- InitialDMP5, on 10/10/2007, -5/+45I'm pretty sure you have to pay for TMobiles WiFi hotspots with their phones that have WiFi. Its not some big scam that only at&t is doing. If I remember, TMob charges an extra 9 dollars a month for access to their hotspots.
And even if at&t did include it, Barnes would still want to charge something. Otherwise people would just be in there using the connection.... - jollyholly, on 10/10/2007, -1/+26When Apple announced the iPhone in the UK, O2 said that iPhone users would get access to a full network of wifi hotspots within the UK. It is strange that AT&T has not offered something similar..
- Highway61, on 10/10/2007, -2/+20I have run into that as well. I think that it was at Barnes & Noble. The AT&T WIFI has unrelated to it's cell phone business from what I can gather.
- plizard, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16oh you mean like free wifi at coffee shops?
- fluidfoundation, on 10/10/2007, -4/+15its probably for the same reason they hide their cheap DSL offer.
- Tenlow, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11Interestingly enough, the AT&T ad on the side of this page right now says if you pay for their business class DSL you get access to those hotspots for free.
- colin409, on 10/10/2007, -9/+16Gotta love AT&T
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6i think your head is cracked.
- Genma, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6stupid blog question of the day - "why does at&t want to make as much money as possible from me???"
- Bootes, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8That is because O2 doesn't have a very large Edge network.
- mccarron, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7If you have AT&T DSL then you get free AT&T Wifi Service. Not free with iPhone unfortunately.
- dcharti, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Because AT&T wireless customers have never been given free access to their WiFi service. The iPhone isn't the first AT&T Wireless/Cingular phone to do WiFi—should all the other WiFi-enabled phones get free access to the service as well?
Purchasing one product or service from a company does not necessitate you get their other services for free. - CLShortFuse, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6and how many years ago was that? now they charge $19.99 monthly with a required voiceplan
http://hotspot.t-mobile.com/services_plans.htm - Bdog2g2, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6What's the point of having it when you can't use it.
"And as an AT&T customer, we provide you with a variety of WiFI hot spots. Notice we said provide, that does not mean you can use them." - runeasgar, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Because then AT&T couldn't charge you extra for it. It's all about making money..
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -5/+9Somehow this will be turned into Apple's fault
- AxeSwinger, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Yeah, but at&t does give it away to it's dsl subscribers or they used to allow you to connect for 1.99/month. If you're paying for unlimited data access on your phone it would be nice for the same on the wireless side of the house.
- yujie, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Disconnect by AT&T in 5..4..3..2..
- dragon76, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I got free WiFi with my data plan when I had T-Mobile.
- Devin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I have a T-Mobile Dash and their $20 unlimited internet add-on, pretty much required for smartphones unless you want to stick to T-Zones, includes access to every T-Mobile Hotspot in the country. The phone even has an app that logs you in automatically when it detects a Hotspot. But even better is I can log into that Hotspot account using my computer if I just enter in my phone number and password at the login page.
- XStatic, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4AT&T WiFi is free with AT&T DSL
http://www.att.com/gen/general?pid=5949
Still a lot of regulations that don't allow the wireline business to work with the wireless side, these are finally starting to breakdown with the latest mergers. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4if they had 3G they would have too. enjoy your 1997 technology.
- breckinshire, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3It's not that great of a deal. Someone already mentioned that T-Mobile has a $20 EDGE plan that also gives unlimited hotspot access. If they can do it, why not AT&T?
- cgruber, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Unless you work for a massive corporation you probably don't understand but often in said corporations different divisions pretty much act as completely separate entities.
AT&T wireless is probably almost as far away from AT&T DSL as it is from Comcast for example. - bobnease, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Good point...
- bobnease, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3true... $9 extra isn't a bad deal. I guess what makes me think of this is O2's deal to open all those hot spots with the UK's Cloud service. It'd just be nice if we had something like that available to us here. I guess you can't have it all though, right?:-)
- yoshitx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Why cant I have ATT&T transatlantic fiber service with my iPhone subscription?
- lohphat, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Because you didn't read the terms of service to see what your plan entitles you to? If you want access to that feature, then pay for it.
- SteveMax, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I'm not sure what's worse: your spelling/grammar, "CDMA crack" (!!!!), or the spam.
- totorototoro, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Yeah, that is a pretty sweet deal over there. Even their iPod Touch wifi subscription seems really reasonable pricewise for access to the Cloud.
- Yez70, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3T-mobile runs 'sales' all the time - if you watch for them. I remember the free wi-fi included promo they had last year, I think. I recently was able to switch my 600min unlimited nights/wknds for $39.99 to a 1000minute unlimited nights/wknds plan for $39.99. 400 extra minutes a month free. It was their July monthly promotion. I think in August or September, they had a 2 lines for $49.99 deal going. I think the 1000minute for $39.99 plan now doesn't include nights/wknds - but I 'upgraded' during the sale so I got the unlimited free nights/wknds.
As far as I now, no other US carrier runs these types of 'sales' with fluctuating pricing. - statikuz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I don't have AT&T Wireless, but I do have home phone/DSL through AT&T and I tried signing onto the wireless network in the Denver airport with my DSL username/password and it seemed more than happy to let me on, if you have their "Pro" or "Elite" class DSL you get free access.
- jschuur, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I think it's a higher level class. I have the 3 mbit package with 5 static IPs ($70/month) and they gave me free access when they I called them.
- trouble916, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I've heard it's just certain classes of home DSL (Pro, Elite, Xtreme?)... would love to hear experience otherwise... try it and let us know!
It's a nice perk. Wish I could get AT&T DSL where I live to go with my iPhone. - jdwaters, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1my experience... as a general rule, if it doesn't say FREE Wi-Fi.... it isn't.
- crash331, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1AT&T has 3g. My Blackjack is fast as hell. I have a feeling they wanted to cripple the iPhone because it would eat through data VERY fast.
- CLShortFuse, on 10/10/2007, -6/+7I love how people target AT&T when none of the major cell phone providers in the US give you free WiFi
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1why is it ridiculous to be seen as a revenue stream?
- codyfrisch, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I have a t-Mobile phone, uses the hotspot@home service to make calls, and THAT part of their wifi is free if you have thier hotspot at home service which gives you unlimited minutes over wifi.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I have had this discussion 2 yrs ago with a friend of mine. Why can't cell phone a carrier offer me free WiFI from the same company? Well 2 yrs ago WiFi phones were basically non-existent. If you were to access AT&T WiFi you basically had a laptop to do it instead which is not a phone. AT&T knew this and so did you the laptop user. Since the release of the iPhone, the push for WiFi was grown because it can put the common user in touch with a phone that has built in WiFi. (and with the ipod touch a media player has wifi as well). AT&T never really had to address a customer need for it and still continues to not address it. It is until it is absolutely obvious and in the interest of AT&T will they allow WiFi phones to access AT&T WiFi hotspots free of charge.
- monospaced, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2And if I remember correctly, AT&T or Apple iTunes is teaming up with Starbucks so that when you walk into their stores with an iPhone, the Starbucks logo appears and you can purchase their store music from the iTunes Store.
- Yankees368, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I have a Sprint Mogul and also am not able to use Sprint wi-fi where ever it is actually available. But here is a workaround for me:
Just use the Mogul as a modem for my laptop and cruise the internet at 1 mbps down - TheIguana, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2*sarcasm* Giving out free wifi could result in the complete failure of AT&T's western network... Kind of like third party applications.
- mrurc, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3I have tried to jump through T-Mobile's hoops to get a discount at a T-Mobile Hot Spot but eventually I got to a page that said that I have to pay the same as everyone else even though I have the plan named "Unlimited data plan." Unlimited data doesn't include SMS either. I get ten/month.
- rockets, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Did Steve tell you that you could do that? No? Then shut up and keep listening to the iPod.
- bobnease, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Anybody figured out a way to do this with the iPhone (hacked or unhacked)???
- bobnease, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Amen to that!
- bobnease, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Barnes & Noble... not sure where else...
- tyme, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I'm going to go with: because it's an added service that you have to pay for, and don't get for free, since, you know, it costs them money to set up and maintain the hot spots (you're current contract only pays for them to setup and maintain the wireless cell network - that's the contract you signed, right?). That was so hard to figure out, I had to rack my brain for a whole 2 1/2 seconds.
- dragon76, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Panera Bread has the nation's largest free WiFi system. I don't see a ton of people hanging out there all day. It used to be that free WiFi was a way that business differentiated themselves and was a perk. Now it's seen as a revenue stream which is ridiculous but if people will pay $2 for bottled tap water, I guess they'll buy anything.
