- totorototoro, on 01/17/2008, -1/+30DRM just makes the whole "rules" thing so tedious.
- Shady77, on 01/17/2008, -2/+24My head is spinning... back to BitTorrent.
- inactive, on 01/17/2008, -4/+18I bought Robocop last night and was excited to watch it when all of the sudden iTunes crashed and poof, no 'Robocop' when I reopened iTunes. I guess I could call Apple and get a second chance to download it but at this point I'm too depressed.
- sladek, on 01/17/2008, -2/+15It should be "What you can (and can't) do with iTunes and Apple TV rentals"
- inactive, on 01/17/2008, -2/+13"I'd buy that for a dollar!" Robocop. The perfect movie for iTunes.
- mywhitenoise, on 01/17/2008, -0/+11Yeah, that .99 cent price per song has really dropped. Those iPod game prices are dropping like flies.
MacPros, and MacBooks are getting cheaper, not more EXPENSIVE.
I'm being sarcastic. I've been buying apple products for close to 15 years, and for the most part their prices are getting worse. $250 to add an extra GB of RAM to a MacPro? ***** that.
That's cool man, if you're a dumbass who wants to spend $5 for a 24 hour file, go for it. I'd rather pay $5 to own the DVD, or $15 for the blu-ray. - Radan, on 01/17/2008, -0/+9Have you tried choosing "Check for Purchases" under the "Store" menu in iTunes? I believe iTunes will then try to download all movies and songs that you have bought but for some reason haven't successfully downloaded yet. That might do the trick. Else if this doesn't work you shouldn't hesitate calling or emailing Apple. The few times that I have had any problems with the music store, Apple has been overall very friendly to this kind of stuff.
- kilofox, on 01/17/2008, -0/+8Normally I despise DRM... but in the case of rentals, how would you go about it? Oh wait... you would depend on the good-will of the consumer to delete the file after a subscribed "rental time"? Yeah right......
- thefurball, on 01/17/2008, -1/+9I have a Mac Mini essentially working as an AppleTV. Being locked out of HD content because it is not an actual AppleTV is rather annoying.
- salvadorwii, on 01/17/2008, -0/+7dugg for
Transfer anything: to non-Apple devices on Apple Tv: Are You High? - jjustice, on 01/17/2008, -0/+6Hah, I didn't even notice it at first. The internets: they are dumbifying me.
- whiledo, on 03/25/2009, -0/+5It was a satire of stupid TV catchphrases.
- n8r0n, on 01/17/2008, -0/+4attention whore...
- MacEnvy, on 01/17/2008, -0/+4I find it amusing that someone complaining about others' laziness can't be bothered to spell out "and" (3 times!) or "people's".
Keyboards are cheap, if you wear one out you can get another. No need to be stingy with letters. - xsecretfiles, on 01/17/2008, -0/+3why can't life be simpler?
- Spelvin, on 01/17/2008, -0/+3What resolution are you running your monitor, 854X480?
- OpaqueMurdock, on 01/17/2008, -1/+4Honestly I see it as fair. Especially since you rent the movie and it can sit on your HD for 30 days. The 24 hour period is from when you first start watching the it. I always try to watch films in a single sitting. I really don't understand people that can watch a bit one day then some more the next... seems very strange to me.
- inactive, on 01/17/2008, -1/+4Hmm, and how does it know to do this without some sort of DRM?
- pen25, on 01/17/2008, -1/+4when did downloading a movie become cutting edge? or pioneering when i have been doing this for the last what almost 8 years?
- ferose333, on 01/17/2008, -0/+3Blu-ray's are supposed to look better that iTune movie rental.
- teh_techie, on 01/17/2008, -1/+4... all of A sudden ...
- pak314, on 01/17/2008, -0/+3I never understood that joke in the movie.
- Urkel, on 01/17/2008, -0/+3Let's get this straight. Apple (and it's fans) keep repeating "It just works" over and over. Yet when something doesn't "just work" then its the customers fault and they shouldn't be bitching or whining?
- mywhitenoise, on 01/17/2008, -0/+3I know about Otherworld Computing, I was making a point of ***** that's overpriced (No way in hell I'd buy extra hardware from Apple, I'd buy a bare bones MacPro).
And getting a new release DVD wont be $5, but you could wait a couple of months and get it on ebay or craigslist for that price...or you could just download a torrent. - teh_techie, on 01/17/2008, -0/+3iTunes HD would be 720p... Blu-Ray is 1080p.. so... ya
- teh_techie, on 01/17/2008, -0/+3That's not how it would work at all. The software wouldn't let you play it anymore. There are time limits.... once passed, the software says "NO! WE KNOW YOU'VE WATCHED IT ALREADY, AND CANNOT AGAIN!"
- carcrazy, on 01/17/2008, -0/+2I think DRM is necessary for this. What I want to know is, does the DRM make it impossible to burn to a DVD for viewing in a DVD player? I don't have a DVD burner so I can't try it out, but this is something that nobody seems interested in. If you get in onto a DVD, can it self-destruct? If not, then you can "rent" a movie for $2.99 and keep it with the rest of your DVD collection.
- Coug, on 01/17/2008, -0/+2amen to that.
- dhVyse, on 01/17/2008, -0/+2Any askmen article should get buried on the spot, in my opinion. Most ads on a site since IGN.
- beerbarron, on 01/17/2008, -0/+2I'm not really to worried about HD content on my pc or mac, it makes no real visual difference, unless your running through an HD screen.
- inactive, on 01/17/2008, -0/+2Welcome to the block list!
- mywhitenoise, on 01/17/2008, -0/+2If I don't like it, I sell the movie for close to what I paid for on ebay. I also have the advantage of ripping it(DVDs, I can't for blu-rays yet), lending it out to friends, watching it anytime and anywhere I want.
- diggmaddy, on 01/17/2008, -0/+2or high?
- flunky02038, on 01/17/2008, -1/+3So sitting in front of the TV playing Xbox or PS3 would not be considered lazy? And dont forget that the Xbox and PS3 are considerably more expensive than an Apple TV (for obvious reasons) and that games will add to the incremental cost, so all in all your comment is not at all helpful as its not a valid comparison.
- Aitese, on 01/17/2008, -0/+2Nothing can be transferred directly out of the ATV...it has to be synced to the PC first and then to iPod/iPhone. I assume if the rental can be sent back to PC it can then go on the current iPods/phone
- MxM111, on 01/17/2008, -0/+2I still can not understand, can SD or HD rental be transfered from ATV to PC and then on iPhone? Or can it be directly transfered from ATV to iPhone via PC/iTunes?
- briLo, on 01/17/2008, -0/+2Makes me love the 360/media center/external drive setup that much more. Downloads go directly to the external drive and can stream anywhere in the house....who pays $5 to rent a movie for 24 hours???!?! IDIOTS thats who!
- Urkel, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1It's a helpful list of things you "can" and "can't" do with rentals. But if you tossed in a column for bittorent then it would be all green.
In no possible way am I advocating stealing movies. My point is that it's tough for a customer to actually buy a product that comes with so many rules when a torrented file has no rules. - timdorr, on 01/17/2008, -1/+2It's not so much a problem that there is DRM at all, it's the restrictions in place with the DRM. I probably won't buy any rentals because of the 24 hour window. Why not extend it to 48 or 72 hours? I can very likely see the case where someone buys a movie at 9PM after putting the kids to bed, gets interrupted before they finish and doesn't have time to start watching again until after 9PM the next day. Kind of sucks, doesn't it? What are they going to lose by adding another day? Like Jobs says, most people only watch a movie once. So, they're not going to get any repeat business. They should be a little more accommodating about it.
- humperdeath, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1My head is spinning form all the rules. What did this chart say about transferring your purchased movies from AppleTV to a TiVo?
- MookiBlaylock, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1Confusing...lol.
- Spelvin, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1Yes, my XBMC plays a good majority of h.244 well without any transcoding. How well does your Apple TV play Divx and Xvid without transcoding?
- Urkel, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1It definitely is cool that the capability of watching a movie on an iPhone/iPod/Touch is there. But in all honesty, is anyone going to actually rent a movie and watch the whole thing on a microdevice?
In encoding my DVD's to iTunes I realized that when it comes to portable viewing then TV show reruns are the only thing I enjoy. Watching a movie I've never seen before or catching up with a new TV show on a 3" screen takes away a lot from the program. So I couldn't even imagine renting something for $4 and feeling the experience was worth it. (Thats my personal opinion. I apologize if it offends you) - agentVivid, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1if apple opened up their DRM and played nicely with others, you apple fanboys would surely have more movies to watch and transfer all over the place
- Blandyman, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1I got Rescue Dawn a month ago for $2.
- digjam, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1I m not saying playing xbox or ps3 isnt laziness... but my point was..
- To play video games you have no other alternatives either pc or xbox or ps3 or wii or whatever
- To watch movies... you have tons of options.. rent DVDs, Movies on Demand is available on almost all the cable/satellite options, download it from xbox,ps3 ( which can also play games) , download it to ur pc and stream it to your tv using xbox or ps3(xvid/divx support)....and many more.. you have so many options.. yet you want tp buy a device...which doesnt NOTHING BUT DOWNLOAD MOVIES AND STREAM IT FROM ITUNES. All I m asking is...ARE YOU GETTING YOUR MONEYS WORTH?...There are alternatives which cost you nothing...
Feel free to digg me down.. I dont care but the fact still remains... Do you really need a device so expensive ONLY to rent movies and stream movies? - lexbaby, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1"Do i have to have an apple tv to rent the movies and play them on my computer?" No, iTunes will do that.
"Stream them to my tv?" Yes, unless your TV is hooked up directly to your computer. - Zippo, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1considering that most Macs have a screen that's more than capable of displaying 720p (and that all Macs made in the last couple years are capable of doing video out to an HDTV), I'm really confused why you can't rent HD movies on iTunes... Hopefully Apple corrects this.
- johnpaul191, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1Drink more Brawndo and you'll be ok. It has electrolytes. It's what plants crave.
- Laxaloot, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1people who rent movies on the 360?
