- schoate09, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Give it some time, it's only been out two weeks.
- mywhitenoise, on 10/12/2007, -8/+23so? That's just you, combat. Obviously you're not a fan of Apple.
I think iTunes being the number 1 music store, and iPod being the number 1 mp3 player, speaks for itself. - SilentSpyder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13I think he means most computers could run iTunes.
- sorrodos, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13"Why hasn't anyone done this Apple TV hack yet?"
A better question: why haven't you done it yourself? - YonicSouth, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Could the HDD handle the vibration? It would be awesome if I didn't have to pull my iPod out to sync up every day (ruining the battery at the same time!).
- DiggingDeep, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I haven't done this hack because I'd need an AppleTV first.
Hell, most people are still using FM transmitters for their ipod 'integration'.

So I'm not sure your 6 computers running in your house are what people should base the demographic of how popular iTunes is. Not to mention most households I'm sure don't have 6 computers and if you do you are probably an intelligent computer user which most people are not.
That goes for alot of people on the interwebs as well :p - jklyon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Maybe not most computers run iTunes, but a great portion of them do. Just look at all the music downloads. Just because your house doesn't run iTunes doesn't mean a great portion of the computers in houses don't. iTunes is popular, stop trying to pretend that it isn't.
/rant - cliffzdude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Very valid point. My question is this, if a Blogger wants to know WHY nobody has done they yet, why hasn't said blogger bought one himself and installed it in his own car?
"Somebody" means anybody but the author. - eccramer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I call ***** on the "Most hacked apple device ever" comment. The iPod has so many more hacks. iPod linux, Rockbox, as well as all of the hardware tweaks like HD upgrades and other little things. There is no way that the AppleTV is the most hacked Apple device ever.
- tracydanger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Very true, and if it's for music you want one in the car, an iPod integration would be much cheaper, have more space and less hassle to get it integrated. I can't think of any good justification to do this, but I also don't have lots of money laying around for stuff like this. If I did, I'd go for the mini install instead. That has a lot more potential.
- XISUPERMANIX, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Why hasn't anyone done this Apple TV hack yet?
As if you need more distractions. Maybe for minivans for the kids, but some minivans already come with a small tv and dvd player. - slasherx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@sannm
The problem is when you plug the device into a car power converter. You'll end up hearing the noise through your speakers most likely, or from your sub. So you'd probably have to get a dc/dc power supply for the apple tv to prevent the noise. I don't think what he said was FUD at all. He was just asking a question. - slasherx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Ya there should be no problem as long as you put on a bit of foam or absorbing material on the pc itself (could be without it too, but better be safe than sorry). I had one of the worst car pc installs a few years back, there were never hdd problems, just problems with the AC/DC power.
- zdiggler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You still need a Monitor to go with with. Most of the cheap screen that use for CarPC integrations use Yellow composite cable or VGA.
Unless you want to get a media receiver box that accept all kinds of connections. - mywhitenoise, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I'd use it for my music, not my movies.
- Combat247, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@mywhitenoise
I've got nothing against apple, in fact I aspire to own a mac one day, and I'm fan of ipods, just not itunes.
and yeah, it does kinda speak for itself, my bad. D: - ilgaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Apple TV does what it is designed to do, it is actually a "iTunes in a Box" device, not a computer. Do you expect to add features to your DVD player?
When everyone figures that is some Device rather than computer, they will happily watch their videos and listen to their music which is what that thing is designed to do. - whistlerpro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4That's rediculous! Just because a person might know how to get songs on their iPod through another means doesn't mean you're gonna do it! iTunes isn't perfect but it's not bad, some argue it's the best music player on any platform (Paul Thurrot)
- tracydanger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm one person that is computer savvy enough that actually prefers iTunes. Anyone, feel free to explain why iTunes is so bad. I find a whole lot of very useful features on it. I heard someone say they didn't like it because it asks if you want it to be the default player and also "forces" you to install quicktime (of course that person actually likes iTunes now that they actually started using it).
There's nothing wrong with you liking another player better than iTunes, but it's silly to assume that everyone feels the same way because you do. Just 'cause I like iTunes better, I don't assume everyone else is going to as well. As long as we as consumers have multiple options, each with attractive features and products keep getting better, I'm happy. - heresy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Maybe because it has been out less than 2 weeks? People are so impatient these days.
- blangley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm an Apple user, however why do i need to 'hack' the AppleTV to do what I need. I wish the AppleTV was 'legally' more flexible.
- chrisxkelley, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@combat:
once you own a mac, you'll love itunes, and (gasp) quicktime too. i know all windows users hate quicktime because it's just a ***** application on windows.
windows software that is made for mac isnt all that great (wmp 9/office)
mac software made for windows is pretty bad too (qt & itunes). - adc86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Like HD, and running OS X, etc.
- slasherx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I meant HDD not PC. Too late to catch it to edit.
- chrisxkelley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@olddirtycr
learn to read.
even though the majority of some houses dont, the many single computer homes are likely to outweigh those few.
itunes is _very_ popular. - dnields, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6"It has not, however, been installed in a car yet. Here's why it should be."
Here's why it SHOULDN'T be...
Its a flipping car! Who needs a television in their car? And before anyone gives me that crap about kids needing
to watch something to entertain them on trips, maybe you should ween your little darlings from the video babysitter instead of broadening its scope.
TV and videos in an automobile is one distraction people can do without. - Jagwire2k, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3From someone who has a mac mini installed in their car, the problem with this can be summed up like so:
Taken from http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/maccar/100252-official-appletv-maccar-thread.html
One of the negatives to using the AppleTV is the power supply.
I made an inquiry with Carnetix and Mike H. over there said, "Unfortunately, from what I understand this thing has a built-in AC power supply. Perhaps someone can open one up to see if the AC supply can be removed/bypassed." - tofuComputer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This would be great if it became the norm. Imagine a "drive-thru pod station", where you could pull up, park and wirelessly purchase new stuff, all while on the road.
- tacom8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Are you sure about that? looking at the anandtech dissection pictures it looks like the power supply is a separate portion that plugs into a header on the main mobo... seems like it would be easy to rip that out and build a PS for these babies. (only seems to need a 5V rail)
i think this might have some legs after all...

http://www.anandtech.com/showimage.html?u=http://images.anandtech.com/reviews/video/apple/appletv/wirelesscard2.jpg - tracydanger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I agree, but you may be able to make a case for it being the most hacked apple product within the first two weeks or at least the most 'hack hype' in it's first two weeks (thanks to digg submissions).
- daines88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, but they're all software hacks. So far all the hacks on the Apple TV have been hardware (except installing OS X on it).
- adc86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Check out Azureus-- with OS X now running on it, there's a few remote queing solutions that would work really well. I'd bet you could even do it without any more than the SSH/Firewall hack...
- etx313, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Because I already have a ppc Mac Mini in my car. /shrug
- HairyPoter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So many hacks being created for Apple TV debunks that M$ theory that Mac OS X is not exploited or has no virus due to its small number of users compared to windoze. When there's a door, people hack.
- mywhitenoise, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I'd buy it if I could easily install it in my Prius.
- bemenaker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You have 500 machines in your office running iTunes? Why does your net-admin still have a job?
- craig4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I can really see GMC taking advantage of something like this. They have a lot of SUVs and trucks that this would be really good in with kids and long road trips.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ok, i will buy an apple tv, when i can que torrents to download to it (torrent client on the device itself that i can control remotely) , and get it to play avi's . *waits*
- lindapuzhgena, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Amazing. Is anyone able to open this link? http://fishtalks.blogspot.com
- skellener, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1> The AppleTV is even smaller than the Mac Mini,
> so finding room in a glove box or even behind the dash shouldn't be a problem.
Actually while the AppleTV is indeed thinner, it is BIGGER (7.7"x7.7") than the Mac-mini (6.5"x6.5"). - pixelbender, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Errr.. the ATV is rougly 65 square inches versus the Mac Mini's roughly 84.
- bemenaker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1You don't need to mod the hdd on an xbox to use it as a media center. It will do all that an apple tv will AND MORE for $100 and 30 mins of work.
Can your apple TV play quake? :) - sarahmaddelson, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Perfect! Such things make me a bit crazy.
- Dtarvoigd, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2umm. my mom's new chevy mini van has a built in 40gb (that is upgradeable) hard drive that not only plays back music, but also movies, and you can play games on it too, the only thing it doesn't do is sync wirelessly, you have to take the hard drive out and plug it up via usb cradle to sync, so the article is wrong there are in car systems that can do everything the appleTV can do coming from the factor.
- mvn3k, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2maybe no one cares.....
- pdhoang, on 10/12/2007, -8/+7i can almost balance out combat247. we have 5 computers in our apt. they all run itunes.
- nubnub, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5I'd rather build a custom machine and run linux
- meshman, on 10/12/2007, -22/+20"The AppleTV is a device that's designed to be used in conjunction with a Mac or PC running iTunes, which, let's face it, most computers do."
Most computers run iTunes? What dimension do you exist in? - olddirtycr, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2If most people don't run it, then it's not a great portion ey?
