- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+364It's tough to say 'weirdest' in Japan. If anything, that's normal
- AirPortPanic, on 10/12/2007, -3/+163This is an image of an 'onsen' in Japan. Hotsprings, similar to turkish baths. Usually they have seperate baths for men and women. Sometimes you can go to a private onsen and go with your partner of the opposite sex. It's really a great relaxing thing, imagine sitting in a hot tub drinking sake and looking over the mountains or ocean. In ancient Japan guys and girls all bathed together, it was only later that western civilization influenced them to seperate the boys and girls.
- nailPuppy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+136I think you need to spend more time on the internet if you think that is the weirdest picture in Japan.
- gcnaddict, on 10/12/2007, -9/+145It's Jobs and Gates in a scene most people don't care to see.
- Elephant789, on 10/12/2007, -11/+135I don't get it. Why is it weird? The monkey?
- sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -22/+135It's like they're the Kevin and Alex of Japan.
- Sidicas, on 10/12/2007, -10/+88Two men bathing together in Japan is not unusual... In fact, it isn't uncommon for 20+ men to bathe together.. You've never heard of a bathhouse? You've never seen Spirited Away or Memoirs of a Geisha or any of thousands of other Japanese movies with strong cultural ties? Usually men bathe together and women bathe together, but unlike Memoirs of a Geisha, men and women do NOT bathe together.. At least, not unless it's an Anime called Love Hina or something..
- marnaq, on 10/12/2007, -4/+66The monkey is a metaphor for us, the users.
- megaloid, on 10/12/2007, -5/+63Okay. Since I am a giant Japanese monster, I can speak authoritatively about the significance of the monkey in the pool.
You must understand that while stomping across the countryside of Japan, I frequently observe rhesus monkeys furtively dipping into volcanic hot springs while humans are doing the same. Since the Japanese are a fastidious people and object to the presence of hairy primates with their bacteria-laden fur, in their beloved pools, they entice the monkeys back out of the pool by imitating the grooming behavior of said monkeys, a ploy which, owing to the universally-known law of "monkey see, monkey do," never fails to have the desired effect upon the hairy, red-faced interlopers. The ever-fastidious Japanese then utter thanks to whatever spirit watches over that particular pool, take several tablets of chlorine from an alcove in the shrine, and toss them ritually into the pool. Then, with the monkeys now utterly distracted by their grooming, the humans catch them unawares, suddenly jumping with a roar like Susano, back into the pool, the invevitable result being that the monkeys depart the vicinity of the pool with a shriek and completely forget about entertaining any notion of a swim for at least fifteen minutes.
So, you see, it is clear from the illustration that Steve Jobs and Bill Gates are well-acquainted with the customs of the Japanese.
I hope that clarifies things a bit. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -14/+71Brokeback Bathhouse! *eek*
- FunkyChicken, on 10/12/2007, -4/+45The only thing remotely weird about it is that it looks like Steve Jobs and Bill Gates hanging out together at a bathhouse. :) - And that alone is only somewhat funny.
Otherwise, I don't get what's so 'INCREDIBLY weird?' about that picture. Geesh. - yongfookathome, on 10/12/2007, -1/+39JAPANESE TRANSLATION:
The two big words say:
Kyoyuu - "share"
Kyozon - "coexist"
It's talking about Mac/Intel/Windows. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+34NOT ENOUGH CAPS IN TITLE
- expatasia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+30Yawn....zzzzzzzzzzZZZZZZZ
I live in Japan. If you think this is the weirdest thing in Japan then you need to get out more. This isn't the weirdest thing anywhere, let alone Japan. Just go to any magazine section at any konbini (convenient store) and you'll see 10 times more weird. Turn on the TV here and see 100 times more weird. - syco123, on 10/12/2007, -1/+30Odd as it might seem to a sexually and socially repressed society like ours, not every all male bath house is gay. In the picture the man is washing his friends back and is a form of social interaction and not sexual.

- ayeroxor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21Bukkake is a style of Japanese art. I recommend doing a google image search.
- LiveFastDieOld, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Um, it's not the gayness that's getting this Dugg. It's weird because it's Bill Gates giving Steve Jobs a massage. Which, c'mon, is a little weird.
- Ahnteis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15To some people EVERYTHING is gay looking.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13"I'm sure many friendships have started in this exact situation."
Actually, lots of business meetings happen this way in Japan. It makes the interaction between parties more honest and open as they symbolically (and physically) have nothing to hide. - urpwnd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13If you've ever been to a Japanese bath before, either the ones that are nothing but a bath, or the ones that are in hotels and stuff, you will see that sometimes they have staff members that will wash your back for you. It's not any more erotic that getting a normal massage either. Some people must have repressed anxiety towards being touched by other people. Either way, it doesn't make this weird.
In fact, the showing of these men together in the bath shows that they are probably friends. Public bathing in Japanese society has long standing roots in the culture. For example, the concept of you being naked in a bath with strangers shows that you are just as vulnerable as they are, and that you might as well relax and enjoy the hot water. There are many anecdotes of this in stories of samurai as well. They have no armor, or their sword, in the bath. They are just men in a bath together, so they might as well be polite and friendly. I'm sure many friendships have started in this exact situation. - ElectricSoup, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13"I don't get it. Why is it weird? The monkey?"
That has to be Ballmer. - gcnaddict, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17He clearly hasn't seen some of the latest hentai to hit the streets of Akihabara.
- Induane, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I'm pretty sure anyone with any google skills at all could top that. Here is what I found looking for weird japanese stuff:

An octopus going down on a chick - I'm going to go out on a limb here and say its weirder than this articles image. - Zaetha, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12"I don't get it. Why is it weird? The monkey?"
The monkey is Steve Ballmer. Jobs and Gates are just keeping him away from their chairs.

- urpwnd, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12same sex public bathing is commonplace in Japan. I don't quite get why this is weird either. In Japan, before you get into the bath, you clean yourself off *outside the tub* so that when you get in, you don't dirty the water. The tub is for soaking and relaxing, not washing off. It is also quite common to ask another man that is bathing to help you wash your back since it's something that isn't easy for everyone to do. The monkey in the tub is funny, but not really all that weird either, because there are mountain hot springs in Japan that the native monkeys happen to like sitting in too.
- saxonthebeach, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8More Fully:
The title from the small text to the red and white boxes reads:
"Mac and Windows' wise cooperation in the Intel Mac era." ("Intel Mac" refers to the recent switch to intel hardware)
Red vertical text reads:
"What to expect for file extensions, fonts, file services, etc. here!" - aristotle0dude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7This is similar to the Sauna in Finnish culture. Many business meetings have taken place in Saunas. When you are naked, you are vulnerable and more likely to be honest in your dealings with other people.
It is quite sad now twisted and repressed Anglo-Saxon culture is. - hooksie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Look closer, its Steve Jobs and Bill Gates.
- hafniOum, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Gates seems pretty much enjoying it....

- panicofficer, on 10/12/2007, -12/+17It may have something to do with Windows being subservient to Apple. An example of this would be in sumo where the lower ranks have to assist in bathing the higher ranks:

i think it must be a ad about how apple/ms/intel can coexist now (intel based mac with parallel/bootcamp running xp/vista) - djdole, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Not remotely Digg-worthy.
But definitely worth marking as inaccurate.
For many reasons too, but my top two reasons are:
1. Submitter obviously doesn't understand Japanese cultural traditions.
2. If the submitter thinks that is the "WEIRDEST" picture in japan!!!!!, then he/she has obviously never seen the Japanese "Fisherman's Wife" painting ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Dream_of_the_fishermans_wife_hokusai.jpg ).

- TheZorch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This whole thing has been lost in translation.
The Japanese are a very social people. Their culture is unlike anything seen in the Western world and their ways may seem rather strange to us. The culture of Japanese bath houses is on such place where we're left scratching out heads.
On the male side of a bath house, a man letting another man scrub his back is a sign of respect ... not homosexuality. On the women's side of a bath house, a woman letting another woman scrub her back is a sign of friendship and trust, and can even mean that the two women are either sisters or best friends. Bathing together like this is commonplace for the Japanese. Traditional bathing practice in Japan is to bath out of the tub with cold water and then soak in a hot tub after rinsing off. In Tokyo, bath hoiuse soaking tubs are kept really hot. To Westerners its almost to the point of scalding. That's why you'll see a lot of old men at Tokyo Bath Houses, because the really hot water sooths pains in the body.
I'm not Japanese and I'm no expert on their culture but I do know a great deal about them. Also, being Gay in Japanese Society carries with it a terrible stigma that is worse than that in the West. For teenagers found out to be gay, most families would disown them and remove them from the Family Registry ... effectively taking away their family name and making them a Ronin. Ronin can be translated in two ways; either as a samurai without a clan (meaning he was thrown out of his or lost his in a war), or it can mean a student who is retaking college entrance exams. Its hard for a clanless Ronin to find work in Japan or a place to stay. In more modern times things are changing slowly but the old cultural biases are still very strong in Japanese society despite progress. - galore, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Oh no. Two old guys where one is rubbing the others back.
The horror!!!
Maybe it is weird that some Americans find this "gay" or "weird". I think it is less weird than men in the USA wearing over-the-knee-long swimming "trunks" because they are sooooo afraid to display their male body (or worse, appear "gay").
What a bunch of prude repressed insecure dudes.
God Bless. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+41749 Digg readers say Yes.
