- Ireland, on 10/27/2007, -22/+126iPods and iPhones are bringing people to switch, OS X is keeping 'em there
- Lane, on 11/02/2007, -13/+108I clicked in hopes of a tablet mac, and what do i get? "mac sales are up" SIGH!
*goes back into his corner* - whymanwhy, on 10/25/2007, -8/+77Why is it that if you own a Mac you are all of a sudden "an enthusiast"
- dvsbastard, on 10/25/2007, -6/+45I think someone is confusing "enthusiasts" with "investors"...
- dvsbastard, on 10/25/2007, -6/+42Brand awareness is a very powerful tool... Don't underestimate the effect that the iPod and iPhone have had in ensuring that Apple is fast becoming a common household name...
- Riffraffs, on 10/25/2007, -14/+49It's not that Apple is got so much better, it's that Microsoft keeps stepping on their own dicks.
- pintomp3, on 10/27/2007, -7/+36since when is loyalty to corporations "thinking different"? use what you want to use, whether it's mac, windows, or linux. but rooting for a corporation is lame.
- inactive, on 10/25/2007, -28/+55fan boy article alert
- nakile, on 10/25/2007, -6/+29So what your saying is that once Mac OS and Windows both have viruses that Mac users will magically drift back to Windows?
I've never seen a UNIX virus anyway... - ToadLeg, on 10/24/2007, -8/+30But it gets people into a black-and-white thinking mode to digg an article about "My OS has a penis growing in size faster than your OS's penis"
- marko718, on 10/27/2007, -5/+26I will say, as one of those nerds the article mentions, that I recommend Macs to people all the time, even though I use Windows and Linux. Why? Any idiot can use a Mac I don't want to have to fix their computers all the time.
- norman619, on 10/25/2007, -15/+36I thought computer enthusiasts were folks who like to tinker with their systems? That usually means they are running either Windows or some flavor of Linux. I have never met one running Mac OS. Mac owners actually fall under the category of user not enthusiast.
- tcasey22, on 10/25/2007, -23/+43I've had just about enough of this "My OS is better than yours!" *****. Just choose the one you feel most comfortable with and use it, IN PRIVATE. Stop trying to shove a particular OS down peoples throats through digging certain Pro-Microsoft/Mac/Linux articles.
- ronmexico, on 10/24/2007, -6/+26How many different stories are you going to post this to? It wasn't funny the first time.
- dvsbastard, on 10/25/2007, -3/+22I am unique, I am an individual and I think different... Just like everyone else...
- inactive, on 10/24/2007, -2/+20If you boat a lot you are known as a boating enthusiast. I like to boat, but I just don't ever want to be referred to as a boating enthusiast. I hope they call me a guy that likes to boat.
- ffleming, on 10/25/2007, -3/+21The same reason that if you own a video game system, you're "a gamer" and must be either "hardcore" or "casual." So: stupidity.
- DjOverEZ, on 10/25/2007, -18/+35I never understood company loyalty. It's like rooting for the water company "I can't wait till more people get indoor plumbing!!"
- KSUdesigner, on 10/25/2007, -20/+34Right, because the reason that there are no viruses on Macs is because the marketshare is so low. It couldn't have anything at all to do with the security of the OS itself.
- rspeed, on 10/25/2007, -0/+14You should have that cough looked at.
- geometry, on 10/25/2007, -6/+20I hear this argument all the time. The simple fact is that the market share isn't the reason there aren't viruses and spyware, it's because it's a solid OS built on a solid platform (Unix). I'm no apple fan boy but if you take the time to understand what makes Windows open to viruses and compare that to OS X you'd see a huge difference. Linux holds a huge market share in the server market yet they are much more secure than Windows servers, why is that? Because people aren't trying to break them? No, it's because they're designed with these problems in mind.
- eexlebots, on 10/25/2007, -10/+24In this article he says that Mac nerds never ever switch from Mac to PC; well, I just did. I was sick of the awful Finder, and prefer Explorer and Media Center over Finder and Front Row. Verdict? Vista sucks and I would have preferred a new Mac, despite my Finder-hatred.
I've tried Linux and it's too much on a config-hassle at the moment (I use WPA2 on my router at home, and wpasupplicant doesn't like my netowrk card).
Bah. I don't like anything I suppose. I suppose I was happiest with BeOS, even with its meager half-finished stable of apps... ;P - superkendall, on 10/25/2007, -1/+14So you mean the worst that can happen to Mac users is that they are as bad off as Windows users are today?
Got it. - MakinBacon, on 10/25/2007, -1/+14How about the fact that Mac OS7, OS8 and OS9 had viruses (and held about 3-4% market share at the time)!
- mrsteveman1, on 10/24/2007, -0/+12Its funny because he seems to find himself in situations where there are giant penises flying at his face all the time.
Time for a career change maybe - LethalGeek, on 10/24/2007, -1/+13Agreed, what a bunch of bull to put in the description
- sequethin, on 10/25/2007, -7/+19I dunno but I haven't been a mac enthusiast till OS X... in fact... till Tiger. IMHO anything before Tiger sucked. Ok when my computer teacher in 4th grade had a little square computer with a mouse that made a barfing noise when it ejected a floppy I thought that was really cool but other than that - If you've been a mac enthusiast for 20 years then congrats... you deserve this time in the sun - if for nothing else than for being so loyal to an operating system that has sucked for so long... :)
- Ireland, on 10/24/2007, -15/+26Why who's underestimating them? The iPhone happens to be the coolest phone ever made.
- logandurand, on 10/25/2007, -3/+14goliath isn't saying that market share is the *only* reason OS X has little malware for it, he simply saying that it is a major factor. No one's hiding the fact that Windows is less secure than OS X.
- Ireland, on 10/24/2007, -3/+14Oh nice, throw us on an omelet please.
- andnever, on 10/25/2007, -7/+17exactly, because after all os x is built on an ever aging kernal that continues to support legacy OS's and makes the default user the admin...wait....no thats windows. thats right os x is built on unix and even the admin cant do admin functions without calling the super user...so youre right...cant wait for all those viruses
/idiot - daGUY, on 10/24/2007, -0/+10I think I'm the only one who got that reference...
- MacParrot, on 10/24/2007, -1/+11Hey, it's over90000's fantasy. Who am I to judge his latent homosexuality?
- superkendall, on 10/25/2007, -2/+12Windows users can kindly start by not replying to every Mac thread. If you don't want to read Mac stuff why are you here?
I don't read Windows stories unless the subject at hand interests me. - bitspace, on 10/25/2007, -1/+11Yes, but folks call it "The Jobs" or "The Steve."
- linkinpark342, on 10/25/2007, -7/+17Exactly. its all utterly unnecessary...
we all know Tux has a bigger penis than anyone else... - rspeed, on 10/24/2007, -0/+9There were 26 viruses for the classic Mac OS, not including Word and Excel macro viruses. There's a vastly lower number than Windows at the time, but it's still much higher than the number of viruses for OS X (which I believe stands at one).
It's not just market share, and it's not just OS security. It's both. As OS X gains market share there's going to be more attempts to all kinds of software, and that includes malware. There WILL be more attempts at making viruses for OS X. The odds are against any of them being a problem, though. Basically, they'll have to depend on security holes remaining undiscovered or unpatched. Thankfully, there shouldn't be another situation like we had with Windows 95 and Windows 98 with any operating system ever again.
I just can't imagine a Mac-based botnet ever popping up. - Polly, on 10/24/2007, -6/+15Apple really cares about me :D They're not just after my money any way they can get it.
- TremorX, on 10/24/2007, -11/+20When you find a product that you like, that suits all of your needs in a way that is intuitive/logical/easy/just plain cool, then it's in your own best interest that other people buy and use this product, so that said product is available indefinitely. If you're the only one using it, then the company can't survive and you're left settling for a product you're less interested in. So, no, it's nothing like your analogy, it's a large part of capitalism and what keeps the free market a-flowin'.
- shad0w, on 10/24/2007, -0/+9I agree with price and software as factors, but upgradeability isn't really a factor for the average consumer. As evidence by the tremendous growth in laptop sells and a declline in desktop sales, computer users would rather sacrifice upgradeability for portability. With this in mind, most computer users, at most, will upgrade their ram. Maybe they'll even buy an external hard drive. Most users aren't swapping out CPUs and video cards, so I really don't see upgradeability as a factor in buying a new pc.
- JLecker, on 10/29/2007, -1/+10Like terrible similes to... terrible similies.
- Assezdefromage, on 10/24/2007, -11/+20exactly (with no sarcasm)
- nullx42, on 10/24/2007, -1/+10Its missing "linux addicted virgin".
I kid. I kid :D - deadbaby, on 10/24/2007, -5/+13It's about sharing a common vision of what you want a computer to be. I think Apple, more or less, gets it. I think you could compare it to being an avid fan of a pro-sports team. It's a product, produced by a business, however you have some loyalty to this specific brand/team. Why? Who knows. Lots of reasons -- different for everyone. I think a lot of it just comes down to community. People like to feel like they are part of something special. Apple is brilliant at capitalizing on that. You would never see people having loyalty to say, Dell, because they produce and advertise their products as a commodity. There's no compelling reason to support Dell over HP or any other PC OEM. It's all the same stuff. Apple still makes a unique computer (thanks to OSX) which is also their main competitive advantage.
- noahhoward, on 10/24/2007, -8/+16No one is trying to shove their OS down anyones throat. Why are you here if You don't want to see a discussion about a Mac related article?
- nufoto, on 10/27/2007, -3/+11Ever heard of the MacPro a Tower with 4 PCIe slots, and two Processor slots also upgradeable, 4 Drive bays for adding SATA drives..one open Optical drive bay. http://www.apple.com/ca/macpro/
You were saying? - greener, on 10/24/2007, -3/+11Nerds use books not computers
- SystemHasFailed, on 10/24/2007, -1/+9Because "enthusiast" is more politically correct than "fanboy". ;)
- superkendall, on 10/25/2007, -3/+11Funny you should mention sheep when there are so many Windows users flocking with each other.
Is Product Activation the funny smelling building after the long truck ride for Windows users? -
