What steps? Hitting the okay button a couple times? That's SO HARD - bigtallmofo, on 11/07/2009, -3/+52I was one of the people that bought a boxed copy of Windows 7. I have a Dell Inspiron 530 that came with Windows XP on it. I upgraded it to Windows Vista Ultimate x64 and everything seemed like it was OK. Then it started randomly crashing simple programs (even notepad!) It would happen every 5 minutes. I updated all the Vista hardware drivers, same problem. I updated the BIOS on my system, same problem. I "downgraded" to Vista Ultimate x86, same problem. I installed 32-bit Windows XP - no problems!
So a few weeks ago my hard drive died and I thought "I'll give Windows 7 one chance". Well, the system that could not run Vista works perfectly with Windows 7. It is such an upgrade over XP, I am not surprised at all that their boxed editions are selling quickly. - Shitokki, on 11/06/2009, -3/+48Buried for being a complete ***** moron. Try reading again.
- jakem1, on 11/07/2009, -0/+35And that explains why two weeks after its commercial release there are more Windows 7 users than Snow Leopard users.
- xathish, on 11/07/2009, -3/+29Expected, it works great in my 5 yr old p4 with 512 MB ram. Guess i don't need an upgrade anytime soon.
- PrincePickle, on 11/07/2009, -1/+23So they are poking fun at the difficulties of upgrading from XP which came out 9 years ago, to Windows 7? Which OS X software was around 9 years ago, Cheetah? Oh wait, Snow Leopard doesn't support PowerPC's. Snap....
- rypic7, on 11/07/2009, -4/+25FTA: Apple fired back with its own marketing blitz, criticizing the difficult process of upgrading a Windows XP machine to Windows 7. This argument really annoys me and it seems pretty misleading. Whether you're upgrading to 7 or buying a Mac with Snow Leopard, you have to back-up all of your data. However with OSX, you have to buy a new $1000+ computer; with 7 you keep the same computer you have. It's not unreasonable that you should have to back up your data upgrading from XP to 7, being as the whole system of file organization has completely changed. - stubear, on 11/07/2009, -0/+19Yeah well, sucks to be Apple I guess

- rypic7, on 11/07/2009, -3/+19Annnnnnnnd you clearly did not read the article.
- XISUPERMANIX, on 11/07/2009, -0/+16Actually when you install Windows 7 or Vista, it gives you the option to keep all your files and store them in a folder named Windows.old on your C drive. Applications won't work but you keep the rest of the files you had. Although I always make a backup just in case.
But seriously if you choose to buy a Mac instead of installing the new os just throw your money down the toilet. Seems pretty pointless to say "instead of installing this and clicking a few OK buttons, buy this, set it up, and transfer ALL of your files to this Mac". - specialK16, on 11/07/2009, -2/+15Apple could wrap turds in a blankets and sell them as iPods and all you idiots would be all over it.
What is your point? - specialK16, on 11/07/2009, -0/+12I find it ***** stupid to use that as a selling point.
If you were moving to a Mac you still would need to "migrate" all your ***** to the new computer. - ahhell, on 11/07/2009, -2/+12Don't you mean the corporate WORLD? America isn't the only ***** country on Earth.
- bobdigi, on 11/07/2009, -1/+11This This This.
Everyone should give this guy a thumbs up. - Clodhopper, on 11/07/2009, -0/+10Saying you have to wipe the drive to install windows 7 over XP is wrong.
You can't UPGRADE from XP to 7, no. However it has no problem installing Windows 7 on an empty part of the XP partition and than moving all files you had while on XP to a folder called C:\Windows.old where you can conveniently access all your files and move them where you please. - happytheclam, on 11/07/2009, -1/+10The article was also about PC hardware sales being down. So it can also go into hardware.
- theoccupation, on 11/07/2009, -2/+10I preordered 7 back in July with that half off special. I did so because I heard nothing but glowing reviews for it. When Vista came out, I heard it was a piece of *****. Which is why I put XP when I made my brand new build last year. Yes, i'd rather go with a 7 year old OS then Vista because I knew it worked.
- 7thspages, on 11/07/2009, -1/+8I think that Windows 7 will succeed Windows XP. Surprisingly good OS.
- norman619, on 11/07/2009, -3/+10Vista ran fine on my system. People don't seem to get that Vista was released before drivers were available. It was also designed to run on highend beefy systems so of course early adopters were going to have issues. It only ran fine on my system because it was a highend system with gobs of resources it coulds consume w/o much of an impact on me when I we working or playing games on it. It also helped that most of my hardware had Vista drivers available. Windows 7 is Vista 2.0. It isn't a new OS. I know it is being marketed as such but it isn't.
- norman619, on 11/07/2009, -1/+8Actually, you get that whenever you go from one OS to a completely different OS. Moving from XP to Windows 7 is not an upgrade. There is no upgrade path for it. Vista to Windows 7 is a painless upgrade as I can attest to. Moving from XP to Apple involves much more than simply loosing your data. It invloves losing access to most of the application you knew and loved when using XP. Most vendors still don't support the Apple OS and 99% of video game vendors still don't. Since games is one of the major uses people have for computers that is a huge deal. If all you do is browse the web and email then you would be better off with Linux since it is free and you don't have to buy a new computer to use it. If you do a lot more with your computer then jumping to OSX is not an option.
- specialK16, on 11/07/2009, -0/+7Same here, worked great on my Old P4 with 1GB RAM. Too bad my old GeForce 6200 couldn't keep up when many applications where opened and I was using Aero.
I speak in past tense because I'm using Ubuntu now, but my new build in December will sure have Windows 7 as primary OS. - theghostofme, on 11/07/2009, -3/+10Why are we reading Windows news from an Apple website? Man, they don't bury the lead at all with this one: "Windows sucks, buy Apple." Kind of a biased point of view, wouldn't you say?
- ariez84, on 11/07/2009, -1/+6For Apple users that IS very hard to do indeed.
- chicagospur, on 11/07/2009, -0/+5"Any user that reads all those steps is probably going to freak out," he said. "If you have to go through all that, why not just buy a Mac?""
Buy a Mac, buy MS Office so that you can continue to use your documents. Not that cheap.
Anyway, XP to Win 7 is two OS apart.
I'm writing this on a Macbook running Tiger. To get to Snow Leopard (also two OS apart), I first need to buy the full version for $169 (although I do get iLife 09, whether I want it or not.) Then I need to do a clean install, no upgrade available. While I can spend $29 for the "upgrade" and still do a complete install, I would be breaking the EULA...
I'm at least lucky that I can upgrade. My buddy with his three year old G5 tower is stuck with Leopard unless he buys a new machine. - ilikedemoon, on 11/07/2009, -1/+5The windows 7 ultimate torrent is only 2.33GB if your into that.
- Frostek, on 11/07/2009, -0/+4Tell them, not us.
- StarlessKnight, on 11/07/2009, -0/+4Vista was bad when it first came out, but it got better. Not great, but better. Windows 7 solved a lot of remaining issues with Vista, namely the UAC that shot itself in the foot with only a "Do you want me to bug the hell out of you" or "Off" option.
- specialK16, on 11/07/2009, -0/+4I don't see the logic in that. People in developing countries are most likely to buy new hardware to get Windows 7 than to just buy the software alone. Mainly because the software alone is very very expensive.
But I'll have to be honest, most people will just pirate it. - kkm3, on 11/07/2009, -0/+4cool story bro!
- sh0x, on 11/07/2009, -3/+6Considering most of the information on the Internet requires reading to consume, why is reading comprehension on the Internet so damn low?
- bigtallmofo, on 11/07/2009, -0/+3Haha - holy *****. That's amazing statistic.
- orangefly, on 11/07/2009, -0/+3of course it did....7 didn't require 4X the commonly owned hardware....
- AlienMushroom, on 11/07/2009, -2/+5Did you even read the description, let alone the article itself? Or perhaps you don't know what "boxed software" means.
- zerodaysoon, on 11/07/2009, -0/+3ppl are still using ME and 98....not surprised though...i got called back for a job opportunity here in L.A and they said that they still use WIN 98..i was like wtf....
- theghostofme, on 11/07/2009, -0/+2@LinuxLiberty:
Your entire post was an argument against Windows in general, saying that their operating systems are only good for big businesses. - BogusJimmy, on 11/07/2009, -0/+2Yes
- jbmcb, on 11/08/2009, -0/+2I was thinking about upgrading to Windows 7, but then I thought, I could do absolutely anything else and it would be more productive. So I went out and raked leaves instead. When I came back my computer still worked exactly the way it worked when I left it - all my apps worked, all my files were still there, all my games still worked, even the debugger in Visual Studio 2003 still worked. Win!
- harpoonhank420, on 11/07/2009, -0/+2i dont know why your being dugg down its actually really good
- roebeet, on 11/07/2009, -0/+2The beauty of Windows 7 is that it really does run well on older hardware. Yes, backing up your data and refreshing your PC may take a bit of work, but it won't be any worse than having to do the same thing AND also buy a new system, as well.
And don't forget about all those applications you use that are Windows only that won't run on a Mac. I guess the Apple spin doctors forgot to mention that part. - musntSurfatWork, on 11/07/2009, -0/+2such as yourself, for when you install Win7 , it asks you where to install, choose a separate partition or drive, and it will create a Boot menu, asking you which OS to load, leaving XP and or lol Vista, intact.
- Bartboy919, on 11/07/2009, -1/+3Why is that so surprising?
- specialK16, on 11/08/2009, -0/+1My guess is it could be the fact that it runs on a ***** AGP 4X bus...
- chetoflep, on 11/08/2009, -0/+1I think there's a 3 pack.
- LinuxLiberty, on 11/07/2009, -2/+3First I said Window 7 is a solid OS then I preceded to list what I thought were nice features, I didn't even bring up Linux other than its in my user name.
Let's just compare Window 7 to previous Windows operating systems and leave Linux out of it for the time being. If you are going from XP to Windows 7 you will get a major improvement in security. If you are going from Vista you will get a major improvement in performance and you have more granular control over the UAC.
Yes, almost all of its features were geared to business environments, not that there is anything wrong with that. As for features that an average home user will use, there is very little. You have a different looking task bar and you can snap windows from one side of the screen to the other so you can view two windows simultaneously. That's about it. Like I said its a solid OS, but people act like Microsoft has just cured cancer or something. - norman619, on 11/07/2009, -0/+1musnt:
Most peopel don't have their hard drives partitioned properly. Especially not those who buy prebuilt systems. PC vendors still put everything on one partition. I always have a partition which is only for the OS. I save all my data to other partitions. This means I don't lose anythign if/when the OS fails and I have to reinstall. I did the same when I was running XP and migrated to Vista. Vista wiped the XP partition then installed, I then reinstalled my applications, and then pointed them to the proper save locations. No pain. There is no valid reason to dual boot Windows 7 unless you are running VERY old applications you can't live without assuming it can't run in the virtual XP W7 offers to Pro users. - JohnnySoftware, on 11/10/2009, -0/+1Apple released a patch for guest-account related bug yesterday, along with a patch for the just leaked SSL MIM attack bug (I thought everyone switched to TLS years ago...?!) that is affecting lots of platforms - it's an industry-wide problem.
The data deletion possibility is there but it hardly hit all Digg users. You had to create a guest account, first. In fact, before you installed the Snow Leopard upgrade, I read somewhere. Then, after you install the upgrade to Snow Leopard you had to switch between the guest & a normal user account. I am not even sure you can log into a Guest Account by default so the reproduce steps for the bug might look interesting.
Not sure why someone would want to create a guest account and log into it. Some Mac users said they tried to duplicate the data loss, over and over, and could not. Apparently, some users who reported it a month ago did and Apple must have since they released a fix.
In any event, it seems evident it did not affect most Mac users on Digg or you might have heard one or two of them mention it. ;-) - LinuxLiberty, on 11/07/2009, -2/+3Where was I making a valid against Windows 7?? Could you please read posts before you comment on them.
- TrashTV, on 11/07/2009, -0/+1I bought a genuine liscence of Windows 7 Ultimate retail on ebay for 30$. Tell me now I am better off with another OS...
