- Freps, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10How about downloading podcasts in any WiFi hotspot? Think a little out of the box here people.
- dragonmantank, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11@flag564
Uhm, you're thinking of Scientology I think. At least the mormons I know just tithe their regular amount that other churches ask for.
Scientology, on the other hand, charges you for classes, and if any of the information 'leaks out' such as in videos or their books getting into the wrong hands, they sue.
Completely different religions. - ayeroxor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10"Why is Apple filing a iPodcast Patent?"
The other day a telemarketer called me asking, in an "urban accent," if I was interested in "a unsecured credit cart."
Is the word "an" dying? - knodi, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14they want what everyone wants money.
- Greyarea, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8About 5 hours ago.
- scelestus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I am subscribed to 32 podcasts. Sync my iPod in the morning and listen to them during the day. If you have not entered the podcast realm, I suggest you do some poking around and see for yourself what a valuable resource this can be.
- Ninjab3ar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Or access the ITMS from you iPod: Download Podcasts, preview and buy songs, download games, maybe movies, etc.

"Apple is becoming like the LDS church. First build up a religion of zealots around one guy, milk the faithful for ever dollar, then sue the daylights out of everyone else."

Sounds more like Scientologists to me. - nfxmedia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5listening to KFI right now.
- jlebrech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Just rename the whole thing to Zen/Zunecasts to spite them, altho we'll still use the iPods.
What about OggCasts even? - foomojive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4listening to dance department right now
- databyss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4How about calling them what they've been called for the past 10 years... file downloads.
"____cast" doesn't make sense since there is no broadcasting of any information going on. - MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Can anyone link to a instance where Apple actually sent a cease and desist to anyone using the word "podcast"? Every example I've seen has been for spelling/ sound-alike variations of iPod.
- Greyarea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'm being dugg down for stating a *fact* ?
Riiiiiiight. - Freps, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5How about this one: Apple is planning to put WiFi in the next gen iPod, and sharing music iPod to iPod could then therefore be called an iPodcast (broadcast intra-iPod)...think about it. Then it wouldn't be trying to limit the use of "podcast," nor branding it as it's own, just using it in a different context.
Let's just hope it would be less restictive than the Zune! - healmachine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3With this filing It makes me feel that Apple really does not want to play nice in the podcasts space. First and foremost Apple needs to remember that they did not come up with the word Podcast and for them to try and exert their influence on sites and applications that have any portion of the word “Pod” or “Podcast” in it’s name is in my opinion not the way to build community devotion.
- dragonmantank, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@flag564's Video
I still don't see how they are worse than Scientology. Most of that video could be pinned on any religion out there (altering texts, wanting money, wielding power, etc). For a long time regular Christian churches were very liberal about how they interpreted various religious passages, and if you didn't pay the church enough you couldn't get into heaven, no matter how devote you were. Certain scriptures were not included in the Bible and have been denounced by the church proper as they, as mortals, decided what books should be in the Bible.
As for pologomy, which is normally used against TCoLDS, modern LDS do not practice it outside of 'facist' factions which are not accepted as true members of the church. In the early times of the Christian church, pologomy wasn't frowned upon anyway. Pologomy is something that is either tolerated or reviled depending on the civilization/time period that you are looking at.
I also noticed as I was watching part of the video (I listened to most of it in another window), they kept referring to a 'Mormon Fundamentalist' named Art. These are the kind of people the actual church disapproves of (not because they are letting out deep evil secrets, but because they are ignoring decrees set forth by the church as church evolves). These are the people that the video seems to be focusing on, just like how the media itself likes to focus on fanatical Islamic groups and portray them as a stereotype for the Islamic religion.
And, just for note, I myself am not a Mormon, nor want to be (I consider myself more of a deist than anything), but I like to study religions, and I know quite a few Mormons. They are no worse than other religious families that I know. - joq100, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Ipodcast, podcast, zencast, zunecast, mp3cast, oggcast... that's why netcast makes so much sense.
- MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Any chance the "anti-zealot" zealots could wait until something ACTUALLY happens before screaming to the heavens how evil Apple is? Nah, that might require "thought".
According to TFA, Apple "MIGHT" be placing a new menu item in the iPod hierarchy called "iPodcasts". According to TFA, Apple didn't go after people for using the word "podcast", but the word "mypodder". That was probably close enough to iPod for them to consider the C and D.
Apple, like every other company with intellectual property out there, defends its trademarks. Anyone remember the brouhaha over the domain mikerowesoft.com? Until Apple actually tries to sue someone for using "podcast", this is a non-issue. - ravenpen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Isn't this whole thing old news?
The stories about Apple trying to trademark “iPodcast” started popping up over a month ago.
At that time it was noted that “Podcast” was considered generic and in the public domain.
Shortly after Apple went after the makers of “mypodder” software for infringing on their trademark. This somehow set off a firestorm of people saying that Apple was going after podcasters to which Apple formally replied that it was not and would not.
Evidence of such a statement can be found below:
http://gdayworld.thepodcastnetwork.com/2006/11/29/dave-gray-gets-a-letter-from-apple-authorizing-podcast/ - MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Unlike the Zune's pretty useless 3 days 3 plays then PFFFFT! WiFi, having the device (any device, not just an iPod) sync to update content wirelessly would be useful. Having the device capable of contacting whatever store (not just iTunes) you purchase or download your content from and getting it without having to sync back would be useful.
Freps,
flag is unable to think outside of any box that isn't slamming Apple relentlessly. He's is the prototypical anti-zealot zealot and essentially harmless. Kinda like dachshunds, loud but useless. - MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I do have to give flag props for this,
"#2 What is Apple going to do, allow you to send DRM free music to another ipod with no strings attached? Please."
He is absolutely correct on this. Apple (or MS with the Zune) will not be allowed to send non-DRMed copyright material from one iPod to another. Even if the material is not copyright, Apple won't be allowed to do this. There is no way for Apple (or MS) to determine the difference between something like a podcast and MP3s that you have ripped from your own collection legally. Therefore, the content providers and copyright holder won't allow it without serious legal ramifications.
This isn't the fault of MS or Apple. Just the way it is.
The Zune's WiFi feature is lame. Not because of the 3 days 3 plays, they have no choice in that and I don't slam them because of it. It's lame because that's ALL it does. - Greyarea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Oh - and recorded one last night.
- nfxmedia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2lesty. You can't be serious. The RIAA made DRM our only option. Don't blame the messenger.
- Ninjab3ar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@MrUnderbridge
The reason people hated the WiFi wasnt because Apple wasnt using it, it was because of the way the Zune was implementing it. If the Zune AT LEAST allowed you to access the marketplace from a Zune and purchase music on the go, it would have been nice. An even better addition was to be able to share music with other Zune users online, fostering a much, much stronger community than they have now. the latter feature would have been good, even with the rediculous 3play/3day rule. The fact that Microsoft did not capitalize on these possibilities made the Zune's WiFi capability useless, leaving you with a larger, clunkier, alternative to the iPod with less battery life. - jmontana66, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It appears that "its", meaningful punctuation and the word "there" are all dying as well.

After watching this, the Scientologist seem sane.

You must not be too familiar with Scientology...
http://www.xenu.net/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientology
An excerpt:
"Xenu (sometimes Xemu) is introduced as an alien ruler of the "Galactic Confederacy" who, 75 million years ago, brought billions of people to Earth in spacecraft resembling Douglas DC-8 airliners, stacked them around volcanoes and blew them up with hydrogen bombs. Their souls then clustered together and stuck to the bodies of the living. The alien souls continue to do this today, causing a variety of physical ill-effects in modern-day humans." - ayeroxor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You care so little, you had to come in here and tell everyone.
You're like those stupid little ***** that hop in every TV thread and manage to work into conversation the fact that they don't own a TV in hopes of seeming special.
You're not special. Special Ed maybe. But not special. - macniatic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The same thing people said about Apple more than 5 years ago.
Apple is stronger than many other companies and have something that very few companies have, a very faithful customer base. - fishbert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@knodi
"they want what everyone wants money."
-------
Ok, but podcast authors make little (if any) actual money. It's not a profitable medium at all, rife with amateur hobbyists. I'm not too worried about Apple going after podcast authors, doing so only shoots themselves in the foot, for they're losing valuable content for their platform. (I know, they've gone after a podcast author or two already, but I chalk that up to mistakes by the legal department.) - borntobedown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They probably want to copyright the name for an iPod to iPod music transfer feature. You guys are making a huge deal outta this.
- Iccanui, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1who cares, they arent going for podcast. /shrug
Just makes me think they have no interest in trying to take over the podcast world. Why would they anyway, the second they do the phenomenon would be over and they surely know it. - goat2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2exactly. its been never for me
- dvdcr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Its a ***** MP3
- klepto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1idoubt it.
They explicitly use ipodcast and not vanilla 'podcast'. - patience, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2When was the last time you downloaded or listened to a podcast?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1OggCasts would be great i could play them on my Zen.
- DiscoLando, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I second your sentiment. Sheesh.
- devzer0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As I replied to the blog post:
"they have thus far shown an inclination to go after podcast directories and those that have a podcast aggregator with name podcast"
That's not accurate. Apple has gone after directories and programs that used "ipod" in their names, because Apple is trying to protect its trademark.
"a now defunct podcast directory that Adam Curry started "
You mean indiepodder.org, formerly ipodder.org. It's not defunct in any way, shape, or form.
Seriously, guy, do some homework before you post at a place that has "news" in its name. - MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Since Apple built in podcast creation support into GarageBand, I doubt they need a seperate app for it.
One app I've been keeping an eye on for podcast creation is "Ubercaster". It really is kind of interesting and once the bugs are worked out (I've had my Mac freeze a few times while using it), it could be a fantastic tool.
http://ubercaster.com/ - darkomen123, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Q. Why is Apple filing [for] a[n] iPodcast Patent?
A. Money - MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1s'cool. Not slamming you. Just wondering if anyone can link to an actual occurance of Apple suing someone for using the term "podcast". I don't think they can come up with one as it is a generic term and in Apple's best interest to allow people to use it as it advertises the iPod with zero cost to them.
Heck, there are people out there who honestly believe that you can't download an MP3 podcast without an iPod. - MrUnderbridge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Hmmm....never?
- MikeUnwired, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The main difference in what they seem to being going after is whether the target uses "Pod" or "iPod" in the name.
But, Leo Laporte's claim that we should start using a more open source "Netcast" over anything pod-whatever seems to be growing in value. - eleven, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Think iApps - iPodcast is probably something that will make podcasts.
- marinist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Macparrot-
Just going by those comments in the first paragraph of the article.
Of course, it makes little sense to me for Apple to actually do this. - doodlebumm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@flag564
You are embracing a very distorted view of things. The video you direct to is extremely biased by someone who is bitter towards the LDS church (for whatever reason) and gives blatantly misleading information, while at claiming that the information presented can be backed up by the LDS churches own publications. Practically any fact can be made to support either side of a controversy. Spin doctoring is proof of this. The information behind every statement made in that video can be spun either direction. The same thing could be done (and is done) against just about every religion or organization in the world. People with an agenda (or an ax to grind) do so because they are angry and want to lash out at the focus of their anger. Just look at all the people that speak out against eBay. Not everyone hates ebay. You can take practically any tidbit of information about eBay and spin it to show that ebay is the vilest of corporations. Hitler had his opinion of the Jews, and I don't think there are many people who would say he was spinning a truth about them. That type of biased opinion probably isn't correct, but you certainly have the right to voice that opinion.
People need to look carefully at the motivations behind someone's opinion. Without that information to guide, the opinion is suspect. In this video's case, I would say it is probably crap. - SirBotchness, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thats the point of this site, do you need to be taught how to be a member of this site? I thought this story was not worth being on the front page yet here we go, every apple related story gets barfed up there like apple users have nothing else better to do than digg or slashdot mac stories.
- marinist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1FYI--
Anyone who's received a cease-and-desist from Apple over the use of the word "podcast" should consider that Apple doesn't actually hold the trademark on that word. Take a look over at uspto.gov and see who actually owns the rights. Obviously, cyberspace coined the word first, and it was not part of Apple's initial iPod product identity. - TimorousMe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Apple did not "recently file" for this patent as the blog entry suggests. They filed for it in June 2005, about 18 months ago, and the application claims priority from a provisional patent application filed in May 2005.
It was however recently published. The US patent office typically doesn't publish patent applications until approximately 18 months after they are filed. -
