- juzsp, on 02/23/2009, -36/+104Apple could release a turd with a touch screen and it would still sell like hot cakes!
- Senturion, on 02/23/2009, -6/+65Why are we comparing a myriad of yet-to-be-released smartphones to one that has been out for 9 months?
Apple doesn't have to do anything "quick" because none of these apparent "iPhone Killers" are even for sale yet.
Also keep in mind, these new competitors -- unveiled in all their "working prototype" glory at Mobile World Congress -- are all aiming to catch up to the current iPhone, not the next version which will in all likelihood beat all of them to market.
Competitors who Announce things 6-9 months before shipping them doesn't mean a thing to Apple's development process, or it's market strategy. - inactive, on 02/23/2009, -5/+40Right, let's just excuse a lack of feature by claiming people don't need it. We don't need a lot of things, but having them is convenient.
It's like fanboys claiming they didn't need 3G, but when iPhone 3G came out, they were raving about it and laughing at any phone that didn't have 3G. - Zippo, on 02/23/2009, -16/+46Noo, my poor iPhone 3G is only months old... don't make it outdated already!
- inactive, on 02/23/2009, -32/+62Do people really need cut and paste THAT badly?? I guess it would be nice to have it but how often are you really gonna use it? The iPhone is supposed to be a high-tech phone, not a replacement for your desktop computer. All the crying about cut and paste is tiresome.
- groberts1980, on 02/23/2009, -3/+28Apple doesn't need a new iPhone to have cut & paste. It's called "software" for a reason.
- sizup, on 02/23/2009, -8/+30They do not need to release an upgraded iPhone to compete with the Palm Pre. That thing is going to flop since it will be released exclusively on Sprint. I was debating buying a Pre when they came out, but they made my decision easy when it was announced to be exclusive to sprint.
- Hydraulix, on 02/23/2009, -3/+24I'm going to write a blog and call it, "Why Apple doesn't have to do a ***** thing because you say so."
- evilregis, on 02/23/2009, -3/+23I cut and paste quite often on my Blackberry Curve. When you have the ability, you use it.
- ninjatech123, on 02/23/2009, -9/+28What kind of apple fan boy are you! You should celebrate when you apple overlords give you something new to spend your money on! Its the apple way!
- enclaved, on 02/23/2009, -5/+24Prior to buying an iPhone, I felt exactly the same way you did listening to people complain about the lack of copy and paste.
After buying an iPhone, I found myself wanting to copy a link into beejiveim and other apps rather frequently.
After installing clippy last week, I find myself copying and pasting all the time. - ihavebeenseen, on 02/23/2009, -4/+21au internet fail
- ZeroSum1975, on 02/23/2009, -3/+19C'mon this product isn't even out on the market yet. And we don't really know when it will be out on the market. You're gonna tell Apple when to release it's OWN product? No, Apple tells you when to release YOUR product. Usually, that's after Apple releases a kick ass revolutionary product that makes your own product look like it was from the 70's...
- F0RMLESSNESS, on 02/23/2009, -0/+12What are you new to technology or something?
- specialK16, on 02/23/2009, -4/+15Oh yeah, because iTunes is the ultimate music player out there... and you haven't even used WebOS so I have no idea what you are talking about.
- kotatsu, on 02/23/2009, -1/+12All Apple need to do is stop being so incredibly retarded and blocking the likes of TomTom from releasing turn by turn GPS. The way they are behaving is beyond insane and is the one massive omission in the iPhone at present. Stuff like cut and paste, MMS etc would be nice too, but TBT is the big one for me.
- tyrulz, on 02/23/2009, -0/+11it's not how OFTEN I would use it, but instead how when I want to use it, i ***** can't and it irritates me
- tyrulz, on 02/23/2009, -1/+11just don't care that it's outdated and enjoy how badass it is anyway
- NanoHelix, on 02/23/2009, -1/+11Palm Pre will be initially released on Sprint.
A GSM version will be released outside the States.
The GSM version will also be marketed on other carriers in the US purportedly as soon as January 2010.
What's so bad about Sprint? It's service is superior to and cheaper than AT&Ts. Sprint's EVDO coverage is 3-4 times larger than AT&Ts and Sprint has been far more reliable in my experience (using iPhone 3G on AT&T and BlackBerry Curve on Sprint). Sprint also roams on Verizon, which is the largest all-round network in the US. The iPhone's achilles heel is AT&T. - beesaretasty, on 02/23/2009, -1/+10I use it all the time on my Windows Mobile pretty often and I don't use that as a desktop replacement. That's like saying who needs a touchscreen? If you want a basic phone, buy a basic phone. Not having copy paste on a device like the iPhone is just baffling to me.
- theliamburns1, on 02/23/2009, -3/+12But the quality of programs wont compare. Developers are cashing in on the appstore.
- MrViklund, on 02/23/2009, -2/+11IT'S NOT outdated just because they release a new model. It's just not the newest model. A phone from 1995 is outdated, not your iPhone 3G.
- saboola, on 02/23/2009, -1/+10I am pretty sure iPhone handles this by making the address a clickable link in the outlook appointment, which opens it up in google maps using the maps app.
- RegalBegal, on 02/23/2009, -8/+17So sick of reading electronics speculation blogs.
- Twinnie, on 02/23/2009, -0/+9Yeah but Apple patented the bouncy effect when you get to the end of a scroll list. What's more important to you, buttons for dialling or bouncy?
- Bradl3y, on 02/23/2009, -2/+11Yes, people like me need to. I travel for work to customers sites. I get outlook appointments via my blackberry. The address is entered into the location field. On my BB, I need to copy and paste this into the Google Maps application. Without this, i would be sitting in the parking lot of my previous customer, writing down the address just so i could type it back in on my phone.
- badqat, on 02/23/2009, -4/+12Huge? Really?
Palm Pre - 3.96” by 2.34” by 0.67”
iPhone 3G- 4.3″ by 2.4″by 0.33″
Really? - gaqua, on 02/23/2009, -1/+9I'm not sure Hot Cakes have the sales we've been led to expect.
If they did, there'd be tons of Hot Cake selling joints around, but as it is, Hot Cakes are only found at a few places. Try ordering them from Outback or Chili's or Friday's. No such thing on the menu. - Zuwxiv, on 02/23/2009, -3/+11You know, I could make an argument that his chart has some biased choices of material to judge... But to be honest, it's just plain wrong.
Processor - I don't know the relative benchmarks, but if you want to over simplify (such as, comparing the iTunes environment and iPod functionality to tethering) then 620mHz beats 600.
Software - Jesus Christ, if anything, this is where Apple shines. And I'd always rather have 2.1 than 1.0.
Memory he gave to Apple.
Size: I don't know his argument, but the iPhone is smaller (in volume) and thinner. A little bigger on the sides because of the bigger screen. I'd give this to the iPhone.
Weight: It's one thing to say you like things heavier, but a 2 gram difference is nothing. iPhone is lighter.
Display and network he gave to Apple.
Right there, it's 7-0 for Apple where he gave 3-2.
US Network: It's 2 years for ATT, not 5; but the less time the better. Where's a price comparison? That's more important than 2g weight difference. Pre gets this one.
Device control: I like the iPhone, but I can understand how people want a keyboard. Goes to the Pre.
GPS - Obviously to the Pre, but at least it's a software issue and not a hardware one like previous points.
Connectivity - Stereo bluetooth sounds pretty cool, but I haven't gotten to use it yet. Pre.
Camera - Apple's definitely lacking on this hardware point. Where's video? Pre.
Pre comes back but still a bit behind - 7 to 5, Apple's up.
Battery: You know, I really wish it was removable too, but modern batteries don't have the same problem as older ones. Given the choice, I'd rather have a more powerful battery that's non-removable than a removable one that is less powerful. I'd give this to the iPhone - after all, it's an on-paper comparison. 1400 to 1200.
Battery remains to be seen.
Special features: Really, comparing an iPod to a tethering device? I mean, that's apples and palms. Unfortunately, the most recent I've heard is that tethering has been cut.
http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/19/palm-pre-no-lon ...
That makes this a smashing victory for the iPhone - say what you want about iTunes, it's ridiculously easy to use, and everyone loves their music players.
Even if you call the battery a draw, 8-5 Apple.
Design: Okay, you're not even trying to hide your ***** if you don't give Apple one point for design. Seriously. Stop it.
9-5 Apple
Copy and Paste: Seriously Apple, this was mastered more than a decade ago. Pre.
Wireless charging: LIkely cancerous, but dangerously cool. Pre.
9-7 Apple
Third Party applications.
20,009-7.
His own chart tells me that the iPhone's better, which isn't necessarily the case. How about people stop trying to compare them and just try using both in a store, when they're available, and decide which they like better and which better suits their needs? - anexanhume, on 02/23/2009, -7/+14Well, they have been known for creating innovating technologies, especially combining technologies no one else has before.
- Fadakar, on 02/23/2009, -0/+7The palm has been around since man.
- MrViklund, on 02/23/2009, -1/+7Apple will probably release a new iPhone within a year. But I don't think they need to hurry. They have a really good looking phone, a solid hardware base. Now they are focusing on Software. The fastest iPhone/Touch device today is actually the second gen iPod Touch which is notably faster then both the first iPhone, iPod Touch, and the iPhone 3G. This article is a very good one on the subject. I recommend it. http://toucharcade.com/2008/07/07/under-the-hood-t ... I'm exited over the Palm Pre. Not that I'm going to buy one but it will be interesting to see what becomes of it and how it will affect the marketplace and the competition. Now we have at least 5 major platforms. One thing that I wonder though is how much of a consumer device the Palm Pre will be. At Palms presentation at CES they were talking allot about how you didn't need to learn any new programing language if you already knew CSS, Javascript, HTML and so on. There is just one problem with that and I have not seen this mentioned anywhere, in any article, podcast, blog etc which I found really strange is that this device will probably have Zero games. No OpenGL programing or anything gaming related. I haven't seen anyone bring this up which is odd. because when you look at the iPhone Apps today, it's the gaming segment that is performing the best. We will see. If they can't come up with something, this new Web OS will just be for normal calling activities and business.
- drunkenoaf, on 02/23/2009, -0/+6Hey! The Newton wasn't that bad!!!
/egg freckles? - ninjatech123, on 02/23/2009, -0/+6Actually I'm not really a fanboy of anyone, i have several windows computers, a laptop with leopard and xp dualbooted, and two linux computers, and i use each for whatever propose it does best. I reserve the right to mock all 'hardcore' fanboys equally.
- sremick, on 02/23/2009, -1/+7There's very little wrong with the iPhone 3G that can't be solved by:
- A firmware update
- A reduction in idiocy/retardedness/***** on Apple's part (app exclusions, lack of codecs, etc)
- Correction in plan pricing that puts it closer with sanity and/or the competition ($30/mo for a "data" plan that doesn't include unlimited text messaging? WTF?) - wolfing, on 02/23/2009, -7/+13like a right mouse button
- theotheragentm, on 02/23/2009, -1/+7I doubt I'm the first one to ask this, but what is so great about hot cakes? I'm more partial to waffles.
- G001, on 02/23/2009, -1/+6I know it's not what you meant when you asked "what do you think?", but why do people still bother with screen protectors? I haven't seen one applied that didn't look bubbly and ugly. Oh, I'll protect my screen from maybe looking bad in a year by making it definitely look bad now. It's the same with little rubber/plastic skins for people's gadgets. I don't want my shiny, glossy exterior to not look as good in a year so I'll make sure you don't see it at all. People wouldn't buy devices that look like that out of the box, but then they'll make them look like that themselves anyway. The only considerations I make for mine is not putting it in the same pocket as something like keys, and putting it in my pocket with the screen facing my leg in case I bump a table corner or something. That's it. </rant>
All that said, I'm psyched about the Pre. I'm already on Sprint and my phone is ancient so I'm going to be all over this. - aristotle0dude, on 02/23/2009, -0/+5@scarwars: Well you don't need one as you are already one without it.
- danielsamuels, on 02/23/2009, -7/+12Why are 135 grams better than 133 grams? Surely with a phone you want it to be light?
- CamperBob, on 02/23/2009, -0/+5Actually a lot of those animations are there to cover up slow processing. A faster CPU would not be a bad thing in an iPhone.
- sdphost, on 02/23/2009, -6/+11Why do so many people want a physical keyboard? After just a little bit of use and I can flash through any emails I need to write.
- gluechunk, on 02/23/2009, -1/+6
The current Sidekick is outdated in many ways, but I'm constantly using copy/paste on it, a function that has existed on the device for years and years. It's not uncommon for me to come across an interesting paragraph of a lengthy article (that I'm reading on the web), copy the paragraph to the clipboard, flip to an IM window, and paste the paragraph (and maybe the URL) into an IM conversation. That's one little example. I suppose life without copy/paste is possible, but it's not a world I want to live in. - Induane, on 02/23/2009, -2/+7I'm just glad my Android phone has it.
- 11oops, on 02/23/2009, -0/+5It sure would be nice if I could copy & paste the message ID and password from the MMS notifications telling me to visit http://www.viewmymessage.com/1 to see the MMS someone sent me.
- incongruity, on 02/23/2009, -0/+5Sounds to me like we could generalize and say that carrier lock-in hamstrings any mobile device unfortunate enough to suffer from such an arrangement...
- esquire360, on 02/23/2009, -1/+6I'd Like Multimedia TXT messaging... having to go online t look at a phone picture is retarded.
- clickmyface, on 02/23/2009, -0/+4break the screen
- clickmyface, on 02/23/2009, -0/+4those 3 patents prove exactly how absurd the patent industry is. I'm not sure how well they would hold up, either.
- z0otsuiter, on 02/23/2009, -0/+4light a candle for Mitch.
