- u3b3rg33k, on 06/10/2009, -13/+130OMG, I bought milk last week, and I still have to pay full price this week? WTF
- megamod, on 06/09/2009, -9/+101I was b!tching an whining before but...now...Touché!
It means a lot this coming from Gizmodo which was one of the most bitter people blogging about apple's presentation yesterday:
"The ad shows a spy peeking down at the iPhone 3GS, saying “it looks the same.” Yeah, because it pretty much is the same. "
"In Leopard you can select text from PDFs but it doesn’t always select logically. Now, it does. “We use a little bit of AI.” Great, so it works now? Good job?" - defcobra08, on 06/09/2009, -9/+76honestly...you'd be paying $218 for a videocamera that doubles as a compass....? save that money for next years WWDC...with all this disappointment and bad press on AT&T you know they're going to have a good outing next year they have to.
- phinn, on 06/09/2009, -1/+55As I still got the 1st-gen iPhone (when it hit $300, 2 years ago last August) all I can say is I'm glad I waited. It'll be nice to have all the new 3GS features in addition to HSDPA and GPS. I'll miss my metal phone though, and not looking forward to paying another $15/month over the original $60 iPhone plan... On second thought, maybe i'll even keep my 1st gen a while longer, screw it.
- petro62, on 06/09/2009, -0/+53I see it this way. The people with the money and the desire will go ahead and buy the 3gs and dish out the chunk of cash it will cost them. Other that are still bound to contracts or low on money can hold on to their older iPhones and wait till next year when another improved phone comes out. If I already had an iPhone this current one would not offer enough for me to pay a huge upgrade fee, but in my case I don't have an iPhone so I plan on getting the 3gs. This is the cycle of technology(or at least for those who want the latest and greatest).
- jads, on 06/09/2009, -2/+50I think it's hilarious that a lot of the comments on Gizmodo for this article are along the lines of "If you don't like it or are not eligible, get a Pre".
This seems to show the lack of knowledge people have for CONTRACTS. If a subscriber is locked into an existing iPhone 3G carrier contract then they can't upgrade their phone to anything - so saying 'Get a Pre' is stupid and pointless. It's not about the device - it's about the contract. - chrisxwhaley, on 06/09/2009, -12/+57This article took the words right out of my mouth. It's not my fault you're not an educated consumer.
- fluidfoundation, on 06/09/2009, -4/+46Seriously, I have a hard time being pissed just because I want something. I bought the original, and paid half the price when I bought the 3G. Pissed? No, I shelled out 600 for the original because I wanted it that bad. If I wanted this one that bad, I'd pay what they're asking or use my SELF CONTROL AND FREE WILL to say no, I'll go somewhere else or stay with what I got.
Never understood the "I've got to have it and they owe me because I've bought their crap before" mentality. That's not how business works.
At the same time I will be upgrading my wife's original iphone to that, swap it with mine, and be done with it. That's right honey, take it like a little bitch... - DanteDefiance, on 06/09/2009, -2/+40Indeed.
The 3G might not be as good as the Pre, but it's still a damn good cellphone.
I think we need to stop with idea that there is "One Phone to Rule Them All", because that will never happen. 2 years ago the iPhone changed the way we looked at phones, last year Android changed it AGAIN, this year Pre is the new hottness, and...you're not going to believe this but next year ANOTHER phone is going to have the best features.
It's just the way mobile tech rolls people. Don't cry every year when your phone is outdated by another phone that can do twice as many things. I mean at the end of the day if you have a G1, Pre, or iPhone; you have a ***** COMPUTER in the palm of your hand. - megamod, on 06/09/2009, -3/+38errrm...there were plenty of rumors to suggest a new iPhone in the works. A little research never hurt anyone...just sayin'.
- inactive, on 06/09/2009, -6/+41Yes, I'm afraid I'm passing on this one.
We get the iPhone OS 3.0 for free, so we will be fie. I just hope Safari is faster, like they say. - Jeepinator, on 06/10/2009, -6/+40A camera phone will never rival a camera even as simple as a coolpix.
- nesstheking1, on 06/10/2009, -5/+37I ***** hate the phrase "In this economy"
I stopped reading there (too bad it wasn't at the start of the article). - Shaggy3, on 06/10/2009, -5/+36SURPRISE iPhone contracts are the same as every other phone contract!
- bigsteve, on 06/09/2009, -8/+37I bought the 3G on day one, and completely understand the contract I signed. Just keep in mind that those that are mad were allowed to upgrade from the 2G to the 3G after only a year, so it's not completely illogical that they'd expect the same deal on the 3G[s]. Just sayin'.
I guess we have a product with a release cycle of one year, but with a two year commitment. That's a little awkward. I guess I'll just be upgrading to every OTHER iPhone. As someone who bought the 3G early, I'm upgrade-eligible (so long as I stay in good standing with AT&T) in December of this year. If I wait that long, I might as well just wait 6 more months and see if there's a 4th gen iPhone coming that's worth buying.
This all said, my 3G is still functioning fine and doing everything I need it to do, so I suppose I'm just as good as I was a few days ago. - Laughto, on 06/10/2009, -1/+26"Or better yet: Don't buy a new phone. Who cares about "new." Does your iPhone 3G work now? Yes?"
If people only knew this about all technology, they would be a lot happier in life. - Sherman901, on 06/09/2009, -2/+27The people that bought the 2G also bought it at full price and not subsidized. I bought mine for the full price when it came out so, there's the difference.
- DanteDefiance, on 06/09/2009, -6/+29Uhhh....there's more than one blogger at Gizmodo. That was Chen that cried like a baby through out WWDC.
- MScrip, on 06/10/2009, -2/+25>> "I just want the better camera so I can justify not buying a Nikon Coolpix"
Photography FAIL - MtheoryX, on 06/09/2009, -2/+24They gave a damn keynote last winter about the new OS 3.0 coming out in the summer.
Then they refreshed the ipod Touch with a 32GB version.
If you couldn't put two and two together and think they would update the iPhone in a year (since their updates have been a year apart anyway)... then you're just a dumbass. - wisedude, on 06/10/2009, -13/+30Actually, you do have an argument. You're signing a NEW two year contract, and not getting a subsidized phone. This is far worse than the industry standard. You entice people to sign a contract by offering subsidized phones. Instead, this is the "these poor bitches will do whatever we say" attitude, and its people like the writer of this article who promote this attitude.
The writer of this article is either ignorant, or doesn't realize that you're extending your contract for two more years to purchase an unsubsidized phone - alpha94, on 06/10/2009, -0/+17I like the part where people suddenly feel the world owes them something when they were perfectly happy before something new came out.
- mu0p, on 06/09/2009, -13/+30how dare you question apple and at&t's profit margins. A good fanboy never whines.
- blorc, on 06/09/2009, -0/+16It doesn't matter. The first gen iPhone wasn't subsidized, so he qualifies no matter what. You're only in the situation if you upgraded to a 3G. That was kind of the point of this whole article.
- phinn, on 06/09/2009, -4/+19Bitter what are you talking about I read the whole Gizmodo Blog and it was excellent.
I do disagree with you about the 3GS, it's an fantastic incremental improvement over the 3G. A compass (for navigation in google maps as it can turn with the phone), twice the storage (16GB), twice performance, a much much better digital camera due to it having auto focus. Video recording, editing and playback. Voice recognition, and better battery life. That's a hell of an update in 1 year to the iPhone. Not to mention pushed the price down of the old 3G to $99. - Braindead360, on 06/09/2009, -4/+19My personal opinion is that all of these features should have been in the original iPhone/iPhone 3G. I'm not going to upgrade my 3G until next year when the new iPhone (4G possibly) is released. My contract will be up by then and I'll be eligible for the discounted price. Personally, the 3GS just doesn't have that many advantages over the 3G for it to be worth the price of upgrading, whether is subsidized or unsubsidized. However, if the next model has 4G built in as well as other newer and better features, then I'll be all over that.
- anthonylam, on 06/09/2009, -3/+18Totally agree with this article. I'm still using a first generation 16 GB iPhone and when I update to iPhone 3.0 I still (relatively) have the same features as the newer models
- burntcookie90, on 06/10/2009, -1/+15its a contract. you sign it, you're set till it's over. i dont get the hard concept...
- ricksite, on 06/10/2009, -0/+13Everything is Amazing, Nobody is happy. - Louis CK
- thal3s, on 06/10/2009, -0/+12Not a problem if someone doesn't have many friends...
- thejokell, on 06/10/2009, -1/+13Bait and switch? Do you get the concept of a contract? You agreed to a discount on a phone (your current phone) in exchange for 2 years of service. After 1 year, you get a slight discount on new phones. And after 18 months you qualify for a fully subsidized phone.
Where exactly is the bait and switch in that scenario? Or did you just not understand what you were signing? - 0260, on 06/10/2009, -2/+14Maybe people should do careful research and purchase a phone knowing it will be good for at least 2 years. It's not a ***** pair of socks
- Cybrwolf, on 06/09/2009, -1/+12How are you going to be charged full price? Don't you meet the credit requirements?
- bigsteve, on 06/09/2009, -0/+11If he purchased the 1st gen right before the 2nd gen / 3G came out, it's still possible he'd be less than 18 months (which appears to be the magic number of months until your upgrade eligible) into his contract. The 3G came out about 11 months ago.
That said, he's probably only a month or two away from eligibility... maybe AT&T will have beefed up service properly for the load of nearly decade-old services like MMS and tethering by then :) - yokozuka, on 06/09/2009, -6/+17Personal insults? Calling a spade a spade is not a personal insult. If someone complains about something with no logic arguments whatsoever is a whiner, period.
- lukelucas, on 06/10/2009, -1/+12just my two cents in regards to those stating that with 3.0 you get all the great features, minus the new phone.
no, no you don't. you don't get the video camera, you don't get the auto-focus, you don't get the compass, you don't get the voice control, blah blah blah.
throwing that out there. - cleric04, on 06/10/2009, -2/+12Or you could omg sell your 3g iphone and get a 3gs god forbid you didn't make money on the whole exchange.
- kinseyincanada, on 06/09/2009, -10/+20Why the hell would someone upgrade anyone, all you get is a slightly faster phone, a marginally better battery life, and a compass and a ***** video camera.
- inactive, on 06/10/2009, -0/+10Whenever someone says "going green", "fanboy", "liberal" or "conservative" my skin crawls.
- madmage, on 06/10/2009, -2/+12"The best camera is the one you have with you."
I own a pretty expensive DSLR, but I find many of my favorite photos over the last few years have been taken with the iPhone, because it's ALWAYS with me, and therefore there for the "perfect moment" my DSLR is at home for.
Anything to improve something that I have on me all the time is worth it, in my mind. - Pinkertinkle, on 06/10/2009, -2/+11Does this apply to those of us who were dumb enough to buy the iphone or 599 around this time two years ago?
- MasterQ, on 06/10/2009, -0/+9The problem is that Apple announced the "official" price as the subsidized price and not the actual price. People are expecting to pay a certain amount and then they are told they have to pay over twice that amount because its not a new contract. If they would have announced the actual price and then said it would be subsidized at $199 and $299 for new contracts, I think they would have had less whining.
- kefkaantakrist, on 06/10/2009, -0/+8Incidentally, the iPhone fetches a nice price. You could ditch it and buy the new one and the remaining expense would be less painful. If you unlock it before you sell it that would help too. Furthermore, when the iPhone 4 is released next year you could upgrade to it, and sell your 3G-S to (partially) pay for it.
How much is the unsubsidized price of the GS anyway? - rusty_g, on 06/10/2009, -0/+8here is the point, At&T set the standard LAST YEAR when they allowed for the iPhone to be upgraded to the 3G without any questions!!!! THEY set the standard, not US. I bought the original iPhone in February 2008, then upgraded to the 3G in July of 2008. NO QUESTIONS ASKED. I sold my iPhone on eBay overseas and bought the new 3G. There was no question because I was adding on 2 more years that I didn't originally sign up for. It's like an addendum or even a contract change. I am not asking they tear up my contract. I am simply asking they give me the subsidized price for another 2 year extension. This is why we are so called "whining" Gizmodo.. Go Screw yourself... by the way, you lost a lot of readers today....
- migitalwarfare, on 06/10/2009, -0/+8... and repay the subsidy to AT&T via their early termination fee
- EVILTHETURTLE, on 06/09/2009, -8/+16You are ***** dumb.
- M3wThr33, on 06/10/2009, -0/+8A compass. A ***** compass. Have you actually ever ***** wanted a compass? I guaran-*****-tee that in a list of 10, 20, 50 most desired iPhone new features, a COMPASS is not on there.
Hell, for GPS driving and turn by turn crap, it isn't needed since that can be auto-determined by the direction you are moving. - rexlu, on 06/10/2009, -2/+9Why not just pay the early termination fee of $175?
(I remember the fee suppose to decrease by $5 each month.)
Then buy a iPhone 3GS as a new customer. - M3wThr33, on 06/10/2009, -2/+9Because it's new and has words and terms they know nothing about. Look on Twitter. There's people freaking out about it, even though it looks EXACTLY the same and will do everything EXACTLY the same aside from two features. But, yes, go ahead and blow $500 for a crappy camera rather than buy a real video camera because you NEED the latest iPhone that you won't do anything on.
