- shrader, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24Yes the keyboard works, just the brightness, volume, and other function and Eject keys won't work without drivers.
- OriginalGamer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25I installed it yesterday and with the exception of some of the drivers, it does indeed work. Before this build the only way to install Vista on a Macintel was to delete the EFI firmware, which crippled your Mac for firmware updates and other firmware related functions. If you want a copy it's out on torrent but you'll need a key from the public Beta 2 to activate it. If you don't have a key, the public RC1 is coming in early September.
- Jeffrey903, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22BootCamp is much more then an OS selector. The Intel Macs don't have a BIOS, they have an EFI, which is Intels attempt at updating the 20 year old BIOS. Windows does not support EFI, and it was originally supposed to be supported by Vista, but Microsoft pulled that out (surprise surprise). BootCamp bypasses the need for Windows to have a BIOS, in addition to allowing the user to select their OS of choice at startup. When you install BootCamp, you also create a CD of drivers for Windows. These drivers work very well with Windows XP, but Vista has some crazy driver requirements and that is why they do not all work in Vista.
- jotux, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18It takes a while to interpret your poor spelling and grammar...give them time.
- brendanc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17He has a valid point. Don't digg him down. Personally if I could afford a Macbook Pro, I'd be using one, and I need Vista and XP to be able to test and support IE as the main browser for the websites I work on. Most companies WILL NOT roll out Vista for their employees because it will most likely mean new computers and/or a wipe of the XP install. Something most employees will not go through. Early adopters such as myself would probably be fine with it, but XP is too ingrained into the office environment to be replaced in a very short time.
Oh yeah, and most offices won't ever switch to Macs. That's just the way it's going to be. I know that my current workplace wouldn't, thats for damn sure. The people there are so beaurocratic and set in their ways that if I brough it up, I'd lose all credibility. - marscom, on 10/12/2007, -17/+34Brilliant - not that there would be any reason to run vista when you have OS-X, but this is so useful for webdevs/programmers, this is ace.
- kethraal, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18"Your telling me precious precious quicktime 1080 P content can't play on a less then 1 year old iMAC?"
If he is, he's as knowledgable as you. I have a Mac Mini -- with a relatively slow G4, it is far less powerful than the G5 iMac. The mini plays 1080p just fine. Granted, you won't be able to encode 1080p at real-time rates, but that's another story.
Trust me when I say this: the iMac G5 is more than capable of decoding and displaying H.264 at 25fps.
Somehow, I think bi0metric is just trolling... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15"Apple fans don't diss vista"
So all the flames from mac fanboys and cult members I've seen bashing vista were all just in my imagination? - NeoRicen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Looks like in the future I'll be running Leopard and Vista, so glad I got an Intel Mac.
- sKiLLa182, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Because Vista plays games.
- brendanc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11You mean way too many Ubuntu stories?
*Runs for asbestos suit* - mikew101, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Because whether we like it or not MS Windows is still the standard in corporate America. Gaming on the mac is lacking, and for me I use windows also for compatibility testing.
- neko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Yeah, they should have like, a category for these things, then people could read about what they wanted to read.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10And vista can run the latest Photoshop without Rosetta.
- manfesto, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Boot Camp is a package encompassing a CSM (EFI Compatibility Support Module - in short, it allows the Intel Mac's EFI to perform hardware calls just as a BIOS would, allowing legacy OSs like Windows to boot and function), a custom bootloader (for choosing between OS X and Windows on boot), and a set of Windows XP drivers for the hardware. Apparently, not all of the drivers work properly under Vista however - those for the iSight and the keyboard. If I had to guess, I'd say that this means that you won't be able to use the iSight (given) and the specialized keyboard shortcuts (i.e. right Apple key + click = right click and fn + backspace = delete - these things were provided by the Boot camp 1.1 driver package), but the keyboard should work just fine otherwise.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -11/+19@bi0metric
lol you're a Vista humper lol since alpha - virtualball, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I think what he means is that you're getting two OS's for the price of one. So basically the Mac laptop is $550 and the Windows one is $550. *shrug*
- combatchuck, on 10/12/2007, -13/+20Am I the only one who saw the humor in that?
- markormesher, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Wait, so even though when it was in alpha you weren't able to install outside (non-microsoft) software, some how with your magic you had it working ONE HUNDRED percent with photoshop and Half Life 2? God damn you're good!
- TheCount, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"some people are just douche-bags with an ISP."
I think you should have said, Some people are just douche-bags ESPECIALLY with an ISP. The difference may be subtle, but it's there.
That being said, I'm far too cynical to consider myself either a Windows fanboy or an Apple fanboy. Neither one is perfect, and I don't buy into hype. What I will say is that there have been times when I have frustrated by both, and I always find it amazing that anyone can claim either Windows or OSX as flawless.... they simply aren't, and will never be. - mikew101, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11This is great news. As a mac user I am thrilled to know that I will be using my operating system of choice, but will also be able to play with and install vista which I would like to use for Microsoft Sparkle which I think is going to be a great application.
- rosebot, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10He meant what he said. "not all the drivers PROVIDED in Boot Camp will work".
5 seconds of research on Boot Camp will tell you it provides drivers... - Dari, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5My G4 Mini also plays 1080p video just fine. It might slow down -a little- but it's pretty smooth.
- Kerr, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Yes if you look at the screenshot I took you will see that there is full Aero support.
- SuperSunny, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I'm waiting for Photoshop Cs3 release so it's native, because I've always loved photoshop usage under a Mac, but I'll be installing Vista soon, since I've wanted to see how the game improvements go on it
- DocNo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@zedwards
So just because the majority doesn't agree with you "democracy is overrated"?!?
How progressive of you.... - virtualball, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Beta 2 was a public Beta. This new build is for testers only, but like every other build, it has been leaked to bit torrent sites. If you want it, Im not going to provide a link, its a quick search, but remember, even though a beta; this is still stealing an OS and it is still wrong :
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Glad to know that you liked Vista too ;)
- nomore, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Wow, what a revelation!
Seriously, even Magic Menu on the Amiga has had translucent windows/menus that blur the background - for over a decade: http://akf.jinak.cz/software/utilitky/mm2.jpg
Nothing new to see here. - NeoRicen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If you have BootCamp and are booted into windows ALL windows apps are compatible, fully and running at 100% speed.
- DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4There is a link called "Add or Remove Topics."
You don't have to see Apple stories if you don't want to. If Digg didn't have a seperate Apple section then you would have no choice. - nomore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3G5 is faster than the Core Solo. In fact, my G5 iMac at work plays 1080p quicktime video perfectly smooth.
- SuperSunny, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8Um...no one has started an arguement or fight here, please don't start one biometric. Apple fans don't diss vista, I've almost never seen that happening. No one here so far has really dissed anything.
You can call me an apple hunter, but I prefer to use both. Windows has some applications that can't run properly with darwine, so I use windows for that. Also for gaming, and game editing as I do game development. I use OS X for everything else. Any problem? I'm not in the dirt, neither is almost anyone else. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7I actually have been running a lot of Windows XP lately, not because I prefer it over XP, but I do a lot of Counter-Strike so I'm better off keeping XP booted up. Not to mention that Rosetta runs Photoshop like ass
- zoomman101, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7@biometric, if you hate macs so much why do you read and comment the apple stories?
- Wavey, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Wow, all of these comments are going way under my head...
- PrettyBoyFloyd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yes, the Vista beta 2 was available for public download from Microsoft for only about 3 weeks and you had to register (and open a Microsoft Passport account) to participate in the program, but of course, that beta and several others are all available on various bittorrent sites, so you can still get it (just don't activate it unless you have an activation crack I don't know about). That gives you a 14 day period where you can play around with Vista all you want, but it will nag you to activate at day 15 and won't allow you to log in until you activate. The full registered (and activated) beta 2 will work unil May 31, 2007.
If there is a working activation crack out there, you may be able to get the OS working until next May, but the one I tried failed miserably and left me with an unbootable machine. Thankfully, a good friend provided me with an internal DVD of the 5384 build that is working just fine.
also see previous DIgg story about getting a free dvd from India - da233, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3That transparent windows look REALLY cool. They blur out whatever it is behind them as well.
- j_bellone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The applications will work fine on the Macbook with Bootcamp. Drivers on the other hand are where the problem lies (and precisely why the Vista support isn't up to par yet). You're going to have to wait on Apple for driver updates for most of your hardware.
- Vermifax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I run Mac OS X 10.4.7 (Tiger) on my Mac Pro.
No need for anything else. - autoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Apple provides them with bootcamp updates.
- iAlex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2YES AT LEAST WITHOUT DELETING EFI PARTIONS?! WAHOOOOO!!!!! :D :D :D
- f3l1x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@zybch
Exactly, those were cult members. Fans are one thing.. ***** zealots are another. It's not whether someone is an apple or microsoft fan... some people are just douche-bags with an ISP. - sonictonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Can someone please help me out and tell me how/where I can get Windows Vista Beta 2? I'm just a regular Joe Shmoe and I was under the impression the beta versions of Vista have only been available to people invited to participate in testing... Am I wrong?
Thanks... :)~ - NeoRicen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well Apple gives you all the drivers to start with, havent tried updating them yet myself.
- TheCount, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How are you getting both for the price of one? You think OSX isn't included in the price of their machines?
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Damn, it works on your HP pavilion? My older pavilion's doesn't have a graphics card to support it.. (integrated video)
- donatj, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2eh, I get snags playing high rez video on my dual core mini 2 gigs ddr
- jrbrewin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1macbook pro, bought at the weekend
bootcamp downloaded at the weekend
bootcamp driver cd created yesterday
vista pre-rc1 installed yesterday
bootcamp driver cd run, mainly failed
keyboard function keys did not work, and system tray icon does not work
can that information be any more up-to-date?
I was however, impressed, that practically everything else DID work, including accelerated video, sound, wireless, networking. my performance profile came out at 4.1/5 - brentzilla, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7Actually, it really wasn't all that funny. Sorry. Jokes like that are just getting really old and I, for one, am glad they get dugg down before I even get to the page. If you hadn't commented about it, I wouldn't have read it...and I like it that way.
