- ravi7791, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12they should've slapped in the click wheel on the remote rather than the clicking buttons. I get kinda annoyed clicking thru menus after a while in front row :/
- Masna, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I don't know why, but the guy who recorded the video's constant loud breathing made me really uncomfortable.
- wingnut21, on 10/12/2007, -9/+18Oh, this came out already?
*Yawn.* - pkulak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8The settings at the end actually answered a lot of my lingering questions. Would have maybe been nicer if they got there quicker and stayed longer, but very interesting nonetheless.
- geoken, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12They should have used a grid style menu like Windows Media Center. Having a grid style menu makes the most of the d-pad style controller. A list style menu works on the iPod because the screen is small and the interface device is built for scrolling, but on a larger screen it doesn't make sense to have someone scroll through a 40 entry menu.
- geoken, on 10/12/2007, -9/+15Are you serious? Windows Mail is Outlook Express. It looks exactly like outlook express. What part of it did they 'copy' off Apple? And if you think they copied the Calendar you must have never used Outlook at any point in this decade.
- kilofox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6for years w/XBMC... except play h.264, and if I remember you still have to get off the couch to turn your old XBOX on or off.... oh and wireless streaming too. Yep you are way into the future.

Fergie? Nickleback?? For shaaaame. - MioTheGreat, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8If they did copy it, they obviously weren't paying close enough attention. Media Center has a very nice interface. This....is just, bleh.

- yabos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Uhh, are you blind? Windows media center is all blue, this isn't.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Heres a thought .................
Apple TV - 299.99
Microsoft Xbox 360 Core System - 299.99 ( no need for HD )
Hook 360 as an extender to your Media Center PC ( download that off the net for free or use the latest Linux MCE thats free ) or if you own Vista even better
your choice of course. Download Transcode360 ( free coding and streaming content program ) from your PC ( whatever content you purchased, downloaded free or ripped to PC hard-drive ) and stream it freely wirelessly or router connected to your Xbox360......
If you use Linux MCE the cost is still only 299.99 for the exact same thing that Apple TV is offering. As iTunes works on PC's too. You can stream downloaded content to you Xbox360. This post was just to point out you could have a decent gaming system and the same uses this Apple TV garbage offers up. Whats better is you don't need to have a high speed connection to do this either. You can create your own Lan wireless to your Xbox360 to stream date to it. Just use your PC to hold and dock the stored data. And with Microsoft Live( same as Xbox Live ) out in a coupe of months. The possibilities are endless with this configuration.
A 360 System and a Media Based extender all in one for 299.99 the same price as the Rotten Apple TV
I guess we all know what the cost effective and best choice would be. At least you don't need a HDMI or DIV connection with the 360 in order to do what the
Apple TV needs and requires you to have in order to hook it up !!
Nuff said. - MioTheGreat, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Wow.
Media Center is just....nicer. - SteaminTmann, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9annnd.... not impressed.. at all... been doing this for years w/ XBMC
- Jaymoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Substitute _Windows_ Media Center
for _Xbox_ Media Center...
It seriously looks/acts/plays just like my Xbox... o.O - cleverboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's interesting. Lately, I've been looking at Vista Media Center playing through the XBox 360.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4itNWe27d38
It's clear Microsoft has a much more rounded and perhaps SUPERIOR product than Apple (for its great interface and officially supported media handling: recordings, file support, etc), but its hidden behind tons and tons and TONS of system requirements. It's really disgusting.
I mean, you can't get an XBox Core system ($299) and hope to download videos from XBox Live with any usefulness, you need a hard drive of the Premium system ($399). Moreover, you're still without wireless networking (wired in with your ethernet) until you get the Xbox Wireless Networking Adapter, 802.11g and lower... (+$99). You might also consider picking up the Universal remote as well (+$29), because otherwise, you'll be trapped leaping through a lot of menus.
--Then, for Windows, you can't use XP Pro, you really need to have a Media Center OS, prefereably Vista Media Center, and if you really want the best Media Center OS with network support for your home office machine, you should consider making it the Vista Ultimate upgrade (+$259.95). Once you've got all that cleared up, you're very likely looking at almost $800 in hardware and software you didn't have yet... just to get everything comparable to Apple TV's out of the box *basic* features (Compatibility with your PC's OS, wireless networking, built-in hard drive, and a wireless remote control).
I'm sure Microsoft must be making a bundle through this syncopated process, but not only does it cost an arm and a leg (unless you're blessed with serenditpity and friends who work off the back of trucks), but I'd feel like I'm in a straight jacket of requirements, and considering the outlay, that's extremely uncool. I'd be deathly afraid to even attempt to "mod" anything on the 360 and ruin my pricey set-up if it ends up needing fixing afterwards.
Meanwhile, it looks like Apple TV's OS X with SSH support is going to really open some potentially awesome backdoors for guilt-free modding. I don't even see ghosting the original drive for quick restoring to be anything of nightmare for anyone with intermediate computer skills. People are already running VLC and will probably have an external DVD player hooked up soon. I've got an external DVD sitting right next to me that wouldn't mind be partnered with an AppleTV. People are getting hard-ons with all the mod potential and its only been a couple of days.
Looks like a solid win for Apple. Considering the menus on AppleTV appear editable, it seems only a matter of time before someone starts throwing games in there. The first person to run Warcraft on Apple TV will get the largest simultaneous Internet high-five ever seen for this category of device... especially if it runs WELL. - LeBlue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1In the video, all he loaded up were small trailers and some songs (no more than 5MB), the videos were about (~80MB). What if you are going to stream a 1.3GB PROPER H.264 encode?
Exactly, it'd take some 15-20 minutes for it to load up at about halfway - cleverboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Aside from the last 30 seconds looking BRIEFLY at the settings and the first bit with the "boot-up" animation, this "walk-through" is worse that the one posted over a month ago by Mac Daily:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4itNWe27d38
Is it too much to ask to no look at music that has no cover art... for no particular reason? Meh.
I'll see it in the store this weekend anyways. - garfonzo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1thats a great idea
- eatsushi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I was about to say, it looks nice but I'm surprised that Apple missed that one. Oh well, that's why I never get 1st gen Apple products.
- hadimirza, on 03/26/2008, -3/+4sleepy head
- garfonzo, on 10/12/2007, -7/+8lol
- Velocity211, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2really nice, i don't think it's worth $300 though. And the startup is a little bit long, not very apple like with the startup video, maybe fixed in next revision or firmware?
- cleverboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Stick with XBMC then. Apple TV was just released. Talking smack about how the modded Media Center for XBox are better than the mods for Apple TV seems a little silly at this point, doesn't it?
With the ease of content availability through the iTunes music store, like it or not on the quality front, a lot of people will be more into this than any XBox-based solution. From my understanding, the hardware limitations alone have made XBox an aging mod-platform. Xbox's 733 MHz Intel Pentium III Celeron and 64MB shared memory vs. Apple TV's Pentium-M Crofton and 256MB DDR2 SDRAM, sounds like an easy competition to call.
I see the biggest issue in all this, being that Apple may see too much mod-lattitude as an invitation by hackers to upset its pod/computer DRM relationship paradigm. If the Apple TV, through hackery, is easily given the ability to make purchases on iTunes, it may give Apple some stickiness from a contract perspective. For a given account, unlimited iPods can hold and play unfettered copies of FairPlay protected media while "computers" on said account are limited to 5. They aren't allowed to download and purchase the media themselves. If hackers change this, there could be problems for Apple. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3yes digg me down cause you wet your pants at the drop of this BS product !! Jesus Apple marks this isn't second coming of the TV !!
Get over yourselves and this rotten Apple that is the same as using an IPOD with your PC and TV to inerface !!!!!!!!!
AND NO iTUNES HAS NO HD CONTENT ON IT OR HAS ANY PLANS TO ANYTIME SOON
SO PWNED !!!!!!!!!!! - CrimsonBlur, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Oh, and add to this that Microsoft already has TV and Movie downloads on Live and they will be adding IPTV in the near future... all that leaves you with is that the AppleTV can stream iTMS songs to your TV/stereo. You can stream music and video to the 360 already without Media Center also, by the way, so you don't actually need Media Center, it's just a nicer interface with more features.
- adc86, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Eh, once you read about how they're hacking this thing, it's cost:value ration kinda changes :)
- cleverboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As I noted elsewhere, Microsoft's Media Center gui is better, but it doesn't mean anything at all if getting it going is a supreme pain in the ass.
Currently I have Microsoft XP Pro on my desktop computer and nothing else. With an HD TV, tell me how much I would need to spend to get Media Center working so I can play movies and photos on my TV? My guess is that without scrambling on eBay, I'd be in it for well over $600 in upgrades and hardware, while an Apple TV would only cost me $299. Most of the "extra" features available through Media Center would simply keep costing me more and more without a huge advantage over simply using other solutions. On a Mac (which I'm switching to soon, I already have a G4 but I'm consolidating my computers now), I could get EyeTV, and have my tv shows automatically sync to my Apple TV effortlessly (and I'm sure a Windows based solution already exists if I looked). $175-$199. As far as the way I currently work, this type of solution slips in painlessly, while Windows Media Center has all the smoothness of an ice cold enema. Soup to nuts, with Apple, I'd prob. be up and running in 20-30 minutes. I'd be lucky if a new Media Center set-up would be up in working inside of 2-3 hours. - CrimsonBlur, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I like Apple products. I have 2 iPods and I have been saying for a while now that my next computer will be a Mac. After seeing this video though, I'm not so sure about Apple's ability to create a seamless media solution. My current computer, which is 5 years old or so, runs Vista flawlessly (I used the beta, back to XP now) and can decode 720p video just fine. The interface and features of AppleTV pale in comparison to Windows Media Center. It's really no contest, Media Center is leaps and bounds ahead of this. An XBOX 360 is $400 and Vista Home Premium is $199. For $300 (or $200 for a Core system) more than AppleTV you get a "next-gen" gaming console which is also a Media Center Extender, and Vista has Media Center built in. That is a far superior combination, and if you just hook your computer up to your TV you don't even have to buy the 360. Not to mention the fact that a good portion of the target market for this type of device may already own an XBOX 360, like me.
Of course Apple has the advantage of the iPod and the iTunes Music Store content, which you can only access with Apple software. That alone will force people to buy this instead of using Media Center, which is too bad, because it really is an inferior solution. Apple dropped the ball this time, and there is no way I would pay $300 for this thing. - Cimlite, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@kilofox
I use a wireless bridge to my Xbox... works perfectly, can stream anything including DVDs without problems. Videos also start pretty much instantly after you click them, unlike what is shown in this video.
About getting up to turn on/off Xbox, you don't have to do that either. There's several easy solutions you can buy (or build if you handy like that) that let's you do that, resulting in that you can turn on and off the box with the remote.
Sure you can't play all H.264 content on XBMC, but you can play some (depends on the content)... After seeing how the AppleTV preforms, I can't help but think that what I already got is overall better. - honemasterT, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This video is pretty lame.. I mean, silence, some dude breathing? WTF?
how about some commentary or something.
I'm toying around with mine now.. Qwest VDSL box was shot the other
day (freak spring thunderstorm here in the desert) so I hooked mine up
without net connectivity (other than the LAN)
Box is seriously crippled, unless it can 'talk' to the iTunes music
store and do whatever it needs to with your iTMS account.
Once my connection was back up yesterday, and I re-synced
it with iTunes, music streaming now works. Before it didnt.. I had
to 'sync' (i.e. copy) everything over to the small 40Gb drive.
I see that some folks have already 'hacked' it and swapped out
the drive. (niiiice!)
The way I see it.. you 'dont' want to sync your music to it..
better to stream. That leaves the rest of the space for
photos and moovies and such.
The TV Show feature appears pretty lame to me, unless
the content is free in iTMS I'm not paying for what I can
get from say nbc.com for free.
Streams .mp4's (handbrake) just fine.. trying a 2 pass
H.264 rip now.. but that takes like 3+ hours on a dual
2.7Ghz G% versus 45mins for a 2 pas .mp4 rip.
I like it.. but IMHO the internal drive should be
80-120Gb. Sheesh, an iPod can hold more, and
it's a PITA to have to pick/choose what to
sync. - cleverboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Here's MY though...
@monsterMagnet
You know... its funny. You were going fine there at the beginning, but anyone with a few brain cells can immediately see all the other issues you're glossing over. You realize the XBox Core system doesn't do wireless, right? Personally, I'm done with 25 ft. RJ45's. Done. You'll need the $99 Wireless Network Adapter. Oh, joy! Gasp. Doesn't that raise the price to $399? --Cause Apple TV does this out of the box.
Linux MCE - So, what you're saying is that I need to install Linux of Ubuntu or some ***** like that right? No, dude. I've no qualms with Linux, but when I eventually start playing with it, it will not be solely because it runs Linux MCE. What I'd need to reboot too, huh? Come on now.
Vista - Let me state a fact. Most Windows users are NOT running Windows Vista. So, we shouldn't pretend they are, or that there is a huge demand to do so. This doesn't match the facts. Even Ballmer has been quoted as noting that apathy levels provided for less than "sunny" adoption numbers. I'm running Windows XP Pro, and I'm perfectly happy to keep running it. Apple TV doesn't force me to upgrade my OS ($$$) or install a different one. So far, you're extremely unconvincing.
monsterMagnet QUOTE: "You can create your own Lan wireless to your Xbox360 to stream date to it."
As I can do with an Apple TV out of the box. Ok, so you ARE talking mostly about a wireless 360. Update your price then, please.
monsterMagnet QUOTE: "I guess we all know what the cost effective and best choice would be."
Still an Apple TV for me, dude. It's running Mac OS X, so instead of installing Linux on my Windows box and forcing myself to reboot when I'm using my TV, I'm more inclined to open up the firewall and run SSH on my Apple TV and start making configuration changes. I bet I could use my Apple TV as a development server too. Serve up some Apache. Hm...
monsterMagnet QUOTE: "At least you don't need a HDMI or DIV connection with the 360 in order to do what the Apple TV needs and requires you to have in order to hook it up !!"
I can tell your faulting the Apple TV for something its not doing, but I can't tell what it is.
QUOTE: "Nuff said."
Apparently not. Especially if you're leaving stuff out left and right. I've been considering picking up a MacMini, like a lot of people, but it sounds like I won't have to. There's a point at which solutions join, and a point at which solutions part. Will the Apple TV be able to do everything an XBox can? Well, its not an XBox compatible for sure. And media-wise, certainly not out of the box as far as its supported features. Will an XBox be able to do everything an Apple TV can? Nope. Especially when it comes to mods, but I can't imagine as it stands, I can have video podcasts automatically appear on an XBox 360 while I'm running Windows XP.
Without a HD, the Xbox isn't exactly going to be storing much content locally either so I imagine a lot of research tracking down a simple way to automatically have a show like Battlestar Galactica show up regularly without letting Microsoft hold more money than the show costs for a season. Here's another boner for an Xbox-based solution. Someone commented recently that content downloaded on one XBox, can't play on another XBox. --So if you download "The Prestige" on your XBox in the living room, you can't turn around and play it on your computer, and you can't take the hard drive to a friend's house and play it on their system. With Apple TV, I can buy the movie and stream or sync it to my Apple TV, or throw it on an iPod, authorize a friend's computer and play it at his house too, or god-forbid take the movie and watch it while waiting at the DMV. That's flexibility, buddy.
These two machines begin to go in two separate directions.
My ideal home entertainment set-up includes: Apple TV, Multi-function Device DVD/CD/VCR, Nintendo Wii, 60" HD flat-screen. It's possible an XBox 360 might join the group at some point, but I'm not interested in the Microsoft "ecosystem" concept that makes people bend over and jump through hoops, even when they're already saturated in Microsoft run computers (just not the RIGHT Microsoft run OS installed).
Until Microsoft wakes up and stops JERKING PEOPLE AROUND on the Media Center, solutions like Apple TV will be much much more easy to use.

In the next couple of weeks, I predict a menu will be added to Apple TV
that allows YouTube browsing. Just watch. I wouldn't be surprised if Apple even adds it.
They're planning on supporting YouTube on the iPhone as it is. - cleverboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@crimsonblur:
Meh. Don't say "forced", I'd prefer "persuade". "Forced" in my opinion, is how Microsoft FORCES you to let them hold your money in float, for purchases on XBox Live. Which for that reason alone, I will NEVER make a purchase through them.
Anyone can convert their songs and videos out of iTunes if they really wanted, its just inconvenient (read: time-consuming and cumbersome), which was the point intended by the rights holders. Meanwhile, burning and ripping is kindegarten simple, and Apple let's you use iTunes tracks when building home movies (through iMovie), which doesn't smack of "forcing" anyone to me, so let's keep it *real*.
I don't think I'm alone in saying that if I get a game system it will probably be a Wii, not an XBox 360 (sorry). I don't really care to get into the XBox at this point. For people like me, where's that leave us? Getting an Apple TV I imagine (don't even bother mentioning Orb, its stupid).
Out of the box, the Apple TV means I don't need to purchase an XBox Wireless Network Adapter. Did you forget about that (+$99)? Moreover, Apple TV is 802.11n, not 802.11g like the adapter gives you. --Also, it immediately works with iTunes, which I use to manage all my music on my computer (as many people do). You can criticise iTunes all you want, but its popular for a reason even if its not your cup of tea.
And, um... I don't WANT Vista, ok? I have Windows XP Pro, so it sounds unnecessarily stupid for me to upgrade to Vista for a few extra features on my XBox media browser... which I won't have anyway. I have a DVD player on my TV already too.
It's funny, when you step back and think about it. If Microsoft were to release a "Microsoft TV", that mirrored the Apple TV's hardware, and did all the stuff the XBox 360's meda browser did, did NOT play games, but made it compatible with all of its Windows operatings systems... it would be a no-brainer, wouldn't it? The interface is better than Apple TV, and it has clear provisions for DVR functions and wider file support. Done! But such a product doesn't exist, does it?
Moreover, legions are getting old XBox consoles and modding them to run XBMC just to get a media device on their own terms aren't they? XBMC would not EXIST if Microsoft Media Center wasn't such an ass pain. Apple Tv stuck to the basics for its launch, and it will *evolve*. Microsoft has had years to leap ahead of Apple on its interface, but still hasn't even made its solutions as simple to use or even understand.
Right now, I could drive over to an Apple store, buy an Apple TV, have it running on my system in minutes. Could I do that with Media Center? No... I can't. I can't even do that with XBox 360 without a lot of fiddling and research. Moveover? I bet I could start ripping DVDs and streaming them to my Apple TV from my Windows computer without much trouble.
I mean... just look at these simple solutions popping up:
http://www.dvd-ripper-copy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2435
While you may have really appreciated the potential of Windows Media Center, and gladly braved its mountain, I guessing it took you a good amount of research and sweat to really get it where you wanted it. Most people, in my opinion, simply aren't interested in that much effort.
Oh, yes... and I will hack this bitch too. But, I didn't even need to mention that. - mrcrystalball, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2The box looks cool, but it seems lacking. I am sure Apple will make more gadgets that will make this more useful, but for now I will just keep popping in the netflix & pecking at the laptop. Apple, not that I don't think you are great, I just know you can do better. I want more.
- Roger, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Sad, but I think true.
Microsoft may have outdone Apple in turns of GUI design this time. - alwaysmc2, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4I know! They have that showey video intro (that is pointless) and then... *blip* there's the interface.

"Can I connect AppleTV to my older TV using composite cables?"
Nope. Apple is still “skating to where the puck is going to be”. You need a newer TV that supports component video, DVI or HDMI
"Can I stream using 802.11b?"
Nope. You need 802.11g/n to stream.
"Is there a cable to connect to my TV? Is it not there."
Nope. Apple does not ship a cable with your AppleTV unit.
"Can I control the TV volume and or brightness with my Apple Remote?"
Nope .
"Can I use the AppleTV USB port?"
Nope. Apple says that AppleTV will not recognize USB keyboards, mice, hard drives, etc. The USB port is for “service and diagnostics only”.
6 Solid reason Apple TV is a Rotten Apple
1. It’s $300. Damn. And no free cables!
2. If you don’t use iTunes-DRMed media, it offers nothing new. There’s no reason to bother if you have something similar and your movies and such are not gotten via Apple.
3. It doesn’t do much. Even though it’s a capable computer in itself, it’s all in the service of functionality that’s designed in, instead of being emergent from its hardware capabilities. Yeah, that’s just the way it works with modern appliances, but if it has a Pentium M CPU, 256 MB RAM, a 40GB hard drive, why no PVR? Why such limited features?
4. This is really just 3b: With all that grunt, it’s basically a Mac Mini Mini with lots of outputs and special software. Why can’t I just slap OS X or Windows or Linux on it and use it as a kids’ computer, the heart of a MAME cabinet, a Car PC, or something a little more fully-featured? Let me in. (We may get in real easy, of course, but that’s for the hackers to discover.)
5. Won’t work with other DRM systems. Goes without saying, but say it I must. It’s our fault for using DRM, of course. Then again, DRM is the top reason for having to buy this expensive baby.
6. does not record but does allow for streaming and playing videos you buy. This is not much different then Akimbo or MovieBeam – they both have settop boxes to watch pre bundled videos that they sell ala-cart. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1ahmadazwa
