- LuxuryisGreat, on 06/15/2009, -5/+52I love my Iphone. I would not have any other phone but AT&T service is horrible. Their slogan "fewest dropped calls" I always wondered where they took that statistic from. My guess is that they were at an AT&T facility and took a poll and that is where they came up with that statistic/slogan. Iphone Best Phone/AT&T worst Service. Goes together like chocolate and salad (something like that)
- kooredaan, on 06/16/2009, -1/+39Grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.
- gALEXy, on 06/16/2009, -1/+30I would be more concerned about the iphone's features competing with all the extra bells and whistles verizon wants you to pay for - $10 a month or so for their gps maps, and their vcast stuff as well. I think they see the Iphone as being a threat to their business model. Additionally, I just cant picture anyone buying an Iphone with google maps and itunes being disabled, in favor of the verizon pay services, now thats a step backwards.
- jordanlgta, on 06/16/2009, -1/+30I'd like to get two iPhone's side by side in a video, one using Verizon and one using AT&T. Try to load the same page at the same time, and let's see who wins.
- dekuscrub, on 06/16/2009, -1/+29I really don't like Verizon as a company ... but their network/signal strength is second to none.
- Hawaiianteg, on 06/16/2009, -6/+31How come no one every talks about why verizon was stupid to turn it down?? They went with AT&T cause everyone else turned their nose at us. Now its apples fault they went with AT&T??? They are the only ones that gave Apple a chance. At least they had the balls to do so.
- AceyS, on 06/16/2009, -0/+20My biggest beef isn't so much with their company as a whole, it's more how they cripple every damn phone with their software. Unless you plunge for a smartphone, every phone - no matter how many screens or keyboards - is going to function exactly the same with their craptastic OS. And no in this case consistency is not a good thing. Who cares if everyone phone functions the same way; People only own one phone!
- BenRoth, on 06/16/2009, -4/+22"Except that the iPhone uses GSM and thus cannot be used on the Verizon network."
Did you *read* the article? - Ocelot13, on 06/16/2009, -0/+18unless you live in us... cause it sure as hell isnt greener in mexico.
- Ocelot13, on 06/16/2009, -3/+19i didnt know any product called an itouch was ever made. or do you mean an iPod Touch?
you dont call an ipod nano an inano, or a ipod shuffle an ishuffle. same concept people. - AresDiggs, on 06/16/2009, -0/+13But would it be better than AT&T?
- TexasShiv, on 06/16/2009, -0/+13Good thing you mindlessly buy shiny products for their "look at me" appeal.
And yes, you're a fan boy. - SPNKrPunk, on 06/16/2009, -0/+12What's the assumption here? That Verizon will be leaps and bounds better than AT&T? Oh I think not, sir.
I remember a flap a few years ago where Verizon would sell bluetooth phones that were capable of playing custom ringtones and media, but disabled BT file transfer so you would have to use their network to transfer your content over to the phone. At cost to you, of course.
Remember this: all cellular companies are more than willing to screw you. Competition is the only thing that keeps them in line. - youareretarded, on 06/16/2009, -3/+14CDMA isn't necessarily old technology (it's actually newer than GSM) its just that its not as universal or used as much as GSM is.
- l800LEMMINGS, on 06/16/2009, -3/+14i think the more bars in more places is *****, i usually have good reception but a lot of times when i don't have service, it says i have 5 bars. I'm surprised that there hasn't been a class action lawsuit to apple and at&t on this matter.
Furthermore original iphone 3g customers had really bad reception at first until an "update" through apple "fixing" the problem. I haven't noticed much of a difference, besides the false bars. - MScrip, on 06/16/2009, -0/+10CDMA and GSM are both "past" technologies if you wanna get technical. They will both be replaced by something else in a couple years.
So should Apple stop making GSM phones now? Or Verizon stop making CDMA phones now?
And if we're talking about right now... I'd take Verizon's EVDO data network over AT&T's data network any day. - ShrimpCrackers, on 06/16/2009, -0/+9They probably saw the Motorolla "iPod phone" and laughed. Remember that one?
- atish505, on 06/16/2009, -0/+8CDMA is dead.
Apple did the right thing by making a GSM phone. GSM and related technologies now occupy 90% plus handset market.
Had Apple made a CDMA phone it would not have been able to target markets outside USA unless it had a GSM version as well. - commyostrich, on 06/16/2009, -3/+11Personally, I hate that Verizon puts their own crappy OS on most of their phones that cripples the phone more than ATT's branding does to phones. At least you can debrand/unlock any phone that's on the ATT network. Most times they are faster and more reliable once you do that. Now who's to say what the heck Verizon would've done with the iPhone.
But that's my opinion. And I've had great reception and calls with ATT during my 5 years with them and the HSDPA on my Sony w760i debranded is pretty dang fast wherever I am. - atish505, on 06/16/2009, -1/+7CDMA is dead. GSM technologies including UTMS, WCDMA, HSDPA (3.5 g) and LTE now control 90% plus market share.

Networks around the world continue to switch form CDMA to GSM. Reliance and Tata Teleservices (two of the world's largest networks have started GSM services with billions of dollars in investment.
NTT Docomo in Japan has rolled out and switching users to GSM.
It is just plain stupid to build a CDMA phone, never mind of Verizon is on it. - NAT1V3, on 06/16/2009, -0/+6They used a mobile wireless card/router that uses Verizon's network and put the iPhone in wi-fi.
- AresDiggs, on 06/16/2009, -0/+5You best be trolling
- AresDiggs, on 06/16/2009, -4/+9CDMA is not the past.. Sure most of the globe uses GSM but that does not make it better... For one CDMA is more secure... Either way you can't argue that verizon does not have the best coverage and network (they have some ***** phones tho - im looking at you BB storm)
- AresDiggs, on 06/16/2009, -0/+5No but i can see it
- inactive, on 06/16/2009, -0/+5Hey there...original owner of one of the first Motorola flips to have bluetooth. There was a class action lawsuit that I got lumped into because they originally advertised the phone as "Fully Bluetooth" compatible, which it wasn't. They removed file transfers, tethering, and anything that would have cut into their precious services.
- astrixx, on 06/16/2009, -1/+5I'm canceling my verizon contract this week for the iphone 3G S. Im sick of verizon's greediness.
- nicc, on 06/16/2009, -0/+4@mrspontaneous: regarding the Storm -
the BB maps app with GPS is a per month charge over and above your voice/data plan.
Verizon visual voicemail? another per month charge on top of everything else.
that said, the Storm is Verizons least crippled phone...
(I manage the Verizon cell contract for my office) - kelly, on 06/16/2009, -3/+7It must be a location thing because my AT&T service works great. I never got a dropped call except on this one spot on the freeway (every single time) but that was years ago. Within the past year and a half the service has been great.
I live in Phoenix Arizona - nsingapu, on 06/16/2009, -3/+7I have been an AT&T wireless customer (and prior to that a cingular customer) for about 5 years. Though they have pissed me off a few times in general I have found their customer service level to not necessitate communication with the BBB, PUC, and/or FCC.
I was a verizon customer for about two years. There were some issues after I canceled service that caused me to get in touch will all the aforementioned agencies; through this process I discovered that their customer service is rather abhorrent. In particular (according to online annicdotes) their landline, dsl, long distance, cellular, and fios branches are independent and often don't communicate well internally so for instance a customer might pay a final bill and then get refunded by one branch only to be billed the same amount by another.
Because of my experiences with verizon and their unwillingness / inability to resolve a seemingly simple complaint I simply wont do business with them in the future. - suprememilo, on 06/16/2009, -0/+4AT-AT&T?
- fuxxx, on 06/16/2009, -1/+5It's not really about rights, it's about technology.
Stupid American telcos use CDMA, when the rest of the world uses GSM and UMTS. The exceptions being AT&T and T-Mobile (as far as I know), and I'm sure AT&T are the better option of the two as far as nationwide coverage is concerned.
Verizon is actually part owned by Vodafone, who are an Apple approved network for many countries around the world, so there are no inherent problems with using Verizon from a business perspective.
You also have to keep in mind Apple actually first agreed to use Cingular, not AT&T. It's just that AT&T bought Cingular before the iPhone went on the market, so Apple had to continue the relationship. - Chadykz, on 06/16/2009, -2/+6eventually in america they'll sell the rights to both telcos
- nicc, on 06/16/2009, -0/+3he was talking about Canada...
- Wootstapler, on 06/16/2009, -2/+5*whoosh*
- MMaster23, on 06/16/2009, -2/+5"......but performance was often - but not always - noticeably slower on AT&T's network....."
Yes because you can really feel the difference between 1.37 and 1.49 mbit/s! - Konrad9, on 06/16/2009, -0/+3When they DID? They still do.
The ONLY thing you can transfer over bluetooth on a Verizon phone is pictures, and even that is a hassle. - mbhakti, on 06/16/2009, -7/+10Verizon may have better coverage on the east coast, but AT&T has been much better in my area on the west coast.
- kkiran, on 06/16/2009, -0/+3Welcome to the world of ATT greediness then! Sprint is comparatively less greedier IMO!
- robdiggity, on 06/16/2009, -2/+5Hahahahaha "signal strength!" It's fun to watch you guys sometimes. It's like Sea Monkeys!
You know the carriers can (and do!) make those little bars on your mobile phone say whatever we want, right? - superkendall, on 06/16/2009, -2/+5Yes I read the article. But it's an invalid test to try going over WiFi and THEN Verizon vs. just going over Verizon - for one thing something like a MiFi or any other cell WiFi solution is bulkier with more power, and thus can have a much better signal advantage over a portable device built to compromise signal strength with battery life and portability.
Then of course there's extra latency from going over WiFi to a cell network vs. just the cell network...
I guess I can forgive you guys for not really thinking through the technical validity of the comparison, this is Digg after all and you are probably both eight years old and haven't really had much practical experience with real world consumer electronics yet. I hope you learned a valuable lesson today about knowing something before you speak up with criticism. - inactive, on 06/16/2009, -0/+3They did for the Blackberry. I wanted an iPhone but I was with Verizon so I went to see if I could find something comparable. (this was last year before the 3g release) I asked about them at a store and they showed them to me. I knew that they had Blackberry Maps which was at least something like the maps on my iphone so I asked where it was, the guy piped up that they replaced it with VZ Navigator. I said "the service that costs $9 for each use or $25 a month?" "Yes that one." Then I asked about the data plan at which point I dropped the phone and allowed it to snap back into it's place via its little tether. "I'm going to get an iPhone. Thanks for showing me Verizon is still a money grubbing bastard of a company."
- atish505, on 06/16/2009, -0/+3End of CDMA.
http://www.mobilemonday.net/news/gsm-camp-gains-fu ... - tech9, on 06/16/2009, -0/+3mifi seemed really cool until I read the last paragraph. bleh...
- MScrip, on 06/16/2009, -0/+3Hopefully Verizon wouldn't be so dumb as to strip out the major features of the iPhone. Verizon wants to get back the people who left them for AT&T... and get the remaining 80,000,000 Verizon customers using an iPhone.
Didn't we just hear about iTunes becoming the largest music retailer in the US? Where does VCast rank on the list of digital music download services? - iChopPryde, on 06/16/2009, -2/+5I was in Phoenix not long ago the weather is so nice there ^_^
- ShrimpCrackers, on 06/16/2009, -0/+2Silly guy, AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile all share a 4-5 gig cap on their "unlimited wireless internet" and they all charge ***** rates around $50-60 for stand alone devices.
In other countries like Taiwan, a true unlimited data plan goes for about $30 USD and a multi gig cap can be had for half that. - robdiggity, on 06/16/2009, -0/+2Yeah no, CDMA is not dead. Ask China. Ask Brazil. There is a ton of addressable market being served by CDMA. Ask Samsung. Ask LG. It is most definitely not plain stupid to make CDMA devices, it is a multi-multi-billion dollar business.
But of course you know this. Is it that you think easily displacing market share from a multi-billion dollar pool is stupid? - ethanji22, on 06/16/2009, -0/+2If you look at each technology in depth you will see that CDMA is actually the better technology for upgrading to 4G technologies. GSM is limited in the next steps to higher capacity levels (need more money to invest in new towers). On the other hand CDMA needs less of a change out on their towers to upgrade to the next generation technology (LTE and WiMax). This will give Verizon and Sprint a competitive advantage in upgrading their speed in the future because it is less of an new investment. GSM can be used around the world, but it doesn't mean that it is any better. They are essentially the same except the future investment will be less costly on CDMA towers.
- SteveMax, on 06/16/2009, -0/+2Actually, even Verizon is switching to a GSM-based technology (LTE) for its 4G network. The CDMA-based 4G technology (called UMB) is now very dead and buried: nobody will deploy it, so development has stopped. The biggest investor in the CDMA technologies, Qualcomm, is now helping LTE development. 3G/EVDO will be the last CDMA technology to be deployed anywhere.
- Elranzer, on 06/16/2009, -0/+2Except Japan uses CDMA as well, and their networks are 10x more advanced than Europe, Australia and anyone else who uses GSM.
Also, SBC already merged with AT&T before the iPhone was even demonstrated, let alone before Apple made commitments. -
