Cheap??? This is Apple we're talking about right? - DavidTurnbull, on 05/26/2009, -21/+45The Pre has no chance against the iPhone.
- thelastcivilian, on 05/26/2009, -3/+26When commenting on someone else's poor grammar, it is generally best to be careful with your own.
So... *whose - pyromcr, on 05/25/2009, -5/+27we all know there is going to be a new iphone, but i really want to see a tablet and maybe a netbook...
- chuckerton, on 05/25/2009, -2/+23Not a single mention of Apple Pro Apps? It seem that Final Cut Studio has been completely marginalized within the company instead of holding fast to its once lofty flagship status. They didn't even bother with NAB the past two years.
Sigh. - DavidTurnbull, on 05/26/2009, -1/+21The first half of June is such a good time of the year. E3 and WWDC.
- woofers07, on 05/26/2009, -6/+25Worst written article ever.
"Most probably..."
"...which is a retarded notion at best"
"It may not be carved out of a single piece of aluminum, but there's no need for that."
seriously... - mikeruiz7, on 05/26/2009, -0/+17Sorry, but I don't think a netbook keyboard is comparable to a touchscreen keyboard. There's a lot of tactile feedback required in keyboard typing, and it's really unlikely that I'll take notes in class or write papers on a touchscreen. Which is, after all, what they're going to aim for since e-mail and web surfing functionality is already on the iphone, and it just wouldn't make sense to release what essentially is a big iPhone.
Also, not all netbooks have ugly keyboards, for instance the HP mini http://www.hp.com/united-states/campaigns/mini1000 ...
Believe me, I'd LOVE to see a cute little mac netbook, and it very well may be a tablet, but I think majority of netbook users are either students or businessmen who move around a lot. Think they're gonna lug a keyboard around like the thumbnail portrays?
While the iPhone keyboard behaves better than any other handheld (even QWERTY blackberries), I really don't think it'd work on a large scale.
Thank you for reading this really long post. Party on. - eviltrunkz, on 05/26/2009, -1/+15that last bit about the "one more thing" was a nice touch. I hope Steve is doing well.
- Charlotte_Web, on 05/26/2009, -1/+15Apple doesn't like to cut prices. They introduce speed-bumped systems to replace the systems they age out.
- mrblaack, on 05/26/2009, -9/+21how about a price cut? That would be new for Apple.
- leetninja, on 05/26/2009, -2/+13well maybe you should spend more time in the kitchen and less time flapping your gums ...
- ultrafez, on 05/26/2009, -1/+11Apple's netbook would never be affordable for what it is though, let's face it.
- DavidTurnbull, on 05/26/2009, -0/+10Support for bluetooth keyboards is what the iPhone needs.
- godinster, on 05/26/2009, -1/+11You're the epitome of overreacting.
Way too much effort in your post, he's just trolling you dude. - inactive, on 05/26/2009, -1/+10He probably dictated it; plus, he's probably 8.
- Jaime2000, on 05/26/2009, -3/+12They mean "Apple" cheap... so figure a little less than twice what competing devices cost.
- handheldchimp, on 05/26/2009, -3/+12Adding a tactile keyboard would defeat the purpose of an iPhone. The iPhone obviously isn't for you.
- InorganicMatter, on 05/26/2009, -2/+10Please Apple, make my year and release a real tablet that runs a full OS and isn't just a slightly larger iPhone.
- stealthboy, on 05/26/2009, -1/+9Do you honestly think people shop for mobile phones by processor speed?
- wild, on 05/26/2009, -1/+9We're in an age where processing power isn't the first thing people think about when buying a computer. And especially a phone.
Software and OS design are running the show now. - yabos, on 05/26/2009, -0/+8Well we all know Quicktime X is coming in Snow Leopard. It will no doubt be required for the new pro apps so my guess is that after Snow Leopard comes the new pro apps with improved performance from Quicktime X.
- dagamer34, on 05/26/2009, -5/+12Because no one really expects Pro Apps to be announced at a DEVELOPER conference. Besides, updates to Pro Apps warrant their own special event, especially if software like Final Cut Pro and Studio show MASSIVE improvements when they take advantage of Snow Leopard technology.
- SteveIsTheDude, on 05/26/2009, -5/+12No way they are adding a keyboard... They are the only player that gets touch screen right, that is what makes them the leader....
- TechEvil, on 05/26/2009, -5/+12"An Apple tablet will basically be a bigger iPhone that will serve as a casual and cheap computing device, confronting the netbook market with a nimbler, less cramped, and not-fugly device."
..."cheap" computing device. I love apple, but nothing they sell is remotely cheap. - Charlotte_Web, on 05/26/2009, -0/+7Video is still a huge part of Apple's strategy. Look at what they are doing to Adobe -- trying to shut the door on Flash, offering QuickTime and Javascript as replacement technologies. They absolutely hate that Flash is a universal video wrapper; it's a religious war to them.
With the fight intensifying between Apple and Adobe, it would be foolish of them to let FCP wither on the vine. - skoober, on 05/26/2009, -0/+6Wat about us developers that develop for the Pro Apps?
- macslut, on 05/26/2009, -0/+6WW->D<-C
Take a guess what D stands for?
Hint: It's not a media, broadcast or even a software conference.
Apple has never announced anything related to Final Cut Studio at the WWDC. If you take a look at the major releases of Final Cut Pro, they've all been at around 2 year intervals, except for version 2 ->3.
iPhones and iPods aren't holding back a new release of Final Cut Studio, but rather Snow Leopard needs to come out first. - krisrm, on 05/26/2009, -4/+9"an iPhone OS-based tablet is something that could work better than netbooks"
...explain to me how a device running a locked down operating system and with no keyboard to speak of is going to outperform today's netbooks at simple things like typing and web surfing on sites with content that may require certain plugins (*ahem* Flash *ahem*!)? The "experiment" posted on Gizmodo was absolutely ridiculous, and besides, the keyboards on the Eee PCs are rather lame to begin with. Even if Apple *did* use a more flexible operating system (and the ability to replace it with another), and somehow managed to make a magical software keyboard that works just as well as that of any regular netbook keyboard, there's no way they'd set the price at anything below unreasonable... - FredFredrickson, on 05/26/2009, -0/+5Predictions:
- Minor upgrades to Mac line
- Show off iPhone X.0 OS
- No price cuts
- A bunch of people losing money on stocks after people short sell them
- Lines of idiots paying too much money for computers they don't need - Fubeman, on 05/26/2009, -2/+7You want an Apple tablet, here you go:
http://www.macmod.com/external-mods/macbook/1577-i ...
This guy modded the whole thing himself, built on top of a MacBook. I have seen some other pics and a video of this on "the Internets" but can't remember where. Pretty sweet. - jimmypopjr, on 05/26/2009, -0/+4I love Apple, but I gotta agree with this. Their idea of affordable is the mini... and that's not a lot of bang for your buck specs-wise. Then again, aesthetics>specs for Apple a lot of the time. I'd love to see an Apple tablet/media pad/netbook/whatever... but I just wouldn't want it at the Apple price point.
- MindStalker, on 05/26/2009, -0/+3I could see apple producing a $199 or $299 netbook WITH contract though.
- bloominoctober, on 05/26/2009, -1/+4"Specially"
- AaronPDX, on 05/26/2009, -1/+4Thank you. Glad I'm not the only one. This was driving me INSANE.
- Palaceguard, on 05/26/2009, -0/+3Flash
- znicket, on 05/26/2009, -1/+4I´m a businessman and I have totally abandoned my laptop when I travel. Most of my travel usage consists of sending emails and keeping track of what is going on in the company. Usually 1 or 2 liner emails are enough - acknowledgments and short instructions, you are traveling after all.
I use my Ipod Touch for the purpose. - inactive, on 05/26/2009, -2/+5Yay!
- inactive, on 05/26/2009, -8/+11I hate cooking.
- andrewerin, on 05/26/2009, -0/+3I appreciate that this doesn't contain all the bs dreams that are all over the place.
- P373Y, on 05/26/2009, -0/+3why dont you just do it yourself?
- mrBitch, on 05/26/2009, -0/+3...strangely enough, the new iPhone OS 3 api additions specifically open up bluetooth (and wireless) to allow the iPhone to connect to hardware such as printers, keyboards, etc...
- LumpOfCole, on 05/26/2009, -1/+3Why would anyone want an Apple netbook? The top reason to get a netbook is the super low price, and Apple is known for a lot of great things but not super low prices.
- Tehrab, on 05/26/2009, -0/+2macslut nailed it. Why develop new processing software when your OS is undergoing heavy performance modifications such as is happening in Snow Leopard.
Hell, Apple just put out the API freeze for Snow Leopard so I would be willing to bet that new versions of the Pro Apps are probably just now germinating in the minds of their developers as they begin to grok the implications of the new tools at their disposal. - jj101, on 05/26/2009, -0/+2There are proapps updates coming soon - my money says June. I know several people who have beta copies of FCP from the new studio package - not the whole deal just elements. I think Yabos is right about Quicktime X. I heard rumours of a Snow Leopard only version of studio. Its possible - and I hope true - that FCP has been completely rewritten.
- 5hocker, on 05/26/2009, -8/+10The iPhone had better have a better processor
http://www.9to5mac.com/iphone-arm-cortex-a8
if it wants to slam the Pre
http://blogs.computerworld.com/palm_pres_processor ... - mrBitch, on 05/27/2009, -0/+2RE: ".. I'd love to see an Apple tablet/media pad/netbook/whatever... but I just wouldn't want it at the Apple price point."
I think you are missing a critical point here.
If Apple were to release a "netbook" type touch tablet that runs the iPhone OS, why wouldn't they offer it on a Mobile Phone Carrier subsidy basis?
Can you see how the price of that touch tablet device would suddenly look more like the cost of the current iPhone ? - skoober, on 05/26/2009, -1/+3i got it
i dugg you up
them fewls - ethana2, on 05/26/2009, -1/+3Come on, Dell. Put Ubuntu on the Latitude XT.
- stalky14, on 05/26/2009, -0/+2I'm pretty sure all we're going to see are spec-bumps across the board:
iPhoneOS 3.0
More Snow Leopard demos, 64-bit.
More flash in the Phone/Touch and maybe faster CPU's.
Some unremarkable Mac hardware spec-bumps.
Outside chance:
A solid-state iPod Classic or a hard disk-based Touch replacing it.
The reason I say this is because I think they see the iPhone/iPod Touch apps market as their best growth sector within the iTunes Store. They'll want to expand this market as much as possible.
