- laserob, on 10/10/2007, -13/+146My thoughts exactly. I already have a nice display. The Mac Pros are just too damn expensive and the Mac Mini's graphics card just doesn't cut it.
- monsterofNone, on 10/10/2007, -15/+100that's what steve jobs needs... another blogger with "a better idea."
- LeeVal, on 10/10/2007, -12/+77No a Tower mac just like the MacPro but smaller. Core 2 Duo 7800GTX for $999 would be nice
- cmiz, on 10/10/2007, -13/+73Have you ever swapped out the video card, added more ram or another hard drive to an iMac? It's difficult or impossible. Not to mention if your screen craps out you're SOL. A lot of people have been saying that Apple needs a mid-range desktop for a long time... but it's just not in their business plan.
- axiomflash, on 10/10/2007, -64/+113um, thats what an imac is.
- randomtask43, on 10/10/2007, -0/+36Not true. See: http://www.apple.com/imac/technology/graphics.html under Double Vision.
"All iMac models let you connect a second display in either extended desktop mode or video mirroring mode" - brainScan, on 10/10/2007, -15/+45He wants a Mac that can do dual 30" Apple Displays and RAID-1 on internal drives. Yeah... I see that configuration as being mid-entry level. They're sitting on secretaries' desks across the country.
I think that only thing missing in the mac lineup is your clue... go get one - zwei, on 10/10/2007, -8/+37That is a load of crap. The new iMac screens (especially on the 24" models) are almost identical to the Apple Cinema Displays now. They are very high quality.
- KevenM, on 10/10/2007, -12/+40More importantly, where's the Gaming Mac?
Windows: Check!
CPUs: Check!
FSB: Check!
RAM Capacity: Check!
Video Card: FAIL
That's a huge growing market they're missing out on - NalosLayor, on 10/10/2007, -26/+50exactly. The mini is the low end, the iMac is their mid range offering, and the pro is their high end. Adding another unit is unnecessary, it'd become like differentiating between Chevy/Buick/Pontiac/Oldsmobile/Cadillac instead of scion/Toyota/Lexus.
- omarciddo, on 10/10/2007, -7/+30Not quite. The difference between an Mac mini and an iMac is pretty small compared to between an iMac and a Mac Pro. There's plenty of room for an offering in between.
- Sheaf, on 10/10/2007, -2/+25Did you actually read the blog post?
- dandiemer, on 10/10/2007, -12/+34use it with an imac and you have two nice displays.
- brainScan, on 10/10/2007, -6/+28Ya know, something between a chevy and a mercedes would be nice, like a mercedes with a chevy price tag.
- ozid, on 10/10/2007, -4/+23I like that he wants his company to use dual 30 inch displays, but doesn't see a need for a mac pro. His company could have given everyone two 24 inch dispays, and use the remainder to upgrade everyone to pro's...
30 inches is a bit extreme, especially if your going to bitch and moan about the cost. - etandrib, on 10/10/2007, -0/+18Like any of us want to pay an extra $500 to read Blu-Ray? Oh, you do… ok.
- MonkeyFarts, on 10/10/2007, -2/+20I'd personally rather they hold out until standard is set.
- rebotfc, on 10/10/2007, -8/+26The problem is there is no money in that price band. Dell and their ilk have cut the bottom out of the market and the only way to make a buck is shovel ***** otherwise your system won't be seen as competitive. Why should apple compete over a market with 5 bucks / 0.5% profit margin per unit sold.
- brycelb, on 10/10/2007, -8/+26Good observation, I would tend to agree. The only thing that would make sense is Apple is still afraid to go back to the mid 90's when their offerings were too confusing for the types of people they were marketing to. It seems like the company is in a good position to at least explore that segment and and see if something sticks.
- darksheer, on 10/10/2007, -8/+26The traditional Macintosh has always been an "all-in-one-box" machine. That was the genius of the original iMac, is that it really wasn't anything other than the original Mac concept with updated hardware and a pretty translucent plastic case.
- zwei, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15Nope. They have screen spanning. They USED TO only mirror ..not anymore.
- GetShorty, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16NM, I'm wrong. That's how my iMac Rev. B is, but not the new ones.
- number5, on 10/10/2007, -3/+18it seems like most people are not reading the article, the thing is there is no good business class mac desktops out there, you ether have to get a imac that none of it can be recycled to the next generation, or a pro that just is to costly
- mightytribble, on 10/10/2007, -2/+17That's the Enthusiast in you talking. The 'a lot of people' you refer to are fellow enthusiasts on the Internet - and they, like you, are not Apple's target audience because Apple knows it cannot compete on features/price with what an enthusiast wants. There's also the more practical issue of drivers - an expandable Mac requires Apple to write more drivers for OS X to maintain it's reputation of 'just working', and that's a marginal investment at best.
The average user never opens their computer case. Apple knows this, and that is who the iMac is directed to - the person who just wants to buy a new computer every three years or so and have it 'just work'. No upgrades, no case openings. - bSimms, on 10/10/2007, -26/+39I really don't think there is a big hole.
2.0 ghz mini with 1gb memory - 799
2.0 ghz iMac with 1 gb memory - 1199 - meatmcguffin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12Uh...just click submit comment twice. It isn't that hard
tada! :P - meatmcguffin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12Uh...just click submit comment twice. It isn't that hard
see :P - Duncan3, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13This "better idea" is ancient. OS X users have been complaining loudly about it for ages. I'm one of them.
- billymonster, on 10/10/2007, -6/+17just buy the last gen mac pro.
- incubowski, on 10/10/2007, -9/+20That is, well was, complete BS. Before the newest iMac it was a piece of cake to change the hard drive and RAM, I did both. Now as far as the GPU goes I think it is was possible. I do agree that the you can't do some of that stuff with the newest iMac, but they made replacing RAM even easier, which is the most common upgrade, external hard drives are used by a lot of people. The article makes a good point, but obviously you don't know what you talking about when you say it's difficult or impossible to add more RAM to an iMac.
- fak3r, on 10/10/2007, -4/+15...but neither are expandable. Regardless of if ppl are going to expand them in the future, people see it as a nick against the iMac/minis - if they want expansion they only have the Pro, which is far too expensive when compared with similar PC offerings. The poster is spot on (/me looks at the url to figure what site he's on...)
- ericdano, on 10/10/2007, -14/+24Blogger=person with too much time on their hands. You know, you can use TWO displays on a iMac. It works great. I use it on my iMac.
- Kerrigore, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10People who buy Alienware computers are a great example of people with more money than sense.
- 2shae, on 10/10/2007, -4/+13Not only that but the PC gaming market isn't as big as you think.
It's big but not big enough for a company like Apple (which never really did anything for gaming) to jump in now - msgyrd, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10As much as I dislike Sony, I would much rather have a Blu-Ray recorder in my computer than an HD-DVD. For the home theater, they're roughly the same, but for computers, capacity is the trump card, and Blu-Ray wins by almost 10gb.
- GreenAlien, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9A good observation, but not one that hasnt been made before. For example I made the following comment yesterday in the following Digg post. Strange coinsidence given the wording using for this Digg post. Hmmm.
"What I'd love to see is an Apple desktop with the Shuttle form factor, with at least the power of an iMac. This would fill a huge gaping hole in the Mac lineup and I'd buy one in a heartbeat."
http://digg.com/apple/Apple_refreshes_Mac_mini/all
Anyway. It's a shame, because Apple are missing what would be the most desirable/practical computer in their range of desktop computers, and this has been the case for ages now. - devo6273, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Bring back the quadra! It could have 400GB of disk space instead of 4 mb of ram (or whatever it was called quadra for). They could call it the Quadra century edition and re-release oregon trail to go with it!
- Kerrigore, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9No respectable gamer buys any premade computer, whether it's Apple, Dell, or whatever. Premade gaming computers are for people with more money than sense, and I say that as a mac user.
- tnoy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8GeForce 8600M GT is not serious gamer card. It'll be fine for a while, but crap out on all the next-gen games.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8some ideas of "unique" should be kept to themselves..(points at all the blue LED fans and stupid cases that look like toy robots)
- techpr, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7What about lower the price on the Mac Mini.
- cbergeron, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7There's a huge amount of money to be had there. It's called OS X on a decent desktop machine.
Your average Jane Soccermom would still be able to surf, check email and get recipies, while Dad Thughead could check sports scores, etc. Meanwhile, the son doesn't have to worry about reinstalling windows when his parents click on a bad email greeting card.
There's a huge market there, just waiting to be had. - corbanb, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10I couldn't agree more. If I want a desktop solution from apple I really don't have one unless its a mac pro. and something starting at $2499 is totally out of reach when I get that from a DELL and something that is very maxed out to meet a flash developer or designers needs! Apple find us a middle man and don't say the iMac is it! We need the dual display setup and setup right!
- k3n85, on 10/10/2007, -5/+12I'm all PC all the way, build my own, but can I make my own mac from ASUS / nVidia ?no
I want a barebones Mac or tower minus that $$$$$ to get Xeon processors, where most of the money comes from. Give me an iMac with out a monitor please and in a tower - Arramol, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7The problem with that is, I'm more interested in saving money (without sacrificing performance) than having the extra display.
- jpdcarmaniac, on 10/10/2007, -10/+17I have to agree. If Mac truly wants to compete with leading computer manufacturers, they should make a basic "Mac." A desktop computer with a tower and monitor separate that's great for customizing and upgrade ability. This would broaden the Apple market to offices and homes who want a cheap computer.
- BootsElectric, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Macintosh II, Quadra series, Centris, Cube, Performa...
- tendonut, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9"um, thats what an imac is"
Hate to say it, but RTFM. The point the author was trying to get across is he wants a machine with the power similar to the iMac, but without the need to replace his display. I myself would LOVE to buy a Mac desktop, but the iMacs are too expensive because of the included display, the Mac Pros are overkill and a strain on the wallet, and the Mac Mini's just don't have the power I am after. - WiseWeasel, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7It's a good thing you were appointed as ambassador to all gamers. Sure saves me a lot of time telling you to get a clue. A large part of the 'gamer' segment is teens asking their parents for a computer that they will be able to use for gaming and other media, and an affordable tower Mac would fit nicely into this segment, where parents sure as hell aren't going to go for a Mac Pro... I'm sure Apple loses a significant amount of sales to this segment, and it's not like it would hurt them to try to expand their market in desktop computers, as the iMac is not the be-all, end-all solution for everyone, and the Mac Pro is priced out of mainstream market.
- monospaced, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Of course they have. Almost all tower Macs have fit this description, up until now. I was forced to purchase a 24" iMac because I simply couldn't justify the purchase of an overpowered Mac Pro PLUS a 24" LCD. The price difference is nearly $1,500. Most Mac users would agree that the "Mac" is missing.
