"OMG! Can the overanalysis of everything Apple come to an end sometime soon? This is getting ridiculous."
I'm getting sick of these comments... , i don't care for anything Microsoft/Dell/Gaming related but I certainly don't add pointless comments to those digg related articles. - Aleks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You notice that people are promoting the stories? People *are* interested in apple products...
Next you'll be whining because diggnation calls it podcasting not zencasting. - Swift2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wanna bet that they needed to save a few bucks, and that this hot little Intel chip costs more? Out with the 8x, and the Firewire 800, in with--
- jodamiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1BECAUSE IT'S THIN.
no digg - Koskun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Simple question. What is the difference between a 8x SuperDrive and a 52x CD-ROM in PC's?
To me the answer is obvious, is it? - EmmEff, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5OMG! Can the overanalysis of everything Apple come to an end sometime soon? This is getting ridiculous.

Why are you wasting comment space? Don't digg it, skip it...
Apple / Microsoft both get frontpage news all the time, get over it... Apple is just very very successful at the moment for obvious reasons. - inkhead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Who the hell uses s-video? That was the 80s this is 20 years later. If you need to use s-video you use a damn dongle, don't punish the rest of us because you have old tvs from 20 years ago.
PC card slots, are done... in 6 months if they had left PC card slot you'd be bitching how your damn mac book pro didn't have expresscard.
Apple did the right thing. Most of the people making comments complaining about this and that are ***** idiots. Apple researched every detail before releasing it. They thought of all of the things you're bringing up here... And they decided against it. I'm sure they weighted their options carefully. - sparkmonkeyz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0size, and costs. but i bet in the future they will have them, also with the firewire 800
- Sal42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it's because of the thin factor... here's a little FAQ from Macworld Mag: http://www.macworld.com/2006/01/features/macbookfaq/index.php
- zwilliams, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Emilio has clearly moved from "Lets think about this realistically and actually research it" to "I'll just make stupid, unjustifiable comments."
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0to keep teh cost dow apple i think are trying to chage there high price reputation ie the mac mini and the ibook they just want to be seen as a more versitile company also i dont no whhy they are touting the 1" thick thing y thinkpad 15" is 1" ad its lighter also stop with the 1" "thin" stuff its thick not thin im not 15 years young im 15 years old
- TWiTarmy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0they used a slimmer drive.
- howdesign, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wait a minute. Why is Apple making a big deal about the MacBook being 1" thick? My 3+ year old PowerBook Titanium I'm typing this with is 1" thick and about the same weight. Did the Aluminum model get thicker? Why would they need to use a slimmer drive in a laptop of the same thickness?
- ersnyder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"dracula, talk of Apple dropping it is more about Intel Motherboard support right now than use. Firewire is used much more and is much faster for digital video, and works way better for external Hard drives, I would never purchase anything other than a firewire HD. If they didn't care about Firewire at all they would have cut it completely, I am sure it will come back... maybe... hopefully..."
Show me a external HD that can sustain a read/write speed that Firewire 800 provides. And when you can't find one, ask yourself if you really need it for your external HD. Fire Wire 400 does just fine, and in that case, you might as well be running USB 2.0. - kucing, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2uhm... to cut down costs?
- drag, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I expect because the generic ASUS laptop that they choose to form the basis for the Macbook wasn't aviable for the dual-layer dvd stuff.
News Flash:
Almost all Laptops are made by 3 or 4 manufacturers. IBM, er, Leveno, Gateway, Dell, and Apple all pretty much get their stuff built in the same factories.
Previously Apple had the powerbook made all custom-like. But the old Ibook they had made on regular generic PC manufacturing plants.
I fully expect that Dell or HP will come out with a laptop with identical features and capabilities and build quality as Apple.. just for 400-500 dollars less and with a regular BIOS and Windows XP home. - slut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I guess the drive isn's so "super" after all.
- dracula7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I PRAY TO GOD ITS A MISTAKE
(BUT IM GETTING IT ANYWAY) - AttroPheed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Why did Apple drop the 8x Double-Layer SuperDrive for a 4x Single-Layer?"
So they could charge corporate tools more for the upgrade while taking in more of a profit on the machine itself. - bigbikkuri, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Actually, if people care to look at Apple's website, it clearly shows the ability to contain an 8X DL.
Oh almost forgot:
http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/whatsinside.html
Please check the very last item listed under Storage. You'll see that it indeed can support one. Possibly in the 17inch version, and later on in the 15's?"
Actually, if Latentk would care to look at Apple's website, it clearly shows the ability to READ an 8X DL.
And people want to WRITE an 8x DL. - cclark2222, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'd say they are still trying to make money with the powerbooks. The 8x superdrive and higher-res display are just two reasons to still consider purchasing a powerbook.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The answer is simple. Make more money featuring it as an upgrade later on.
- ButchCivic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This might be a stupid question (I'm sure you'll tell me if it is) but are or when are 16x drives coming to laptops? Also, what about Blu-Ray (which Apple is behind) and HD-DVD?
- GMFreak8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm more concerned about the lack of an internal modem, rather than the lack of a dual layer DVD burner. I don't know about everyone else, but I go to many places that still don't have wireless or wired high speed internet, and a dialup modem is the only option for connectivity. It might be an outdated technology and it might not be needed in a desktop, but in a laptop it should still be included.
- dracula7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"can you see space needed for an iSight and a front row hardware hence no dual layer and no firewire800"
they dropped firewire 800 because it's the lesser used of the two, and usb 2.0 is becoming the standard... theyre just pushing technology standards. i dont see how the isight or remote would interfere---i think its more a matter of height&battery power - macattacks10, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0dracula, talk of Apple dropping it is more about Intel Motherboard support right now than use. Obvious that you live in a cave, yes. When did you last see a new Windows PC with a CD only drive? My year old Vaio has an 8x DL drive - bwilstyle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This digg comes from someone who has never even burned a DVD in her life.
- wakazashi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think Yogurt said it best, "Muychendising". It's most likely a marketing strategy. There might be a compelling reason such as power usage or the lack of a 8x that is slim enough at this point, but my guess is that it enables them to come out a few months later and offer something else to upgrade to.
I'll still buy one. I just don't need a super fast burner. Heck, I don't even *need* a burner. I've got a network at home with a mac-mini that burns DVD's and a dell that burns CD's. If I need something burnt... I'll use the ethernet connection or my external HD and burn through one of those. Why is the speed of a DVD drive such a big deal? no digg - rspeed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think Fanboydcs hit the nail on the head. There can't be many slot-loading SATA drives to choose from, so the chances of them being up to the latest specs would be significantly lower.
Further, it would _not_ be difficult for the drive manufacturers to make them a few mm shorter. Remember, slot-loading drives don't have a lot of extra room since they don't need the casing which surrounds the tray on other drives. - fanboydcs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Guys. its because its a Serial ATA Optical drive. God, alot of bad answers... THEY DO NOT MAKE SERIAL ATA DRIVES THAT ARE FASTER...
- kapkorn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It might be an issue for some but I have yet to burn a dual layer disc (due to cost) so it doesn't seem like a big deal to me.
- xenon221, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have plenty of dual layer firewire drives I can connect to as needed. To me, this is really a non-issue. For Apple, it is good-- they have some bonus features they can add to future MacBooks.
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0And that '86k pixels' is simply SIXTY ROWS out of 960. Stop making it sound more significant than it is you (once again for effect) retard.
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Don't waste your money on a Macbook.
86k pixels less resolution
only 4x dvd burning
no pcmcia card support so no EVDO at all
no s-video w/o a dongle"
The words of a true backward thinking retard. - nneonneo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm sitting on a Powerbook G4 right now...sad that it'll be outdated soon, but no problem, I'll get my own Macbook in a few years (this laptop should serve me faithfully for years to come!)
Plus I have a (vintage) Powerbook G3 next to me running 9.2.2 (upgraded from System 8.1!). How quickly technology changes... - frem001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have a DL Drive and have never burnt anything except a standard single layer dvd, but that's just me
- PseudoCyborg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The issue isn't so much the speed as it is the ability to write to a Double-Layer disc. People here really need to take the time to comprehend what it is they're reading.
- einsteindesign, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Gotta be power-related or supply-related. I can't imagine a downgrade without a specific reason.
- jk_baller23, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0It is most likely because it is 1" thin. They had to use a super slim superdrive instead of the slim superdrive.
- dracula7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0& its >kind< of a big deal because good technology never takes steps back... look at the ipods, theyre making them skinnier and skinnier without taking away any functionallity. the ipod didnt start ultra thin at the expense of battery life-this kind of thing doesnt suffice EvOlUtIoN.
it would have been smarter to make this a perfectly fast/efficient model without any regard for design... but one of the reasons im a mac users is because of their breathtaking hardware,,so whatever whatever. in a way form is a function :-) - dracula7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0firewire = obsolete
- MrScreenName, on 10/12/2007, -1/+080% precent of the media out there is 4x anyways, and who really cares, is it going to stop someone from buying a MacBook Pro, No absolutley not because Apple fans snatch up everything Stevie throws at you, trust me we can smell are own I'm a Nintendo fan.
Who Cares honestly, Not me, No Digg - DoTheFandango, on 10/12/2007, -1/+086k pixels less resolution
-- it's actually only 60px from the top of the screen down.
only 4x dvd burning
-- If it's really a big deal, go buy an external DVD burner
no pcmcia card support so no EVDO at all
--EVDO is a lost cause. Not many places are without DSL, and those who are probably don't want to buy a 300$ card to use 56k speeds.
no s-video w/o a dongle
-- IT COMES WITH AN ADAPTER
I should mention that NONE OF THOSE THINGS ARE EVEN STANDARD on a basic Windows Laptop, especially not the DVI-out. Sure the 4x DVD burner is a disappointment, but I seriously doubt you are going to be burning high quality videos on a Laptop anyhow. - p3lEr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0cost cut....
- kolop1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0aleks
who cares - spectre_25gt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"no pcmcia card support so no EVDO at all"
http://www1.us.dell.com/content/topics/global.aspx/vectors/en/2003_expresscard?c=us&l=en&s=corp
As far as the drive goes, who the hell cares if it's 1mm thicker? Give me a better DVD drive. Honestly, it's not like 1 inch is really all that thin anyway. If you really need a laptop that small, get a portege or one of the tiny IBMs. - SlashNot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0its a laptop, it shouldnt be your first source to be burning double layer media, a single layer is fine for a portable. get a desktop for heavy duty burning that is usually associated with dual layer
- hayden.evans, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0i must say that once u use one like i got to, you'll buy it. Trust Me. I did
