffering...." screen for ages." YES I HATE WMP!!
anyhow, realplayer is better but not by much. quicktime's .mov is the best. - Rayfound, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1that whole article was a little incoherent... But seriously, who uses RealPlayer? Its the worst virus I've ever gotten.
A friend was installing it on a system a few years back and we were very careful to make sure we unchecked every box and went through every dialogue box to make sure we had stopped all parts of it. We were almost done when we loaded up IE, and BAM! - Homepage had been set to real.com... Bastards. - mavranos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2real what?
- underburn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I havent used real since 1998 :-X
- jjones3535, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There seems to be a lot of Real Player bashing here.
I must say it is utterly and completely justified. - pollicis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Have any of you Real bashers actually tried RMVB lately? It's not all that bad. Take a normal 1 hour tv show, strip the commercials. Dixv/XVID you're looking at 350mb for the avi. RMVB, while not as crisp, is pretty damn good at only 135-150mb. Less than 1/2 the size. Obviously, never, never, never download realplayer. Real Alt + MPC is the way to go. Bash all you want, but I suspect most people here, as they say, haven't tried real since the 1990's, which is sort of a bad foundation to build an informed opinion on. Just my $0.02.
- SniperGX1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1good, death to microsoft proprietary DRM crippled *****
- I8PP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I completely agree with pollicis, RMVB is a brilliant codec - even 10MB encodes of Simpsons episodes are watchable
- mgreenwald, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1H.264 is made by Apple? I had no idea, I just discovered it a few months ago by chance and it is much better then DivX but I have no idea how it compares to Real Video. But I hate RealPlayer so I don't wanna try RV.
- Flyinace2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is why we need threaded comments,
- brulz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For realvideo I use Real Alternative http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Real_Alternative.htm
It works great and uses good old Windows Media Player 6 - sunchild, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ummm, what's the point of having a good encoder if no one trusts you enough to install the player? Hahaha, Real sucks so bad.
- laserob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My girlfriend still uses Real Player. It's downright embarrassing. :S
- ryank808, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.collegeboredom.com/pics/Dork/real-buffering.jpg
- chevyorange, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My prefs: QuickTime>Real>WMP. I have been encoding everything that needs encoding that comes across my desktop in AAC/AVC since they were introduced and hopefully others are doing this as well. Please, kill AVI. Kill Real next.
- bristolz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1WMV is a nice format for playback--very efficient but for any content creation I use Quicktime and, as far as I am concerned, the lack of scrubbing (mentioned above) is a crippling factor for the MS formats and players.
- paulchu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0who the ***** is streamingmedia.com?
- plasticated, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Its just a shame Macromedia made the decision to use the V6 codec instead of H.264 in their Flash 8 player. Its still virtually impossible to find a solution to properly encode V6 on anything but a PC. The bundled video compressor does it, but it doesnt support 2 pass etc. I think when all is said and done H.264 will eventually gain enough market share to become 'standard'. Its certainly the only codec I have seen that properly scales from stuff as small as cellphone clips - all the way up to 1080p HD. Real's Helix project managed to increase market share by making source available, but I doubt it can keep up in the long term. *****... I didnt mean to type that much!

I was wondering when someone was going to post that. - jholdaway, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think WMV and Quicktime has its plus and minuses. Once quicktime player began using open formats and standards as WMV has I don't mind their proprietary files. Both are progressing and heading in a repectible direction (and both can do great High Def and both can look like crap depending on the encoding setup).
Boo for Real, even with a less intrusive program then a few years ago it still is almost bad enough to be a virus! And with such a closed tight format even VLC won't play it. And I do agree with previous posts that real on OSX doesn't pain me as much as on XP. - intelsucks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Real Video:

HAHA I remember those days when I did that exact same thing. Back in those days you be like: OOOOO Look BONZI BUDDY! - tfaz1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The OS X RealPlayer is actually very nice. Clean install. Great video. Definitely not as good as Quicktime, but certainly better than Windows Media on OS X.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I recently d/l'ed the same episode of family guy in both real and wmv formats by mistake.
I almost wiped the .rm version as it was 1/2 the size, but I decided to play it anyway. Its quality was crisper and better than the wmv version. Now this must have been a fluke, the wmv ver still looked fine, but the .rm was virtually DVD quality, I was stunned.
I still refuse to download the stuff deliberatley though. A more efficient way to screw up a computer other than installing Real I cannot think of. - foxhoundadmin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0real does suck, and so does h.264!
i can't play a quicktime movie trailer encoded in h.264 at 720p (~5mbps) at 1/2x fps. i never get more than 13fps. i should be getting 23-24fps. THAT SUCKS ASS!
now, i can play wmv trailers at 1080p (yes, that's p as in progressive) (~10mbps) at full speed; and i have 64mb of integrated graphics, an amd athlon xp 3200+ (barton core), and 512mb ddr333 sdram. so, BEAT THAT APPLE! YOUR FORMAT SUCKS! not to mention, wmv looks better than mp4 or m4v encoded in h.264. the lines and color are better, and so is the contrast. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Windows Media and Quicktime are my first choices--I avoid Real, its only installed via K-Codec :D Thats just my opinion anyway...
Though Apple needs to fix the H264 decoder for Quicktime on Windows--slower than a mofo, vlc buggy as it is ends up playing it better (Fix iTunes video support too, "buggier" if thats a word) - andreizilla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Real has a bad rep because their software is *****. They ***** up by making horible software, and now no matter how good/bad their codecs are, no one will like them.
- flashmaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Quicktime Movie Previews. 1080i High Definition. Nothing Else Matters.
- RichCoder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Apple's H264??? What?
Apple just implements the H264 standard, so does RealPlayer as I understand. Anyone can play the licensing fees and put it in their player. Microsoft included.
That's like saying Firefox's HTML format or Winamp's MP3 format. - s0ny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0god people. how the hell does this have 500+ diggs, and I have yet to see a single comment saying that real player is good which is what the article is SAYING! I hate freaking real and wish they would just die and get it over with. I do use Apple, but regardless ANY mpeg version is better than any real or wmv/wma, except the wmv-hd stuff. Ill take h264 and xvid over jaggie, blockie, non-live scrubbing windows/real proprietary crap any day!
NO DIGG, THE ARTICLE IS CRAP - dignon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0RealVideo?!?
WTF, nobody uses that! As far as Windows Media Player... I don't think I've ever had it play one entire file without a problem. Quicktime all the way! It always works, it looks good. H.264 is amazing (near-DVD quality) on the files I've seen. - iSEPIC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0>Real has a bad rep because their software is *****. They ***** up by making horible software, >and now no matter how good/bad their codecs are, no one will like them.
I don't think it could have been said any better than that, andreizilla 100% truth. - rajivm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is total BS. Most modern/major sites have thrown out real in favor of other streaming technologies. I find it is no longer necessary to even have any Real software or even Real alternative codec installed... only obscure/outdated/smaller sites use Real, or the occasional archive as Real was once extremely popular. In addition this article seems to be very biased and poorly written.
- Jussles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What is everyone talking about? RealVideo rocks! Now, pardon me while I play with my POGs, watch tonight's new Seinfeld episode, and log into AOL.
- cubbieco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Marked as inaccurate. The title and the description are totally misleading and wrong.
Bury this with me please. - tabledesk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's strange how nice RealPlayer is for OS X
