There's an app for that. - ShAuNiEcHuLo, on 07/01/2009, -0/+12in all seriousness... I'm hoping it won't mess up on translation and say something in a rude or derogatory way. Or even misinterpret what's being said by voice. The last thing I'd want, is to say "I really like Venice", and have it completely misinterpreted and translated on the spot for everyone to hear.
- diggduggDOOM, on 07/01/2009, -0/+12My hovercraft is full of eels.
My nipples explode with delight. - convergent, on 07/01/2009, -0/+11Unless I'm worse at Arabic than I thought, the English was translated intoformal Arabic. Hopefully they have a choice between formal and slang.
- Rouis, on 09/30/2009, -0/+9The book points out that the Babel Fish could not possibly have developed naturally, and therefore proves the existence of God as its creator. However, as Man points out, God needs faith to exist, and this proof dispels the need for faith, therefore causing God to vanish "in a puff of logic".
Babelfish - http://tinypic.com/r/efsbwo/5 - Ansem, on 07/01/2009, -0/+7Yeah this looks really cool.
Dugg also for Spock. - inactive, on 07/01/2009, -0/+7"I'm hoping it won't mess up" - Other man looks up at clouds..
- AWBoy666, on 07/01/2009, -4/+10If voice dialing on the 3GS is any evidence, the app will end up translating San Diego into whale's vagina.
Seriously, it sucks. - backwardscompat, on 07/26/2009, -0/+6Let's just hope that this does as much good as it does in theory.
- nullcodes, on 07/01/2009, -0/+5I'd be fine with a translator that has a few thousand phrases in it (and allows me to fill in proper nouns).
Basically if I want to say:
"Where's a payphone around here?"
I should be able to speak or type it in .. and then if the exact phrase is not in the database (point being I don't want to go digging in the database for what I want to say .. also want to make sure the direct translation isn't rudely presented or insulting), be presented with a bunch of "nearest guess" similar canned phrases (in english, for example "How do i get to the nearest payphone?") .. then I just select the phrase I want .. and it can say and show it in the target language.
It should also have this facility in reverse so that someone who speaks a foreign language can communicate to me.
Is there an existing translator that works like that? - fluidfoundation, on 07/01/2009, -0/+4Yet still no hoverboard.
- woofers07, on 07/01/2009, -0/+4It seems the best way around this would be translating it into your chosen language, then translating that back into english text. Giving you an "OK" button before it blurts out whatever. I'm guessing that I'm not the only one that thought of this though.
- RobotBuddha, on 07/01/2009, -0/+4This is what I love about the time we live in. In the bible, there's so many lists of dreams for things we wish. The greatest aspirations for humanity. Things like healing the sick, increased longevity, and the ability to speak any language on earth. And we're getting there. We're actually managing to make these wishes into reality. It's an amazing time to live.
- mrBitch, on 07/02/2009, -0/+3Dug for Team America ref.
- Anevilweasel, on 07/01/2009, -0/+3actually i've been quite amazed at how accurate Voice Control on the iPhone is...the only time I've had trouble is when I make a mistake with the control words. Otherwise the recognition has been nearly flawless for me. I was expecting the ***** voice recognition that has come with several previous apps trying to do the whole voice dialing thing.
Have you considered that maybe you are saying whale's vagina instead of San Diego when you talk? You might have serious brain damage. You should get it checked out. - chriswastaken, on 10/27/2009, -0/+3The future is now?!?! I'm late I'm late I'm late . . pack your things hunny . . . I'm late!
- MastaQ, on 07/01/2009, -0/+3Awesome, I think the military has had this tech for a while, glad to see it available for everyone (well, if they have an iPhone or Blackberry at least). Hopefully we'll see more language (and mobile OS) support in the near future.

"SUGOI!!! KAWAII DESU NE?!?!" - solid12345, on 07/01/2009, -0/+2Does it add "God Willing" at the end of every sentence?
- yngtimmy, on 07/01/2009, -0/+1Imagine if it could help nerds talk to hot women! That would be the day.
- Cojafoji, on 07/01/2009, -0/+1Pretty cool. Dugg for the precursor of the UT.
- NoNotReally, on 07/01/2009, -0/+1I'm really looking forward to this! Who knows, in a couple of years most languages will be available with this app.
So glad this was featured on digg instead of something useless like the autotune app
or something even worse... Translator app with Autotune. - EULANr43, on 07/01/2009, -0/+1http://www.MPUT.net
Multi Person Universal Translator
free. - digitalpencil, on 07/01/2009, -0/+1Hopefully it works well with regional dialects/accents. I'm from up North and can't get the ***** Virgin Rail automated booking system to understand a word i say..
- saxquiz, on 07/02/2009, -0/+1lol, if you know the word for "God" in Arabic you can understand at least half of everything that's said.
- moonmonkey, on 07/08/2009, -0/+1Im sure they will be able to cover the trouble up nicely.
- BrownieMix, on 07/01/2009, -0/+1It's certainly effective, however the issue of grammar is going to pop up. Arabic and English grammar is much different, a lot like English and Japanese grammar.
- slide2k, on 07/01/2009, -0/+1This should help the troops a lot... then again, if it doesn't translate correctly it could spell t-r-o-u-b-l-e.
- weeFred, on 07/01/2009, -0/+1I'm sure google has something like this in the works, they have speech to text already, they demo'd google translate on android at I/O and they also demo'd the text to speech library. I'm sure we'll see this from google in the next couple of months.
- iDoraemon, on 07/01/2009, -5/+6* The best voice recognition systems are still highly constrained.
* The best machine translation software is still far from perfect to get non-retarded translations.
* The best setup to achieve even decent dual voice recognition and machine translation functionality requires a PC/laptop equipped with a microphone headset.
Therefore, this iPhone application must really suck. - fishamble, on 07/01/2009, -0/+0I can see it now. A remote corner of the Amazonian rainforest. First contact with the wild natives.
Working...
"Hey guys, do you know where i can some weed around here?" - LuisDal, on 07/16/2009, -0/+0Speech Recognition Software is more popular now. Take a look at
http://www.111download.com/product/wave-to-text-v. ... - crazysamz, on 07/01/2009, -1/+1I loved that movie!
(if you don't know what we're talking about, you need to look in the comedy section a bit more at your blockbuster)(or netflix if you enjoy online streaming, but you probably don't if you hadn't seen that movie by now) - inactive, on 07/01/2009, -1/+1Cool. I really need something to translate into arabic. Probably the worlds most popular language these days if you get my drift... get a ***** grip!
- lostngone, on 07/01/2009, -2/+2I want a Japanese to engrish translator for my iPhone....
- saxquiz, on 07/02/2009, -0/+0I'm sure it does. Google translate can't translate Arabic into English and vice versa without it being messed up so I guarantee this thing can't do it.
- saxquiz, on 07/02/2009, -0/+0Arabs all understand formal Arabic. It doesn't really matter if it only puts it into standard Arabic as long as it can take the Arabic dialects and turn them into English. I really think tool only works for simple phrases though.
- crazysamz, on 07/01/2009, -2/+1PSP already came out with this like 3 years ago, it was called talkman. And it supported more languages. But it's great that something like it is coming to iphone, it's just not anything new, even in the portable space.
- serif69, on 07/01/2009, -2/+1I helped Apple wreck a nice beach.
- IShouldBeWorkin, on 07/01/2009, -5/+3these comments suck.
- justdru, on 07/01/2009, -5/+3I hope it can capture Arabic and convert it to English! Then I can have conversations with people and neither of us have any idea what the other one is saying!
- truman48, on 07/01/2009, -5/+2All I want to translate in Arabic is "Where can I get a smoke and a pancake?"
- ivan423, on 07/01/2009, -7/+1wall-e and johnny 5 look a lot alike. total rip off.
