- xenodata, on 11/23/2008, -3/+92I like the news, but why not link directly to the dev team's site here?
http://blog.iphone-dev.org/ - spyd4r, on 11/23/2008, -1/+26alright then... time to work on the 2nd gen ipod touch!!
- mfalk, on 11/23/2008, -2/+25meh i really don't want the hassle of installing all my apps again but i really need the fetch email fix
- mrsteveman1, on 11/23/2008, -0/+17Which someone who wanted a jailbroken device wouldn't have upgraded to until now....
- Radan, on 11/23/2008, -0/+16While I don't know how much work you will have to put down in order to update your jailbreaked phone, I can tell you that the latest update was really welcomed. Safari is MUCH MUCH more stable than before, and it's also a lot faster or at least smoother when going through different animations.
For us Swedes another really big fix was that they AT LAST fixed the very annoying "är/år" bug with the auto completion. Basically, "är" means "is/am/are" and "år" means "year" and the iPhone always defaulted to writing "år", which lead to rather strange sentences like "My name year Daniel". - Sparky9292, on 11/23/2008, -0/+14There are no equivalents for:
PdaNet - Tethering app.
Cycorder - record movies
MxTube - download YouTube movies
iSteamy - pr0n surfing app (better than Safari).
mCleaner - phone/sms filtering
SwirlyMMS - MMS (duh)
Can't uhm pirate apps without Jailbreaking too. - brokem, on 11/23/2008, -3/+15Google street-view, here I come!
- jparkinson, on 11/23/2008, -0/+11http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.in ...
because iTunes is so ***** slow to download for me... and has timed out twice. this link took 5 minutes. - EvanLugh, on 11/23/2008, -1/+12Shaaadup.
- cerealjynx, on 11/23/2008, -0/+9Get aptbackup from Cydia, makes it fairly painless. Though not entirely so.
- MasterQ, on 11/23/2008, -0/+8@dullnation: you're right... for now cycorder is fine, but apple knows how to get the most from their hardware. if they made an official video recorder it would be much better than cycorder
- EvanLugh, on 11/23/2008, -0/+8You can use MobileInstallation file 2.1 :)
Also - Apple hasn't given us iPod touch owners street view due to battery life. There is an rumored update for Thanksgiving. - likwidfuzion, on 11/23/2008, -1/+9MobileInstallation patch and PdaNet are the sole reasons I will always jailbreak my iPhone.
- Tddupre, on 11/23/2008, -0/+8dont get installer there is nothing on it at all
- tmacfan123, on 11/23/2008, -0/+8because that would be the smart thing to do
- dullnation, on 11/23/2008, -0/+7Cycorder does the job but it's far from ***** awesome.
- peaceninja, on 11/23/2008, -2/+9i agree, the RAZR is just too revolutionary to not switch to the iPhone. the RAZR is just so gosh-darn thin!
- MasterQ, on 11/23/2008, -1/+7Copy & Paste, MMS, Video Capture, and other USEFUL features here i come! with jailbreaking of course :)
- stevelawrence, on 11/23/2008, -0/+6You umm...know that Streetview was NOT included with Apple's version of 2.2 for the iPod Touch, yes?
- inactive, on 11/23/2008, -1/+7Sounds more like a bug in your language.
- iPanda, on 11/23/2008, -0/+6you cant jailbreak the 2ndgen ipod touch yet, regardless of the version.
- blurrie, on 11/23/2008, -2/+8yay! 2.2 for the rest of us! does mobileinstallation need to be updated or can i use 2.1's?
- iChad, on 11/23/2008, -1/+7The iPhone Dev Team are like superheroes ;) Rock On!
- Pardis, on 11/23/2008, -0/+5if Apple was not so draconian about what you can and cant install on a phone you paid for, people would not need to jailbreak it.
- nebkiwi, on 11/23/2008, -0/+5I love jailbreaking, Oh I love jailbreaking *starts singing*
- kris33, on 11/23/2008, -0/+5Be careful, it does not work every time. It didn't work for me.
Luckily, I was prepared and had done it the manual way using this technique:
http://www.twiphone.com/2008/08/28/how-to-re-insta ... - Shaymojack, on 11/23/2008, -0/+5Both, and while I never did the jailbreak before 2.0, with the right sources there are now quite a lot of apps in Cydia. A lot more than in installer.
- NBABUCKS1, on 11/23/2008, -0/+5too lazy? they jailbroke the new firmware in two days, and aren't charging a dime for thier product. I don't really call that lazy.
You want the windows version, make it yourself. Otherwise quite yer bitchin'. - jaundicedave, on 11/24/2008, -0/+5Oh, boy, I can't wait!
- nebkiwi, on 11/23/2008, -0/+4that is the question.
- inactive, on 11/23/2008, -0/+4the main problem is that itunes for windows is incredibly poorly coded and i guess they just couldn't be bothered porting it to xp64
- fabio1, on 11/23/2008, -0/+4aside the apps above, I also like to use:
bossprefs: i can toggle bluetooth, wifi, edge, etc all from one place. you can also use it to hide apps that you don´t use that often, but still don´t want to uninstall, or can´t (stocks, in my case).
categories: allows you to create "folders", and put your apps inside them. Having seen some iphones with 6 to 7 screens filled with apps, I find this a blessing. And there won´t be a applestore equivalent, at least as long as apple forbids a third party app from launching other apps.
winterboard: cool if you´re into customizing you phone appearance
terminal: browse the filesystem of your phone, or, if you install ssh, you can also connect to unix servers. For sysadmins, this is a must. (although i think there´s an equivalent of ssh in the appstore, this is like opening up a terminal window when you´re on your pc, so i prefer it) - ohemsted, on 11/23/2008, -2/+52nd Generation iPod Touches are not highest on the list of things to do according to the iPhone Dev Team.
- SpoonDigg, on 11/23/2008, -0/+3lazy!.. dude, the dev team is doing this on their own time and they are only getting paid with donations. Why dont you give them a couple of dollars and they might be working on a windows version and might give you a cookie.. so meanwhile stop your bitching..
- ultrafez, on 11/24/2008, -0/+3In what way is .Net crap? It's beautiful to program with.
- EvanLugh, on 11/23/2008, -2/+5You can use MobileInstallation file 2.1 :) Or get MiPatch or MiFix from Cydia (which is also 2.1)
- inactive, on 11/23/2008, -0/+3cycorder, boss prefs and the last fm thing
- 12Iceman, on 11/23/2008, -0/+3Actually, the jailbreak offered by QuickPwn does include both iPhone 3G users and iPod Touch users. The only people excluded are the iPod Touch 2nd Generation Users.
- PunkRampant, on 11/23/2008, -0/+3I think he meant apps from installer or Cydia, which are wiped clean when iTunes updates the firmware.
- dukksoup, on 11/23/2008, -1/+4WHOOSH!!!11
- Xandro, on 11/24/2008, -0/+2Yeah, your jailbroken iPhone is going to run slower and could crash if you install a bunch of crap that runs backgrounded. MxTube for example has a daemon that runs all the time.. you can see what's running using MobileTerminal, logging in as the super user, and running ps -e
- mrsteveman1, on 11/24/2008, -0/+2Wait are people saying the jailbroken one can enable street view?
- SouthsideIrish, on 11/24/2008, -0/+2And the 3G has never been unlocked.
- freqk, on 11/24/2008, -0/+2@AceyS: yes, i love memorizing long URLs.
- KennMac, on 11/23/2008, -0/+2There is virtually no way to brick the phone while jailbreaking. Not to say it hasn't happened before, but this is no reason not to follow the ridiculously easy procedure of performing the jailbreak. You can always restore the phone back to its factory firmware if needed. If you're dumb enough to get the phone in an unusable state, you shouldn't be jailbreaking in the first place. In other words, worry about yourself.
- inactive, on 11/23/2008, -0/+2Time to go to work, work all night.
Search for underpants we.
We won't stop until we have underpants.
Lots of yummy pants we. - JustinTX, on 11/23/2008, -0/+2Didn't work for me. I should have followed kris33's article.
I followed the instructions for aptbackup but the list got lost somewhere between backing the phone up to my desktop prior to the firmware update and the restore from the desktop post-update. When I got aptbackup reinstalled it complained as if there was no list of deb packages to be reinstalled.
Fortunately the vast majority of the packages I had installed were theme packages.
...here's hoping the reports of increased Safari stability are true. - tyber, on 11/24/2008, -0/+2Why?
- myunamewastaken, on 11/23/2008, -0/+2Confirmed. The update includes baseband update for the iPhone 3G, but not for the 1st generation.
- GuyHersh, on 11/23/2008, -0/+2Thanks for the MiPatch tip! I finally updated to 2.2 (from 2.0.1). I never updated because I was dreading messing with the MobileInstallation file again.
In case anyone else wants to do it this way, just open up Cydia, and add http://cydia.hackulo.us to your sources. Then you'll be able to find MiPatch. -
