- Patogrande, on 10/20/2008, -8/+62Because people are idiots who lack the self restraint to refrain from buying a new iPod every six months?
- GeorgeStone2, on 10/20/2008, -7/+43WRONG! Trick question. The answer was because apple overpriced their products so much, they can take a 50% hit and still make a profit.
- michaelpinto, on 10/20/2008, -7/+28Actually the iPod itself was born during the last dot.com crash - and Apple itself is a child of the low budget 70s.
- gospe1337, on 10/20/2008, -1/+19Opinion articles are awesome, factual, and give 50% of your daily needed Vitamins C, D, F, and Q.
- inactive, on 10/20/2008, -2/+14i don't know. dropping from 200 to 85 in one year doesn't seem stable to me homie.
not to mention the fact that Ipods and mp3s in general are pretty much a hot commodity of the past. - marshallpeck, on 10/20/2008, -2/+13You people
- bjornski, on 10/20/2008, -2/+11We have a winner.
- thiefjack, on 10/20/2008, -1/+9What do you mean "you people?"
- wukillabee, on 10/20/2008, -7/+15nice spin apple fanboys, the price of the stock has been cut in half in the last 2 months
buried for apple fanboy site + fud - polalion, on 10/20/2008, -1/+8What do YOU mean "you people"?
- jmpeagle, on 10/20/2008, -1/+8it has a P/E ratio 50% higher than the index for the standard and poors 500, just because it's stock price has fallen, doesn't mean people think the company is going to collapse. It still has a really high growth rate in profits priced in, they just aren't as ridiculously high as before.

SPX - P/E 11.95 - scabbers, on 10/20/2008, -2/+9Don't forget that while those dirt cheap stocks will rise, that's only if the company doesn't go BUST!
- xanadu2113, on 10/20/2008, -4/+10if i wasnt a student and i had money, i'd buy all kinds of stocks right now, they're so cheap.
but, perhaps my opinion would be different if i had money and just lost a lot like everyone else - Unzorn, on 10/20/2008, -0/+6Don't forget the vitamins B and S
- Giga, on 10/20/2008, -2/+8If Apple dies the fanboys will still be around. Case in point: rabid fans of the Firefly TV series.
- scabbers, on 10/20/2008, -1/+7"temporary dip in the economy"
LOL spin on this {o_O} ,,|, - dvsbastard, on 10/20/2008, -7/+12This article seems more like an optimistic fanboy rant, rather than sound financial advice...
- Billions, on 10/20/2008, -1/+6...and you're omitting the rest of the data: Nearly ALL companies dipped hard in the last few weeks.
- itsbob, on 10/20/2008, -1/+6Boy, you really like that term fanboy don't you?
What do you call all the people that bash linux and Mac users, accusing anyone that uses anything other than Windows of being fanboys and homosexuals?
I think there must be a more medical term for them. - freediverx, on 10/20/2008, -3/+8Macs do not cost more than competitors. In many cases they cost considerably less than comparably equipped machines (look at Sony.) The difference is that Apple does not make garbage, and naturally cannot compete purely on price with garbage produced by companies like Dell and HP.
Additionally, numerous studies have demonstrated that macs have a lower total cost of ownership than PCs, due to their greater reliability, lower support costs, and higher resale value. - shhawkins, on 10/20/2008, -1/+6I used to work in Apple Retail selling macs. Apple Care is how they kept track of our job performance. How many units of Apple Care could we sell against our total mac sales. So to keep my job I ***** some customers saying, "Oh yes, you're mac will probably break down, but it won't matter if you have Apple Care, I'm tellin' ya."
Me personally, I have a macbook, never bought Apple Care, and have had it two years, no problems. I like Apple products, but their sales pitch can be a bit off. - spikes, on 10/20/2008, -0/+5If AAPL stock was held by actual users of Apple products instead of just big corporate scavenger investors looking for an extra buck, none of this short sighted selling would be happening. Every Apple fan knows they'll not eat for a month just so they can have the latest Apple gear. In other words, I don't see Apple sales slowing anytime soon, recession or not.
- freediverx, on 10/20/2008, -4/+8The people who dropped the price to 85 are the same idiots who lost tons of money by investing in mortgage backed securities. When will people learn that the "market" does not always know best. The market is a mob of greedy, short-sighted idiots.
In any case, Apple is back up above the $100 mark, and still outperforming the market as they always have.
By the way, concerning hot commodities, ever hear of something called the iPhone? Look it up. Also, Macs (and especially Mac laptops) are rapidly growing in market share despite their high prices compared to crappy Dells - especially among college students, who aren't exactly known for having a lot of cash to throw around... - freediverx, on 10/20/2008, -4/+8And yet still outperforming the market, and especially outperforming the likes of Dell and Microsoft.
- ieee, on 10/20/2008, -0/+4During the Great Depression Hollywood flourished. Even though people didn't know where their next meal was coming from they would pay to go to the movies when the could to forget about life for a while.
Back then getting into the movies was a pittance and lasted all day.
Computers have become entertainment and communication devices.
If Apple keeps their prices down people will still be motivated to buy them despite tougher times. - SuperSunny, on 10/20/2008, -2/+5Generally, the products last and are built well. It's more of the fact that if a problem DOES occur, it is blown out of proportion and hit in head-line news because Apple is supposed to be known for making quality products.
Honestly, it's not bad. The majority of Mac-owners I know don't have a single problem. Haven't had any for years. - FredFredrickson, on 10/20/2008, -4/+7Too late - they already got crushed by the recession. Their stock is worth half the value it used to be.
- wukillabee, on 10/20/2008, -5/+8MS stock was at $28 2 months ago, its now at $24
you sir, are a misinformed apple fanboy - SamurAchzar, on 10/20/2008, -0/+3Thanks scabbers, you've given me new tools to express myself without resorting to the full-on Pedobear. Dugg
{o_O} ,,|, - iamthearm, on 10/20/2008, -0/+3Microsoft's won't either.
- Khast, on 10/20/2008, -0/+3What? No applesauce? /sarcasm
Really, I hope when we pull out of this recession, I hope Apple and Microsoft are both doing well. It's the competition in the computer world which helps keep things in check. And the innovations in the software from both companies is what drives the hardware companies. - gojason, on 10/20/2008, -2/+5What does the dot com bubble burst have to do with the iPod or the Apple of the '70s to the Apple of today. If anything, it was the launch of the iTunes store that was a rare dot com business success following the crash. Also, aside from humble bedroom/garage beginnings, there was nothing low-budget about Apple computers in the '70s. Price wise that is. Some of their systems were pretty low-budget build-wise back then (ex. Apple III).
- jb12321, on 10/20/2008, -3/+6Quality? I don't own any Apple products but I see countless news headlines about Apples poor quality. I can think of examples of overheating iMacs, casing discolouration on the iBooks, the inverse black screen problem I think the touches had, iPhone 3G reception. There has been many many more. I build my own PC out of cheap but brand name parts, they last far longer than I ever need them for (3+ years powered 24/7). I've always owned Nokia cell phones, never had reception issues and I've not had a single one die on me.
I'm not trying to bag Apple for the sake of bagging Apple, I just don't see how they get renowned for their quality, unless people figure price = quality and don't really think about it. - r3zonance, on 10/20/2008, -1/+4"After fooling so many people into buying a free OS (Darwin)"
You do realise that Apple are responsible for Darwin in the first place, right?
Also of note, Darwin "is composed of code developed by Apple, as well as code derived from NEXTSTEP, FreeBSD, and other free software projects."
Note that NextSTEP wasn't a free product. There is way more to Mac OS X than the tiny FreeBSD part of it. - Billions, on 10/20/2008, -1/+3Hmm. Work on that one a little
- ucuntu, on 10/20/2008, -1/+3I dropped my MacBook down a flight of stairs on Saturday night.
Still works perfectly.
Although at work we bought Dell M1330s and we've had lcd units, motherboards, disks fail on those.
Swings and roundabouts really.. - spoonchucks, on 10/21/2008, -0/+2Juice by Patogrande! Juice by Patogrande! Gooooooooo Patogrande!
- MacParrot, on 10/20/2008, -3/+5And yet they have still been immensely profitable. Yeah sounds like a company going down the toilet. Any chance you can wait until the next quarter before starting the Apple deathwatch...AGAIN.
- marshallpeck, on 10/20/2008, -1/+3Why not "Why closed source projects will fail" or why "Free will succeed in a hurting economy"... bla bla bla and all that.
- Elranzer, on 10/20/2008, -0/+2"Because people are idiots..."
The rest is redundant. - Seidoger, on 10/20/2008, -1/+3Maybe not crushed, but seriously hit no doubt.
- FredFredrickson, on 10/20/2008, -2/+4The only reason why it's growing right now is because people keep thinking it's hit its lowest point, and they want to jump on board because they think it's going to shoot all the way back up. These people may be referred to as "idiots."
- jmpeagle, on 10/20/2008, -0/+2i think you responded to the wrong person because I never said their stock is going up and AAPL is currently still in free fall mode on NASDAQ. There is no evidence that it has bottomed out. All I said, was that even after the fall it still has a much higher than stock market average P/E ratio.
- bjornski, on 10/20/2008, -1/+3And if you bought $23,000 worth of Apple stock last year, how much would you have right now?
Enough to pay back the loan and your student loans? - rath01, on 10/20/2008, -2/+4Hey, nice article FANBOY.. I mean.. INVESTOR
- skidooer, on 10/20/2008, -0/+2He said an iPhone does what most people buy laptops for. The fact that laptops can do more is irrelevant if you never take advantage of that fact.
- Billions, on 10/20/2008, -1/+3jeez, guy, at least make it CLEVER
- arleym, on 10/20/2008, -0/+2What's with the comments on that page? ...maybe I should say this a thousand times...
- KurtangleTN, on 10/20/2008, -0/+2The thing going against Apple is switchers haven't really used OS X. So when one goes and maybe has their eyes on a Dell laptop for $800 and they see it has similar specs to the Macbook for $1300 then they aren't going to be able to spend a $500+ premium for it.
I can't believe Apple actually did that.. who the hell ups their prices on notebooks and keeps them further away from the average potential buyer during a recession. - warragul, on 10/20/2008, -0/+2The Government Dept of Trade people gave us a talk a few years ago. They said that two classes of manufacturers survived the downturns.
They were those producing the highest quality products and those producing the lowest priced products. Not the lowest margin, lowest price. -
