Will iTunes rentals play on a 5G iPod? Nope.
tuaw.com — The long-rumored iTunes rental service is finally up and running. For many users, the most attractive part of the service (and certainly the only part that really sets it apart from any of the other online rental options) is the ability to transfer your rental to an iPod, iPhone/iTouch, or third-generation Nano for playback on the go.

- bigfinger, on 01/17/2008, -18/+180This sucks, I know my ipod is one and a half years old but If It can play back H.264 and MPEG4 video it should be able to play Videos I rent using iTunes. I'm kinda pissed. I paid $500 for this and it cant play videos I get from Apple? Pirate Bay here I come.
- mingfishy, on 01/17/2008, -7/+24DUGG - Maybe I'm just really really cheap but I can not believe that a lot more folks are not ticked that a device that they bought just few months ago won't play the rentals - but will play the exact same movie if they (can) buy it.
- otatop, on 01/17/2008, -4/+144You paid $500 for an iPod a year and a half ago? Man, you got ripped off.
- Dubbsacc, on 01/17/2008, -10/+2Sounds like you need the latest and greatest.
- Spuy767, on 01/17/2008, -6/+26It does suck, but watching movies on a 2 inch screen is ***** anyway. If I'm going to pay 5 bucks for a movies, you can bet your sweet ass I'm not going to burn that 5$ watching the ***** on the tiniest screen possible.
- BlaenkDenum, on 01/17/2008, -1/+8Actually it's not that bad, watching it on that small a screen. You're closer to the screen anyways, so if you think about it, it's sometimes the same as watching TV from a good distance. Of course, it's not the same, but it's not THAT bad either.
- Netrilix, on 01/17/2008, -0/+4Sure, I like watching a movie or TV show on my iPod once in a while, but what I usually end up doing is putting movies on it, and then using AV cables to connect it to a TV wherever I happen to be. I'd love to be able to rent a movie for $5 and then bring it with me.
- daza, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1That's probably why they won't let you play it on the 5G iPod, if you run cables into your TV then you could easily record the signal coming out of it. Perhaps the 5G iPod doesn't have DRM mechanisms to stop someone recording whatever it outputs.
- TechCF, on 01/17/2008, -4/+15Well, if this is as ***** as charging for the iPod Touch software upgrade
- cleverboy, on 01/17/2008, -7/+1You ever think the old hardware just ain't made to run the new stuff? Should Apple spend time fixing bugs and adding features to iPhone/Touch or should they go back to 5G iPods and completely REDO the firmware to work with their new system? Meh. You're high.
- OrangeSoda31, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1Other people do it. Apple seems to adopt the approach where they make it, and move on, expecting you to buy the newer model for the new features.
- Trax91, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1Damn, you make religious zealots look like an average joe.
- se1zure, on 01/18/2008, -0/+2it's not really a software upgrade. it's a set of apps. like how you have to pay for microsoft word, or photoshop.
and why is it an issue that they offer an optional feature to expand the usability of the device you already purchased knowing these features were not included.- daza, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1I guess stock and weather updates are as sophisticated as Microsoft Word or Adobe Photoshop. And it's not like there was any development or porting required for the iPod touch considering they are identical to the iPhone. $20 USD for a set of measly programs? That's like charging for Notepad or MS Paint. No thanks.
- dragon76, on 01/19/2008, -1/+1Except that you aren't actually paying for the apps, you're paying to unlock the use of the apps. Whether you want them or not Apple makes you have them on your Touch if you update to 1.1.3. The $20 just lets you use them. It's *****. Apparently 8GB of flash memory costs $20 more than a cell radio, bluetooth, speaker, microphone and a camera.

> H.264 and MPEG4 video it should be able to play Videos I rent using iTunes
But it doesn't know about the 24 time limit. Apple would have to send out a firmware update for old iPods to support it, and I doubt it's a priority for them.- adooga, on 01/17/2008, -3/+9I believe this is the point.
It's not a priority to look after their loyal customers. What a bunch of *****.- Loonacy, on 01/17/2008, -2/+7If you don't buy a new iPod just for rentals, you're not a loyal customer.
- astrosmash, on 01/17/2008, -5/+5Calm down, kid. I'm sorry your feelings are hurt. Macworld week must be very difficult for you.
- adooga, on 01/17/2008, -3/+9I believe this is the point.
- UNEXPLODEDduck, on 01/17/2008, -6/+23Don't worry, they offer it for a $20 upgrade later
- se1zure, on 01/18/2008, -0/+2except it has already been announced by Steve Jobs that the update will be available later for free.
- UNEXPLODEDduck, on 01/17/2008, -15/+4Don't worry, it'll be a $20 upgrade later
- Urkel, on 01/17/2008, -1/+4Is anyone really paying $3-4 to rent a movie and watch it on a 2.5" screen?
I've got a 13" Macbook and a 24" monitor but if I'm going to rent a movie Ive never seen before then I'm watching it on the 37" HDTV. - joshuaer, on 01/17/2008, -7/+2Why are you just now pissed off about this and more so why is this news Jobs him self said that it would only work on current model ipods.
chances are if you where so quick it state that you will just pirate the movies now you would have done so any way. - jonro, on 01/17/2008, -3/+3You can buy it, just not from iTunes. Buy the DVD, rip it with Handbrake and watch it on your iPod. BTW, just because you can't view it on your iPod now, does not mean there won't be a software update to add that functionality later.
- OrangeSoda31, on 01/18/2008, -2/+2for a price...
- se1zure, on 01/18/2008, -1/+1the only firmware update they have charged for on any of their portable devices is the ONE package for the ipod touch, which are features you knew weren't included when you purchased it.
- OrangeSoda31, on 01/18/2008, -2/+2for a price...
- Ataxia2008, on 01/17/2008, -5/+1OMG I'm reeeeelly pissed at not being able to play extortionately priced videos on my iPod
/Sarcasm!!!!- zongamin, on 01/18/2008, -0/+4$4 is extortionate now is it? You are an absolute cretin.
- se1zure, on 01/17/2008, -6/+4oh boo hoo, my ipod doesn't have a feature I knew nothing about when I bought it a year ago. I'm pissed because they should release a firmware upgrade to an outdated product, despite the fact that this was never a feature that was included with the ipod when I bough it.
- Coffeedemon, on 01/17/2008, -1/+4Maybe they're pissed on principle ... based on the fact that this looks like a nice way for Apple to sell new players to people who have perfectly good ones already. Forced semi-obsolescence to raise the profit margin.... I'd be pissed too and I don't want one at all.
- se1zure, on 01/18/2008, -1/+3if the players are perfectley good already, then they don't need a new one. if you are such a consumer whore that you buy a new ipod over movie rentals then your making your own choice to hand over your money.
So do you think apple should never release new features in their ipods? The market would never move foreward. It's a waste of time and money for them to add this functionality, because my guess is, if it increased rental sales, it would be only marginally, and the extra amount that they would make would not counter the costs.

- ectocooler, on 01/18/2008, -1/+1$500? Try half of that. Where do you buy your products, the exaggeration store?
- pureevilmatt, on 01/18/2008, -0/+2Or in Canada. 80GB iPod video used to be $450 plus 15% sales tax.
- zongamin, on 01/18/2008, -2/+1In which case Rentals are not available anyway so shut up.
- pureevilmatt, on 01/18/2008, -0/+2Or in Canada. 80GB iPod video used to be $450 plus 15% sales tax.
- zongamin, on 01/18/2008, -2/+1Buried for being a ***** liar.
- ericsouth, on 01/19/2008, -0/+0There is an online petition circulating to ask Apple to rectify this issue with a firmware update for older models at: www.PetitionOnline.com/ipodrent/petition.html.
If technological barriers and (speculative) DRM issues are truly not impediments to older video iPods utilizing the iTunes movie rental service - and, indeed, inspection of the purchased and rental videos show that files & codecs are exactly the same—then Apple has no reason to exclude their many current customers for using the service as it was intended

- ilikesboobs, on 01/17/2008, -5/+17Hey, wait a minute. You're not stealing it, you're borrowing it, right? And the only way to borrow it is to give it back, right? And the only way to give it back is to seed that mother *****. So I don't think you're stealing at all!
- se1zure, on 01/17/2008, -6/+2what a lame excuse for piracy. at least admit you would have stolen it either way...
oh no, my tv doesn't have *insert feature on new tv*, this justifies me stealing one. - OrangeSoda31, on 01/18/2008, -2/+0Define steal. Stealing is criminal, piracy is not criminal (unless you reach the threshold where you become a felon), it is a civil offense. You must mean you intend to go and steal a physical copy of the movie.

"Rentals to go.
Movie rentals from iTunes transfer to your iPod or iPhone to watch on the go. Either device remembers where you stopped watching on your computer and picks up where you left off."
It doesn't say iPod Touch. It says iPod. I wouldn't call it proof, exactly, but it is a pretty good indication.- brainbox, on 01/18/2008, -0/+3The "iPod Classic" (the one with the slow, laggy Coverflow) is what they meant when they said just "iPod".
In addition to their not supporting the install-base, they're not launching this in the UK yet. Fine by me, I'll either torrent stuff or return to renting DVDs by post (netflix-style, but not Actual Netflix as they're not in the UK either).

- TechCF, on 01/17/2008, -3/+9and will it cost money like the touch upgrade?
- adooga, on 01/17/2008, -3/+7It's apple, it will cost money.
- johnpaul191, on 01/17/2008, -5/+3no it won't, because the update is allowing you to rent movies (and pay monies)... the same way the AppleTV is a free upgrade.
- gamabunta, on 01/17/2008, -0/+2If true, they shouldn't have released it until the update was available. It just alienates customers and makes one think things were rushed for Macworld.

I'd love to give these services money, but they won't let me. I'm temped by Piratebay instead... is it really stealing if it wasn't for sale in the first place? - OrangeSoda31, on 01/18/2008, -1/+1Wait, I am confused... People live outside of the united states?

- KanosWRX, on 01/17/2008, -9/+3Apple is just asking people to pirate movies. If I was the MPAA I would sue apple for this.
- Spuy767, on 01/17/2008, -4/+4Keep in mind that it is likely some demand of the MPAA that is causing this incompatibility, perhaps a hardware chip that is present on the new, but not the old iPods?
- Spuy767, on 01/17/2008, -2/+3Why are you digging me down, the MPAA already forced apple to disabe media playback through video output cables and docks that didn't contain an anti-piracy chip.

- SupTricolor, on 01/29/2008, -4/+25I'm an apple user, but apple needs to pay attention to this trend of making equipment
that is less than 1year old obsolete.- bingobongony, on 01/17/2008, -2/+17Yeah...that strategy has really KILLED the iPod so far. They are not stupid. They know how gullbile and desperate for social acceptance their fanbase is. Planned obsolescence is their main profit strategy.
- digggggggggg, on 01/17/2008, -1/+4How does this make it "obsolete"?
Stop being so melodramatic. - johnpaul191, on 01/17/2008, -0/+2it's not obsolete. it still does EVERYTHING it did last week, or the day you bought it. they did not remove functions.
- cawpin, on 01/17/2008, -1/+2No, they just instituted an artificial limit for no technical reason. This is just like limiting the video output of my G4 iMac when I plug in an external monitor. The video card is capable of outputting 1440x900 but Jobsmeister won't allow it.
- se1zure, on 01/17/2008, -1/+1there is a technical reason. they would have to program new firmware, which takes time and money. and unless you have said time and money to hand them, they aren't responsible to add new features to outdated products.

- davidrools, on 01/17/2008, -0/+3maybe apple users need to pay attention to the fact that apple has been doing this as long as they've been in business. they know that people will, for whatever reason keep shelling out more money every year just to keep up. until apple users say "enough is enough" and stop buying apple products, apple won't change a thing...it's too profitable as it is!
- fifthecho, on 01/17/2008, -0/+2Hooray for vendor lock-in and a "throw-away" upgrade plan!
- addiktion, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1google planned obsolscence diggggggggg.
Its a marketing technique used by businesses to deploy a product that is prematurely built with lacking features, so that they may later release a product that has better/more features that are up to par with the current standards. A lot of businesses do it so they can continue sales throughout the years. It's a lot cheaper then funding your research department for better advancements. Ultimately computer companies will continue to advance their products to keep up with competition because they have too to stay in business, however no one else makes an "ipod" so its easy for them to decide what goes in or stays out of their products for the time being.
That being said I still like Apple products. I actually have an Ipod Touch sitting next to me but I still think they are overpriced or over-hyped. I love my ipod touch and the touch experience has been great but it's still pricey none the less.
- hungarianhc, on 01/17/2008, -3/+11I mean is this really a surprise? everyone knows that with Apple, if you want the newest features, you have to pay for the newest toys. I'm not standing up for this policy, but it's pretty obvious at this point.
- johnpaul191, on 01/17/2008, -3/+4i know! i have a 1971 VW and it doesn't have airbags. i can't believe VW doesn't come out to my house and add all the technological advancements of the last 37 years! what a bunch of jerkbags!

- MikeGrenade, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1That was a horrible analogy, get a clue.
Apple could release a firmware update. It wouldn't be that hard. Especially for the biggest ***** DAP out there.

- Protoss, on 01/17/2008, -0/+3Most likely, as the newer iPods contain a chip that locks video-out to specified devices only.
- louiedog, on 01/17/2008, -1/+3Movie industry? This is Apple. Do you really think Warner Bros gives a ***** if you watch Harry Potter on your 5g ipod instead of your ipod classic?
- TheFinaleofSeem, on 01/17/2008, -1/+20I have a 5G iPod and don't give a damn, but that's just me. I'll keep my Netflix subscription. Still, this is a lame development. Makes me wonder if Apple did this by themselves or if the studio suits demanded it.
- stellarceltic, on 01/17/2008, -5/+3Why would the studio suits give a *****? If anything, they would want their movies to be played on any device possible. More devices that it can play on = more potential customers.
- Spuy767, on 01/17/2008, -0/+4They're still ***** scared of anyhting resembling a new paradigm. The 5G iPods do not have the same copy-protection chip that the Current Gen iPods have and therefore the MPAA has forced apple to limit payback to the new models.

- Matrixsjd, on 01/17/2008, -4/+8people don't seem to understand, that the new iPods output progressive video, and have that lock out that requires apple approved cables to hook up to the tv, which guess what? Were more then likely required by the studios to rent movies. So either your iPod works with your old video accessories that don't have the Apple Chips, or it'll be able to play rented movies. But you can't have both.
- neiltc13, on 01/17/2008, -6/+1What the hell do the movie studios have to gain from people using Apple cables?
- Matrixsjd, on 01/17/2008, -0/+2It has to do with the fact that the movie studios know that the Apple cables can not be used to make as they see it, illegal copies of the rented movies. Why is that so hard to understand? I'm not saying I agree with it, that's just the truth of the matter.
- neiltc13, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1The Apple cables are just bog standard Composite/Component etc. I don't understand this.
- uncouthyouth, on 01/30/2008, -0/+0Neil's right, if you start playing video off an iPod Classic using the new cables and then unplug the cable and plug in an old composite cable, the video keeps right on playing. There's no technically valid reason for this, as the new cables and old cables do the same thing.
- neiltc13, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1The Apple cables are just bog standard Composite/Component etc. I don't understand this.

- cawpin, on 01/17/2008, -1/+1Thanks for clarifying his stupidity. There is no technical reason, or business reason, for this.
- neiltc13, on 01/17/2008, -6/+1What the hell do the movie studios have to gain from people using Apple cables?
- wookme, on 01/17/2008, -8/+1Yep, Apple users are really superior to everybody else.
- mannymix03, on 01/17/2008, -0/+4I was pretty sure they said with a software update the iPod would be able to play back rentals, The update is probably going to add stuff to track the amount of time on the movie, blah blah blah DRM stuff
- cbreaker, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1Or, you could just download the stuff via Bittorrent. Hey, I don't love it either, but it's better than dealing with this DRM nonsense.
- Fourbin, on 01/17/2008, -4/+14So buy a new iPod. Aren't you an Apple fanboy? These are the sacrifices we must make.
- customer, on 01/17/2008, -8/+39They'll play after the firmware is updated. Buried.
- dibby1, on 01/17/2008, -14/+7Get ready for a 20$ firmware upgrade to play movie rentals LOL
- Altotus, on 01/17/2008, -2/+2It's free. Plug in your iPod, open iTunes, go to the overview tab and click the search for iPod updates button and you're off to the races.
- gypsi, on 01/17/2008, -0/+9they stated this when they unveiled rentals
- davepascoe, on 01/17/2008, -0/+10Jobs said this at the keynote.
- Virgule, on 01/17/2008, -1/+13"(...) on any CURRENT generation iPod." 5G isn't current.
- XxtraLarGe, on 01/17/2008, -0/+5Why would anybody buy Chuck & Buck???
- cbreaker, on 01/17/2008, -10/+19But, Apple stuff is so easy! It just WORKS!*
* Only if you have a 5G, not a 3G, except the Nano 4G, but not the Apple TV, and only with HDMI, except for SD, which will work on 3G, 4G, and 6G, and some 5G except Video.- se1zure, on 01/17/2008, -2/+2god this argument is so annoying.
The ipod does EVERY SINGLE THING it did (if not more) than when he bought it. He was never promised this functionality, nor should he expect it.
I would hardly call apple not adding an additional feature to a dated product not working... although I can't say the same for your brain.
- se1zure, on 01/17/2008, -2/+2god this argument is so annoying.
- aaroh, on 01/17/2008, -3/+5watching a movie on a tiny screen, not worth the effort
- postalblowfish7, on 01/17/2008, -0/+8duh. what did you think they meant when apple said "current generation ipods" and showed just the touch, nano, and classic on the big screen?
- drmobutu, on 01/17/2008, -6/+1Has anybody, ever, watched a full-length film on a 5th-Gen ipod? Nope...
- BillyK, on 01/17/2008, -0/+7I do all the time. So to answer your question - yes.
- matth1jd, on 01/17/2008, -0/+3Why do you think I bought and iPod v-i-d-e-o. The first thing I did was convert a movie and upload it to my iPod.
- Netrilix, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1I've watched a few TV shows on the tiny screen, but for full length movies I tend to hook the iPod up to a TV wherever I am. So that would be a yes.
- AvidPreatorian, on 01/17/2008, -2/+4wow people like to bitch, the service has barely launched. a firmware update in a few days will fix everything. u need that movie so bad? get off the couch a bit more
- DoTheFandango, on 01/17/2008, -0/+4you can still buy the movies, you just can't rent them.
- ibeetle, on 01/17/2008, -1/+1You can still rent them. You just can't play them back on a iPod that has not been in production for over a year.
- ibeetle, on 01/17/2008, -1/+1You can still rent them. You just can't play them back on a iPod that has not been in production for over a year.
- gak001, on 01/17/2008, -1/+2Nice title. I don't need to bother reading the article. Thanks for the time saver!
- Fireblend, on 01/17/2008, -1/+1I'm definitely not a big fan of watching movies on my iPod, but for those that do not giving them the possibility to watch rentals on it is a great disservice, IMO. Specially when the only excuse they have is the fact that we're not keeping up with every new model they release.
- digggggggggg, on 01/17/2008, -5/+10My goodness do you people love to whine. Let's just look at some of the front page articles that have appeared in the past 2 days.
- Macbook Air thinning my expectations
- MacBook AIR: Apple Fails to Understand Needs of Laptop Users
- MacBook Air doesn't have a user-replaceable battery
- WTF? MacBook Air SuperDrive can only be used w/ MacBook Air
- Survey Finds Apple Users Have Sense of Superiority
and now
- Will iTunes rentals play on a 5G iPod? Nope.
How do these things affect us? How many of you who are having a field day bashing Apple even own, or plan to own, any of these new products? Can we stop with the insanity and irrelevance of this stuff now??- Fireblend, on 01/17/2008, -3/+2How is the Macbook Air hate related to iPod and movie rental issues? And what's wrong about users complaining about products? That's what will make them better in future iterations.
- davepascoe, on 01/17/2008, -3/+5the vast majority is not users though. it's Apple haters who like to crash threads, make assumptions, and then bitch about what they think they know about products they've never used.
- buenit, on 01/17/2008, -1/+2And Apple fanboys don't do the same exact thing for anything Microsoft?
- EllimistX, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1You mean the future iterations that will include new features prompting complains due to their unavailability on current products?
- davepascoe, on 01/17/2008, -3/+5the vast majority is not users though. it's Apple haters who like to crash threads, make assumptions, and then bitch about what they think they know about products they've never used.

- petard, on 01/17/2008, -2/+14WTF is with people calling it the iTouch? It is not called the iTouch, it is the iPod Touch. I dont even like Apple products and that is annoying.
- adooga, on 01/17/2008, -1/+5Yes iHate that too
- timusca, on 01/17/2008, -1/+2Almost as bad as iTV.
- Jeffler, on 01/17/2008, -0/+2The AppleTV was the iTV at first so that isn't as bad.
- HonestAbe, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1When I think of you, iTouch myself.
- Macskeeball, on 01/17/2008, -0/+2I agree, but technically it's "iPod touch," not "iPod Touch."
- kermithefrogand, on 01/17/2008, -2/+1ha...ha
- postalblowfish7, on 01/17/2008, -8/+7"HURRY!!! WE CAN SPIN THIS TO MAKE APPLE LOOK BAD!!! GET IT TO THE FRONT PAGE!!!!!!! I'M OBSESSED WITH HATING MAC USERS!!!!!"
-digg- IsmailOo, on 01/17/2008, -3/+1are you one of those gays the news talks about? yes, yes you are.
- gemmakicn, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1I suspect that the new implementation of fairplay with time limits built in was not built into the most recent iPod updates. Presumably the newest iPods had it implemented because the technology was ready, but was awaiting approval by the studios.
Apple aren't likely to shoot their rental business in the foot by not releasing the update for the millions of video ipods out there. - antgly, on 01/17/2008, -1/+1stupid apple -
I can't believe i want apple to enable me a feature that will let me pay them money!
Its confusing. I actually wish to pay them. - HonestAbe, on 01/17/2008, -2/+1OMG I LOVE APPLE
- antgly, on 01/17/2008, -3/+0Everybody - submit your inquiry to Apple. If they really get flooded with requests, they will probably go through with an update.
http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html - se1zure, on 01/17/2008, -3/+3i don't understand why people bitch about things like this or the $20 upgrade.
You originally bought the product knowing it would not have that functionality, so why is apple responsible for giving it to you for free?
Does every other mp3 player you have previously owned support itunes rentals? no?! what were those manufactures thinking!!?!?! - TeraRealm256, on 01/17/2008, -1/+1yeh..this is corporate manipulation! f$%$ apple! They can shove their air up their arse!
- Petraios, on 01/17/2008, -0/+3It is not great watching a movie on the small screen iPod.
It is however useful to download the movie to your computer, transfer it to the iPod, connect the iPod to the TV with the AV cables and watch it on the big screen. Or bring it to a friend's house and watch it there on their TV. That is how I would intend to use the rental service with the iPod since i don't have Apple TV and don't want to sit in an office chair to watch a movie on my computer or drag the computer to the TV.- NewOntario, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1That was the big reason why I got a 5G iPod: To connect to my TV with a AV kit that came with a Apple remote, yet soooo many people have no freaking clue that the 5G iPod (or any of the current iPods or iPhone) can be used as a tiny little video player.
- b0rg, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1I can see the reasoning behind it, and if I wasn't more inclined to be just socking money away now, I'd love that new ipod touch.
Still, I'm disappointed. DRM is just making it too complicated to watch anything, without reading some multi-page list of caveats and trying to figure out what little 'gotcha' they're dancing around. - thurows, on 01/17/2008, -0/+2Apple tax, new features require the latest and greatest, and you have to pay for it.
- kiwimonk, on 01/17/2008, -0/+2As long as I can download rentals to my shuffle.. I don't care!
- IsmailOo, on 01/17/2008, -2/+1iPod classic? LOL, those things are like bricks...
- AvengeX, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1No.
- zongamin, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1You obviously have never seen one you ***** idiot.
- deadbaby, on 01/17/2008, -1/+3Will pirated movies play on a 5G iPod? Yep. Enjoy. They don't want your money apparently.
