- B1665r, on 07/18/2009, -1/+19thousands and thousands of farting sound boards, and flashlight applications on the other hand...
- ChiffX, on 07/18/2009, -5/+20Apple? Games? No.
- Cruelapollo, on 07/18/2009, -9/+23You know the games are great because they're the same games you played five years ago on your PC.
- Gibletoid, on 07/18/2009, -1/+14You are aware that the 360 has roughly a 14-17 percent failure rate, aren't you?
I am currently waiting for my courier box to ship mine back, and get a replacement. They tried to save the environment by using lead free solder, which creates eventual breaks in the joints from being heated and cooled so many times. The lead adds flexibility to the solder.
Kudos to MS for extending the warranty 3 years beyond the date of purchase for this sort of failure.
Not to mention the 360 can be heard screaming anywhere it is in the room.
Sorry, what was that about MS's quality hardware again? - RoroCo, on 07/18/2009, -0/+12You must not work in corporate America...
- brainboy7777, on 07/18/2009, -3/+9I'm sorry, but what experience does Apple have with video games, besides the "games" on the iphone?
- overnine9k, on 07/18/2009, -3/+9It's funny because AppleTV adoptions is worse than Zune which Apple fanboys like to make fun of so much.
- macmcraeart, on 07/18/2009, -0/+6you are the mc escher of the english language.
- randyspriggs, on 07/18/2009, -0/+5I really don't see this happening , the market is already crowded enough with all the consoles , handhelds and PC titles
- Zarokima, on 07/18/2009, -2/+7http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Bandai_Pippin
- inkswamp, on 07/18/2009, -0/+5Apple had a game console out in the 90s. It was crappy but they did it before MS.
Not that I care, but if you're going to be a platform fanboy at least make half an effort to get the basics right. - overnine9k, on 07/18/2009, -0/+5"With the success of the Wii its not hard to tell the majority of console owners prefer something simple, accessible and cheap as opposed to what is arguably a higher quality experience."
But but but I thought Apple was all about "higher quality experience" at a premium, Cheap and Apple don't go together. - overnine9k, on 07/18/2009, -1/+5MS had a lot of experience pre-Xbox. Where do you think all the APIs come from?
- norman619, on 07/18/2009, -4/+8Really? Can you tell me what major game vendor is making CURRENT games for Mac?
I hope that was just sarcasm. - jasmus, on 07/18/2009, -2/+6Probably the same amount Sony had pre-PS1. Or the same amount Microsoft had pre-Xbox.
- overnine9k, on 07/18/2009, -0/+4Apple is the least developer friendly company out there.
- whatthefu, on 07/18/2009, -1/+5I can't see Apple sticking its foot into the video games market. I mean yeah as consoles evolve into multi-media things I could see how an Apple product would be appearing, but Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo are already entrenched in the market. Also, who the hell has Apple TV?
- mrsteveman1, on 07/18/2009, -0/+3Microsoft has been pretty clear on this point, they want to be the (monopoly) provider of software for an ecosystem of hardware devices. The only time they stray from that plan is in cases where it wouldn't work (xbox) and where they have no choice because of a competitor.
Microsoft isn't going to make PCs unless Apple starts eating their lunch in the computer market too. Apple already destroyed the playsforsure market with the iPod and are bitch slapping Windows Mobile as we speak, but unless Apple can inch its way past 30-40% market share in the PC world, i think MS is going to sit back and let the OEMs sell the complete widget.. - TheMu, on 07/18/2009, -0/+3Thank you. Every time I hear someone talk about Apple and gaming, I say, "Have you ever heard of the Apple Pippin? No? There's a good reason for that. Shut it."
- KAMiKAZOW, on 07/18/2009, -0/+3Even though the article constantly spoke about Microsoft, the company that should really be concerned is Sony. Pretty much every subsidiary of Sony is currently losing a lot of money. Apple, Nintendo, and Microsoft are printing money these days, while Sony makes one stupid move after another.
New overpriced PSP instead of a PSP cell phone to compete with the iPhone, removing PS2 compatibility from PS3, still trying to push Memory Stick into many devices instead of SD, etc. - Janv1er, on 07/18/2009, -2/+5Who knows?
The made a phone when nobody was expecting it. - sholt, on 07/18/2009, -0/+3Well, there's the Pippen... but I'm assuming you mean good/sucessful experience, so we can't really count that one.
- eibiee, on 07/18/2009, -1/+4Get your facts straight, sonny.
- the8thbit, on 07/18/2009, -0/+3You have a strange understanding of the word 'compete'.
- eibiee, on 07/18/2009, -0/+3What about PlayStation?
- tnoy, on 07/18/2009, -0/+3Best comment I've read all week.
- brandon28139, on 07/18/2009, -0/+2As far as Apple TV becoming a game console, it has some serious amping up to do for today’s games. An 800 MHz proc is not going to cut it with today’s games. Some idiot made a comment before about games = directx = microsoft. You need to do some research dumbo. Games are usually ported to the Microsoft DirectX API. They are typically created in another API. Yes, I worked as a game developer before becoming a systems analyst at a Data Center so I do know what I am talking about. Apple now uses OpenGL which is the industry's most widely used, supported graphics API. Apple could totally make a game console and have the same games other consoles have. Too be honest I don’t know why they would want to though. I know people will disagree with me but they did on the iphone too and guess what.
- sodoh, on 07/18/2009, -2/+4"Can you tell me what major game vendor is making CURRENT games for Mac?"
Electronic Arts. (just released Sims3 a few weeks back)
Blizzard.
id Software.
Konami.
Deep Silver.
There are probably more but that is off the top of my head. The FUD of you can't play games on the Mac or that games don't exist is pretty old and incorrect.
Actually there was a news article recently that major game publishers are flocking to the Mac. - norman619, on 07/18/2009, -3/+55 years ago? I think you are being a bit optomistic.
- tboutcher, on 07/18/2009, -0/+2Lets see EA the biggest and Activition/Blizzard the second biggest third party developer.
- suldar, on 07/18/2009, -0/+2I already have a device that can play HD movies, browse the internet, play games, video chat, play music, etc. It's called a computer hooked up to my HD TV. I hate that there are so many companies trying to divide up all the games I want to play between so many different devices when they could all be played on my computer. I would happily pay the game developers directly for games that I can play on my computer. I like the model of either buying a system put together by a company like Dell or putting it together yourself and they can both use the same software. I also wouldn't mind buying special controllers accessories for games as long as everything plugs into my computer. Hooking up a computer in the living room is the way to go IMO.
- bradleyland, on 07/18/2009, -5/+7Heh. The irony here is that Microsoft actually makes pretty good hardware. I really like my XB 360, and I'm a diehard MacBook user.
Off topic: Microsoft ought to build their own line of computers, with drivers developed in house and maintained with a direct conduit through the most stringent WHQL testing. - Beatmiser, on 07/18/2009, -0/+2@norman " Now please share some tripple A titles being released for Mac."
Starcraft 2
Diablo 3
Games are suddenly being ported over as well like CoH and EvE. - modifiedbears, on 07/18/2009, -0/+2@jasmus
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DirectX - Louis11, on 07/18/2009, -0/+2"They can't even do games right on a Mac."
Developers develop games for a specific platform. Seeing as the gaming user base is largely Windows specific, they typically neglect to develop for OS X. - tnoy, on 07/18/2009, -0/+1@Gibletold
They used lead-free solder to maintain RoHS compliance. If they didn't they'd have tougher time selling it in the EU or California. - bdbElysian, on 07/27/2009, -0/+1Do we really need another proprietary gaming console trying it's hardest to get far too many exclusive games in its claws?
I'm amazed the amount of cash some people waste on own a Wii, PS3, 360, and a PC just because there are so many exclusive games. Man i hope OnLive isn't actually solves this problem. - rgersmrk, on 07/19/2009, -0/+1Here is my facts. Games (and hardware) sales have slumped for 4 months in a row to mark the biggest decline in the gaming industry since Sept. 2000. I checked my facts before I posted.
http://money.cnn.com/news/newsfeeds/articles/djf50 ... - sodoh, on 07/18/2009, -1/+2The point you said major publishers. I pointed out you were incorrect.
As mrsteveman1 has pointed out this is for a console, not the Mac itself.
Also I'd like to point out that the iTouch/iPhone is now considered a pretty good gaming console. You can buy games which are better then the DS for a fraction of the cost and your games continue to get updated by the developers for free (99% of the time). Plus your not swapping out cartridges to play a different game.
I am not sure what you mean as "years old" games on the Mac. I suspect you don't own one.
Oh and Sim3 is one of the most popular recent games (even though I don't like it). 1.4 million sales in its first week. That is PC/Mac combined as the disk is dual OS. Making it the most successful game EA released - sadler121, on 07/18/2009, -0/+1OS X is focused around OpenGL for graphics, same as the PS3, and (iirc) the Wii. That should make it easy to release cross platform games.
Of course it would also be easy to release games for Linux as well... - glasszach, on 07/19/2009, -0/+1Yeah, but its still a Zune
- modifiedbears, on 07/18/2009, -0/+1downswing? You need to check your facts.
- ASfinkterSezWut, on 08/02/2009, -0/+1OS makers provide a platform for developers to develop on... MAC doesn't care about gamers or they would make more of an effort.... ipso facto....
- inkswamp, on 07/19/2009, -0/+1@overnine9k
A company that hosts an annual conference for their developers and gives their development tools away free is your definition of "least developer friendly"? - obeythefist, on 07/22/2009, -0/+1iPhone/iPod Touch games on your TV. All that's missing is the game controller and a way to buy them. Don't tell me you think Apple can't pull something like this off. Of course they're not going to get into competition with PS3 and XBox or Wii, but I'd play Flight Control or GeoDefense on my TV like crazy.
- the8thbit, on 07/18/2009, -0/+1All games use DirectX, apparently.
- Beatmiser, on 07/18/2009, -1/+2So much ignorance in this thread. It's mind blowing. Sure PC's still have the market cornered on gaming, but honestly this isn't 2001, Apple's come a long way.
- harvinator24, on 07/18/2009, -0/+1Activision, Blizzard, EA sports. Infinity ward.
