- kaje, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Sony is clearly a terrorist.
- zweben, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16This just in:
Laptop user tells Virgin Atlantic to go screw themselves. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10"aaaz" has three ***** stories on the frontpage right now. But hey, theres no problem with the digg top users, right?
- aeiou, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I think this is quite strange. They say they are taking these measures until there is a solution for them. THERE ALREADY IS ONE!! Those batteries have been recalled. At least give the travelers an oportunity to prove that they have received a new battery or that their laptop is not effected!
- zweben, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10So you're plotting to destroy your own plan? Genius!
- berfmurret, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7thats a little strange. maybe they didnt do their homework. macbook and mbp models use a completely different battery than the g4 series. which were the ones experiencing the problems and the ones that were issued the recall.
- PathDaemon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6You tell them... and wait for the fun.
They really should have a serial number list, but I doubt it. - skellener, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Um, so what if you have a replaced battery? How do they know?
- lnxaddct, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If I remember correctly... the only Apple products that are effected are older powerbooks. The airline is being a little ridiculous :/
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4aaaz's article that was on the front page hours ago was dumped off the front page by Digg(TM) (and the help of other Digg users that give a *****) because he Duped spiderland's original post. Some people might have missed that info because my first comment at the top of this page was modded down.
Unfortunately Digg(TM) did nothing to prevent "aaaz" from re-posting "spiderland's" original article hours later. until this issue is corrected why should any "low ranking user with few friends" even bother to submit articles.... when we just get pissed on by people like "aaaz" - Dragular, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3First class and the like have outlets to allow you to plug your laptop in on most Virgin flights.
I would immediately follow with "Thus, screwing the poor," but if you have a laptop AND you're flying... y'kno... you really can't get by with that. - tybris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Virgin is the third airline...
- shadesfox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I thought that the MacBooks and MacBook Pros were fine on the battery?
- jonnyeh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why not just check the battery to see if it has a recalled serial #, jeez.
- xtreme777, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That is pretty dumb. Only certain models are affected. I guess it would take too long to screen them all. Oh well. I usually sleep on flights anyway.
- Seidoger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Dragular:
I'm a student, and i've been on flights with my PowerBook y'know!
It's quite fun!
Apples on a plane - omaryak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sounds like discrimination to me. It's unfair to coach flyers who might have had their battery replaced. Not to mention, MacBooks and MacBook Pros were not included in the overheating battery recall.
- ajwitte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@spiralspirit - dirty secret about grounded electrical sockets: TWO of the pins of a normal 3-pin electrical socket are grounded. They are connected together at the building's fuse box (though I believe the cool kids call fuse boxes "load centers" nowadays). I imagine that it works similarly on a plane: the neutral and ground are just wired together and connected to the neutral side of the inverter or whatever supplies the power.
- samdu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1MacBooks don't have battery issues. They have other issues, but they aren't going to blow up.
- visability, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2that was the worst slippery slope argument i've ever seen
- BWhaler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hey, I understand it's safety first, so I am not going to hammer Virgin. They are a great company.
But I use the Mac, so I've got to cancel that upper class ticket to London from SFO next week. $12K out of Virgin's pocket.
But I suspect they knew things like this would happen, and they prioritized safety first.
That's why, when this ban has passed, I'll fly them again. - jake8689, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1to make fair have all laptop batteries taken out
- MiDri, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@spiralspirit - Devices that convert AC to DC (anything with an internal or external "wallwart") do not need the ground on AC -- I am not sure if anything REALLY needs the ground -- maybe something with a very high wattage...
- Seidoger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1With an IPOD you need that new battery, called BATTERY
- Jonsey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They are, which would make me mad if I was told to remove my battery from my MacBook.
- davidepaula, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1That is because Mac are waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than PCs. Macs, better than PCs, but useless in airplanes!
- cybercat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2So if you can't take the battery for your laptop with you, what's the point of taking your laptop as a carry-on at all? Do they have outlets on the plane you can use? Is it just so you can feel like it's not going to get stolen out of your luggage?
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Terrorists dont care if they die.l..
- antdude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"Virgin Atlantic has become the third airline to restrict the use of Apple and Dell laptop batteries on its flights." Who is the third airline? I know Korean Airlines was mentioned in the article.
- Linh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1considering Sony is the manufacturer of the battery, seems kind of stupid to ban all dell/apple laptops.
- MiDri, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Do they even check ipods and the like when you get on planes? how does that work? Those suckers got a lot of empty space in them if you open it up and move the hd a little.
- CypherXero, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1They don't have grounds in planes (duh). It's there so when you go to plug in your 3-prong power brick for your laptop, you don't have any issues.
- spiralspirit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Many planes have a special "car-style" plug in, although I've only seen that in business class.
I have heard from someone that a larger plane he was on (747?) actually had regular american style 3 prong receptacles (strange because there is no ground in the air). Don't know how reliable the info is though.
Also, I am more comfortable taking my $2000 laptop with me and knowing it is safe rather than packing it in my luggage and hoping it gets there in one piece. - MiDri, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1You can charge your battery on a plane -- most people in business class do just that.
- kilofox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0What am I missing here about this front page thing? Is there some kind of "glory" or bragging rights about "your" article making it to the front page? Is there a competiion going on? Why should anyone with half-a-life give a damn?
- NightRush, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2But the MacBook battery wasnt recalled, just select ones from the MacBook Pro line...
- UnknownRelic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0RTFA
"Like Korean Air, which recently instituted its own battery ban, Virgin Atlantic isn't preventing such notebook owners from operating their laptops, but it is limiting them to seat-side power supplies. Flying coach or economy without an in-seat power supply? Then you can't use your Apple or Dell machine." - scully8746, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5Amen! Apple has already replaced my batteries.
- PathDaemon, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2No.
- SirZRX, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2LOL
- Derfus, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1i wouldnt want a battery exploding in flight, good for them. can you imagine?
- Semitallsmalls, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1when are they going to finally invent laptops powered by crying babies. In flight power would be plentiful. Add to the list farts because for some reason the guy sitting next to me always has to blow it up. ok, fine it was me.
- ohmar, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3Its amazing this was the top headline about 8 hours ago, yet the same story has come up again...
- TekMage, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0the stupid part of this is that the only way that they explode is if they're being recharged, not when they're on a 7 hour drain mode on a flight. They're just AA batteries inside anyway, this is stupidity chasing a clue.
- titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1@bgoodknight, if you don't like a user having front page stories then tough, bury the or whatever, it's a social community, community Diggs what they like and Dugg his stories because they like them (although the duping is a bit lame.)
- Toastydoc, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Isn't there a line of Macs that don't let you pull the battery? Whats next, pull the battery out of IPODS?
- m1ss1ontomars, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1this is some ***** up with which we will not put.
use your laptops anyway, people. - titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1Microsoft is Bush right?
- drrlvn, on 01/18/2009, -12/+4I don't think it's personal...
Anyway, dugg this one and buried the dup :) - shiftt, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1this ***** was on the front page just this morning, how hard is it to scroll down?
