- alanocu, on 12/13/2008, -3/+50Are you always an annoying snob or just trying harder than usual to be a miserable son of a bitch?
- sjbdallas, on 12/13/2008, -3/+47Only if it comes in camo.
- CVL4317, on 12/13/2008, -3/+46Wal-Mart, the best way to kill the elitism of anything.
- nabor605, on 12/13/2008, -0/+28Did you know that 58% of all statistics are made up?
- kd420, on 12/13/2008, -2/+29Anyone who thinks that having an iPhone makes them special, or that Walmart will ruin it deserves the shock that's coming to them. Apple only held back releasing it with Walmart so they could overprice it for those snobs. Now that sufficient time has passed, they'll rake in more money from a wider audience.
- Volatile36, on 12/13/2008, -9/+28Congratulations. The iPhone isn't cool anymore because of this deal with Walmart.
- Blasphemous88, on 12/13/2008, -0/+14In other news, AT&T's data network falters under the pressure of excessive 3G device utilization.
- Typhoon2009, on 12/13/2008, -2/+15Because certain people feel a raised sense of esteem when they own an 'exclusive' piece of hardware (news flash: it was exclusive when it came out and cost half a grand. now it's 200 bucks. get over yourselves.)
- Slackdragon, on 12/13/2008, -0/+13Does that somehow reduce the functionality that you were drawn to initially?
Or did you buy it as a status symbol to bolster the fact that you're an shallow prick? - BayouBengal, on 12/13/2008, -2/+15Why the impression that only poor white trash shop at Walmart? A very wide demographic shops at Walmart because people tend to choose the source where they can obtain the goods cheaply and conveniently.
- smitty7789, on 12/13/2008, -2/+12I don't understand how it could be bad introducing a great/useful product to a larger mass audience; good for them.
- AFelsinger, on 12/13/2008, -0/+8says who, a fortune teller?
- aadyss, on 12/13/2008, -0/+7ah yes, iPhone elitism...."consciousness of or pride in belonging to a select or favored group." That's what makes the world go around. Why would you want the ignorant masses to have the pinnacle of elitism...the iPhone. Perhaps 'foolish prideful people' should be the elitist group. You all could have fool sessions at Saks Fifth Avenue................children could laugh and point at the elitist fools.
- inactive, on 12/13/2008, -2/+8Welcome to the "ELITE APPLE FANBOYS CLUB" Wal-Mart shoppers! All you pretentious iPhone owners who just love whipping it out are gonna have Bubba and Ethel in your prestigious club! HAHAHAHA!!! I love it!
- dagr8tim, on 12/13/2008, -1/+7(smug)Atleast Wally World isn't selling blackberries. I'm still safe.(/smug)
- KurtangleTN, on 12/14/2008, -0/+6***** APPLE THEY ARE NOT ELITE ANYMORE HOW DARE THEY TRY TO GET MORE MARKETSHARE ON THEIR PHONE, LAME APPLE.. LAME.
/s - pandaxrage, on 12/13/2008, -3/+8Well somehow you managed to figure out Digg, so I wouldn't put it past your people.
- kolop1, on 12/13/2008, -2/+7Not if the economy keeps falling.
- amenic, on 12/13/2008, -0/+5The only way the iphone would truly be elite were if it included a jammer that blocked all other cell phones from working within a 50 yard radius :P
- badqat, on 12/13/2008, -7/+12I'll go on record and call that a rather conservative estimate. Wouldn't shock me if they sell double that number.
- amenic, on 12/13/2008, -2/+7Umm sorry a phone does not make you cool no matter how much time you spent in line for it or how many people you bought it before.
Lining up for a phone does sound really cool now that I think of it...
/s - melpost, on 12/13/2008, -0/+5the title says "4.5 million iPhones, but the article says 45 million... which is the real estimate?
- thcobbs, on 12/13/2008, -2/+7Before this point the iphone was no longer "cool". Now they are going for one thing and one thing only.... MARKETSHARE.
If they capture... say, 15% of the market, and are able to sell 5 games or apps, they are ROLLING in recurring revenue... not to mention the boost to iTunes music and movie sales.
You're witnessing the birth of true convergence.... and apple is spearheading the charge. - Farmer77, on 12/13/2008, -1/+6Every mid-western housewife and grandmother will have one now. Good news for Apple. Bad news for Apple Elitists.
- Jb611, on 12/13/2008, -2/+7Too bad your only choices are the Hannah Montana and Larry the Cable Guy designs.
- fonetikly, on 12/13/2008, -1/+5I would think that everyone that wants an iPhone has one by now. Is there really a mass of people out there that just can't seem to find an Apple or AT&T store? It's not like it's going to be any cheaper there. What is the possible benefit of buying it at Walmart?
- semperfidoordi, on 12/13/2008, -2/+6Buried for mis-leading title. I really hate how people who don't know economics headline things. This is ONE analysts point of view. For every one point of view in the market, there are a hundred other ones.
- thcobbs, on 12/13/2008, -0/+4haha... if it does come in camo, I'd have already bought one.
- inactive, on 12/13/2008, -0/+4Wow! It isn't even 2009 yet and these "prophets" are already predicting the future. Walmart will realize their sales of the iPhone when it is already accounted for.
- gotribe06, on 12/13/2008, -0/+4Definitely. Remember when Starter jackets with sports teams were cool? Sigh...
- LordStandley, on 12/13/2008, -0/+4They would sell even more if they would get away from ATT and open it up in more rural areas so I could get one.
The ATT contract can't get over soon enough. - Photar, on 12/13/2008, -2/+5I like the part with the iPhones.
- inactive, on 12/13/2008, -1/+4Cancer on the planet? I think not. You may hate them for their ***** business practices, but they are currently one of the megaestablishments holding up the worlds economy! Imagine if there are no Wal-Marts. Millions of people around the world will have no jobs. If China goes bankrupt who's gonna loan the U.S. money. So yeah, Wal-Mart is a major economic power in the world.
- FriedTurkey, on 12/14/2008, -0/+3The expression is no longer funny 99% of the time.
- aadyss, on 12/13/2008, -1/+4Hating [ to dislike intensely or passionately; feel extreme aversion for or EXTREME hostility toward; detest] a department store....WOW! Is there life on earth anymore?
- Nrvana423, on 12/13/2008, -0/+3The people that walk into Walmart haven't been capable of walking into an Apple store, or up to an AT&T booth in any mall? It isn't going to change the price of it. It is just making it available in one more place.
- BayouBengal, on 12/13/2008, -0/+3The pullover with the front velcro flap meant you were the coolest in middle school.
- solarwind24, on 12/13/2008, -2/+5It was never cool.
- andrewtheart, on 12/14/2008, -1/+44.5 million new phones sold on top of the current base just screams "iPhone Virus" to me. Get ready...
- DiggityCarl, on 12/13/2008, -4/+7elegant commercialism? ***** you
- Slackdragon, on 12/13/2008, -1/+4They're.
- jonahan52, on 12/14/2008, -0/+3Psst.. Wal-Mart has been selling iPods for awhile now.
- andrewtheart, on 12/14/2008, -1/+3That expression is obviously overused -- but saying that it is overused it itself overused, so I don't know what to say
- talkingwires, on 12/13/2008, -1/+3Nope. Not with cable, or satellite, or what have you. But I do watch films.
And before you ask, I don't own a car, either. But I found that Onion article particularly funny because I actually do live in North Carolina, albeit in the mountains on the Western side of the state... - DefiniteFail, on 12/14/2008, -0/+24.5 Million
- CVL4317, on 12/13/2008, -0/+2including the iphone itself.
- Nrvana423, on 12/14/2008, -0/+2I've just never got to use it. It's out of my system now. It will never happen again.
- warriorscot, on 12/13/2008, -0/+2Some people don't want/need a contract.
I for one would snap up a cheap 4gb Iphone if I could get it on my pay as I use service. I want the wifi,GPS and the nice screen. I don't want to pay for it every month. And I don't want to replace my portable media player. I want a phone that I can browse the net using wifi on the go with.
And if walmart and its subsidary companies stock a cheap Iphone there are allot of people including myself that will be buying iphones. - cowboy86, on 12/14/2008, -0/+2If anyone actually bought the iPhone due to "elitism" then they're idiots. I just bought it because it looked fun. Sounds like those people who have no real friends and need conversation pieces because they're socially inept buy it for the "elitism." While the rest of us around at a bar/club scene are talking to people, they sit in the corner playing with their phones thinking how cool they are. I've seen this happen all too much.
- inactive, on 12/14/2008, -0/+2Maybe not if they have to activate AT&T accounts. I would say that , despite being an awesome phone, the iPhone is saddled by the contract with a company that so many people don't care for. Add the fact that Android phones are joining the dance made by several manufacturers and on several different companies plans and that may make this estimate too high.
