- dlan4327, on 11/06/2009, -4/+30Comment thread is pretty funny. It starts of about Apple then quickly becomes a Coke Vs Pepsi debate.
Incidentally Coke is the greatest drink. Ever. - philomatic, on 11/06/2009, -6/+28Even if you are an Apple hater you've got to admit the company has made amazing leaps since Jobs's return:
OSX
Intel
iPod
iPhone
Webkit
and yes even the Apple stores - L0NER, on 11/06/2009, -4/+19nobody ever gives mountain dew any love.
- Zaetha, on 11/06/2009, -3/+16Incidentally Coke is the greatest drug too.
- eadint, on 11/06/2009, -4/+15I almost wish that Apple would have bought SUN
Larry Elison is the biggest duche bag in the universe.
Imagine if Sun Ran the Enterprise servers and services and apple ran the desktops.
With apples GUI sun would become one of the greastes server companies around.
Apple has all but ceded the server market but sun could bring it back to life.
I have a bad feeling about oracle taking over SUN, SUN needs a Jobs right now, not a corprate weenie. - Zippo, on 11/06/2009, -2/+11Everything worked out well in the end. Apple bought NeXT; which brought Steve back into the fold and NeXTSTEP became the foundations for OS X.
And thus ended the awful John Sculley/Michael Spindler era. - Orbital101, on 11/06/2009, -2/+10The part where the article says "My guess is that it wasn't only that..." is precisely where it goes from being analytically strong to just the usual self-congratulatory Gizmodo blathering.
- TheCollective00, on 11/06/2009, -1/+8No soda is good unless its made with Pure Cane Sugar. ***** high fructose corn syrup!
- xM55, on 11/05/2009, -5/+11THIS IS Apple Inc!!!!!!!!!!
- cthellis, on 11/06/2009, -0/+6Yes, by all means. Products are never, ever updated and enhanced and improved and streamlined by others in significant ways that make it more useful and popular among the public, thus vastly increasing sales and application for the device. It is only, EVER the first person to come up with an idea that counts! Long live the Edison Phonograph Cylinder! ***** the heathen "record" and its pussy creators!
- cthellis, on 11/06/2009, -0/+5In the end, it turned out to be more like "NeXT purchased Apple for negative $430 million dollars." ;-)
- Elranzer, on 11/06/2009, -1/+6Give credit where credit's due...
Intel -> Intel corporation
OSX -> NeXTstep and FreeBSD
WebKit -> KDE / Konqueror (KHTML) - dcolley, on 11/06/2009, -5/+10The only thing recognizable about Microsoft is that all their products are junk.
- OptimismPrime, on 11/06/2009, -0/+5um....actually....it's digg.com
- bilbohicks, on 11/06/2009, -7/+11not sure Apple can take the credit for Intel.
- ohreilly, on 11/06/2009, -1/+5cthellis:
Nokia is still at 50% in terms of smartphone marketshare, RIM gained almost 6% and Apple got a massive 0.7%.
Who's the one vastly increasing sales?
Oh, and touchscreen phones existed way before Apple decided to make one. - cthellis, on 11/06/2009, -0/+3Wait... what? What is post revisionist about this particular anecdote?
- iwillrefuse, on 11/06/2009, -2/+5Post. Revisionist. *****.
(And that's exactly why Jobs is just that good.) - phogasmic, on 11/06/2009, -2/+5"based on design over functionality" You obviously have no clue about the design culture @ Apple. They believe Design is functionality you can't have good design without it. They don't get kudos cause their stuff looks better they get kudos because it works better.
- HonoredMule, on 11/06/2009, -0/+3The iPod was a minor evolutionary improvement on existing mp3 players and gained its success largely through marketing via iTunes. Once iPods gained popularity, iTunes turned to *****, and now the former carries the latter through proprietary lock-in...and that's just sloppy and lazy. Quality doesn't have to force itself upon you through bundling.
- philomatic, on 11/06/2009, -1/+3Err yes please give credit where credit is due:
Apple swapping to Intel based machines was huge. Not many companies have the guts and foresight to make those kinds of changes... Apple even maintained a secret Intel build of OSX years before swapping
OSX is more than just NeXT and FreeBSD. Even then, NeXT was Jobs's company and is now part of Apple...
Webkit is Apple's fork of KHTML. If KHTML is so great w/o Apple's work, why don't people use it instead of Webkit? - MastaQ, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2A helluva drug, in fact.
- phogasmic, on 11/06/2009, -1/+2It did didn't it.
- mochaman, on 11/07/2009, -1/+2The article doesn't give you any context, it assumes that you know all about Apple and rest is history. This was not a sure thing, at the end of 1996 Apple was shopping for a new operating system, after many years of failing and MS rulling the earth with Win95. Inside Apple there was a great debate, they had choice to make between Be OS or NeXT. Those who remember Be Os was an awesome OS, jobs had his work cut. This went on for months, Gil Amelio was sold when Jobs made the final pitch at the eleventh hour.
What is remarkable about his comeback is that in 1997 Apple was losing so much money, and in desperation to please investors sort like a hail mary, the board made a series of moves, needles to say that the old guard was fired including boar members. So with the help of one board member Fred Anderson Jobs was named to the board as a chairman and later as an interim ceo. I don't think it was a walk in the park but I'm sure some may disagree there were a lot things that needed to fold in place in order for him to take over the reigns of Apple. - Meocross, on 11/08/2009, -0/+1Apple + Sun? Jesus Christifur that would have surpassed Windows XP long ago.
- CaptObvious, on 11/06/2009, -1/+2MACTERNET?!
- cthellis, on 11/12/2009, -0/+1@ohreilly
Wish I'd wandered back here earlier. Your numbers, they are in need of some updating:
http://www.gartner.com/it/page.jsp?id=1224645
Where were they the year before? 48.7%
Where were they in Q3 2006? 75%
Yes, their lunch. It is being eaten. Not to mention WAYYY outprofited:
http://www.reuters.com/article/COMSRV/idUSN1051937 ... - miaow, on 11/06/2009, -3/+3Overly expensive products that are based on design over functionality. Microsoft are 'bad' but Apple are worse. How he managed to be the techies hero is beyond me.
- AmazingAndrex, on 11/06/2009, -1/+1Coke is the better cola, but the best overall soda is also a Coca-Cola product - Vault.
- Surkit, on 11/06/2009, -1/+1He didn't buy it because, "The vandals took the handles".
- datdamonfoo, on 11/06/2009, -2/+2He needed a few more years to come up with plans to completely, but subtly, ***** over consumers and introduce overly expensive products with limited functionality and market it as "high-end". Steve Jobs is a douche.
- aristotle0dude, on 11/06/2009, -2/+2@Elranzer and bilbohicks *Whoosh*
philomatic was talking about the smooth transition to Intel using the concept of the universal binary. - phogasmic, on 11/06/2009, -1/+1Credit to Apple for being able to spot awesome technology and use it in their products.
- phogasmic, on 11/06/2009, -2/+2@HonoredMule "minor evolutionary improvement on existing mp3 players and gained its success largely through marketing via iTunes"
It was hardly minor, do you even remember how MP3 players looked and worked back then. They were either huge with a lot of HD space or small with very little space. Apple built a smallish player with a huge amount of space for the time and improved the speed of transferring songs by using Firewire instead of USB 1.0. It may seem minor and obvious now but at the time it was awesome. Plus it was a bold move no one thought the IPod would succeed like it did, MP3 players weren't even that popular back then. - Wilddigi, on 11/06/2009, -4/+2Steve Jobs drank alot of water, didn't help him. It money did
- Kuntfeatures, on 11/06/2009, -5/+2Steve Jobs is on the cutting edge of innovation and *****! http://digg.com/d317gIK Check it!
- Orbital101, on 11/06/2009, -3/+0OMG COKE FANBOY!!!!
- ohreilly, on 11/06/2009, -10/+3"iPod
iPhone"
Two products that other people were making (mp3 players and smartphones, before some smartarse asks when Creative made iPods) before Apple did it?
With the latter, a definite case of "let's make a product that is vastly inferior to everyone else's stuff but price it so that it's 2x as much - people will buy it because of our superior marketing machine" - QQQQUUUU, on 11/06/2009, -14/+3I think Steve is a very unstable individual
