- dansy, on 03/10/2008, -79/+152The most 'revolutionary' thing about Apple is how ity managed to convince mactards that something like the iPhone SDK is 'open' and 'free' ...
- NuclearBunny, on 03/10/2008, -29/+75"This powerful platform that Apple uses to create beautiful applications for MacOS and iPhone is now COMPLETELY OPEN. "
Excuse me? You must be using some alternate reality defintion of the word OPEN. - ani625, on 03/10/2008, -42/+88[Custom Apple fanboy Quote]
- Tyrghast, on 03/10/2008, -14/+55The title alone is cause for much laughter.
- geekchic, on 03/10/2008, -15/+46I fail to see why the SDK itself is revolutionary when all you seem to be talking about is a marketing deal, which is nothing to do with the SDK itself.
Nokia has long offered a software shop of its own which was open to developers - whilst also allowing those developers to reach out via deals with the likes of Handango etc.
Apple has taken a step backwards in the move towards open platforms and the greater sharing of software and services. - mdman, on 03/10/2008, -21/+47I see, all the software out there runs on Apple now?
I think not. I dont see any domnation here...
just another apple fan boy - EXreaction, on 03/10/2008, -13/+39Cut the price a few hundred dollars and tell AT&T to go screw themselves and then I'll think about it.
- inactive, on 03/10/2008, -12/+34I saw the exact same title in the 80's. They still have a 5% market share.
- Kasot, on 03/10/2008, -25/+45Wait, what about Linux?
- jakem1, on 03/10/2008, -9/+29All Apple have done is ensure that they profit from your work every time you sell an application.
- InnerBlueAbyss, on 03/10/2008, -25/+45haha wow you apple fanboys are diluted
- zachlac, on 03/10/2008, -3/+19Wait...this article is titled "Why Apple Will Dominate Next Generation Computing", and it only really mentions the iPhone? Last time I checked, the iPhone is a MINISCULE, if not TOTALLY MINUTE percentage of "Computing". Embedded systems, the vast majority of home PC's, pretty much every server out there...
Buried for a crappy title. - chris9902, on 03/10/2008, -10/+26Good luck with that. I'll be over here in the real world.
- Shawn4168, on 03/10/2008, -27/+42Looking pretty != Dominating
- jasarien, on 03/10/2008, -13/+28The SDK is Open and Free. It may not be open like Open Source - no-one's claiming it's Open Source. By open, people refer to the fact that the frameworks are no longer kept private within Apple and are now available for developers to put to use. The SDK is free, I have it on my system. I paid nothing. Distributing your applications however is not free. Either way you go about it, be it App Store or your own distribution method, you will be paying for something, whether its hosting, or credit card processing. That's what Apple are charging you for. Not to mention that it's only a one time payment. You pay your fee, you can distribute free apps until you turn blue.
- hamobu, on 03/10/2008, -14/+28Apple will appeal to cost oriented business because of their innovative new advertising campaign featuring guys in turtlenecks dancing in front of a white background.
- prKsh, on 03/10/2008, -37/+51Apple will never dominate even the current generation computing. How it can dominate next-gen?
OS X "officially" runs only on apple's products... Linux runs on everything from watch to supercomputers. iPhone SDK does not work even on apple's own Tiger. Apple is becoming more evil than microsoft.
Linux Will Dominate Next Generation Computing - http://www.linuxdevices.com
If Android is released with promised features, I will burn my iPhone for sure - solidsnake1298, on 03/10/2008, -1/+15You missed the point. He is saying that many, if not a majority, of Apple fans have a tendency to eat up everything Jobs says as if it were handed down from God, himself, and is accepted as fact when, in reality, it is a stretch at best.
- j2002, on 03/10/2008, -7/+20Shouln't that be "Why Apple will dominate the next generation of iphones" - The thing everyone seems to forget is that apple couln't care less about dominating anything - because then they'd have to appeal to the mainstream and lower their prices and that not going to happen, they have a good business making toys for people with more money than sence and thats the way it'll stay.
- adamclif, on 03/10/2008, -11/+22Apple snobs cling to these articles like moths to street lamps
- form3hide, on 03/10/2008, -4/+15good comment... 'loser'.... obviously best of digg right here
- rudy23, on 03/10/2008, -3/+14I must say that considering the different way to interact with the iPhone the SDK is going to bring in a whole wealth of applications to the iPhone which will be difficult to emulate.
What takes it a step further though is the fact that even enterprises may start adopting some to be deployed internally. - pathy, on 03/10/2008, -6/+16Why are we calling mobile phones Next Generation Computing?
- TomK88, on 03/10/2008, -2/+12What does Microsoft have to do with anything? There are still countless mobile providers who are lightyears ahead of iPhone in terms of marketshare.
- Diganta, on 03/10/2008, -4/+14Google Android. That being said I'm waiting for the 3G iPhone and then slapping on SSH and a bunch of other nifty apps. Saying good bye to my Treo 650 and Verizon (prior to that I was a Treo 180 owner with T-Mobile).
- deaftly, on 03/10/2008, -41/+50Yea because Apple prices all their products so reasonable.
- pzarker, on 03/10/2008, -6/+15so you think that the beatnik demographic makes up over 25% of the US smart phone market? i guess i underestimated the population of the "beatnik demographic"
- BlackJackJester, on 03/10/2008, -3/+12With the introduction of third party software, comes the introduction to OS crashes, memory leaks, and equivalent BSOD's. Enjoy them :D
- jasarien, on 03/10/2008, -0/+8Syntax error: CustomRetardedCommentInsteadOfAddingAnythingOfValue not defined. First use in this function.
- MikeSD34, on 03/10/2008, -2/+10Considering the percentage of the human body that is made up of water, you're probably correct.
- jaxter2010, on 06/17/2009, -7/+15Even as an apple user, I am getting tired of these articles.
- BlackStrain, on 03/10/2008, -1/+8You keep using that word. I don't think it means what you think it means.
- whyufail, on 03/10/2008, -1/+8People thought $599 was bad? Wait until Apple gets their hands on a console. lol
- jakem1, on 03/10/2008, -15/+22If the platform is so powerful, why can it only run one third-party application at a time?
- zmigliozzi, on 03/10/2008, -2/+9Since when does releasing a SDK mean they will dominate the next generation of computing?
- kelly, on 03/10/2008, -2/+8Actually, they have 7.5% now... And that's 7.5% of a MUCH larger pie.
- davidrools, on 03/10/2008, -9/+15inaccurate title. sorry.
- DanBoodro, on 03/10/2008, -9/+15I completely agree with you. The iPhone SDK is not "open and free". If you want the SDK be prepared to dish out $99, if you don't have an iPhone, be prepared for $399 - $499, if you don't have a Mac to use the SDK, be prepared to toss another $600 - $35,000 out the window. If you're broke, you might wanna look at OpenMoko, which offers you much more as a developer than the iPhone.
Don't get me wrong I have an iPhone myself and I'd love to make some killer games for this thing, but there aint nothing "open and free" about it. - inkyblue2, on 03/10/2008, -2/+8i have to buy the hardware from apple
i have to buy the documentation from apple
i can't read the source code
i can't modify, extend, or contribute to the framework
anything i write using it will only work on apple hardware running an apple OS
if i want to make money off of my work, i have to give apple 30% of whatever i make
anything i write using it is only functional and distributable by the whim of apple; they can render my work worthless whenever they feel like it
sounds about as open as a gimp mask and a chastity belt. - colincornaby, on 03/10/2008, -4/+10It would be revolutionary if Apple's terms of use were a little more open (i.e. let programs exchange files and let people use scripting languages) and if Apple let us run programs in the background like other platforms (Blackberry, Palm OS, Windows Mobile..) I mean, I'm a Mac developer, and it's going to be great to write programs for the iPhone, but there are several issues that need to be fixed. Until then, an entire class of programs (like scrobbler software) just won't show up for the iPhone.
- warcin, on 03/10/2008, -5/+11Apple has always been more evil than Microsoft. Microsoft is just more competent at it.
- Mikey9oo, on 03/10/2008, -7/+13I am happy Apple stays in a niche. It allows them to be successful at what they do. If Apple offered cheap stuff, their reputation would go down.
- marksism, on 03/10/2008, -3/+9Given how fast Apple and now Linux distros are making headway vs. industry leader Microsoft, which by the way remains very strong, why must one company dominate the next generation? Wouldn't it end up being better for all if there was just a little more competition among whats out there without having one player so strongly box out the others? That seems like it would be the best outcome.
- Izacus, on 03/10/2008, -4/+10Ehm... Microsoft's XNA for 360 did it before that.
- insllvn, on 03/10/2008, -6/+12For the same reason we keep getting stories about how "revolutionary" and "open" Apple's newest ***** is on the front page. Some people really like it and they want to share their passion. It is OK.
- zmigliozzi, on 03/10/2008, -1/+7Microsoft just has that 90%+ market share.
- subliminalurge, on 03/10/2008, -0/+6This may come as a shock to you, but there are very large numbers of computer owners who never even install a game on their machines.
Gaming rigs == Niche market. - colincornaby, on 03/10/2008, -0/+6Power as in hardware? My Mac is a 8 core 2.8 ghz Machine with a GeForce 8800, and it was cheaper than a Dell with the same specs. Power as in software? Macs run UNIX, you know, the same software that powers the internet. I don't think Apple's biggest problem is in it's software. It's in the lack of attention in general it's given to pushing Macs in the enterprise. At least Thursday's keynote signals they might be willing to change that.
- BinaryFragger, on 03/10/2008, -0/+6Introducing the Apple Pippin II: two controller ports, no DVD playback, no online gameplay, but much thinner than the PS3 and Xbox360. Starting at only $1500. Integrated harddrive is an extra $250.
- incandescent, on 03/10/2008, -1/+7I love my iPhone but this sucks. Apple is just attempting to build another monopoly. I should be able to distribute my applications any way I see fit, just like on every other platform. Apple makes great technology, but it treats its customers like crap.
