- Omek, on 02/06/2009, -7/+258I have a feeling this is where they drop PowerPC support...
- ikeeel4money, on 02/05/2009, -52/+261OSX is already blazing fast I can't comprehend what leopard would do.
- diggface5000, on 02/06/2009, -6/+206I won't lie I'm pretty creeped out by geolocation. That stuff had better come with a big, easy to find off switch.
- raydeen, on 02/06/2009, -2/+108Seems like both MS and Apple are doing the optimization over new features thing this time around which is a good thing. Both OS's have enough toys, time to tweak them and make them perform better.
- jaypeg, on 02/06/2009, -7/+86Why does Mac need a touch screen interface? Think about it, who wants to be holding their arm up, touching their screen all day long. Apple is on the right track placing their multi-touch gestures on the track pad. They won't need to involve the screen until they develop their own tablet.
- brainiac8008, on 02/06/2009, -14/+93What lead?
- mchmarny, on 02/05/2009, -14/+90The Exchange integration across address book, ical and mail alone will make me pay. the speed gains.... just a gravy
- anonymousmedic, on 02/06/2009, -29/+104Yes, but what will this do for smug levels across the United States?
The release of OS X Snow Leopard could see a perfect storm of self satisfaction not seen since Park County Colorado in '04 - digitalpencil, on 02/06/2009, -10/+72OpenCL, GrandCentral, QTX, 64-bit kernel, 16TB RAM address, heavily reduced footprint & Exchange support otb.. doesn't sound like a service pack. the next service pack will be 10.6.2
- whytheam, on 02/06/2009, -34/+92because Apple tells me to
- mrBitch, on 02/06/2009, -11/+65@Murdats RE: "snow leopard is just leopard sp2"
Well, using your logic, then Windows 7 is just Vista sp3.
Since Leopard 10.5.0 has come out, there have been six FREE updates that you would call a "Service Pack" :
1. Leopard 10.5.1
2. Leopard 10.5.2
3. Leopard 10.5.3
4. Leopard 10.5.4
5. Leopard 10.5.5
6. Leopard 10.5.6
When Snow Leopard OSX arrives, it will update from 10.5.x to 10.6.0
Does this make it easier for you to understand?
Do you understand the version number system now? - mrBitch, on 02/06/2009, -10/+52Yeah, since buying a MacBook over a year ago, I was amazed at how much quicker OSX was after I upgraded from Tiger to Leopard.
FTA :
" Unlike Windows, each version of OS X has been more optimized than the previous, resulting in a snappier performance for users who upgraded to a newer version.
With Snow Leopard's focus on speed alone, and with Grand Central and OpenCL specifically designed to harness hidden potential in today's multi-core CPUs and GPUs, Apple could easily widen performance gap between OS X Snow Leopard and Microsoft's Windows 7." - inactive, on 02/06/2009, -2/+41A "hardcore" Windows user would probably be holding out for Windows 7 or already running the beta if Vista was too slow.
- Dalhectar, on 02/06/2009, -0/+37The Finder can use some help. From what I understand the Finder will finally be a Cocoa app.
- Azerael, on 02/06/2009, -0/+36The kind of person who steals a laptop is not the one smart enough to know how to get away with it.
- XeroXenith, on 02/06/2009, -4/+39@hardeep1singh: Get back into your fanboy cave.
- KSUdesigner, on 02/06/2009, -1/+34I agree with your sentiment, but it'll be a nice feature to have if your laptop is ever stolen.
- Chirp08, on 02/06/2009, -7/+39That honestly is my favorite "feature" of non-windows operating systems, they get faster with each release. Going from Jaguar to Tiger on my G3 Pismo back in the day saw major gains in performance. If your hardware is supported in a release it means it will be faster.
- raydeen, on 02/06/2009, -5/+36AFAIK, Snow Leopard is Intel only. The speed gains are coming from stripping out the PPC code (no more universal binaries) and optimizing for multi-core processors. So no, no speed improvements unless you get a new Mac.
- lvizon, on 02/06/2009, -1/+29@KSUdesigner: "PowerPCs never had multicores"
The last of the PowerMac G5s were multicore. - aiten, on 02/06/2009, -5/+33hardeep1singh you're obviously not a software developer.
- crownedgriffin, on 02/06/2009, -7/+32I don't really find Vista to be all that slow, but 7 is definitely snappier.
- Virgule, on 02/06/2009, -3/+27To carry retro-compatibility is a great burden to advancements. Just being the devil's advocate here...
- dajuggernaut, on 02/06/2009, -0/+24Granted it kinda sucks when they make a new OS that is not supported for your machine when it still has the horse power run it. But then again the new OS does not have to carry the excess baggage of backwards compatibility to support older hardware. It allows Apple to innovate more rather than spend all their time worrying about backwards compatibility.
- honesttussey, on 02/06/2009, -3/+26Idiot. Writing a 64 bit kernel is hardly a service pack.
- bushnoh, on 02/06/2009, -8/+29That's a very subjective statement.
- mrsteveman1, on 02/06/2009, -14/+35Vista isn't faster than XP even on a dual core 64 bit machine. Even if you throw 2gb of ram at it, Vista is slower than XP.
Theres a reason for that, but lying and pretending Windows has actually gotten FASTER is *****. - srodolff, on 02/06/2009, -1/+21Well, if she was my wife, she would simply want to update because it's newer......
- artfuldodga, on 02/06/2009, -11/+31its odd how some knock windows 7 for its lack of features, though there are actually many (google), those features coupled with major performance gains somehow do not equal a new OS yet when Apple intends to release Snow Leopard with stability and performance increases as a new OS, its just fine and dandy
- cor315, on 02/06/2009, -1/+20And now, the worst appears to be over. Last night's smug storm… has left thousands homeless. All across the Midwest, people are picking up the pieces. Cities like Denver and South Park are heavily damaged, but still all right. However, San Francisco, I'm afraid… has disappeared completely up its own *****.
- wallywallywoo, on 02/06/2009, -5/+23"And many specialized scientific apps can see even greater games."
Great games... sweet. - r3zonance, on 02/06/2009, -1/+19"Ehh Mail honestly doesn't even compare to using Entourage on OSX"
No, it doesn't. Mail+Address Book+iCal > Entourage any day. - idesign, on 02/06/2009, -0/+18Just let me book meeting rooms so i can toss Entourage... PLEASE!
- MtheoryX, on 02/06/2009, -1/+19Amen.
I'm just happy about the Exchange support. Entourage is a complete piece of *****. - inactive, on 02/06/2009, -5/+22
- SteveMax, on 02/06/2009, -2/+19"PowerPCs never had multicores"
The dual G4s and dual/quad G5s disagree.

(all with 2 CPUs on 2 sockets)
Multicore improvements should apply equally, no matter if the cores are on a single chip or in multiple chips. Remember that Intel's quads have two pairs cores with a shared cache in each pair, and cores in different pairs need to go through the FSB to talk to each other. This is the exact same arrangement as the quad G5, despite being in a single socket. - PecanHead, on 02/06/2009, -13/+29Are you kidding me? I own a Mac, but even I can recognize that the amount of knob slavering that goes on around here over Apple is ludicrous.
Apple has stated that Snow Leopard won't have many new features and will consist of mostly rewrites and infrastructure improvements. Hmm - sounds like an awful lot like a service pack to me. And you fanboys are talking about camping out at the Apple store to pay for the privilege. Give me a break. - inajeep, on 02/06/2009, -4/+20My wife has had her MacBook Pro for just over a year. She likes it, I like it but it hasn't been without printing and wireless issues. $120ish for a speed boost which really isn't a problem as it runs plenty fast for what ever she is doing. If there were other worth while features I can justify the upgrade. If this retooling and optimizing is really fixing some of the reoccurring issues I had then it should be a free update. Look at it from my wife's point of view, she doesn't know what the OSX name is nor does she care, she uses her Mac as a tool that at this time is working fine. Why would she want to update? Give me a reason I can give her.
- tidu, on 02/06/2009, -1/+17I agree. Finally I caved and upgraded to Leopard two days ago. ***** is it fast. Albeit i do have 4GB RAM, but the only thing that takes just as long as Tiger is startup. Waking from sleep and shutting down happen in the blink of an eye.
- allenb, on 02/06/2009, -1/+16On the iPhone, you're always made aware when Core Location wants to know where you are - and you always have the option of denying access.
I've no doubt there will be something similar in grown-up OS X, too. It'll be like the admin password prompt that pops up when an app wants to interface with the system. - avatarpalin, on 02/06/2009, -2/+17@ MRintheKeys Sorry you are a moron, Windows 7 is in fact version number 6.1
Check your facts!! - LuCiFer6, on 02/06/2009, -3/+17Same here; I've been waiting for Exchange Support for the longest.
- r3zonance, on 02/06/2009, -0/+14In Windows world, just for all you idiots calling this a "service pack" release.
A service pack is a roll up of all the security updates and bug fixes since the initial retail release (or the previous service pack). SP2 adding features was the exception in the Windows world.
So, on that note. 10.5.1, 10.5.2, 10.5.3, 10.5.4, 10.5.5 and 10.5.6 were Service Packs. 10.6 isn't a service pack.
Just as Windows 2000 (NT5.0) to Windows XP (NT5.1) wasn't a Service Pack. - VeritasAequitas, on 02/06/2009, -2/+15So what you're saying is that you're getting Windows 7 for free? Because it's essentially the same thing. Microsoft is taking the bloat out of vista. Windows 7 is what Vista should have been. And Snow Leopard is what Leopard should have been.
- digitalpencil, on 02/06/2009, -0/+13i think cubes are collectors items so you might be able to make some cash if it's in good nik.
- wastern, on 02/06/2009, -10/+23I play video games, therefore I have a PS3
- rotundo, on 02/06/2009, -1/+14@pyrates - no, they didn't choose the design because it was "slower on purpose". Software engineering is all about making tradeoffs. The reason it was slower was because they could not afford to take the time optimizing the code. Apple has limited resources, like any company. The early versions of OSX focused on adding features and stability, and making sure they released often enough to keep the marketing momentum. Now that they've got a more stable foothold in the market and all the "must have" features, they are putting their resources into optimization tricks.
The thing to know is that when writing code, there's usually 1000 ways to accomplish the same thing. Some of the will be slower, some faster. Some will be more obvious and some less obvious. Some will be harder to write and maintain resulting in more bugginess. Choosing the right method in each case is really as much art as science
So far, despite many criticisms I have of OSX, I've found it to be the best overall OS available. That says a lot that they are making the right engineering decisions. - dajuggernaut, on 02/06/2009, -2/+14Grand Central FTW.
- MacEnvy, on 02/06/2009, -2/+14Get a Dremel and jack a mini-ATX board in there, load it up with compatible hardware and make yourself a screamin' Hackintosh with a kick-ass G4 Cube case.
