- sleepwalkers, on 10/12/2007, -8/+25Dude, I'm an OS X user and I even know you're what... 5-6 years behind the times now? XP and BSOD don't really even go together.
I realize it was supposed to be funny...
But... It wasn't. - RedLion, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22schestowitz: after reading your yesterday's comment, yeah, that ridicolous comment about "M$ paying his army of shills to disrupt what you people like yourself do... express their love for freedom" I was expecting to see some "love for freedom" in your comments, but, like usual, all I see in your comments is "love for trolling".
- jmaynardg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Hold down Command-S as the system starts and you too can watch the dmesg log as it's being generated.
- adstretch, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14@cybermort
come off it. the over-priced argument against the mac is as out dated as the BSOD argument against Windows, if you're going to make a negative statement against the mac (or windows) at least pick something that is currently relevant.

- ricksite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I haven't been very interested in the boot process of Mac OS X because I don't have to boot it very often. I can't say that for the Mac OS 9 days and earlier.
- chance2002iu, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12"You turn on your Mac, and this is what happens:
* Power is turned on."
I got this far and thought the next bullet points would be
* ????
* Profit
Seriously though, it was interesting. - macbookpromat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Oh the irony, I have already caused an XP BSOD on my Mac. I nearly ***** myself. Lesson to be learned here, drivers can definitely ***** up your Windows if done wrong.
As for the article, thank you. Now I know which file is the bootloader screen. Now if I could only modify it to get my Windows icon. - simpleid, on 10/12/2007, -12/+20The rat wheel lead to a funny start...
But I have to confess; the blue screen of death reference is completely dead. I haven't seen BSoD in a clear 3 years, the last time I can actually recall since I was surprised by it, when messing with some hardware with issue's in win2k3.
If BSoD is the only hope mac-zealots have of poking at Windows users then ***** ... makes me ironically happy. - MonkeyFarts, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9"Let's say I want a laptop. All I want to do is browse the web and check my email. I want to do so cheaply. What do I buy?"
Macbook: $1099, or $1049 with a student discount.
Or if money is really an issue, get a refurbished MacBook, which works just like new, for some $900. Now I know that you're going to say that even $900 isn't cheap enough, but you need to keep in mind that, for the hardware, $900 is pretty damn reasonable. Macs also have a knack for lasting a really long time, so that $900 goes a pretty long ways. Apple's goal isn't to make cheap computers per se. They make good computers, and have been becoming more and more reasonable in terms of price all the time. - Stradenko, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Hate for non-free is not the same as love for freedom. Try and be more positive here.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10schestowitz is a high school barely legal. He hasn't got a clue of how the real world works.
- fanclerks, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Actually, BSODs aren't a thing of the past unfortunately. I saw a few with Vista, MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION if I recall. And I work in a data center where I've seen some Win2k3 boxes BSOD with the same error. So unfortunately, no, they're not a thing of the past. You just don't see em as often anymore. XP is definitely alot stabler though.
- simonzen13, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8This information is out of date (pre-10.4). it doesn't mention launchd at all:

duggmirror cached the 503 unavailable message - skoles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Mine boots up in about 6 seconds, so apparently nothing much is happening.
Although, no matter how fast any computer is, Photoshop boots in the same amount of time. - adamkmccarthy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5whoever wrote that should apply for a position as Operating Systems lecturer in the computer science department in my college. would make things a lot easier to understand and oust the silly git i have at the moment. Win Win!
- ShrimpCrackers, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6@MacbookPromat drivers can mess up any operating system. I've crashed OSX86 dozens of times just doing that. Drivers are always a major issue. Its a non-argument to say that Windows may suck because it gets BSOD's thanks to badly written or incompatible drivers since those kinds of things can crash any operating system, even OSX.
- Obvioustroll, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Sadly, people still believe the over-price myth; they compare a Macbook Pro with a bottom-of-the-line Dell and announce that the MB is much more expensive - instead of comparing similar hardware.
- shyboyswin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@aristotle0dude
Having a Mac does not make you immune to hardware failures. You need to do backups, having a Mac does not make you special. - babble, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4paulmdx:
Yes, of course it's possible to buy a bottom-end laptop or desktop for a a few hundred less than the cheapest Mac you can buy. Nobody really debates that. The FUD Mac users have to counter is the continuing myth that equivalently specced PC hardware is ALWAYS cheaper, and Macs are ALWAYS more expensive. See Paul Thurott's ongoing rants here (he became nearly apoplectic when Apple launched the Mac Pro; his price comparisons were all over the map in an unending effort to try and make a "similarly equipped" Dell machine cheaper).
The reason we keep asking folks to compare equivalent hardware is because PC zealots continually refuse to do so. - larsabrasha, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4http://www.kernelthread.com/mac/osx/arch_startup.html
- aristotle0dude, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4If your time is worthless and you don't care about security or have a well defined backup strategy in place, then I suppose a windows based laptop may be right for you.
For some people, the convenience of not having to worry constantly about viruses is worth the extra cash. - mk2ja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Its like magic..."
- uownedge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's cool to see how everything kind of comes together like that.
A couple other things you can do at boot:
control - Allows you to select the boot device. Comes in handy for booting from picky firewire/USB external CD/DVD drives
cmd + option + o + f (G3,G4) - loads the Open Firmware command prompt. This is mostly used for troubleshooting and a few common fixes (stuck CDs and such)
These are on most of those "list of Mac boot command" pages, but a lot of people still ask me about them, so I thought I'd share. - SirBotchness, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2digg, not slahdot
more basic computer operations like its the greatest thing in the world. All it has to have is the word mac in it and boom, frontpage. - adamkmccarthy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1or "photoshop tutorial", that'll get you on the frontpage for some reason?
- coldfusion1970, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ uownedge
I assume you meant to hold down the key or the key rather than the key. As that gives you the choice of boot volumes. - coldfusion1970, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sorry that should say the "ALT" key or the "OPTION" key, but digg edited it out.
- Obvioustroll, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Holding down eject will do the same thing, if your keyboard has an eject button.
- keldawgyo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1exit script the bitch and you boot 3x faster and skip the unnecessary driver load.

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2lol what a stupid introduction "with little pictures we knew" with the unix system we "don't". lol, very good, i'll write it down to remember and laugh. most unix oses are exactly the ones showing exactly what's going on. if you don't understand, it's not their problem.
- justinlarsen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I actually got the BSOD in Parallels, crashed os x and restarted my whole system in the process.

- paulmdx, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1I did a quick search on NewEgg and found an Acer TravelMate for $654. Is the MacBook a higher spec machine? Almost certainly. That's not the point. For basic use, PCs are cheaper than Macs, end of story. Personally I'd rather have a brand new Acer for $654 than a refurb Mac for $900. That's just me. If you prefer to spend that little more and have the extra spec, then have at it - I have no beef with buying and spending what you want. Just don't try to tell me I should buy a Mac because it's the same price as the PC laptop, because guess what: it wasn't.
- cybermort, on 10/12/2007, -15/+9not magic but "is like magic" and it "just works" or any other catchy phrase intended to make you feel better on spending ludicrous amounts of money for Made in China BUT "Designed in California" PC's.

Comparing an expensive Dell to a Mac is also a moot point as most people don't *need* the expensive Dell. - pmuse, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1Link is farked.
- taintparty, on 10/12/2007, -9/+0God forbid anyone slam the two DRM empires at once. How dare you lump the white plastic corporation with evil M$ when they're both really just trying to steal everyone's money. Let's do the list again:
iPod = Chinese slaves
iTMS = musician slaves + #1 RIAA proponent
iPhone = %50 profit for Apple, you crap your pants if any other company ever tried that + badly crippled
iFanboys = the Christians of the tech world, dumb, blind, and loud as hell
This Apple fad will all blow over. People will learn that Apple = MS in white plastic, and move to Linux, which can't ever screw them over. Sooner or later they'll learn that EVERY corporation is only in it for the money and Apple really doesn't love them. - schestowitz, on 10/12/2007, -77/+6> What happens in the Mac OS X boot process?
