Somehow, they always get it wrong. - inactive, on 11/25/2007, -8/+143What pundits don't understand is that success in business is all about taking risks. They were looking at the failures of such companies as Gateway and just going with the law of probability. And it's very easy for pundits to continually predict Apple to fail because there is this big lie that Apple succeeds because of a dedicated minority of fanatical followers. So the innovation and design that goes into Apple products, the attention to detail in software and usability get glossed over very quickly.
Most companies look at a cell phone and say to themselves, it's just a device that make calls. What list of features do I have to throw on these things to make the most profit? Steve Jobs looks a cell phone and goes, everyone has a cell phone. People don't leave the house without a cell phone, so they obviously have an emotional connection to their cell phone. How can we make them love their phone? I think that type of reasoning is what separates Apple from other technology companies. They went into their retail stores with the same attitude. - Quix, on 11/25/2007, -15/+115"Maybe it's time Steve Jobs stopped thinking quite so differently." Heh. Armchair quarterbacking fails again.
If the success of the Apple Stores keeps on its upward trajectory, is there any doubt Microsoft will be rolling out its "Me2" retail stores in the near future? I can't wait. Think different indeed. - inactive, on 11/25/2007, -4/+96Notice to all of you who didn't read the story. This article was written in May, 2001. The whole point is, their prediction couldn't have been more wrong.
- clark24, on 11/25/2007, -3/+70I always see hordes of people in every Apple I pass.. regardless of the foot traffic in the surrounding area. Can't be doing that bad.
- MrSlumberjack, on 11/25/2007, -3/+45Nonsense. How many pics make the top 10 every day?
Oh, and your face is a news site. - tizz66, on 11/25/2007, -3/+37Apple is a hardware company, Microsoft isn't (apart from the odd item). I don't think MS would have much to gain from a store, just like Adobe wouldn't. Hardware is a completely different game.
Now watch 2013 come along and prove me wrong. - Damian91, on 11/25/2007, -2/+34I actually like the stores, they're interactive for both children and adults and the employees seem to have a good grasp of knowledge of the products. The smell is also quite calming, it feels like you're in a giant Mac.
Copyright © 2007 Apple Inc. All rights reserved. - MrSlumberjack, on 11/25/2007, -3/+34They seem to be working phenomenally.
- aeiou, on 11/25/2007, -1/+32You forgot the switch to intel
- mateo60, on 11/25/2007, -2/+33I recall thinking it wouldn't work and my argument had to do with the fact that the Gateway stores were doing so poorly. I also remember thinking the iPod, which I thought was an amazing product, would also fail due to it's high price.
I'm happy I was wrong on both accounts. - HisShadow, on 11/25/2007, -3/+31"This article really isn't wrong."
HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!
The Apple stores sell more product per square foot than almost any store in the USA. The stores are an off the charts success. Apple didn't need to partner with anyone, and the "market share" argument never held much water in the first place, and now that Apple makes all basic software and advanced software to make the Mac productive, the market share argument means even less. - thebellmaster1x, on 11/25/2007, -8/+36Mmm, I don't think Microsoft is going to have Microsoft sales anytime soon. Thing is, Apple is the only real Apple retailer. But you can get Microsoft products from many different sources. I just don't believe that Microsoft is going to see fit to channel all of their products into one chain.
- kpxxbladexx415, on 11/25/2007, -5/+32Apple stores have worked because they are a place for me to waste time while I'm downtown. Thank you apple.
- elrac, on 11/25/2007, -2/+28you can drag to the trash, or you can right click and select "move to trash", or you can hit command-delete, or you can select the icon and hit the delete icon in the toolbar, or you can go in through the terminal and type "rm ", or you can select the file and use file-"move to trash"....
- freudianslipper, on 11/25/2007, -0/+24""Apple's problem is it still believes the way to grow is serving caviar in a world that seems pretty content with cheese and crackers," gripes former Chief Financial Officer Joseph Graziano."
I don't see wanting to release the best product you can being a problem. In fact, that "problem" is why I switched to a Mac. - EvaMonkey01, on 11/25/2007, -3/+21And it's always fun to see their remarks thrown back in their faces.
- awfulgrace, on 11/25/2007, -1/+19clano - have you ever even used a mac? You're statement is just not true... there are many ways to delete a file. I use command+delete
- danlevinenyc, on 11/25/2007, -10/+27This is a very interesting article. The iPod definitely helped Apple tremendously. I also feel the Intel chips have been like a spring board for apple.
For those of you who don't presently have an Apple product, I'm sorry. I can understand it would look that there are many fans / followers that wear the tight t-shirts, etc.. but that doesn't just deal with Marketing.
Apple makes a far superior product (Even to Microsoft). They are like the Mercedes of computers. Now Microsoft does make very good products as well, Their operating system not being one of them.
Any seasoned computer tech who has used both systems extensively would say that they both have their benefits, but OSX is leaps and bounds ahead of XP and especially Vista.
The XP to Vista switch is the equivalent of OS9 to OSX which happened for apple many years ago. BSD has been around for ever (the kernel of OSX) and it is just inherently more stable. - bitspace, on 11/25/2007, -2/+19You are a rare breed indeed - to admit being wrong, and even more to acknowledge the learning experience from it. My peers and friends have always been baffled when I've told them "I love being wrong." It's not natural, it's against human nature, but if I've been wrong and acknowledge and recognise it, then that means that I've learned something, and therefore am better for it.
- rohcky, on 11/25/2007, -0/+17Failed predictions make for great reading.
- regexp, on 11/25/2007, -1/+18I was in London last year and I walked into the Sony store and the Apple store (a week or so before it "opened"). The Sony store was empty - the Apple store was packed. I bought Apple stock the next day. Regardless what the hatebois and the fanbois say - Apple has learned to execute properly after years of screwing it up (basically inventing the laptop market and failed to capitalized on it). Contrast that with Nintendo WII who can't keep up with demand even after a year or Motorola who completely destroyed a great product by lack of innovation (razr) or gateway with their awful stores. Apple will eventually stumble but I have a feeling its going to be a while till they do.
- codyman, on 11/25/2007, -1/+17Probably because people were more focuses on the Best Buy deals...
Did you stop by an Apple Store on black friday? cause you couldn't even walk through the one near me... at 5am... - thebellmaster1x, on 11/25/2007, -6/+20God, how many times do I have to say this?
PCs, Macs, and Linux computers all have their own advantages. Quit being a little bitch and just accept that maybe somebody sees a reason they don't want to use the computer you do. Stop arguing. - thebellmaster1x, on 11/25/2007, -1/+15Er, wait, I meant "Microsoft STORES," not "Microsoft sales." Whoops. Guess that's why I got so many diggs in an Apple article.
- HisShadow, on 11/25/2007, -2/+15Pathetic. Buy into the myth, lagrange. Don't think for yourself. Repeat the lie ad nauseum. That's a good little robot.
- wicked82, on 11/25/2007, -1/+14saxonx- tell me what other computer store you can just walk right into and get service right away? heck im not even a mac user but that just sounds stupid that you would think you could just walk in and get service that instant. My dell broke the other day and is still in warranty i sure as hell wish i could walk into a dell store and have someone fix it and not have to go thru the geek squad or the like. But i guess since im defending apple i am now a "fanboy"
- Firehed, on 11/25/2007, -5/+17I absolutely see the truth in your statement - so I find it a bit amusing that Microsoft's hardware is the only stuff they sell worth buying; likewise for Apple's software.
- freakk123, on 11/25/2007, -1/+12What the ***** is the IPOD?
- childprey, on 11/25/2007, -3/+14I'm making a note here, "HUGE SUCCESS"
- xtc46, on 11/25/2007, -1/+12thats becasue most black Friday shoppers are out looking for dirt cheap bargains, not good computers. They don't care about quality when its 300 dollars.
- Spuy767, on 11/25/2007, -0/+11Apple's retail stores sell around 4 grand per square foot. Not even Tiffany & Company comes even close to that. They haul in around 2500.
- Macskeeball, on 11/25/2007, -2/+12Wow. Those must be some tiny people.
- Spuy767, on 11/25/2007, -0/+10Don't you people get it? No ONE thing saved Apple. The entire ecosystem that Apple created for itself is what brought Apple back. The iPod was the first genuine attention-getter, sure, but the combination of the iPod, OS X, the Apple Store, and drop dead gorgeous hardware have all worked in Apple's favor.
- soopafly, on 11/25/2007, -1/+11That was retarded
- NYCTulanian, on 11/25/2007, -3/+13best buy sucks
- wyatt23, on 11/25/2007, -0/+9priceless. make your words soft and tender. for one day you may have to eat them.
- padfoot, on 11/25/2007, -0/+9Huh? Were you trying to correct the title?
Because the title is correct and you are not. - noahhoward, on 11/25/2007, -7/+16Apple = PC
'Apple > Dell + Gateway + HP' or 'Mac > Windows' are probably closer to what you meant. - FoxOrian, on 11/25/2007, -0/+9Acronym Finder suggests it means "International Patent Organism Depositary," or perhaps more likely, "Interim Planning Overlay District"
- SouthsideIrish, on 11/25/2007, -2/+10Go back to 2001. This when Gateway was closing the Gateway Country stores and about the time Apple was releasing the 5gb iPod. The stores started going crazy once the iPod for Windows came out in November 2002.
- dreamersrevenge, on 11/25/2007, -2/+10That's almost as obnoxious as "more after the jump..."
- arjung, on 11/25/2007, -0/+8i use a macbook -- please don't stereotype.
- tyrione, on 11/25/2007, -1/+8The original iMac saved Apple. The iPod made Apple a viable product in the general consumer electronic space.
OS X is the flag ship that will keep Apple a growing business for decades to come. - LoudMusic, on 11/25/2007, -1/+8Eh, I've seen plenty of bad fortune telling - especially in Apple's realm. Look what this dumbass had to say.

Buuuuuurn *Hi-5's Mr.Sluberjack* - FoxOrian, on 11/25/2007, -1/+6i have a friend named Moran. She's korean. She's also loud.
- Butros, on 11/25/2007, -1/+6Best buy recently started selling Apple products in a section of the store that has a very familiar look (ie it looks like a satellite apple store).
- Spuy767, on 11/25/2007, -0/+5There was a GPU issue on certain iMacs. Fixed with firmware update.
- amirbd, on 11/25/2007, -0/+4I found this to be a sort of weird form of marketing...
I was at the Apple store in Century City goading my friend into buying an iPhone and noticed that every single salesperson I saw was wearing blue contact lenses. The first guy we talked to probably had naturally blue eyes because, with the contacts, his eyes were mega-bright piercing blue. Everyone else I got a good look at also had blue eyes. Asian, black, middle-eastern... Everybody!
I'm still undecided as to whether it's clever or too weird. -
