- Sparkster185, on 10/11/2007, -36/+100I'd rather have a PS3 for $600.
That's saying something. - faithhealer, on 10/11/2007, -21/+77I tried out an iPhone at a local AT&T outlet this weekend. It's smaller and cooler than I thought it would be. I tried the typing, and it worked better than I thought it would. I went from "tired of the hype" to "wish I had one" in about two minutes.
It's good to know the limitations, though. I'm sure Apple will address many of these issues soon--look how far the iPod has come since it was introduced. - PatrickA, on 10/11/2007, -18/+61Pretty sure we know everything about the iPhone already.......
- Balanced, on 10/11/2007, -3/+37The PS3 has really bad performance as a cell phone, however.
(Sacherii's Dell probably has similar problems.) - darny, on 10/11/2007, -3/+29FTA:
2) AT&T is Evil:
Obviously the author never dealt with verizon... - jackpot, on 10/11/2007, -10/+34You put it that way, a PS3 isn't looking so bad! Linux box, Blu-Ray player, integrated PS1 & PS2 vs. a glorified cell phone with a touchscreen.
- DamageInc, on 10/11/2007, -70/+92#1 thing you should know before you buy the iPhone: Don't buy the iPhone.
- se1zure, on 10/11/2007, -8/+28Am I the only one tired of reading all this crap.
Where are all the:

...
It's a phone for gods sake. If you can justify the price, buy it, if not, don't buy it. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -9/+29#11 Despite the Mac Ads, it will not get you laid.
- Me1000, on 10/11/2007, -8/+26No santa tracker either,
jesus christ! - thcobbs, on 10/11/2007, -9/+26This is all part of being an early adopter... either buy it or not... but know you are getting first run production hardware. THERE WILL BE PROBLEMS.
- Gryffydd, on 10/11/2007, -16/+31#11 No removable storage
#12 It's a locked phone at unlocked phone pricing - tracydanger, on 10/11/2007, -38/+53I've been with at&t for quite a while (years) and have never had any trouble - no problem with coverage. Maybe I'm the exception.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15PS3 buyers had this same argument. Its as untrue now as it was then.
- sacherjj, on 10/11/2007, -7/+21I got my Dell 520N with Ubuntu, 22" 1680x1050 monitor, 4 computer USB AKVM, 2 Gb DDR2 RAM and DL DVD+-RW for under the cost of an iPhone. It just isn't worth it.
- sacherjj, on 10/11/2007, -7/+18But it doesn't instantly make you cool. [/sarcasm]
- unknownunknowns, on 10/11/2007, -21/+31I just got a free phone from AT&T that does half of things in that list that the iPhone doesn't do.
- mharroun, on 10/11/2007, -12/+22Just more lock-in BS.
1) No IM? No problem! Just use text messages... when you run out we rape you for 10c a message!
2) No games? No problem download video poker for only 6.99$!
3) Can't use music for ringtones? Not an issue!!!! Just buy the same song as a ringtone for only 3.99$!!! - totorototoro, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11You can't watch quicktime movies on Apple's website? Thats odd. I am watching one right now.
are you sure you even have an iPhone? :p - sholt, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12But, what if you loaded it with a SIP client, then built a harness and strapped it to your back with a portable nuclear power supply?
BINGO! Instant mobile communications platform. - Ireland, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9One thing you should know before buying a RAZR?
It's a piece of crap. - eescabar, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10With BellSouth--->Cingular--->AT&T, never had any coverage issues any where I have been in the US
- Ireland, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8One thing you should ALSO know after reading this article?
The iPhone is software based, and 90% of these issues can be added or updated via software updates, which Apple already said in their April conference call they be giving at no extra charge. - dcbebop, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9"2) ... This is the company that had managers forcing customers to buy accessories with the iPhone just so they could meet their sales quotas."
I'm no AT&T fanboy but these are rogue shops and not AT&T as a whole. In most cases these stores have been notified by informed customers that these procedures are ILLEGAL (yup, still bastards tho). Just goes to show you how shady people can be. - superkendall, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Some of these "limitations" are kind of silly.... no MMS, sure, but you can email photos you take with the phone to anyone! MMS is a holdover from the days when phones didn't support email well.
I prefer having Google maps than a Garmin that I have as well. Real GPS is nice and all, but the interface to Google maps is just so much better to browse and search the map. Far more often you want to look at a location you are not at, than where you are... the turning direction thing also works pretty well, though mostly I just review the map before a trip to see about where I'll be turning and refer to it once or twice while driving.
Also, the whole thing about it not being a smartphone? I don't know what criteria they have for a device actually being a smartphone, but yes, it's a smartphone. - darkyoshi, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8Perhaps the reason you guys are getting dugg down is because you're insulting everybody around you?
- Skeuomorph, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Contrary to pre-release reports, embedded QuickTime works fine, and not just from Apple.
- NerdyNinja, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Nice to see someone who's willing to change their opinions and admit to it. I don't know what I think of the iPhone yet, but I'm trying to soak in as much of the dissenting opinions as possible. You're the first I've seen who's gone from indifference towards interest.
@ lordtyros - then wait for v2. :) - JimmyIkon, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8My blackberry must be 20th generation and it has problems.
- DaffyDuck, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6You know, up to now, I have NOT been digging iPhone stories to help bring them to the frontpage (check my history) but I think I'm going to start just out of spite for all the aholes here who can't stop complaining long enough to change a ***** setting in their profile to hide Apple stories. I figure there must be some threshhold of pain where you childish haters will just shut up. iPhone stories, here I come!
- ubuwalker31, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6I've had AT&T--->Cingular--->then AT&T again, and while I can say that I haven't been completely satisfied, I have been mostly satisfied with their service. Coverage in the New York City area is fairly good, as long as you have a quad-band phone.
As far as the iPhone goes...I have no reason to buy a phone that doesn't have 3G, or the ability to edit word/excel docs. I am happy with a simple phone, for now. Wake me up when there is a PC/Linux phone that is flexible enough to do everything that I need and isn't crippled. - mygrayarea, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8I've had cingular (now att), sprintpcs, t-mobile, and have used nextel; often having two accounts active at the same time. I travel to some desolate areas and can say with certainty that cingular has the best coverage, followed very closely by t-mobile, with sprint being the crappiest barely getting proper coverage in populated places.
I can also say with certainty that t-mobile provides stellar customer service. You can even call them at 2:00 AM and they will help you with your problems. I never have to wait more than a minute or two to get to a real person. The plans offer the most. And I never have billing problems.
Cingular (att) fouls up my bill so that I have to call every single month to straighten something out. Every phone or plan upgrade means I'm going to spend literally hours fighting with them later just to get what was offered/promised/advertised on the site. - Me1000, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6simple solution
1. Block all apple stories
2. Kill yourself,
if I were you id go with option one, because you can undo it later! - moofree, on 10/11/2007, -10/+15I've been with them for more than 2 years and have had a similar experience.
I don't know why you're getting dugg down... Something tells me it'll happen to me too. - kiddailey, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Nearly all of those can be changed with a software update, and not everyone has problems with AT&T. Informative perhaps, but definitely biased.
- scbajmr, on 10/11/2007, -9/+14I think you're being dugg down because you said something good about AT&T. Digg has a school playground mentality. If you don't conform to what the "collective" believes, you are shunned, no matter how good your argument is. On that note, I have been with AT&T/Cingular/AT&T since 2000. My experience has been good overall, except when I attempted to be a early GSM adopter. That was painful. :)
- darny, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6that's great, how's the interface?
Does motorla regularly release firmware updates that are sent directly to your phone? - onidraky, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Very true, other phones do lack features. My phone lacks most of the features the iPhone does, but it also has stuff the iPhone doesn't. My phone, unlike the iPhone cost $100. The reason everyone bashes the phone is because it is $600 and doesn't need to be. That, and all the hype JUST because it's Apple. Any other company making the same identical phone would be forgotten before it was out.
- sacherjj, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5You are correct. It does transfer money from People to Apple very well.
- brycelb, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4People Please stop. The need to post an article on why you shouldn't buy a phone is comical. Where are the 30 reasons not to buy a blackberry. Gizmodo is laughable. I currently use one of the smaller blackberry phones. I went over to check out the iphone yesterday and was pleasantly surprised. It's smaller than the BB I have which was shocking. It is much higher quality and feels very sturdy unlike every BB on the market. What phone available can compare with the iphone. It has no IM, who gives a *****, I'm not 14 and I would bet that every 14 year old would dump there Sidekick in a heartbeat. These fringe users are not of consequence. I read a review that complained about the email app when the user was getting 200 emails a day. WTF! This is not a valid criticism for a "CONSUMER" device. And as for AT&T, I have been a subscriber to all of the networks, yes all of them. There is absolutely zero difference between them. The network speed issue is valid but a soccer mom is not a geek and she won't give a damn. We heard this same bitching about the ipod.
- Me1000, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3flash is not an open standard!
- bradleyland, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3That's simply not true. MMS is not some magical closed format. You can send an MMS message to anyone with an email address. Try it. I just sent an MMS message to my iPhone from my buddies Blackjack. I can even reply, because his MMS address is shown in the from field:
7725551212@mms.att.com
Obviously that's not his number, but that is the format. If you need to send someone MMS, just add their MMS email to your address book. - mygrayarea, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I hate you for complaining.
- ibis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Okay, using their 10 things, 10 things you should know about the Nokia E61:
1. It's not made by Apple so obviously you can't use ipod accessories
2. You can use it with any GSM carrier
3. It's an "Enterprise" series phone, so doesn't have a camera. You can MMS though.
4. You can IM.
5. Has Exchange and Blackberry support.
6. Can only install 2Gb of memory, but has heaps of games.
7. It is a smartphone.
8. Does 3G or WiFi.
9. No internal GPS but you can use a bluetooth GPS and TomTom. Or with no GPS you can use the Google maps mobile app.
10. Any custom ringtone you want.
That's why people don't do this for other phones. Because ***** like "can't change the ringtone" and "doesn't MMS" hasn't been an issue for any phone at any price made in the last 5 years. - willgonz, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Well, my HP iPAQ smart phone had all that. GPS, Camera with videos, all the bells and whistles. But it is pure crap and that is why I bought an iPhone. The iPhone has limits, but some of these limits could be fixed with a software update. GPS can be added with an external bluetooth adapter, which I rather use anyway.
- Shando, on 10/11/2007, -7/+1011 - It's a waste of ***** money.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3yeah, thats what we are saying.
- WATYF, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4#13 Built in battery.
- JimmyIkon, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5You couldn't pay me $600 to get that 50lb pile of crap. I already have a PS3. it's called a computer.
- etandrib, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3They don't have specs on a commercial because that is stupid marketing. Who cares that it has a 650MHz ARM processor? I don't. I like it because it is simple, smooth, and does what I expect it in the way I expect it. The commercials are actually the best electronic gadget commercials I've ever seen. I expect them to win awards for them too. 15 or 30 second ads are not for details or specs. If you think so you suck or know nothing about marketing on TV.
