- MacParrot, on 01/13/2009, -52/+366Actually I know a lot of people who are technical and haven't bothered to jailbreak the iPhone because in most cases it isn't worth it to do so. To use it as a video camera? Really? The camera in it is barely worth taking still images with much less video. Different themes? A few apps not on the AppStore? The ONLY reason I can think of for jailbreaking is to use it as a 3g modem.
If your needs are such that you some of these things then don't buy an iPhone. I haven't because it isn't what I want in a device like this. Show some restraint - z00k, on 01/13/2009, -8/+960 Times on the iPhone.
- jparkinson, on 01/13/2009, -6/+92This article doesn't even list the best reasons to jailbreak..
off the top of my head
SBSettings - Toggles for Wifi, 3G, SSH etc accessible from anywhere with any app open
Notifier - Puts notification icons in the top corner for Mail, Text, Missed calls and voicemail
NES, GBA, PSX and Genesis Emulators
Soulseek Client with a media player, download music from soulseek over 3G... screw the Itunes wifi-store
IRC clients
Doom and Quake
A tweak to be able to have an exchange account active without having to type a password in to unlock the phone
MXTube - lets you download Youtube videos for keeps, also lets you force it to use the wifi stream over 3G for better quality
SpoofApp - lets you record phone calls and also includes voice changers and call ID spoofer
Thats just the stuff I have off the top of my head... you really have nothing to lose with jailbreaking and i'd go as far as saying you'd be stupid not to. - bumcheekcity, on 01/13/2009, -24/+91I was unaware I had to Jailbreak the iPhone, especially as I don't own an iPhone. I own a Nokia 3310, which is almost 10 years old now.
- BillehBob, on 01/13/2009, -5/+69Only reason I jailbroke mine is because I can.
- Bender, on 01/13/2009, -4/+63What risk? If it screws up, simply restore your phone back to factory defaults and then restore from a recent backup (which you should make just before you try to jailbreak it). THERE IS NO RISK!
PDANet alone makes the iphone worth jailbreaking. Then factor in SSH and some sweet ass themes. Not to mention a NES Emulator, and for Gods sake.... QUAKE ON YOUR IPHONE!. - locondcoco, on 01/13/2009, -3/+60what is the obsession with zoom? its a FIXED lens. all a "zoom" feature would do is make it blurry, on an already not-so-great camera. if you want "zoom", download the picture from your camera and enlarge it on your computer. its doing the same thing.
- LordPhoenyx, on 01/13/2009, -6/+60Try out apps before you purchase them? Let's be serious
How many people will pay for an App after using it for free?
Not many! - jordanknox, on 01/13/2009, -4/+56This article is crap and a bad representation of how useful a jailbroken phone can be. I'll give you a few reasons why I jailbroke and haven't looked back.
1) My phone still works perfectly, despite about 15-20 unapproved apps installed.
2) Stacks: I have Stacks on my dock, which houses quick access to several apps I'd want on my front page but don't have room for.
3) PocketTouch- I shuffle my music while I drive, and this app keeps me from having to look at the screen to find the Next or Back "button". I simply swipe anywhere on the screen, or shake it to advance. Very safe and convenient for song-flickers like me.
4) MxTube- like YouTube, but downloads videos locally. Good for when I want to show someone a video despite my slow ass Edge connection. If I have it downloaded, I open it and go.
5) DTunes: I hear a song I like in a restaurant and use Shazaam to identify it. Then I use DTunes to download it to my phone (through seeqpod). Piracy, but damned convenient.
6) QuickGold - tap the home button and search a whole gaggle of *****, including Apps for quick launch, Google searches, IMDB searches, SMS content, contacts, etc. If I'm looking for an app buried in layers of Categories folders, I tap the home button and open it in no time.
I could mention that when I turn my phone on and off, it sounds like a lightsaber, thanks to Winterboard and the theme "Star Wars Sounds", or NemusSync, which syncs ALL my google calendars to my Cal app OTA, or my 5 icon dock, or themes... but you get the idea.
It may not be for everyone- the cynics, n00bs, haters and closet microsoft fanboys, but it's for me. - DrunkenSavior, on 01/13/2009, -0/+52Video, or the monkey didn't happen.
- timusca, on 01/13/2009, -9/+50Let me know when you get the tracking figured out on your VCR so we can watch some sweet Mickey Mouse Club later on.
- Pattyo13, on 05/14/2009, -0/+41the only thing that keeps me using my jailbroken phone...
"categories" app. it puts all my apps in folders. i have a games folder, people folder for chat, etc. 1.5 pages of apps it a lot easier to use that scrolling across 8 pages - Dundasbro, on 01/13/2009, -9/+45Haven't we read enough of these? Blogspam. How many times can you copy and paste the same *****?
- blackinthmiddle, on 01/13/2009, -2/+36I'm a programmer and didn't jailbreak mine until version 2.2 came out and it *still* didn't have basic features I thought it should. I continually fooled myself into believe Jobs would allow things like video recording (as well as other features) until if finally dawned on me that for whatever reason Apple has no intention of adding these very basic features. I jailbroke my phone as soon as the 2.2 jailbreak came out.
I worked for an ad agency and we won a contract that got us a lot of money. To celebrate, they threw us a party and brought in a freakin' monkey! Rare is the day that you'll use video recording on a phone, as the quality sucks. However, there will be times when you're like, "I've just GOT to record this somehow otherwise no one will believe me." - sKizZz, on 01/13/2009, -17/+48I keep getting roped into jailbreaking my iPhone and every time I do, I heavily regret it.
The apps are not that great, although my hat is off to the many developers working to make a change.
Kills the battery life way to quickly as I assume multiple programs are running in the background and a lot of things are broken. - mwillems, on 01/13/2009, -9/+40What he said.
I am technical and have not bothered. The risk, combined with the very smal benefit, make it not worth doing. Yes, I would like to tune more and to have more capability (copy/paste, please, Apple), but life's short and I have other stuff to do. - planetbeing, on 01/13/2009, -2/+32Jailbreaking allows you to make your own decisions on what programs you choose to run on your device and what you do with it, that is, the verification of Apple's signatures on code is removed. It's a very small change, around 30 bytes in a 500 MB OS.
It just so happened that the programs you chose to run were buggy (usually people are attracted by themeing applications which make heavy modifications to the OS).
That's the problem with freedom. - Tylerbinski, on 01/13/2009, -12/+42Just jailbreak it already you pussies.
- drunkenoaf, on 01/13/2009, -4/+32To be honest, QuickPWN is so easy to use, with illustrations and guides for every step, even a non-"technical" person can jailbreak.
Or do the authors think you need to be at least at Script Kiddle 1337-ness to jailbreak an iPhone? - IphtashuFitz, on 01/13/2009, -3/+27I'm a fairly technical person. I've hacked my tivo's. I've installed custom firmware on my older Motorola phones. I build homebrew PC's and add custom electronics to my car. I also have an iPhone 3G, but this article doesn't convince me at all that I need to jailbreak it. The only app on that list that would potentially convince me to do so is the iPhoneModem one. But even though I already have the NetShare app on my phone from the few days it was available for download from the iTunes store I've yet to use it. There would have to be much more compelling reasons for me to jailbreak my phone. I personally consider the camera features in most phones to be overkill and hardly ever use them, so 90% of the "best" applications listed in this article are anything but "best" as far as I'm concerned.
- notaku, on 01/13/2009, -2/+25lol
a monkey.
epic story. - tghd, on 01/13/2009, -1/+24I thank god it doesn't!

- frishackbanned, on 01/13/2009, -0/+21"Rare is the day that you'll use video recording on a phone"
WTF are you talking about, half of youtube is video recorded on a cell phone. - wo0dy, on 01/13/2009, -7/+26The quality of the pictures isn't bad for a phone... heh.
- AndrewMoyer, on 01/13/2009, -2/+19My toaster takes better pictures on toast...
- Shazbuckle, on 01/13/2009, -1/+17Jailbreak allows you to pirate appstore apps, hrhr.
- 8bitflu, on 01/13/2009, -3/+19Only of Jesus.
- Foodstamp81, on 01/13/2009, -2/+17I believe that's unlocking you are referring too not jailbreaking
- warbrain, on 01/13/2009, -5/+20Exactly. I used a jailbroken iPhone until a few weeks ago when I had to have it replaced. Since the replacement I've stayed virgin. It just works out so much better. It's faster, the battery life is great, I don't need all that extra crap...
Jailbreaking is no longer needed for most people. - inactive, on 01/13/2009, -0/+13Don't forget that plenty of people are in the same situation as me. Upgraded to a 3G iPhone and have the old 2.5G just sitting around. I have a potentially very capable 8 gig touchscreen MP3 player, web browser, VoIP phone, gaming device, etc... just sitting around telling me to "slide for emergency" in 50 different languages. I imagine the battery life will be insane with the cellular radio turned off and although an iTouch would do all of this, I'm pretty sure they don't have cameras.
Jailbraking and unlocking will open back up all these capabilities and allow me to use it on local networks when I frequently travel abroad.
That being said I can't really see myself jailbraking my active iPhone 3G.
On a side note, I HIGHLY recommend opening up your AppleTV's true capabilities with Boxee. Holy hell that thing is AWESOME! Streaming over Hulu, the ability to play any file format under the sun, all with a VERY slick and intuitive interface. (it passed the "my-parents-can-use-it-on-their-own" test with flying colors)
I'll stop rambling on now... - enzyte, on 01/13/2009, -2/+14It may only take few minutes to hack it but when (not if) it messes up restore can take hours depending on how much content I have on it. I can't be without my phone. And eventually I will have to do a restore to update to the latest version of the OS again, then crack and redownload my apps. For me this is too much hassle.
Games like Quake and NES are just not that much fun to play on a small screen with the mini-controls they provide. It seems more like a brag factor to me and I've been there and done that with other pda's. I could download Cube from the app store for free but I haven't for the controls reason.
For me the benefits do not out-weigh the work involved. I just want my stuff to work. - MRintheKeys, on 01/13/2009, -4/+16You rebel.
- xsecretfiles, on 01/13/2009, -2/+14I honestly jailbroke because I can customize my backgrounds lol
but I have come accross unique apps like
Swily MMS
a better SMS app for landscapeand quick reply
Cycorder - video camera
Emulators
AVI player - konataXchan, on 01/13/2009, -6/+17I thought with a Jail Broken iphone they have an illegal apps store where everything is $0. Paid apps would be ripped for free.
- zeroshiftsl, on 01/13/2009, -1/+12My reasons to jailbreak are Quake, Reminder (taskbar notifier), PDAnet (modem), installing cracked apps and, most of all, the terminal emulator where I can run anything from ssh to metasploit.
- Nairebis, on 01/13/2009, -4/+15What is this FUD? Jailbreaking your phone does NOTHING to performance or battery life, unless you actively choose an application that runs in the background.
- Bender, on 01/13/2009, -0/+10OMG, I'm a jailbreak fan, but if you showed me that in effort to win me over, I'd run for the damn hills.
- newwatch51, on 01/13/2009, -0/+10I don't think there's much risk (you can restore the device) but I haven't bothered either.
- Lawrencediggs, on 01/13/2009, -1/+11I have the first iPhone. I am pretty tech savvy. My iPhone is jailbroken for one reason and one only. The fact that I reinstated my 2 year contract with t-mobile just before the iPhone was released and I am not paying the ridiculous cancellation fee. At first I tried the different 3rd party apps only to see that it put a real slow down on the devices OS. Mine is only jailbroken now so that it is unlocked.
- jbr824, on 01/13/2009, -2/+12I'm an IT contractor, and in the office I have my client desktop PC (with loads of restrictions), and my laptop. The client only allows internet connection for laptops over dial-up. PDANet has been a lifesaver - top-notch speeds considering i'm wirelessly tethered to my freaking phone. I love technology. And I love the developers for providing us the option to Jailbreak, and for free at that. Case in point, some people obviously won't get the value out of the jailbreak. Others, like me, can't imagine life without it.
- holyreality, on 01/13/2009, -0/+9I've been jailbroken for a few months now and have more than 50 unapproved apps/firmware mods and everything still works perfectly. as much as I loved my iphone before, jailbreaking makes it a thousand times more useful.
it's worth it for the GUI mods alone, like real wallpapers and new icons.
vivid + five icon dock + user wallpaper = gold. - jparkinson, on 01/13/2009, -1/+10@Goblin
The notifier is useful because you don't have to unlock your phone to see the badges.
Personally I enjoy the emulators a lot, they work well... just because you wouldn't use them doesn't mean they aren't good.
Your argument against Soulseek is moot. The whole point of the Soulseek client is you don't have to buy the songs.
Exchange.... I work in the IT department
Toggles... Yes I do toggle Wifi frequently... it eats battery especially when its listening for networks, and if you can make something easier and better, why wouldn't you?
Mxtube: Becuase then you don't have to wait for them to load, or search for them, or use your data... not everyone's data is unlimited and the higher quality stream is a big difference.
You're acting like jailbreaking is a huge hassle, or costs money... or takes weeks. It is literally about as easy as reinstalling the software regularly. I understand if you don't choose to do it, I wasn't trying to convince the world to jailbreak all phones. I just think this article does a poor job of highlighting the better advantages, and for the effort it takes I personally don't see any reason not to... other than to be a wet blanket on forums like yourself. - panic, on 01/13/2009, -0/+9There is virtually no risk
- KibibyteBrain, on 01/13/2009, -1/+10Try Cydia, not Installer if you want more free apps.
- warbrain, on 01/13/2009, -6/+15This is true. It's handy to try out apps before you purchase them.
