- Higgles, on 09/26/2008, -7/+46G1 won't kill the iPhone, Android will.
- Mueritz, on 09/25/2008, -7/+40It´s just a phone, not a revolution.
- skidooer, on 09/26/2008, -3/+25I hope so. Apple's governance of the App Store is much too heavy-handed and needs some serious competition in hopes of them lightening the restrictions they have imposed.
- BrendanSheehan, on 09/25/2008, -13/+32No multi-touch, no 3.5 mm headphone jack, choppy OS (at least on this device). Where do I sign up!?
- jbeardsl, on 09/26/2008, -0/+15I think this overlooks the bigger challenge for iPhone dominance - AT&T exclusivity. If the G1 becomes available on Verizon Wireless, Sprint, et. al., AND has developer support, it will easily overtake the iPhone in popularity.
- inactive, on 09/26/2008, -1/+15Here's the best way to get your answer.
Walk into a large gathering place for people, go up to the first person you see, then ask if they know what Android is. (no)
I know the words "open source" can trigger a huge e-boner for everyone that visits Digg but the rest of society couldn't give one flying *****. Apple's app store will draw FAR more good developers and good applications for the same reason that Windows attracts far more application development over OSX or Linux. An exponentially larger potential for profit. - Gohan5052, on 09/26/2008, -1/+11who the ***** cares, she put out
- Laminarcissus, on 09/26/2008, -1/+11Yeah, I mean having to store mp3's on a silly SD card, how archaic.
The modern, cool way is for the factory to decide how much storage you'll need, tell you, and then build it in. That way you won't have to worry yourself with all those pesky decisions, like how much storage you want to put in for your specific needs, which applications you want, etc. - IronChef69, on 09/26/2008, -7/+15Try telling that to the Apple crazies about their Jesus phone. It's just an over-hyped phone too.
- NaziHatinChimp, on 09/26/2008, -1/+9I doubt it. There is a ton of crap on the App Store and it is hard to sift through it even with the star system. Without any filter I would hate to see all the buggy stupid ***** the Android store has.
- InorganicMatter, on 09/26/2008, -1/+9Brick without headphone jack and no internal memory
versus
Thin and light device with a headphone jack and 16GB-soon-to-be-32GB of internal memory
I know what I want... - lsumed, on 09/26/2008, -4/+12Google Android is the New Zune.
- friday04, on 09/26/2008, -0/+7I know that from a form factor and the way the user interfaces with Android *on this particular device* it's easy to compare Android and the iPhone. But in reality, Android is in competition with Microsoft Windows Mobile and Symbian. It's an OS that can be developed for any device. So depending on the device maker, the telecom that gets the device, and the tweaks made to the OS the Android experience will be different. Just like a WinMo or Symbian phone.
Apple controls both the hardware and the software. The user experience will almost always be better when you can remove variables that you couldn't test. Instead of comparing Android to the iPhone, people should be comparing Blackberry devices to the iPhone. They are more like Apple in that regard. - mactarkus, on 09/26/2008, -0/+6Android? Is that a robot or cyborg or something? Hand me my iPhone.
- WiseWeasel, on 09/26/2008, -0/+5[citation needed]
You know that 'Multitouch' is allowing *multiple* touch inputs simultaneously, along with gestures, right? Apple's claiming to have that functionality locked up in patents... - tnoy, on 09/26/2008, -1/+6Coming from someone who's been hacking at the SDK to get Android running on his Tilt, is likely to get a G1 as soon as people figure out how to get it to run on othe rnetworks, and has started to write some apps for the Android platform... No, it will not.
Android phones are at LEAST 6 months away from giving the iPhone a run for its money. - WiseWeasel, on 09/26/2008, -2/+7The problem is it's the USEFUL ones that are rejected, and the 100th tip calculator gets approved...
- judicar, on 09/26/2008, -6/+11First everyone complains because of all the pointless programs clogging the App Store, now they complain when pointless programs are rejected.
- inactive, on 09/26/2008, -0/+4You have to be kidding...
So the fact that Blackberry has been making phones for how many YEARS doesn't play into the equation of how many are out there? Keep in mind that when we're talking about the iPhone it's just that, a single phone. Apple got underneath the skin of EVERY phone maker on their first try with just one device. Apple's app store is a widely known and advertised feature, in fact I would bet that almost every single iPhone user eventually buys at least one app during the life of their phone. Can the same be said for Blackberry? Do the majority of Blackberry users even know they have an equivalent to the app store? I seriously doubt it.
If Apple can shake things up this much with only a couple of years in the game I can't even imagine what they'll do when they've been here as long as Blackberry.
I'm not some Apple drone, I just call it how I see it. The biggest selling point of Android (being open source) isn't even a concept that most people understand, let alone something they would ever desire. - AppleMacStud, on 09/26/2008, -5/+9LOL. No competitor is even remotely capable of stealing the iPhone's App store thunder or any Apple product for that matter. Apple products, especially the Mac is head and shoulders above the competition.
- wtfkeyhole2pro, on 09/26/2008, -1/+5Iphone is superior to the android as of now (09/08)
- WiseWeasel, on 09/26/2008, -0/+4Apple just recently shut down the Podcaster app developer's account for unauthorized ad-hoc distribution, so no.
- peestandingup, on 09/26/2008, -5/+9Maybe get it on a device that isn't actually 3 years old & we'll talk.

Plus, I may get hammered for this, but to me the icons & overall look/feel of Android looks kinda dated & cartoonish. - inactive, on 09/26/2008, -0/+4Blackberry created their own media blackout with bland products and a confusing OS. No one is out to get them.
- Laminarcissus, on 09/26/2008, -1/+5I agree. It's like the desktop market -- it doesn't matter who it is in particular, with Apple in the market any competitor will just have to resign themselves to the fact that they can only count on gaining a 92% market share.
Apple's just too powerful to give away any more.
(If you're going to just cut-and-paste the same comments between threads I figured I might as well just cut-and-paste my responses. I guess now everybody knows now that we're not posting from iPhones...) - mizike, on 09/26/2008, -0/+4I know I'd rather spend alot of time and resources developing something so I could give it away for free as opposed to selling it for a profit. That's why all the best applications run on linux.
- Laminarcissus, on 09/26/2008, -1/+5Let me just say: That will never, ever happen.
Although there is one thing I do agree with -- only Apple would give their users the ability to load apps on their own and have the balls to call it "revolutionary." - ptsuk, on 09/26/2008, -1/+5uh you mean that 1gb micro sd card? easily expandable any time there after? 8 gb is going for 20 bucks, 16gb due out end of the month 32 within 6 months.
Seems innovation expandability is foreign to you my friend.
the 1gb that people keep touting about "max" is the data stream from tmobile who in the fine print indicated that it may throttle you down to 50kbps if you exceed 1 gb of bandwith in a months time for the remainder of the month, to which you just use gprs or use it in conjunction with the 3g network. I have gprs right now and stream movies from my home box all time time at decent quality. - Scurro, on 09/26/2008, -0/+3The 1 gig softcap has been removed by T-Mobile.
- inkswamp, on 09/26/2008, -2/+5Two more:
Who cares? - colincornaby, on 09/26/2008, -4/+7Apple will be fine. Next conference Apple will announce this "revolutionary" new feature for the iPhone where people can load on apps without the app store. They'll gab on about how much innovation it took, and everyone will be happy.
I'm surprised people haven't figure out that this is how Apple works. - Laminarcissus, on 09/26/2008, -0/+3And do you seriously expect that five years from now the Android platform will only carry 2% of the market?
iPhone will will grow in both adoption and application base, but at no where near the exponential speed of the open-source, 100% revenue model of Android.
G1 is the just the starting gun, the howitzers are on the way, and iPhone's approach will keep them as a niche player. - ptsuk, on 09/26/2008, -0/+3i'm sure you're right however i think you under estimate the sheer draw of shiny things draw people of the slanted brow cling to.
People like the chrome and shiny black its the only reason why anyone would by non closed brick of an iphone with a development environment of a gulag. - r3zonance, on 09/26/2008, -0/+3'which is why it won't be called "multitouch"'
You'll be confusing trademarks and patents there. A patent is the idea/implementation, not what it's called. Ergo, if Apple has got patents on multi-touch on mobile phones then HTC can expect a lawsuit. - inactive, on 09/26/2008, -0/+3So if the determining factor is availability then why has the most sought after and talked about phone been one of the hardest ones to get?
And I hate to break it to you but developers don't come before users, it's the other way around. If android can't drum up the kind of hype built around the iPhone (I can't imagine a more monumental task) then why would any developers spend time and money creating apps for it when they can double their ROI with the iPhone, regardless of the restrictions Apple puts in place. - sgyoung, on 09/26/2008, -1/+4Linux runs on older and newer hardware, therefore it should easily overtake the market.
- Laminarcissus, on 09/26/2008, -1/+4After that, however...
- jptolife, on 09/26/2008, -2/+5Again, NO.
- WiseWeasel, on 09/26/2008, -0/+3Most of said hardware is locked down to prevent the user from modifying it without the handset vendor and carrier's support.
- directrix13, on 09/26/2008, -3/+6Looks good to me.
- ptsuk, on 09/26/2008, -3/+6bah why look like a fanboi tool by standing in line for a "phone", that will be obsolete in less than two years?
Why google and tmobile allowed the easy way to existing customers and allowed us to straight get one delivered free of charge and of signup fees to get the phone sent to our homes.
Its 2008 physical stores releases are soooooo 06'. - Gohan5052, on 09/26/2008, -1/+4Well im sure they developed and released the iphone over a weekend so it it wasnt old by the time it came out.
plus open platform = it looks however u want it to look - chromerium, on 09/26/2008, -1/+3I hope so. If only half of the dumbass developers writing ***** apps disappear for the Android platform, it will make my day.
- Murdats, on 09/26/2008, -0/+2yes, but do you realise that linux has the largest market share when you include more then just the desktop market?
- HolyChimp, on 09/26/2008, -0/+2"They'll stay a niche player in phones just like they are in computers."
And MP3 Players.
Wait... - Gohan5052, on 09/26/2008, -0/+2i guess its the operating system that makes macs cost so much then cause it sure isnt the hardware. good thing i can run osx and windows on my pc and still pay alot less for a better system.
- Laminarcissus, on 09/26/2008, -0/+2God, if only Apple would release the iPhone Ron Paul edition. Digg would be so excited it would start impregnating other web sites.
- inactive, on 09/26/2008, -1/+3Yes that's always the first consideration of most users when buying new products! Just look at how many people are using Linux compared to Windows and Mac!!
Oh wait... - z3rr0, on 09/26/2008, -0/+2Consumers don't use servers, I was thinking desktops.
