- aplardi, on 10/12/2007, -7/+29Come on guys. Stop digging this worthless junk, and wait a few hours to find out from the horses mouth.
- darkyoshi, on 10/12/2007, -4/+23...Quicktime?
- tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -7/+20Sometimes the top user stories get to the front page before the dupes because the link/title/description doesn't suck.
Yours is a complete non-story. - Sonic84, on 10/12/2007, -13/+26first things first, I'd be satisfied if windows worked properly.
- drakethegreat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Duck and cover, leaving comments is hazardous to your digg score! Too Late...
FYI: It may be bloatware but it auto-organizes my mess of illegal music for easier distribution. - tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I'm actually betting/hoping it'll be a brand new app... something akin to a virtual movie theatre. Kinda Quicktime meets Delicious Library.
I don't think they'll use iTunes for the movie store. It works OK for TV shows you could say, but iTunes really is focused around music, in name and function. If a full-blown movie store is coming (I think it's almost certain now, isn't it?), I think it'll have a new associated application too. Might even be called Showtime? Seems a good name for it.
That's my hope, anyway. - gmailgeoff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Spell gooder.
- neutrascrub, on 10/12/2007, -9/+18hope it supports xp x64 edition
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -12/+18If we do see a new version of iTunes, I do hope it fixes a couple of annoyances I have:
1. Please take the podcasts outside of the overall library. I love using iTunes to download and listen to my podcasts, but I don't want them all mixed up in my music library. Same goes with video.
2. Speaking of podcasts and videocasts, please integrate a simple BitTorrent client. I realize that many 'casters use BitTorrent to save on bandwidth, and Apple needs to accommodate the podcasting community. A healthy community makes the podcasts feature that much better.
3. Man, I hate to belabor the podcasts point, but please allow us to organize the podcast section into folders. I'd like to keep my tech podcasts and my news podcasts and my cooking podcasts and my language podcasts together, as well as organize my videocasts together under one roof.
4. Seriously consider FLAC and LAME support. The default iTunes MP3 encoder is not as good or as popular (opinions may vary) than LAME (which isn't an encoder, but you catch my drift), and it's a pain for many people using iTunes on Windows (Mac users can stick LAME in there). Also, FLAC has become very popular, and it should be supported just as MP3 is. Let the users decide between AAC and MP3 or ALAC and FLAC.
5. Please improve performance on the Windows client. Most Mac people love how smoothly iTunes runs, yet a lot of Windows users find it a bit slow and clunky. That's a real shame, since it really is a great application. iTunes for Windows should be optimized to the point where it matches up well with the Mac version, especially with large libraries.
6. Don't force users to download Quicktime with iTunes. If there's a necessary set of tools that you can't code into iTunes, give them a little notification screen and allow the users to decide to download Quicktime.
7. Speaking of Quicktime, there are a whole host of issues that need to be fixed and tweaked. If movies are going to become a big component of the iTunes experience, please round out the rough edges of Quicktime for both Mac and Windows users. Oh, and get rid of Quicktime Pro. All those features should be part of the overall, free Quicktime application. - mww2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7iTunes is moderate bloatware that doesn't act like bloatware, so I'm still happy to use it.
- sdo1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@Clearz
Yea, God forbid anyone write anything well thought out and meaningful here. Or is the attention span of a Digg reader really that short? - Sentinel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Am I the only one who doesn't want any videos or movies in iTunes? They need an all new app for this, and leave iTunes for music.
- billyoneal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4We already have Apple Losless Audio Format, what more do you need in the audio department?
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4maybe the OP was talking about music bought from the iTMS, which is not lossless.
flac could be added (but it won't be). an open format would be great, because open formats are even more important than open source code if you value your data (and you can code ;-)
if they release a video-playing nano i'll be stoked to pick up an "old" nano on ebay on the cheap. i rarely watch videos on my ipod itself, though i hook it up to the tv all the time. if nanos played video that would be the biggest joke ever. - bmobile, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@ BlackAle: it's not necessarily that it's an anti-Apple comment, it's the fact that you blurted out what i can only assume is your opinion without a SHRED of evidence to back up your claim.
i, on the other hand, happen to enjoy iTunes for its simplistic interface and easy support of CD art. it also helps that i own an iPod too but i actually started using iTunes well before that. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I'm thinking that Apple *could* be releasing iTunes 7.0 tomorrow as a response to someone FINALLY cracking iTunes 6.
http://hymn-project.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1555 - obey43, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3my prediction:
tv shows/videos get taken out of itunes
and put them showtime app alongside movies - hansdg1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3more like 5 days...
- MisterCookie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Please, for all that is holy, let there be a linux version. I wanna be able to play my 300+ songs under linux without resorting to burning them to a disc.
- joel8x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think the hope is for Apple to do it in a way that works and is innovative. If they just say, "OK now we sell movies for X amount of dollars", nobody would care, much like Unbox. If they introduce a killer new video iPod, or better yet, a wireless Airport Express type of device that streams movies to your TV over 802.11n effortlessly, then they will have another hit on their hands. Unfortunately I don't think we will see anything more than upgraded iPods with larger capacities and the same old form factor.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Blogspam = Digg story linking to a blog which links to the real entry. An original blog entry that's not linking to the actual story elsewhere is NOT blogspam.
- patrickloggins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It'll probably be supported once OS X Lepoard is released, as it has 64-bit support. I bet they'll move some apps to x64, or at least get the Windows version working.
- thebrokenlight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think he meant lossless iTunes Music Store downloads. There was evidence supporting lossless iTMS downloads a month or so ago. That would honestly be enough to get me buying on iTunes again.
- nreynolds, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7EXACTLY. 10.3 and 10.4 both work fine on x64 but anything higher won't. It's stupid, I had 10.5 working for a while, but I had to re-install windows once and maybe they did a little sneaky change to 10.5 to make it not work on x64 (between when I downloaded it the first time and when I reinstalled windows).
It's stupid. I guarantee that the only reason it doesn't work is because they put something in the code like:
if (operatingSystem == x64)
screwThem();
otherwise it would work fine. Is there anyway to get programs to recognize your version of windows as a different version? - Pharaoh777, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yes, I want to be able to choose whether my downloads are in lossless or not. The sound quality is what keeps me buying CDs instead of using iTMS.
- macattacks10, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4If anything, I hope they keep movies and music separate, and just allow them to communicate, just like all their other apps. It keeps things simplier and faster overall, and makes things feel less bloated.
- galador, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I refuse to comment on this comment and perpetuate any more rumors that you are a dumb ass.
Oh wait.... - tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I don't think it will merge with Quicktime, because Quicktime has uses far beyond simply playing video clips. But it'll obviously use Quicktime as a base, as all video in OSX does.
- Pharaoh777, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Of course we will. The question is whether we'll get Video iPods, higher capacity Video Nanos, and the ability to send video to the television quickly and easily.
I wouldn't mind lossless audio for music files and HD movie downloads either... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3How much do you want to bet that if release iTunes 7 will include a patch for the QTFairUse6 DRM crack that was released a few weeks ago?
- diggMacs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If Apple named a video program "Showtime" It think they'd be inviting a lawsuit from a certain television channel...
- hyperpasta, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Your dream exists! iTunes is DRM-free save the Music Store, and all legal music stores have that. In addition, manually drag-and-dropping music to an iPod is a checkbox away, assuming you're into that kind of thing.
- meamog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"Showtime" does seem like the perfect name for an Apple product/program. Fits right in with Garageband, Front Row, etc.
- pabster, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7@billyoneal
How about support for FLAC? - yonis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think that selling TV shows in a program called iTunes is a little strange too. They really should consider splitting up the program or, at the very least, a name change.
- kfconme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wow, just upgraded... it looks like it's made for windows. plus it won't play my music. when I click play it just pauses the current track.
but worst of all... it uses 3x as much physical mem.
downgrade it is. - alej744, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Isn't it called "shotime"?
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Maybe... but look at slashdot's comments. most of them have no points (effectively buried). the comments on digg should reflect something similar: > 0 diggs = maybe worthwhile, < 0 diggs = waste of time. too bad that's not always the case.
- Tanbo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dude....the Nanos are already color screen....and there is no way they are gonna play videos on a screen that is so tiny that you can barely even see photos. (if the screen were made any larger however, it wouldn't be a "Nano").
Now, of course, if Jobs were to, a la the SNL skit, rename the current Nano to the "Pequeno", then the Nano could may have a larger screen, and play videos. - dcipjr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I completely agree. Videos and movies should handled by a separate app. iTunes is becoming increasingly bloated, but has seen very few music-related new features recently. I miss the days of iTunes 4, when it was all about the music.
- inkhead, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2not to mention Apple release iTunes 5, then released iTunes 6 less than 3 MONTHS LATER!!!!
- nmaster64, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Remember what the big feature of iTunes 6 was?"
Not being able to crack the DRM for a while? I'm not upgrading... - joel8x, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Or maybe Quicktime will be renamed to "Showtime", and the movies will play though it while still being purchased through the iTunes interface.
- xioner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1my hope is that they come out with a separate application for video, or drastically improve the video support in iTunes. First of all, iTunes is really bad at playing videos (and I'm running it on a G5 and a CoreDuo, not some weak system). And second, it just feels wrong to watch movies in a music app... especially since they clog up my library.
iVideo? meh...
I'd settle for improved support and keeping the videos in a different library folder. - QACJared, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@joel
yea i know thats y my dress upsteve jobs got around 800 diggs - alej744, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yeah, when I get a vidcast in iTunes, I rightclick and show in finder, then open it in QuickTime.
iTunes is great for music, sucks for video... I HATE IT! I HATE IT! I HATE IT! - joecritch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think that iTunes 7, if released tomorrow, will include a similar visual interface as WMP11, but done in the right way, with an immediate source to album art.
Also, "Showtime", as people seem to be calling it, will have the darkness of Adobe's Lightroom, so it really focuses on the content rather than the program driving it. - Slooper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm sorry, iTunes 7 already? I just updated to iTunes 6.5.1 or whatever yesterday (well, Sunday actually)!
Actually, wait, I believe the moral of the story here is that I should update when they first tell me that a new version is avaiable instead of waiting . . . great, I get to update my iTunes soon. -
