- roxgod666, on 07/05/2009, -7/+123My Windows 7 can boot up faster than my iPod Touch. What has this world turned into?
- Bacontastic, on 07/05/2009, -8/+123But...but...copy and paste!
- WorfoSAUR, on 07/04/2009, -8/+100Maybe I just can't understand the complex statistics behind such a graph, but it seems that the only thing that upgrading really affects, time wise, is start up.
Oh noes! My program took an extra second to turn on! - ThinkBox, on 07/05/2009, -6/+72I really disagree. Yes, the iPod Touch seems to be a tiny bit slower on a few things... but really when you think of the new features and stability with 3.0 AND all the new hardware interfaces allowed with 3.0 it makes sense to upgrade it.
Also, what was up with that benchmark app download and test, why did the 3GS take so long? No commentary on that? - CoreyFC, on 07/05/2009, -2/+46It is also the first 3.x release. Did we forget how long it took them to get 2.x right?
- ThinkBox, on 07/05/2009, -1/+33you dont need to jailbreak it to install a 3.0 firmware without paying for it. There is no DRM on the firmware file.
- mrBitch, on 07/05/2009, -2/+34Actually, you have understood the stats, and even the article summary mentions this, FTA :
" .. Though JavaScript performance has tripled, the new OS 3.0 adds a good chunk of time to startup the devices."
I think the big deal about the startup time is minimised by the fact that you only ever "reboot" the Touch (or iPhone) once a month or so... - firemaker103, on 07/05/2009, -2/+28Why? You could download 2.0 firmware for free.
- brianosborn, on 07/05/2009, -1/+19You could download 3.0 for free.
- MSPoints4Free, on 07/05/2009, -5/+21If you don't want to pay, wait for the next update, then go to a jailbreaking site and download only the firmware. Voila, its free.
- phogasmic, on 07/05/2009, -3/+18Sacrifice all of those new features because of start up times. What a stupid suggestion.
- s0ny, on 07/05/2009, -2/+15OOH MY GOD NOT 10 WHOLE DOLLARS.
How can I justify giving up 2 of my Starbucks coffees in the morning for something that will give me years worth of stability and speed improvements???
Jesus, its 10$...not like you have to buy a brand new touch. - wkrausmann, on 07/05/2009, -0/+13Landscape keyboard.
- SquareWheel, on 07/05/2009, -1/+13As I posted above, http://felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/ has all the firmwares.
- thetimekeeper, on 07/05/2009, -1/+12Yeah, battery life seems to have dropped on my 1G 3.0 touch, but I have also heard that its not dropping, but because 3.0's battery meter is supposedly more accurate. *shrugs*.
- exscape, on 07/05/2009, -2/+13Sarcasm or not, his point is entirely valid. Comparing a full-fledged desktop OS running on a C2D to a embedded ARM system is nothing but silly.
30 seconds for a phone to boot is also nothing but silly. - StubbyClapp, on 07/05/2009, -2/+13Load time for spotlight search: 2G, 3.0 = 3 seconds / 2G, 2.2.1 = never
Time it takes to turn on Bluetooth: 2G, 3.0 = 10 seconds / 2G, 2.2.1 = never
Time it takes to copy/paste: 2G, 3.0 = 4 seconds / 2G, 2.2.1 = never
How quickly you can scrub a file in quarter time: 2G, 3.0 = 5 seconds / 2G, 2.2.1 = never - GodsTwin, on 07/05/2009, -1/+12"Bluetooth, copy/paste, & a tripled javascript performance and you're worried about 10 seconds of boot up, here's a tip don't restart your ipod touch until you have 29 seconds of free time."
- amolkold, on 07/05/2009, -0/+10Oops, too late.
In my defense, I have a set of bluetooth earphones that just became useful again! - i4ybrid, on 07/05/2009, -16/+26A world where Apple is the new Microsoft. A new version of an OS that is slower and more bloated? Hi Microsoft 2.0!
What's that? They also sell iPods like Microsoft sells Windows?
You can get the Basic (iPod Shuffle), Home (iPod Nano), Professional (iPod Classic) or Ultra (iPod Touch) - tktackett, on 07/05/2009, -1/+11I'd like to know a little bit more about how these tests were performed and how many times each was done. Are these averages or a one shot deal? "Download the 99 cent app "Benchmark" by Matt Matteson and run it" iPhone 3G S/OS 3.0: "489" seconds....hmm...something smells a little off.
- Charlotte_Web, on 07/05/2009, -3/+12Yeah, nobody is going to notice an extra second here or there that OS 3 takes to do various chores. It's definitely worth the upgrade.
- thecheatah, on 07/05/2009, -0/+9but but p2p gaming. for now only important to developers.
- kawaiirobo, on 07/05/2009, -1/+10This is a fine example of modern day yellow journalism and sensationalism. Of course the author couldn't name it what it really is, i.e. "iPod and iPhone 3.0 benchmark tests" it has to be "WHY YOU SHOULDN'T UPGRADE!"
- SquareWheel, on 07/05/2009, -1/+10It can't be illegal if it's straight from Apple's servers.
http://felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/ - omarlassan, on 07/05/2009, -1/+9how the hell did you check your uptime ?
- ducksoup31, on 07/05/2009, -2/+10"If, on the other hand, cut-and-paste, Spotlight search, and streaming video apps like MLB At Bat are things you can't live with, you have no option other than to by [sic] the new operating system."
While I hate to wait an extra .7 seconds for Bejeweled to load, I'd say the upgrade is worth it overall. - BryanTravers, on 07/05/2009, -1/+9Well, I know this is about the touch, but when I upgraded my iPhone is has become SIGNIFICANTLY slower. It sucks. I want to upgrade to the 3g S, but I haven't heard good things.
- notyourbroom, on 07/05/2009, -3/+11One irritating thing is that I can't access my music or videos for about 1.5 minutes after syncing; I think the message says that the library is being updated. I assume this is related to the spotlight search needing to index new files. But compared to the old behavior, it's pretty annoying... Can't indexing happen in the background?
Edit: This article is only talking about the 2nd-gen Touch, though I assume the same things apply to the 1st-gen as well. - humanerror, on 07/05/2009, -0/+7I've noticed this too on my 1st generation touch. Battery life has dropped dramatically since upgrading to 3.0
- birch25, on 07/05/2009, -1/+8Copy & paste, Spotlight search and push notifications are really the only thing most iPod Touch users get anyway as most 3.0 features were geared towards the phone side of things. But you know what, that's enough for me to wait another second to boot (although a speed boost in 3.1 would always be appreciated).
- brdrk, on 07/05/2009, -2/+8Well what about apps? most apps will require 3.0 for updates, right?
- rasty, on 07/05/2009, -1/+7Buried as inaccurate: the tests are amateurish and incomplete, plus as reported in other comments it doesn't look like anything is actually affected for the worse besides startup times...
- mrsteveman1, on 07/05/2009, -0/+6iStat can show you your uptime
- renegadeafk, on 07/05/2009, -1/+7You're the one acting like a fanboy perpetuating the ridiculous "vista is slow and bloated" myth.
- Silvarant, on 07/05/2009, -1/+7The first time i upgraded to 3.0 on my (1st gen) Touch, the battery life was WAY shorter, from something like ~10 hours of continuous play to about ~3. I had a theory that it might be because when i upgraded, it loaded a backup from 2.2.1 that was jailbroken, and now after a clean restore, it seems to be better, but i can't be sure. And now apparently i'm locked into the software, which sucks
- roodammy44, on 07/05/2009, -0/+6Does anyone else hate business-speak like "non-issue"?
It's like paradigm... I think reading too much dilbert made me allergic. - NOFXY, on 07/05/2009, -2/+8@mrBitch
just checked the uptime on my Touch and its been running fine for 99 days 6 hours and 45 minutes :D no need to reboot here. so yeah, start up time really is a non-issue. - ThinkBox, on 07/05/2009, -0/+6I haven't experienced that...
- cthellis, on 07/05/2009, -0/+5...until 2.1, so... three months or so.
3.0 shouldn't be nearly as bad. Some kinks to stretch out, but just tossing out the App Store was all sorts of crazy for 2.0, and I bricked at least four times before 2.1 came out.
So long as THAT doesn't happen again, anything else is minor shiz. - omarlassan, on 07/05/2009, -1/+6i had problems paying 10 buck, so i downloaded it off the net
- tidu, on 07/05/2009, -0/+5I think the numbers were actual benchmark ratings, not seconds. Like I guess 100 is the standard benchmark, and the 3GS is just that much better?
But I will agree that the "results" were incredibly vague and obviously made in microsoft word - HTIZ, on 07/05/2009, -1/+6Coming from a Windows user...that "joke" sucked.
- scarz99, on 07/05/2009, -0/+4People who are hanging out on 2.0 firmware are going to have to update sooner or later, all their apps are going to need updating and will require 3.0 to run.
- kspanks04, on 07/05/2009, -2/+6According to that graph I can see why I SHOULD upgrade, that is a significant improvement in javascript performance. Copy & paste, and Bluetooth are also a plus. I rarely ever reboot my ipod.
- Mujokan, on 07/05/2009, -0/+4One day I hope to read one of these "inactive" comments before it is deleted.
- ermiller, on 07/05/2009, -0/+4Not sure how empirical this test was. I just timed my Bejeweled startup and it came in at 6.5 seconds, Weather loaded in 1.8 seconds, expedia.com in 10 seconds. I wonder what else this person was off the mark on...
- cthellis, on 07/05/2009, -0/+4Door.
Ass.
Way out. - bilbohicks, on 07/05/2009, -0/+4"couldn't give a *****"
"couldn't care less"
why am I seeing people use "could" so much recently? - Firespray1138, on 07/05/2009, -2/+6***** I'm still on 2.1 firmware, can't be bothered to re-jailbreak everything again.
