- inactive, on 05/04/2009, -4/+176There's only one thing I want to know about this Disney/Hulu deal: will we get Darkwing Duck episodes on Hulu? 'Cause that ***** would be friggin' awesome.
- Branchex, on 05/04/2009, -7/+145If iTunes rented TV episodes for a nickel each I would consider using that over the ads and streaming problems that come with Hulu and other TV sites.
- RetepNamenots, on 05/04/2009, -11/+124How about we try breaking down the barriers between nations on the world wide web and allow content to be streamed all over the world?
- MikeOSX, on 05/04/2009, -1/+104The second they charge for Hulu, is the second it drops off the radar.
- inigomntoya, on 05/04/2009, -1/+74Apparently, my good sir, you never saw Duck Tales. Because THAT ***** blew everything TV related out.of.the.water!
- lennybird, on 05/04/2009, -0/+64I honestly don't have a problem at all with the advertisements. They're not TNT or TBS commercial breaks that are three times longer than show itself. I can deal with 30 seconds.
- usingpond, on 05/04/2009, -2/+37Uh, Steve is on the board of directors for Disney, so it can't be too troubling for him.
- MacParrot, on 05/04/2009, -4/+36For now, Hulu isn't portable. I can't legally take content from Hulu and put it on my iPod to watch later. Even with the iPhone/iPod Touch app they talk about in the article it still would be a PITA. How long would it take via weak public WiFi or 3G to download video content?
A better model would be a time-based self destruct. Allow for a download (with ads) that you could sync via iTunes or whatever your favorite content management software is that would be unplayable after a week or so. - SpoonMSU, on 05/04/2009, -1/+32I love Hulu, and I don't mind the ads, in fact if they had as many as they do during TV broadcast I'd still watch it. I hope someday they can extend it to live TV, and maybe put some pressure on cable/satellite. Just don't obstruct the content while it's playing (ahem, Youtube) and I'm happy. I don't mind not "owning" the content, but if I want to, I'd better not get any DRM attached to it, and I'd better be able to play it when I want, where I want.
That said, I worry more and more every day that some network exec somewhere is going to ***** ***** up for everyone and ruin it. They may already be showing signs of that with the Boxee restrictions. - firex726, on 05/04/2009, -1/+31Agreed...
I'm not going to pay $5 for a movie I can only watch one time, and only within 24 hours of starting it; when I could pay $15 for it and watch it however many times I want, and paused for as long as I want. Within 1 year I'll most likely watch it more then 3 times so it will have already paid for itself.
While the price is comparable to other brick and mortar video rental stores, with them I don't get those restrictions.
Of course this doesn't take into account piracy and the like. - DontThinkSo, on 05/04/2009, -0/+24Most gentlemanly flame war ever.
- SirVenro, on 05/04/2009, -1/+22Hulu's pretty much the only reason that I don't pirate more TV shows.
- ontain, on 05/04/2009, -1/+21blathering blatherskite!
- SwiftKick34, on 05/04/2009, -11/+29Hulu--An evil plot to destroy the world. Apple's world, that is.
- inactive, on 05/04/2009, -0/+18And because it was a good site people told their friends about it, so...
- LightPhoenix, on 05/04/2009, -4/+22FTA: "But thanks to strong word of mouth, the site quickly became an online destination for watching premium movies and TV shows."
No, the site became popular because it was clean, simple, and compatible. - chockster, on 05/04/2009, -0/+17"NBC is always trying to monetize their *****."
I know big business can be evil at times, but you can't really complain about a company trying to make money. Come on. - bloominoctober, on 05/04/2009, -1/+18Hulu is a regular stop during my net-surfing. It's a simple, clean site that allows me to watch some of the best shows on television for free. Can't go wrong with that.
- inactive, on 05/04/2009, -1/+18Yes. Didn't you read the article?
- Elranzer, on 05/04/2009, -0/+17Fair enough, both of you. Darkwing Duck was a spin-off of Duck Tales. They both came from the same womb of pure awesomeness.
- burkish127, on 05/04/2009, -2/+18Hulu may not remain free for long.
I recently attended a talk with Katie O'Connell, former Senior Development Executive at NBC, who spoke about this kind of thing. She and the rest of the executives at NBC are seriously considering and trying to come up with a viable plan for making Hulu a subscription based site.
Their belief is that it isn't technically free on TV because of advertising and things, so why should it be free online. They make virtually no profits with the current online advertising models. So with growing numbers of viewers online and declining numbers of television viewers, they need something new. They're considering either either charging a monthly subscription for unlimited views on Hulu, or using micro charges of 5-10 cents per view.
Personally, I don't like where this is going. - inactive, on 05/04/2009, -0/+16Good sir, I have great respect for your opinion, and much love of Duck Tales, but when there's trouble you call DW.
- chockster, on 05/04/2009, -1/+16No, it's better than YouTube. Not for people outside of the US obviously, but it's not "covered in candy", it's network TV on demand for free.
- inactive, on 05/04/2009, -0/+13How the ***** are they not making a profit on their online advertising model? Something seems seriously wrong about that. It's enough for broadcast TV, but not Hulu?
- BxBoy, on 05/04/2009, -2/+14"Life is like a hurricane"
- MikeOSX, on 05/04/2009, -0/+12It is for that very reason that Hulu should make more money from ads. Everybody skips past the commercials on broadcast television. You can't skip the ads on Hulu, and for a mere thirty seconds, why would you?
- inactive, on 05/04/2009, -0/+11I am in agreement. It is settled.
- cyberkode, on 05/04/2009, -1/+12Ducktails WOO WOO.
- inigomntoya, on 05/04/2009, -1/+12Fine. I will concede to Elranzer's point. *shakes hands*
- Dalhectar, on 05/04/2009, -0/+11If you can't get the minimum 480Kbps Hulu requires for 3G... you need a new carrier. If carriers can charge us $100 for service and can't guarantee some minimal level of service, customers should out right revolt. The fact we put up with their shenanigans is alone cause for alarm.
And paying $2 a show for portability isn't a viable platform by itself. Why pay anything for a show that's broadcast for free over the air? Or pay $2 per show for something you've already payed however much for cable/satellite?
Torrents are too cumbersome for my sister to use, and paying extra for something we already have I see as a non-starter. Just offer free downloading with embedded ads, no content management, no DRM ***** for non-premium shows, we'll settle for your ads so you can pay for delivery... why is this so effing hard? - alaaco, on 05/04/2009, -2/+12Tale Spin sucked? Are you high?!
- zero21xxx, on 05/04/2009, -1/+11Let's get dangerous.
- Stoke, on 05/04/2009, -0/+9@Buckeye17 That's because one of America's biggest exports is culture. Music, Movies, and TV. And you should really check out Top Gear.

"Now Jobs is stepping into the Magic Kingdom. On Jan. 24, Walt Disney Co. (DIS ) agreed to pay $7.4 billion in stock to acquire Pixar Animation Studios (PIXR ), where Jobs is chairman, CEO, and 50.6% owner. As part of the deal, Jobs will become the largest shareholder at Disney and take a seat on the entertainment giant's board. His top creative executive at Pixar, John A. Lasseter, will oversee the movies at both Pixar's and Disney's animation studios. Pixar's president, Edwin Catmull, will run the business side for the two studios."
Also, didn't read all the way to the end, just noticed the brief mention of it. But that said, I would be very surprised if this isn't part of a much larger plan. - raydeen, on 05/04/2009, -1/+10Hulu is short for Cthulhu. It has me wrapped in it's evil tentacles almost every night.
- 7aji, on 05/04/2009, -0/+8compared to 8-10 minutes of TV ads, it's kind of a gift.
- TheObviousChild, on 05/05/2009, -0/+8Duck Tales + Hot Pockets + Yoo Hoo followed by some Sonic 1 on Genesis made me a pretty happy kid after school.
- stubear, on 05/04/2009, -0/+8Rights to distribute worldwide have to be negotiated with all parties involved as more money could potentially be made. Actors and production crews want their cut of the pie. Distribution on this scale is still relatively new and all the kinks have not been worked out yet.
- burkish127, on 05/04/2009, -0/+8Actually, this is exactly the kind of thing that they're considering for Hulu. Either a monthly subscription or micro charges per view. Katie O'Connell, former Senior Development Executive for NBC, talked about it when she recently visited my school.
- verkon, on 05/04/2009, -4/+11Like it matters, can't access hulu from outside the US.
- Charlie1er, on 05/04/2009, -1/+8I know that it's sponsored by american compagnies, but how can they think that canadian would not buy their stuff? I shop at Wal-Mart and eat at McDonald (and Hooter) too! I wanna see the american TV :(
Screw Hulu (at least until I can see them)! - chronopublish, on 05/04/2009, -1/+8I am pretty amazed that for any given movie, you're "likely" to watch it more than 3 times in 1 year. I'd say that about 5% of the movies I watch are worthy of a 2nd viewing, and often not until at least a year later. Renting makes more sense for me in most cases.
- BxBoy, on 05/04/2009, -0/+7Let's just hope they don't begin to charge like a Cable/Satellite provider.
- aristotle0dude, on 05/04/2009, -5/+11HULU shmulu. Who cares? Do I live in the US? No.
- Jaxim, on 05/04/2009, -1/+7Using my Windows Media Center (comes free with Windows Vista) I can record programs using its DVR functionality and time shift my watching by placing the video onto my Zune. In my opinion, this beats Apple's iTunes/AppleTV paid for service in terms of price and beats Hulu in terms of portability.
- inactive, on 05/04/2009, -14/+20Screw Hulu!. Long as the rest of the world can't view it. Screw them!
- jbird32275, on 05/04/2009, -0/+6Thank you MikeOSX. You KNOW people watch the commercials on HULU and they provide a way for an interested consumer to go directly to the manufacturer's site. AND they provide better tracking and analysis.
They should be able to charge a premium for these ads. - Elranzer, on 05/04/2009, -0/+6They should just make a version with streaming Canandian ads. However, it's up to you (Canada) to get your companies to WANT to advertise on the Hulu model.
- regeya, on 05/04/2009, -0/+5Yeah, and Steve is in charge of the unit which makes the hit Disney movies, Pixar.
I bet George Lucas is STILL kicking himself. :-> -
