- mke01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2second sentence: This series will start off with an unbiased, alternate history in which Microsoft doesn’t rise to power.
first conclusion: Microsoft is a necessary evil that should be tolerated and forgiven because of all the good it has done.
not sure if the rest of the article is worth reading, i stopped reading as soon as the bias showed up. obviously applematters.com is going to be biased, but if they're not even going to take the time to hide it, then i'm not going to take the time to read it. - crpietschmann, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"For one thing, Apple wouldn't exist. Microsoft was the PRIMARY vendor of software for the Mac for MANY years.
Nobody would have used Macs if they couldn't run the same programs that PCs had."
You're not thinking about the big picture. Without DOS and Microsoft people wouldn't have been using PC's anyway. - Kaspar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What's the point of that article? Microsoft DOES exists heh
no digg - amcluesent, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Let's speculate on what would have happened if Intel had never existed. Oh yeah, we'd have had a clean 32-bit PC architecture since the 1979 when the 68000 was shipped, instead of years of 'himem' and segmented lameness from 8086 80286, 80386 CPU and all the programming bugs those horros created.
- artman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If Windows did not exist I would have had to get an Apple computer back in 1990 (started late) and that would have been impossible because they were way to expensive. I bought a Tandy 3200 (?) because it was cheap and avaialable (Macs weren't easy to find then either or I just didn't know where to get one then). I don't think one can conceptualize "if Windows didn't exist". You can make assumptions but that's it. Even though I DNRTFA (link's dead), this is probably another wet dream from a Mac fanatic writer.
Ironically, I don't own a Windows computer (at work is a different story) now, I own a Mac and have had Macs since 1997.

- julesac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Who doesn't love bright shiny things? =)
- Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3it's sad these kind of stories make digg. one of the down sides of user submitted stories
- cwcentral, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1We would all be connected to some UNIX virtual terminal. Apollo computers would still exist. Security would be a non-issue. Games would be more interesting. Lotus would still exist and ccMail would rule (Yes, Apple only survived back then because of MS Word/Excel on Mac, period).
Also, every common person would know 'vi' by now! - letmereplynow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think it would have horrible for computers. Not only would have Apple crippled innovation because they love to control their own hardware, software plus the fact that the price would have no punctured the demographics it has. But by now, apple would have been split for it monopolitics practices or forced to open up it's hardware and software.
- coldcoffee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What if hot dogs grew on trees?
- akwebb1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Then people would have to hate Apple.

Was it John Dvorak on TWiT who said something like "Every Mac owner has a blog where they talk about their Mac". - HarryBauzonia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If Microsoft had never existed, Linux either wouldn't exist or it wouldn't be user-friendly.
I prefer to use Linux instead of Windows. But it's pretty obvious to me that the reason it's now a hot and easy to use OS is because its developers are competing with the usability of Windows.
If MS hadn't made the IBM standard a de facto standard, we'd be paying $4000 to $5000 for completely locked down hardware and software.
Thanks for that Bill. - TheNik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1We'd all be gay, celebate, or people that don't use computers. :/

http://digg.com/hardware
http://digg.com/gaming - dwhitbeck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If Microsoft had never existed, we would be 10 years further along in operating systems. There were better more advanced operating systems years before Microsoft. Examples:
Amiga , buggy but a GUI environment in 1985.
Beos
OS9
Unix
Instead we went through MSDOS, windows 3.1, into windows 95 before achieving something as advanced as Amiga. - VSLOATHE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"I'd like to see "What if Apple Never Existed""
30 billion annoying kids and yuppies wouldn't have their trendy iPods. Other than that...it's like the old 'if a tree falls in the woods, and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?' question.
Basically, those of us who know how to use a computer still would be, the crapple fanbois would be SoL. (p.s. I have a couple macs and they're fine computers, but they're no better or worse than PCs, especially running Linux) - solarchaos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'd like to see "What if Apple Never Existed"
- dalle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Think if MS would've use the same business "politics" as apple, and MS was as big as they are today.. We "all" would be using non-upgradable MS computers with MS OS (win), MS mouse, keyboard, speakers, wavelan, mp3(*)player (of course only syncable with some crappy MS software) and you know the drill. Hell, if Steve Jobs would run a country, it would be worse then any random communist place.
* mpeg layer 3 probably would be banned and we'd all use wma with MS' super good DRM! Because that is what users want! - oriface, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Amiga would be ruling the world and we would be 20 years ahead in graphics and sound.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3"I think if Apple had 95% market share, i'm sure they wouldn't have the constant drive to push the envelope and inovate."
Can you give one example of how Apple "innovates"?
They didn't invent the gui, they didn't invent anything except for Firewire (big whoop).
Throughout history they've taken other people's inventions and re-packaged them. - shadedream, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"What if Apple Didn't Exist
ummm....nothing?"
Ever used Win3.1? While Apple pulled from Microsoft, Microsoft pulled a LOT from Apple (and still does). - GLSmyth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0As one who remembers going into the software store in the early 80's, I can tell you that things would probably still be fragmented with a dozen operating systems. I would enter looking for TI software and have to wander through the Amiga, Atari, Sinclair and other miscellaneous brands. As one who is not exactly a cheerleader for Microsoft, I would have to admit that they unified things under a single banner. This allowed for the proliferation of Linux, due to the similarity of architecture (which we think of as common these days).
- RickySan65, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What if, could have, I wish and if only, all terms for things that didn't quite happen. or didn't happen in the way intended. So why fret over them. Microsoft does exist, Appled exists and has a certain marketshare.. deal with it!
- ineedunderscore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"After all, if the auto industry were organized like the computer industry then we would all be driving Fords, getting 9 miles per gallon of gas, with no air bags, and the basic design of the car wouldn’t have changed for the last 30 years."
uh.

pulse controlled fuel injection has been around since the seventies.
amiga had a gui that was more user friendly than win98. one of my clients runs win 3.11 and xywrite for dos to write million dollar publications of her cookbook series. it boots faster than my new system. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Honestly, I think if microsoft (and/or equivalent) had not existed, hard drive and memory capacities would've been set back a few years due to lack of demand. Many thing would not be developed (as they are now) due to lack of market pressures.
*shrugs* - starmanjones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0>Years ago Apple made a big mistake with their arrogance about corporate data.
>They thought no-one wanted to share data across networks.
um... you forgot that there has never been a Mac made without networking built in. they knew they would want to share data. where does this crazy ***** get started? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Years ago Apple made a big mistake with their arrogance about corporate data. They thought no-one wanted to share data across networks. Their motto on the first MAC was one person-one computer. They didn't even believe in hard-drives. If it weren't for Microsoft, someone else would have stepped up, but Apple would still be behind.
Now of course, they have their head on straight and they are by far thebest overall platform out there.

->learn to spell - mancat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Ever used Win3.1? While Apple pulled from Microsoft, Microsoft pulled a LOT from Apple (and still does)."
Sorry, but Windows 3.x had very little in common with MacOS/System, besides the fact that they were both equally unstable and unreliable, though even Windows 3.x was less likely to completely crash when an application did something dumb. Nine times out of ten when you got an application error on MacOS Classic, it was a bomb. Reboot.
I think I would pose the question, have YOU ever used Windows 3.1? - dvdcr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0digg probably has an apple section because the owner (KR) is an apple fanboy as well
- NJank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Does anyone know what the promotion threshold is?"
it's not a digg threshold as much as a digg-rate threshold. - MattS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0digg effect.
- bigredgpk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What if this website slowed to a crawl?
I hate dwelling on the past. MS is here for better or for worst and that's that...
Timmay - iSEPIC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree with several comments above, if MS didn't exist, we'd be (still) paying 4000-5000 for a locked in hardware. Anyone remember not too long ago, you HAD to use APPLE branded hardware, now you can use PCI / AGP graphics cards, HP printers, and any 'old usb mouse/keyboard (except the MS one with fingerprint reader, that will kill a mac upon boot-up).. .but anyway, you get the idea. (oh yeah, this comment was Apple flavored, because, well the article was Apple flavored).
- darrenford, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wasn't this a Star-Trek episode? Surely this realty exists on some distant, otherwise uninteresting, class M planet.
- Digg32539, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Digg Efect :/
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What if? I've got a great What if...
What if, people just collectively stopped posting any crappy Mac vs. Windows-based stories that are nothing more than launching pads for the continuing fan boy debate?
Well, we'd probably be left with Firefly stories, Umbunto Linux stories, Ruby on Rails stories, with the occational "Guy builds robot out of condom machine"... - deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Can't read the article since it's DOA but I can speculate that without Microsoft we'd have a more fragmented computing world which would probably benifit the customer in the end. Eventually everyone would have to agree to standard file formats and standardized hardware with better documentation. We'd probably have 4-5 operating systems and 2-3 platforms -- all competing with each other and improving on a regular basis (unlike the 5-6 year Windows release cycle)
- Simen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If Microsoft didn't exit there would be some other big corp....like Macrohard or something.
- DennyCrane, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0solarchaos "I'd like to see What if Apple Never Existed"
Would anyone really notice a difference, I doubt it. - shadedream, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Apple never would have made it! They are too focused on PRETTY PRETTY MAC! lol for all you apple humpers ahhaahahahhah!"
Were any of these people alive before the iMac? esh... - Simen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0EXIST!
- Septimus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Can't get to it, but guessing from the url, they say everything would be fantastic with nothing ever crashing and no viruses would exist, only fluffy bunnies and kittens?
- danjal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0thats a good point.. why is there no windows... i mean they have apple and linux/unix...
