- Nephersir7, on 02/27/2009, -57/+854Japan is impressed by innovation, not marketing
- DorXtar, on 02/27/2009, -41/+704Japanese phones already do everything better than the iphone. Twice.
- MetalFaceDumile, on 02/27/2009, -14/+584slap a Hello Kitty on that bitch and its good to go.
- Raider007, on 02/27/2009, -7/+404When I was in Japan a couple years back, one of my friends declared my phone as "cute", meanwhile, she paid to get on the train, checked train schedules, watched highlights from the Winter Olympics, got directions... all from her phone...
Here I was excited that I could play music and take a picture on mine... - mikeabundo, on 02/27/2009, -43/+439Expect Apple fanboys to bash Japan in retaliation.
- Nephlabobo, on 02/27/2009, -102/+466It's because they like good products, not crap.
- billizm, on 02/27/2009, -44/+342FTA: "And carrying around an iPhone in Japan could make you look pretty lame."
So, it's just like here in the U.S. ;) - Innuendo24, on 02/27/2009, -12/+236I'm willing to bet it's because Japan has cooler ***** phones
- LiquidSpark, on 02/27/2009, -37/+247It's because Steve Job's RDF can't cross the Pacific. They're not falling for Apple's BS over there.
- trafficlight, on 02/27/2009, -21/+210I don't think there are enough tentacles on the iPhone or enough pixelated genitals.
- Namakemono, on 02/27/2009, -3/+173...5 years ago.
- AeroZeppelin, on 02/27/2009, -14/+176Because iPhone's camera doesn't take quality upskirt pictures.
- then00b, on 02/27/2009, -58/+194The iPhone is too large for their small Japanese hands. There I said it.
- PeanutCheeseBar, on 02/27/2009, -18/+136Makes perfect sense, given that Apple's "innovations" usually mean releasing the same product over and over again with minor improvements made.
- deslock, on 02/27/2009, -1/+111It has to do with Japan because the same plan that seems reasonable here in America is more than twice what is paid per month in Japan. For example, 3G and free wifi is all over the place... why would someone think that having a "data plan" add-on is worth paying extra for? It should be part of the standard cost. But ATT here charges an extra $25-30 month (add the "corporate email" plan too right?) on top of the standard voice plan for an iphone. That's ridiculous.
Extra for text messaging? That's insane in Japan. A text message is just data, why pay extra for it when browsing a web page is more cell bandwidth than a text. Plus their messaging is text plus photo. The iphone is a big step down and they have the gall to charge a monthly add-on for it.
You'd be amazed at how much cell providers are nickel and diming Americans into huge bills. For example, here in America we've come to accept something like both the caller and the recipient use "minutes" when a call is made cell phone to cell phone. Essentially they are cutting in half the minutes we are actually getting when compared to other countries. - deslock, on 02/27/2009, -5/+105Not very. Toshiba, Sony and the other Japanese brands dominate their market. Predictably it's mostly laptops there and similar to the iphone situation, portables there are cutting edge and Mac has little to offer, other than it isn't Windows. But that doesn't resonate nearly as strongly there as it does here.
- WhiskeyLemur, on 06/30/2009, -3/+90...for 1/3 of the price.
- LimeParrot, on 02/27/2009, -4/+88AND SHINY, IT HAS TO BE SHINY
- Logicexe, on 02/27/2009, -0/+84... with a side order of bacon
- RoroCo, on 02/27/2009, -10/+84We will hear a "Japan just doesn't get it" soon.
- JKAL, on 02/27/2009, -1/+67No not really, there are various segments of the population that fall for fad diets and fitness videos due to marketing.
However the main reason the iPhone failed in Japan is because it does not introduce any thing new to the user.
In fact the iPhone has less features than most normal phones in Japan.
and 90% of mobile phone users integrate their life style to their phones, with features such as barcode reading and Japanese emoticons & tying your credit card and shopping with your phone's IC card via a scanner at the local convenience store or major department store, or your train/bus tickets.
On top of that a mobile phone in Japan is usually replaced with a brand new latest one at least once every 9-12months.
So the concept of buying ONE expensive mobile phone to last you a few years does not compute in Japan.
the only people I know and see using an iPhone in Japan are tourists or ex-pats. - nonymous666, on 02/27/2009, -14/+77From the article: "Panasonic P905i, a fancy cellphone that doubles as a 3-inch TV. It also features 3-G, GPS, a 5.1-megapixel camera and motion sensors for Wii-style games".
I'd take that over an iPhone any day, regardless of the "horrendous" UI. - inactive, on 02/27/2009, -7/+69Hate is kinda a strong word to use. By that definition the Japanese "hate" the Xbox, since the Wii and Playstation are more popular there, but then again, Sony and Nintendo are Japanese companies.
- mohrt, on 02/27/2009, -11/+71Out of curiosity, how popular is the mac in Japan?
- digitul, on 02/27/2009, -3/+59can you people not read? they don't think it was received well because it's over priced (apparently they aren't sheep that will pay the 'apple tax'), and because it lacks basic features. those reasons along with it being from an american company
- klowngoblin, on 02/27/2009, -6/+56my Softbank X01HT from 3 years ago had video conferencing, HSDPA 1.8mbit, a 2MP campera with adjustable focus and FLASH and 32GB capacity for memory, what the ***** does the iphone have being brand new?
the japanese arent nearly as ignorant as americans that only go for looks and shiny objects. - Denominator88, on 02/27/2009, -42/+91Because it's not made my Sony nor Nintendo.
- JonTheGoose, on 02/27/2009, -2/+50There's an app for that.
- TimmyGUNZ, on 02/27/2009, -7/+53The biggest enemy to our phone innovation in the US is the FCC. If our government operated communications the same way Japan does, our phones would be doing the same thing theirs do. This kind of innovation would force Apple to include these features in the iPhone if everyone else was doing it. Until we "catch up" with Japan with mobile communications, the are going to continue to look down on American cell phones the same way American's don't want to look like the unhip idiot still using a Discman.
- deslock, on 02/27/2009, -6/+48Japan just doesn't get it. They are so stubborn and prideful.
I kid. - utnow, on 02/27/2009, -18/+57Thankyou for the thought provoking and useful comment.
- sadilak, on 02/27/2009, -5/+43The Kind of games that the japs likes are not available on the 360
- Charlotte_Web, on 02/27/2009, -3/+41Here's a demo of the Panasonic P905i that the Japanese author of the Steve Jobs bio uses:

HOLY COW! Makes cellphones in the US look downright antiquated! - jaythewise, on 02/27/2009, -21/+58Good job Japan for calling out over-rated Apple crap. They also do the same to expensive MACs.
- DouglasQ, on 02/27/2009, -11/+46Costs less to fly to Japan and pick up a free one.
- scottk59, on 02/27/2009, -7/+41"I'm not an Apple fanboy, the only Apple products I own are an iPhone and an iPod."
Contradicting yourself in a single sentence is an art. Bravo. - Malarie, on 02/27/2009, -17/+50Simple..
The Japaneese are allergic to *****, and no offense, but I think america is just full of it ! Why is it cool to buy an iphone? My mom always told me: "ma boy, beauty does not put food on the table" - PixelPusher74, on 02/27/2009, -4/+35Usually what's new over here.... is kinda old over there..
- NarcoticHobo, on 02/27/2009, -1/+30I just got back from Japan last week and I have to say the phones there are quite stylish, and the UI beats the pants off of anything offered on a regular phone in the US. Where the Japanese lack though is in PDA style phones, the Japanese brand offerings are pretty slim there, and HTC has stepped in to fill the gap. Also apparently the blackberry launch this week went incredibly well, with almost every store in Tokyo selling out of their stock.
- ZakColeman, on 02/27/2009, -4/+33They are just pretending to hate them so they can get them for free. Genius! (not the apple kind)
- joe90210, on 02/27/2009, -84/+112the japanese only care about one thing, the length of the spec sheet. Their phones are packed with a bunch of stuff but they work pretty clumsily and they have absolutely no sense of taste, especially the UI which are horrendous
- nbluth, on 02/27/2009, -3/+31Its because by keeping the west a few generations behind the cell phone companies can lower their costs. Seriously, I just got the LG Dare which is about a year old in Canada yet when I asked my Korean friend about it she said that it was a really really old phone.
Also the iPhone is a piece of ***** compared to other smart phones on the market here, why should it do good over there when they have EVEN BETTER competition. - inactive, on 02/27/2009, -4/+31There are no tentacle raping games or emo RPG's for 360 that is why.
- DNAspark99, on 02/27/2009, -1/+28Here you go, take a look at the other options from the very same carrier (and this isn't even getting into au, docomo, or the other carrier's options)
http://mb.softbank.jp/mb/en/product/lineup/3g/inde ...
Specifically, take a look at the selection of Toshiba and Sharp phones; the choices from those manufacturers alone are overwhelming. Some of these phones have 10MP cameras!
Now jump to the next carrier...
http://www.nttdocomo.co.jp/english/product/foma/ - nonymous666, on 02/27/2009, -9/+36Maybe the consider "red ring of death" to be crap.
- inactive, on 02/27/2009, -1/+28you win.
gg - JCEEZ, on 02/27/2009, -2/+27Ehh... I don't know where you make your assumptions (aside from your ass).
Freakin EVERYONE in Japan has there white ear buds in on the train or walking down the street.
I think it has more to do with what the Japanese do with their phones. In America the iPhone was leaps and bounds above what we got, and what we use our phones for.
I lived in Japan for a little less then 2 years. Japan is huge on MMS (something that the iPhone doesn't really do). Also, phones there have streaming HD TV and all this other stuff which isn't supported by the iPhone too. Add that up with the pretty horrible battery life, and it makes sense.
While I think the iPhone is freakin amazing, I'm not suprised that it isn't doing that well in Japan. - bobburn1, on 02/27/2009, -1/+26they work on networks far superior to ours and many of the features would not operate as intended.
- marklestrange, on 02/27/2009, -1/+26Macs used to be VERY popular in Japan compared to a PC. (15 years ago)
They offered native Kanji (character) support when windows did not.
Looks like they have lost their market? - emotecontrol, on 02/27/2009, -2/+26I spent two months in Japan, and it was basically impossible to ever be alone in a public place, especially if that place was selling something. I don't suppose that the Apple store is any exception, and I wouldn't expect it to be indicative of any kind of interest in macs on the part of Japan in general.
