- dcbebop, on 06/09/2008, -3/+43Palm a competitor? From 2001 to 2008 their shares have gone from 300 to almost 7 dollars. I'd call them a disaster, not a competitor.
- HookmasterCH47, on 06/09/2008, -4/+37What's good for Apple is bad for my wallet... :(
- dakbonsa, on 06/09/2008, -0/+22Why would I line up for a blackberry when my company just gives it to me?
People don't line up for a blackberry because corporation buys it hundreds of units at a time and distributes to their employees. - Snokage, on 06/09/2008, -10/+28that doesn't mean people aren't buying it.
apple owners line up for anything Jobs breathes on. - blorc, on 06/09/2008, -0/+14"The fact of the matter is this," said Pablo Perez-Fernandez, an analyst with Global Crown Capital. "There were a lot of BlackBerrys in those stores where iPhones were selling, and there were people who may not have thought about a smartphone before, wanted the iPhone, thought it was too expensive, and bought a BlackBerry instead."
This is an interesting observation, but if the predictions of a cheaper iPhone are true, will such a benefit be conferred upon RIM this time around? And if so, will it be as great of a degree? - codyman, on 06/09/2008, -9/+23If apple reduces the price (via rebate/promotion/contract/whatever), I can gurantee people will be lining up to get the next iPhone...
When Blackberry / RIM announce a new model and say it is launching on day xy, nobody lines up for it nor is there really a "rush" to go and grab it - Oogler, on 06/09/2008, -1/+13I do not have an iPhone. I have a BB cuz my Company makes me. I cannot imagine showing up at any store, as this article suggests, wanting to buy and iPhone and finding out there's a cheaper option called the Blackberry and thinking it's a viable option. If you're shopping iPhone you're getting iPhone.
The increase in BB sales is primarily due to the longer start and greater penetration of the device which has had years of almost unrivaled marketplace dominance.
I'm not saying BB is going down but to say that RIM and Palm are 'excited' or 'licking their chops' at the prospect of a new iPhone is a highly dubious suggestion. - dukeeeey, on 06/09/2008, -1/+13the iphone was a total flop in the uk
- inactive, on 06/09/2008, -0/+12They're right, it's all about the "look". Cool and sexy. There is nothing cool and sexy about a blackberry. Oh, and the "IS THAT AN iPHONE?" reaction that the phone still has.
(owner of first gen iPhone, lost it, replaced it with bberry 8820) - litolist, on 06/09/2008, -14/+25edit: nevermind, wrong thread
- damonic, on 06/09/2008, -0/+10There were no discounts on the first generation iPhone and people WERE lining up to get it...
- scottus0, on 06/09/2008, -5/+14What a terrible analogy.
- josephneaves, on 06/09/2008, -0/+9The "Wow is that an iPhone" factor is certainly a huge bonus for Apple. Its like 5 years ago when everyone was, "Wow, dude is that a RAZR?" If you have cool factor laced all over your product, you are made of win.

If you know of anymore, reply in the comments below. Hope the internet doesn't implode :) - digjam, on 06/09/2008, -0/+7Here's the theory thats causing RIM to take up the market share:
1. Apple has stimulated a smartphone Non Buyer into buying one.
2. He checks out his carriers store.
3a. IF its ATT, there are millions of other options like blackjack, MotoQ, BB Curve etc, which are selling on the side at around $99 in ATT store and for free at major retailers like Amazon etc. While iPhones are selling at ATT and Apple stores only and priced at $399-$499. More penetration in the market, more sales Simple!!!
3b. If the carrier is not ATT, they are simply screwed, unless they want to break the contract ($249) and buy a new phone ($499), which doesnt make financial sense, unless your dad is Rich.
4. So simply, a buyer ends up with either a MotoQ, Blackjack, RIM, or Palm or simply waits for his/her contract to be over with Tmobile or Verizon etc, or waits till the price drops.
The total control on the market is not doing any good for Apple, if they want to gain the market, sell more phones simple. The only way you can do that, is to flood the market without any restrictions.
The first spite of purchasers were all Apple fanboys and fangirls who simply do whatever Steve asks them to. So basically in first 6 months (Jun-Dec'07) most of the fans already bought all they could afford, therefore the sales dwindled in next 6 months (Jan - Jun'08)
Therefore RIM picked up sales, but if Apple reduces the price and make it more competetive, iPhone will turn out into ANOTHER PS3 for sure. - chumptronic, on 06/09/2008, -3/+10Sorry, but this is pretty shaky stuff. So one or two statistics, and some quotes from highly nervous Apple competitors, are the basis for a narrative that feels logically false, and isn't really supported by any anecdotal evidence? Does anyone know someone who said, Hey, the iPhone seems cool...I'm gonna get me a Blackberry! This sort of correlative journalism kind of gives the rest of us a bad name. This is a little like blaming the iPhone for the housing market collapse. Hey, they happened at around the same time, right?
- inactive, on 06/09/2008, -14/+21iPhone
- pabloD, on 06/09/2008, -1/+7Hm. Captain Obvious writing for Wired now? Good to know.
- chocobomog, on 06/09/2008, -1/+7And Apple nearly went bankrupt and was almost sold from 1991 to 1998 but people still called them a "competitor". Apple stock bought in the late 90's has grown 50x in the last decade. Companies can turn around.
If Apple's stock has taught us anything, now might be the time to by Palm stock so you can catch it on the rebound. - OpCzar, on 06/09/2008, -3/+9Wait, did you have the word iPhone in your comment? Dang, I just have to digg you up now.
- MikeSD34, on 06/09/2008, -5/+11I lined up for a Wii because it was the easiest and quickest way to get one. People line up for the iPhone for the same reason, they want one and ordering it online means waiting for it to be shipped. If there are more people who want something than there are sales people to provide it a line forms. There's nothing fanboyish about it, just a matter of supply and demand.
- HookmasterCH47, on 06/09/2008, -0/+6If I don't, how the hell am I supposed to feel superior to everyone else? My self esteem can't handle it. So to you sir, the answer is NO. I DO have to buy it.
- Ranvier, on 06/09/2008, -1/+7When you go to buy apple products at the Apple store, there aren't that many Apple stores to go to. When you go to a regular store, there's probably 10-100x as many stores carrying the item. Which do you think will form lines?
- MacParrot, on 06/09/2008, -0/+5Darn it! And I'm allergic to shellfish
- PabloMac, on 06/09/2008, -3/+8CoMpUtErITGuY, we understand your bias, considering the perpetual Windows issues and hassles represent your bread and butter, but please don't claim that any competing product is better until you have actually given those other solutions a real test drive. If you do, be prepared to switch.
- Ninjab3ar, on 06/09/2008, -5/+10Yeah, but despite the lining up, they didn't sell out... The truth is, Apple has the ability to create hype. Don't get me wrong, they're good and make nice products, but their fans overestimate everything they do, generating A LOT of hype.
- Ossuary, on 06/09/2008, -0/+5I stick by my comment of the best thing about the iPhone is that is caused other phone makers to wake up and at least TRY to innovate. They are finally catching on. Now to just do something about those damned carriers themselves...
- MikeSD34, on 06/09/2008, -2/+7@Murdats:
Lines don't form outside of stores for tissues because the supply is more then adequate to meet immediate demand. Though people do line up at cash registers in stores when buying tissues if the number of cashiers is less then the number of people who need to check out at any particular time.
@scottus0:
Constructive Criticism:
- I believe your analogy is flawed for reason 'X', it can be improved upon by modifying it like 'Y'.
Debate:
- I believe your analogy is incorrect because of 'X', a better analogy would be 'Y'.
Agree to disagree:
- I disagree with your analogy 'X', and prefer to think 'Y', because of 'Z'.
Digg:
- What a terrible analogy.

Personally, I'd probably rather have the iPhone than a BB -- but for corporate integration, the BlackBerry Enterprise Server makes setting up and managing the devices so easy. I think that's the area that Apple needs to target if they want to start pulling market share away from RIM.
- pilot101, on 06/09/2008, -6/+10seriously with the subsidy, iphone is going to be to be hard to beat.
- YeahMan, on 06/09/2008, -0/+4I love apple products, they are amazing and innovative...
That said, they're just too expensive for me. Being a college student, I can't afford to buy any apple products, especially now with the price of gas rising.
If Apple is successful right now, they can certainly afford to lower their price, and if they do they'll certainly see a surge in sales. - mooninite, on 06/09/2008, -0/+4Uhm..... #1 Nokia, #2 RIM, #3 Apple
Even though this link is for world stats (in b4 world stats) this goes for the US, too.

From an apple site no less! (and I'm not an apple fan, oooooh digg down coming *sigh*) - chocobomog, on 06/09/2008, -0/+4"RIM's market share of smartphones in the United States has actually swelled from 35 percent in the fourth quarter of 2007 to 45 percent in the first quarter of 2008."
You know, having people line up for your product is good and all (creates hype). But having your product increase marketshare and earn more money for the company is even better. Apple seems to be happy about the hype and devotion of its fans while their competitors are happy about the larger sales numbers of their products (excluding mp3 players). - Schmich, on 06/09/2008, -0/+4I have yet to see one in Switzerland and Sweden.
- Murdats, on 06/09/2008, -2/+6dont forget that apple has so far barely made a dent in either the phone, smartphone or pda industries
- subliminalurge, on 06/09/2008, -0/+3Many, many Apple announcements conclude with the phrase "And it's available starting today".
- KSUdesigner, on 06/09/2008, -0/+3The Apple store is always shutdown the day of a keynote.
- karan1003, on 06/09/2008, -0/+3Blackberry? a competitor? Anybody seriously considering a blackberry knows that the two have totally different purposes. The blackberry is a business phone - no ifs about it. The iphone, well, isn't.
- cjh79, on 06/09/2008, -0/+3That's exactly how it happened for me. Saw iPhone, thought it was cool, decided to compare it against other smartphones, ended up deciding the BB curve was the much better option for me. And much, much less expensive.
But if it wasn't for the iphone piquing my interest in having a does-it-all device, I am quite sure I wouldn't have even started considering smartphones. - MacParrot, on 06/09/2008, -0/+3It DOES look tasty! :)
- Murdats, on 06/09/2008, -0/+3but this is an apple shellfish
sure it may kill you, but dude, its apple, how awesome is that prawn. - staxofmax, on 06/09/2008, -0/+3My cell phone contract is up this month and I was considering replacing my old cell phone with an iPhone thinking that it was unique in its capabilities. However, I shopped around and found the BlackBerry 8820 on Amazon for $150 with a two year service contract w/T-Mobile. It may not have the same asthetic appeal as the iPhone, but it syncs with Outlook, is compatible with Microsoft Exchange Server, has a GPS receiver, a qwerty keyboard, and is $250 cheaper.
If not for the exposure the iPhone has received I probably wouldn't have even considered a smartphone. But the fact is there are many iPhone competitors out there, some of which even surpass the iPhone in some capabilities. - nedy78, on 06/09/2008, -0/+3The UK is hardcore supreme!
- Greg2k, on 06/09/2008, -1/+4You sneaky bastard! Because you used the word iPhone in YOUR comment now I have to digg YOU up!!
