- danielwsmithee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23It appears to me that Apple is positioning itself to take on Dell not Microsoft.
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21No, I'm pretty sure having a 92% desktop marketshare doesn't suck.

Don't get me wrong, you're right, Apple's awesome. But it's a hell of a stretch to say "Sucks to be microsoft". - pierre, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21This is big news man, deal with it for 1 day....
- Chaucer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18Agreed, this is huge. Digg Here's a link to their story about it:
http://www.osx86project.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=163&Itemid=2 - GoodBrain, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16Blah. This hardly represents Apple weaning its users off OSX. It's simply making it easier for Windows users to buy macs while still having the option of running their windows software, in doing so, it's making it easier for Windows users to use OSX.
I think this will have a big appeal to gamers, who might like the MacOS for lots of things, but can't live without the selection of PC only games. - longofest, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15@90nine... yes and no... I personally think they are doing the opposite. They are making the Macs more appealing for Windows users, so that they will buy a Mac. Eventually, they hope to start running Mac OSX only...
These firmware updates though I'm pretty sure don't provide ALL the support that is needed to run XP. Boot Camp is still needed. - zezak, on 10/12/2007, -8/+18Who said Apple's dumping Mac OS X? Attracting more people to it by giving users the "crutch" of booting to Windows certainly doesn't mean getting rid of Mac OS X.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14more like apple is slowly weening windows users to OS X...
Actually more like apple is QUICKLY weening windows users to OS X - tehJR, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14a lot of the value in a mac is in the software you get with it.
- canyonblue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10BTW: Here is Windows XP Home running on my intel iMac 20 inch via Boot Camp... couldn't have been easier and it smokes... Battlefield 2 runs beautiful.

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+18Apple will never dump their OS in favor of Windows, I dont understand where you got this idea from but dumping a more stable OS for a less than woth my fart OS would be suicide.
""Apple has no desire or plan to sell or support Windows, but many customers have expressed their interest to run Windows on Apple's superior hardware now that we use Intel processors," Philip Schiller, senior vice president of worldwide product marketing, said in a statement." - sundancekid503, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11"apple is killing the ***** our of microsoft on their product updates front and consumer satisfaction front."
Seems to me like this would be a plus for Microsoft, not something that would "kill the *****" out of them. They'll sell more copies of XP and eventually Vista because of this. - krschuerman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I think Apple was waiting for it to happen just to see how many people would jump on it. They knew it was possible and once it was in the wild and popular they brought out the "we can do it better" method.
- deadlychicken, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9the boards over at osx86project are generally considered the place to post such information, but the apple press release is here: http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2006/apr/05bootcamp.html
and the product beta page here: http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/ - diskopo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8@mtlea
"What's that columnist you like, that writes goofy ***** on the walls and eats mozzarella sticks?" - ThatsUnpossible, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8It's hard to put a price on "It just works," but Apple has found a way.
- drw2583, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14Huge.
Can we get a link to something other than a message board though? - pierre, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11But joe user is more easily convinced by his buddy to try out a mac next time knowing that if he really needs it, he can boot XP! This is a great move by apple.
- livesunkept, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6my issue is people are always saying 6% vs microsofts 90% or whatever...
well realistically lets forget the os and just look at it as a hardware company briefly... they are beating the ***** out of a lof of competitors no way in hell you are going to tell me sony sells more pc per quarter then apple - aggies11, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Good plan.
As most people who have ever dual booted in the past know, you eventually find yourself using one of them more often then the other.
Attract windows users by allowing them to use windows, but over time, they will spend most of the time in OSX. Voilla, you now have full on converts.
How long before we have OSX based programs whose job is to clean viruses/spyware off of the Windows parition? heh
Aggies - brandizzle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Apple is damn good at getting everybody to "need" their products. First everybody needs an iPod, so they can listen to their music collection wherever they are, and now everybody needs the stability of a Mac with the compatibility of Windows.
- sundancekid503, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11"Oh wait... You do know what Bittorent is right? No? I send my condolences."
Are you are aware that there is a HUGE business market that does not download all of their software from torrents? There are legitimate businesses and customers out there you know.
And to answer your question, yes... everyone knows what bittorrent is Sherlock. - MetalRemains, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5apple, ms, and linux all bootable on one box finally! it's a great time to be a tech geek!
- boolean, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6hasta la vista!
- SuperRob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Illuminatus ... there aren't decent enough ATI drivers to allow gaming on the Macs just yet. I'm sure they'll be coming soon.
- cavemanf16, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I take issue with all the other lamers on this thread that say "What's the point?" for existing Windows users who "won't want to buy both OS's." Nice try at FUD, but I can say that this just ISN'T true! My wife, for one, HATES her Microsoft computer because it crashes all the time, gives annoying, non-descriptive error messages, etc. (All the usual Windows luser complaints) I have been running Windows XP on the same machine with multiple hardware upgrades for the past 3-4 years. No reinstall for me or my wife because it would take DAYS to get the thing back up and running by starting from scratch. Lastly, we both MUST use WINDOWS ONLY applications because of various business reasons.
So, although we both loathe our Windows machines and want to do away with that OS for most uses, we're stuck with certain products from other vendors that decided to use Microsoft only software programming techniques. Sure, such decisions for their company probably made a lot of sense, but that doesn't mean they made a lot of sense for ALL of their customers. And where the technologically savvy go, the Joe Users of the world are sure to follow. This is some pretty incredible news on the Apple front. - joehobbes, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9I'd buy a Mac Mini over a $500 Dell ANY day
- Angostura, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4No! Do you really want the Windows side of the box to be able to read and write to the Mac OS X sife? No you don't.
The way it works by default with bootcamp is the Mac side can read/write the Windows partition, but not vice versa. I really don't want some Windows malware stomping all over the OS X partition. - g30ph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It's only useful and important to people who prefer Mac OS but occassionally need Windows, and only want 1 pc.
- jpbleuu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5i personally would love to purchase a intel mac mini and run xp on it. i'm not a big fan of the mac os. and while i work in IT i'm not really a big computer user at home. just for music, internet and chatting, and xp works fine for me on all those fronts.
- seattle98104, on 10/12/2007, -22/+25so when's this "vista" comming again?
apple is killing the ***** our of microsoft on their product updates front and consumer satisfaction front.
they're doing what people are asking for and providing it in a timely fashion.
sucks to be "vista". - mattyohe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5How? If you buy a Mac, you have already bought the OS. You can't buy a Mac without the OS so Apple is losing nothing by doing this. They are only getting more people to buy a Mac for the sole purpose of dual booting with XP and then hopefully moving over to OSX.
If that doesn't happen well, then it's just another mac sold. - boardr247, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's Beta... That means it's not done yet. I'm sure by final release they'll have better driver support. And have at least 85% of the Apple hardware supported.
- jschrab, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4You don't ALWAYS drive a BMW on the autobahn - sometimes you just need to pick up groceries...
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8Doubtful.. Dvorak's argument has been shot down a million times already. It makes no sense. Boot Camp is simply a way for OSX users to access games and legacy apps.
- g30ph, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5see this is exactly where you lose me. You're interested in the Mac for asthetics alone. Yeah I like Apple's cases, but I would have to have money flowing from my ass before I bought a pc based on what it looks like.
- Lynxpro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Its more like Coleco's old strategy of getting consumers to buy their ColecoVision game system instead of an Atari 2600 or 5200 back in the day. Coleco offered an adapter that allowed the ColecoVision game system to play Atari 2600 games. This appealed to families who did not already have an Atari 2600 but wanted the ability to be able to play Atari games despite buying the competitor's system. It also had the impact of luring away the already current Atari 2600 owners who wanted a next-generation system but weren't too happy that the Atari 5200 was not natively compatible with the 2600 library.
The end result was that the adapter sold many ColecoVision game systems even though not many of the actual adapters were sold. And so too will BootCamp do for the Macs. Existing WindowsPC users will migrate away to the Macs because now they know there is some security in that they can use their old software on the new Macs and they don't have to wait for compatibility updgrades/modes to be added to Windows Vista long after it eventually ships. It will also attract new computer users to the Macs because again there's security in running that "vast" library of WindowsPC software if the user ever finds the need to do so. And Apple gets to exploit all of this without having to pay the Windows tax on each system sold.
If I were HP or Sony, I'd be asking for some deep volume OEM discounting from Microsoft. We may yet see the day where Dell becomes the sole WindowsPC manufacturer with the others exiting the market and/or switching to offering some Joe Average end-user usable Linux distribution. - conigs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Is there any particular reason you feel the need to post the same exact comment on nearly every story concerning Boot Camp? I'm really not into internet acronyms... in fact, I hate them, but STFU!
- Timjacobs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I can't even install XP i tried it but bootcamp says i have to repair my startup disc.. how do i do this?
- knightcrawler75, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Apple fan-boys unite. This is a definite win for Microsoft and Apple. By the way apple is a hardware company for those who still do not know.
- skipere, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Now I'll buy a Mac .To me, they all tools, the more flexibility I have the better.
- KilgoreCarp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's nice to see apple make a move to increase flexibility and options for users on their systems. kudos.
- EricBoyers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2John C. Dvorak is insane. Don't get me wrong, I like Dvorak and I like that he's insane. It's just that sometimes the sun shines on a dogs butt too and this is one of those times.
- Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is awesome. I might just get a Macintosh when ol' betsy here dies on me.
- DocDEB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is excellent news! Now I will buy an Intel based Mac and be able to run the one or two Windows programs that I have to run and still have my Mac for everything else. In a year I expect that we will see both OSes running concurrently on multi-core systems with the switch between the two (or maybe more depending upon # of cores and available RAM and disk space) similar to the current user switching -- rotate out of OSX to Windows then rotate back -- bingo.
- carrett, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Great! Now we just need a R/W NTFS driver for OS X and a R/W HFS+ driver for Winblows and I'm totally down to start purchasing a fancy shiny Intel iMac.
