- deadbaby, on 04/06/2008, -10/+66I don't think I'll be upgrading unless it has some other features besides 3G. 2G is fine for e-mail and light web browsing.
- dizilbdog, on 04/06/2008, -3/+58You know I just got a MMS message sent to my iPhone.. Oh wait that's right I can't read it, because I can't get MMS messages.. How about a 3G phone with MMS thanks apple
- mightytribble, on 04/06/2008, -1/+35The WWDC is a little over 60 days away. Steve Jobs usually gives a keynote. And this year, they've a dedicated iPhone track. So my money is on a 3G iPhone announced by Steve at the WWDC, in mid-June.
- jonr, on 04/06/2008, -2/+27I'll buy your obsolete iPhone for $150... :)
- KennMac, on 04/06/2008, -4/+27Wrong. You buy the hardware, pop in the SIM, and you're done.
- jp0692, on 04/06/2008, -8/+31Yeah you can upgrade. AT&T just extends your contract for another 2 years.
- saucercrab, on 04/06/2008, -2/+25oh oh! iPhone is lacking in sooo many crucial areas! I want it all and I want it now! /sarcasm
I wouldn't trade in my last 10 months with this phone for anything. Most were aware the initial release was going to be a bit skinny, but I have thoroughly enjoyed the groundbreaking technologies that continue to get overlooked by critics. No product is perfect on release, and I was well aware of the lack of 3G when I bought it and knew this day would come. Better to have the basic phone released in '07 than wait till '10 for the perfect iPhone. (BTW I'm no fanboi - the iPhone is the ONLY piece of apple tech I have ever purchased...) - ferrell, on 04/06/2008, -4/+22So what about all of us in the middle of a 2 year AT&T iPhone contract.
Can we upgrade? - inactive, on 04/06/2008, -3/+20Kevin Rose makes buggy websites.
- saucercrab, on 04/06/2008, -1/+13Really? I absolutely adore mine. I guess I should pay close attention to a random hater on Digg and throw my POS in the trash....
- seldon452, on 04/06/2008, -1/+12Well, that was inevitable.
- milkmage, on 04/06/2008, -2/+13why would you have to upgrade? I took the SIM out of my iphone, put it in my friends blackjack and it worked as expected - i don't think ATT cares what phone you're using.
- KennMac, on 04/06/2008, -3/+13Did you ever stop to think that the algorithm takes in account more variables than counting the number of diggs? Maybe instead of bitching, you should try to understand and master the system, and stop talking about it like it's a conspiracy against you.
- etx313, on 04/06/2008, -0/+10Yesterdays technology TODAY!
- threemagic, on 04/06/2008, -2/+12I agree, when I need to really browse anything I'm usually within wireless range of something. It's never been an issue.
- dizilbdog, on 04/06/2008, -2/+10That's what you think and hope, but ATT may not abide by that since Apple and ATT have a special partnership...
- FDDIcent, on 04/06/2008, -0/+7Right now if you upgrade from an 8gb iPhone to a 16gb it doesn't extend your contract, so upgrading to the 3G might not either.
- locojones, on 04/06/2008, -2/+9Isn't that the point? That it should be built in, like every other phone in the entire world.....from 10 years ago?
- MacEnvy, on 04/06/2008, -3/+10Dude, it's personal tech, not a damn car. They aren't going to give you "trade-in" money.
- royalwcheese, on 04/06/2008, -1/+8Oh wait, except those features actually work on the iPhone... damn.
- JoshuaH, on 04/06/2008, -3/+10yes.
- blackjack75, on 04/06/2008, -0/+7The only thing that is seriously groundbreaking is the UI. And yes I think it's worth the price. A nokia N95 has all the features of the iphone and more (better camera, integrated GPS, support for memory cards) but the interfaces on those classic phones all look so dated. Apple's genius is to look at the screen and basically take out anything that isn't really crucial and only makes the phone look clunky.
In the same way I have seen a hundred mini pcs, not one is as elegan as the mac mini. The reason: simplicity in design. - celkin, on 04/06/2008, -1/+8No, digg ME up!
- johnpaul191, on 04/06/2008, -0/+7trade-ins accepted at www.ebay.com
- inactive, on 04/06/2008, -2/+8Mossberg outranks the Pope on this kind of thing.
- inactive, on 04/06/2008, -0/+6No 3G in my area, i wish they would expand the 3G network.
- badjoke, on 04/06/2008, -0/+5"2.5g"
- griffeycom, on 04/06/2008, -0/+5iPhones are the same price regardless if you're signing a contract or not. There are no 2-year contract discounts! So grab a 3G put your SIM in and you're good to go!
- Janizzary, on 04/06/2008, -1/+6Ralph de la Vega from AT&T hinted at it...
- johnpaul191, on 04/06/2008, -0/+5"prepares to roll out" is PR crapspeak. AT&T still has craptastic 3G coverage in the USA, and you really think they will magically roll out 4G in a few months?
Just a guess, but their next big expansion may be with the stuff they acquired in the 700MHz auction. - hotdamn, on 04/06/2008, -1/+6seriously?
the world needs more people with your logic.
not. - ross., on 04/06/2008, -0/+4Feel free to answer the question instead of digging me down.
- skeletorcares, on 04/06/2008, -1/+5unless it has a decent browser with flash, ***** it.
- lepton, on 04/06/2008, -0/+4I believe it will come out before WWDC. We know the App Store will be out at the end of June. Apple will want apps that are compatible with the new phones. So, the new phones will have to be in the hands of developers beforehand. I see the phones coming in May,so developers will have phones in hand, and familiarity with a final beta of the SDK by WWDC, then the SDK 1.0 comes out at the WWDC, with App Store business details. Developers have a few weeks to final polish apps for the App Store, which will burst forth at the end of June with 3G and GPS aware apps.
- ChromaVita, on 04/06/2008, -0/+4Everyone that sends pictures via phone.
- MacEnvy, on 04/06/2008, -2/+6If you like the iPhone, you should really check out Leopard. Everything is easy to use and exactly where it is you'd expect it to be. Time Capsule is positively brilliant.
Plus, it's getting easier and easier to go the "Hackintosh" route. Just search for a torrent using the name 'Kalyway Leopard' - it's the whole Leopard DVD, hacked to install on any PC using BIOS (instead of EFI).
/Apple fanboy - allrecordsalex, on 04/06/2008, -1/+5when steve announced the original iphone in jan 2007, he said the next one would be 3g
- ralphthemagi, on 04/06/2008, -1/+5Not if the 3G service carries a premium, which it very well might.
- chkdg8, on 04/06/2008, -1/+5What a great video. To hear Walt Mossberg speak and bring it in from a consumer's point of view is right on 100%. I did realize that he dropped the Apple brand way too many times (known heavy shareholder) although towards the middle he kind of caught himself and decided to give others like Tivo and Amazon a fair shake.
- solidus636, on 04/06/2008, -1/+5Its currently 2G. That means it uses the EDGE network, and not ATT's really fast 3G network. That's why everything takes so long to load on the iPhone when browsing with Safari. With 3G, the speed will increase greatly.
- warkro, on 04/06/2008, -1/+4if by Kevin Rose you mean everyone, then you are right.
- alex1015, on 04/06/2008, -1/+4I believe theres a third party app for this. Install via installer after a jailbreak.
- nightmare1228, on 04/06/2008, -0/+3I'm confused by this. He said that some phones may be compatible, but does that mean that the newer phones have the 3G radio built in already? If not then why isn't it enabled and why don't people know about this?
- qwertyuio, on 04/06/2008, -1/+4Someone's jealous...
- dimplemonkey, on 04/06/2008, -0/+3You misinterpreted what Walt said. We're not getting 3G iPhones in 60 days... only him.
OK, everyone walk away, nothing else to see here... - dizilbdog, on 04/06/2008, -0/+3Yes it should. I had my iphone hacked but it was buggy and apps crashed all the time. I find the iPhone for such an advanced phone is so unadvanced
- mrsteveman1, on 04/06/2008, -0/+3You never really had a choice....
- EtherGnat, on 04/06/2008, -0/+3"cares about 3g i mean realy? Is not like you can download content to the iphone."
Off the top of my head I can tell you a few ways I use GPS:
* streaming video from Slingbox and Orb
* Remote desktop sessions
* Faster web access
* Largish files I occasionally have to download for review
* Faster performance from map software using online data, particularly in conjunction with GPS - inactive, on 04/06/2008, -3/+6Yeah for $600.00
- locojones, on 04/06/2008, -1/+4Heavy shareholder + journalist = ethical conflict and bias.
