- 4LeggedtriPod, on 07/02/2008, -1/+15Dugg for the 2nd comment on the Gizmodo story. "Buy them from me, I have a van. I'll be in the mall parking lot at 3:00 AM. Bring cash."

- techblogLAT, on 07/02/2008, -1/+10Just a note: advice only applicable to corp/enterprise users. If you're buying an iPhone for personal use, you can get it whereever you want!
- Jpardue, on 07/02/2008, -0/+9What?
- F9Phoenix, on 07/02/2008, -3/+10Wow, that article was completely useless. Why the hell did it make front page?
- opticrime, on 07/02/2008, -1/+8I'm gonna say "not Canada" :)
- wiifm69, on 07/02/2008, -0/+6Exactly the question I was asking myself, then I realised that it had the word "iphone" in the title. OGC
- inactive, on 07/02/2008, -2/+8Curious if anyone has had problems transferring a number using an area code outside your billing area?
My only number, which is my cell through Verizon, is a 440 (Cleveland, OH) area code. I currently live in WV, a 304 area code. I just want to ensure I'll still be able to use the same number when I buy an iPhone and have AT&T. Trying to get a consistent and definite answer from either Apple or AT&T is like picking the 6 winning lottery numbers out of a hat for tonight's lottery. - wezman2, on 07/02/2008, -0/+5wait.... what?
- GregofJersey, on 07/02/2008, -0/+5Not likely but it is possible.
- cgruber, on 07/02/2008, -0/+5Yeah that's a problem all digg users have. Which random hot girl will I sleep with next?
- Butros, on 07/02/2008, -0/+5Maybe you should pay down your credit cards before buying a 200 dollar phone and committing to a 70 dollar a month plan?
- brundlefly76, on 07/03/2008, -0/+4I think Jobs wears Mom jeans now.
- inverselogic, on 07/02/2008, -0/+4Wayne's World jeans not included...
- ThatDustyGuy, on 07/02/2008, -0/+4If you want to experience what it's like to wait in line for a just released game console then go to the Apple Store.
If you want a possibly shorter line (if any) then go to AT&T, but you'll have to deal with (possible) bad sales reps. and a scratched phone when they can't figure out how to plug in the USB cord to the iPhone. (Just kidding about the last part, I hope.) - leerayIG88, on 07/02/2008, -0/+5omg...you said *****? didn't you mean a rooster?
- ThatDustyGuy, on 07/02/2008, -1/+5Has any journalist (or interviewer in general) asked him why he wears the same clothes out in public? Nobody really seems to care or notice that he does.
- loconet, on 07/02/2008, -2/+6I'm not too familiar on how it works outside North America but isn't the fact that there is an article comparing _where_ you should buy a communication device an indication of how broken the current mobile system is in North America? What next? We need to hire lawyers to buy cell phones?
Why can't I buy a phone and use it wherever I want with whatever provider I choose to? I shouldn't need to worry where I must buy a phone, how to unlock it, how many hidden fees I will be surprised with, etc. Why must everyone in the industry be out to squeeze the most out of my wallet now and for the next x number of years. Why must I be treated like a criminal if I want to use the device I purchased the way I want to?
I realize some will say "that's capitalism" but it seems like the other side of "capitalism" - us consumers telling them to piss off - is sitting idle taking it from behind. This is a sad state of affairs. - yikiad, on 07/02/2008, -0/+3none here on the last iphone launch. my number was ported the same day.
- matthewaaron, on 07/02/2008, -2/+5(rumor) OR... Best Buy / Radio Shack (/rumor)

- Laminarcissus, on 07/02/2008, -1/+4More important, where can I sell a kidney so I can afford it?
- billbugger, on 07/02/2008, -0/+3see the guy with the van at 3am. you may be able to make a deal with him.
- GregofJersey, on 07/02/2008, -1/+4While I love the technology behind the iPhone 3G, it is way too expensive. Sure it's along the lines of the other PDA phones, but as a college student, it really isn't worth it.
- bhovenkotter, on 07/02/2008, -0/+3The big difference between this year and last year is the required in store activation. Last year lines at the Apple Store moved much faster because there were lots of employees, each with a handheld device used to swipe credit cards. If everyone needs to activate this time around the lines will move much slower and the Apple employees will be doing activations for the first time, whereas the AT&T employees should be more experienced at it.
- zealotbleeds, on 07/03/2008, -1/+3Buried. You should never buy an iPhone.
- kreatre2007, on 07/02/2008, -0/+2If you have an Apple store nearby, go there. The employees at Apple will know far more about the device than the AT&T store employees. I was a Mac Genius at the Apple store Willow Bend when the first iPhone launched. After the launch, we got a lot of customers coming in for help because the AT&T store employees were clueless on how to fix even the most basic problems.
- dpowre, on 07/02/2008, -2/+3in the butt
- sjmulder, on 07/02/2008, -0/+2nem0, what does that have to do with Asperger's?
- delmauriow, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2It really does. I currently have the Simply Everything plan from sprint, I love it, the problem is I don't love my phone (blackberry 8830 World Edition) My contract with sprint is up and I want the new iPhone.
Problem 1: iPhone not available on Sprint
Problem 2: ATT Customer service is horrible
Problem 3: They want a $500 deposit because My credit took a dump after divorce.
Problem 4: Even if I wanted a regular phone on ATT and provided my own hardware I would still have to put up the obsurd amount of money upfront.
Bonus:
I can get a T-Mobile account with a new phone or use an unlocked 2G iPhone and not have a deposit. Something is seriously out of balance. - spoonchucks, on 07/03/2008, -1/+2Apple Store, like Starbucks, has an distinct air of douche-baggery to it.
I always feel like a tool when people see me at Starbucks. At least at the AT&T store, you can always claim to be paying a bill or something... - jakeacc, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1Are you saying that if I buy it from the AT&T store and have a problem with my phone in the future, I can't take it into the Apple store for technical support? I doubt that. People buy iPods from various vendors, but can still take it to the "Genius Bar" regardless of where the iPod was purchased.
- inactive, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1Sounds like they screwed you over , or didn't feel like doing the work to port your #, that costs them money and they won't waste the time if they can talk you into a new # , VOIP providers do this often
- spyraled, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1Speaking from experience from the first launch, go to an Apple Store.
We waited in line at AT&T for about 3 hours, only for them to sell out of all 20 phones (yes, they were only given 20 by Apple) in about an hour (yes, it took that long to checkout 20 phones). After leaving AT&T, I went to the Apple Store, walked up, stood in line, bought the iPhone and left in a matter of about 10 minutes. - solid12345, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1Does the AT&T store version come with the Snorg Tees girl?
- nowherelad, on 07/02/2008, -6/+7Or how about you boycott the Iphone all together and send AT&T a message: We don't support companies that violate the constitution and don't protect our privacy.
- jordanleegauci, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1Apple Store I think would be the best option.
- pyrates, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1Doesn't matter to the apple faithful, if they can't buy it directly from apple, they don't want it. Even if it's a better product or available at a cheaper price.
- inactive, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1ok..so 500 seems plausible now that I read a few threads. That guy better not be lying or I guess i'll get another 2 years at verizon. can't afford 500 bucks or more.
- LoudMusic, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1"When the iPhone 3G hits, it will be available at both AT&T and Apple stores."
????
I'm not talking about service, I only care about where it's available for PURCHASE. It is my understanding that it can only be bought at an AT&T store so that they can force you to get a 2 year contract and not just "unlock" it for use on other networks. - athinnes, on 10/01/2009, -0/+1I get off work at 5pm on the 11th. What do you think my chances will be to grab one at a chicago neighborhood att store? You think they will be sold out already?
- LoudMusic, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1I thought it was clear from the keynote that it was only going to be available at the AT&T store ... did I miss something?
- inactive, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1I doubt that. The guy want's to make a sale and they probably don't make too much commission on the sale of the phone as they do the accessories and applecare. I have his card even so he can't plead ignorant.
I some how doubt 500 bucks for a deposit. That seems ludicrous amount for a $75 plan and a 200-300 dollar phone. Still it bears looking into and it might push me back to Verizon. - jakeacc, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1I've been hearing a lot of stories about people having problems porting their number from area code X from Verizon to a new phone with area code Y from AT&T. I think on Engadget, they posted an article on how to "beat the system". When you fill out the activation form, for billing address, you obviously put your real current address. Then for the area that "you'll be using your iPhone the most", put an address from that original area code. So if you're from Cleveland (440), just write down your old apartment address or your parents address. If you put down an address thats not in the 440 area, you'll get the 'port ineligibility" error. If the AT&T guy is cool, he will tell you to change it to a Cleveland address, but if he isn't, he'll just say you aren't inelegible for an iPhone. With this method, your bill will go to your current address, and any AT&T spam will go to that Cleveland address. Once your phone is activated, number is ported, and everything is working, you can later update your info so everything is going to your current address.
- amenic, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1How about neither?
- sjmulder, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1I'm going to get it at an iCentre, and if they're out of stock I'll try a T-Mobile store.
- inactive, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1Yes you can, if its a cell phone, not if its a land line. Doesn't matter what state you are in , if your provider won't do it then they are garbage , file with the PUC. Most providers are idiots anyways and outsource the LNP portion of the company
