- twertyto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+38I think the word irony is the most incorrectly used word in the English language. Am I wrong?
- lcarsdeveloper, on 10/12/2007, -4/+39Sorry, I forgot completely that it was on a year ago. I should have remembered, even though I had never even heard of Digg this time last year.
My deepest, humblest, most sincere apologies to you and anyone who I have emotionally scarred by digging this tragically duplicate article.
Won't somebody please think of the database! All those duplicate stories must be seriously hurting Digg's MySQL servers!
I say we put together a gift basket and send it to Kevin to apologise for filling up his database with duplicate stories. I'm sure he's sitting in his office in tears because of the strain we're putting his server under. He just can't afford it anymore.
Sorry Kevin, and sorry greymaxcat. - theone3, on 10/12/2007, -3/+35http://duggmirror.com/apple/Video_A_very_young_Bill_Gates_Praising_the_Apple_Macintosh/Gates-Praising-the-Macintosh.mov
Microsoft used to make software for the mac exclusively. I don't see why this is awkward. HE was definately (and still is) awkward. - theone3, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20VLC FTW ;)
- chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -6/+23if you watch it he does say "machine". Microsoft don't make computers so I don't see how there is a conflict of intrest here. If he was saying the OS is better than Windows then maybe you can get a hard-on over it but it's not the case.
@theone3: And what do you mean "used to make software for the mac"? - LordFate, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18Now that Mac x86s can run Windows I bet he's liking them more and more. They are software competitors, not hardware.
- friend18, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Heres a youtube link to the video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FifG1X0d5fA - macbookpromat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Uh I think it's been said that Bill Gates is Mac's #1 fan!
- shakestheclown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12There always seems to be selective amnesia regarding the money Microsoft gave to Apple when they were hurting, to keep the competition & increase penetration of IE.
Everyone acts like Microsoft would be happier without Apple, but that is not the case. They just don't want them to capture any more of the market. - b3mus3d, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12There is actually an advert outside my local newsagents that says "THAT'S IRONIC!!!" at the top.
It's for an ironing service.
I still can't decide if they're being extra-clever and it's gone over my hehad or if they're just stupid. I'm leaning towards the second of those options... - IHateScreenName, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12@chris9902:
You missed the word "exclusively" in your quote. That changes the meaning a bit, don't you think? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13How is that ironic?
- alawson75, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9What video is that from? I want to see the whole thing.
- theone3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9The Zune isn't released yet, and it's manufactured by Toshiba. Microsoft just do the software, ads and support.
- trealtney, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Here's a photo-spread of Bill from 1983 in teen beat (it's not my blog). Check out the Mac in the background
http://blog.monkeymethods.org/2005/01/bill-gates-strikes-pose-for-teen-beat.html
Scary that he ever thought of himself as a teen idol. - martalli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The dichotomy between the old IBM PC or AT in the background and that Apple Mac is tremendous. If you used an old IBM with a green/back monitor, you would know it was a decade behind the Mac in usability. DOS essentially was an underpowered but universal version of CPM. The Mac, even back then, had basically the same interface you are probably using right now (Win, Mac, or Linux) - but with a much smaller screen!
- Crid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6> Bill made mad cash
> selling mac office..
Exactly. Apple fanatics often seem so eager for this to be a personal thing that they ignore the chess board. The relative (relative!) success of Apple has been one of the best things that ever happened to Microsoft. Not only did Redmond make a wicked amount of money from Apple products, not only has Gates been able to use Cupertino as a licensed development lab, but he's always been able to point to Apple when the SEC comes around and makes antitrust noises.
> His arrogance is
> overwhelming.
So Jobs a wallflower? That's not what I heard....
If things were to have worked out better for Gates, how would computer history be different? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Curse you Alanis Morisette!
- Crid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Not just VLC. *portable* VLC!
- theuber1337, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9Why is it all the people speaking sense get dugg down? Jesus, the apple section of Digg is like Fox News.
This was back when Microsoft wrote much of the apple software, what you are doing is spreading ignorance by taking it out of context. Microsoft profits off of Apple, it did then, and it did now. Ever notice Microsoft doesn't seem to be running attack ads against apple? They profit from their existence.. and they'll never be a threat regardless. - StatusQuoRules, on 10/12/2007, -7/+10"Microsoft would be happier without Apple"
Yeah, then how would MS get their ideas? - samste, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5dead. will duggmirror help
http://duggmirror.com - kibmcz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I have that video on "The 1997 Apple MacAdvocate CD-Rom" It says "Runs on Macs and Windows PC's (no, thats not a misprint)." I didnt think much of that line until i head Bill Gates on that video.
Wasn't that when of Microsoft saved Apple from going under by buying $US150 million of non-voting stock? - theone3, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5The only hardware that Microsoft makes that competes with Apple's hardware is their keyboards and mice. And they do compete fiercly in that market. All their software products are competitors. I think Bill must be loving the x86 thing though, because Mac users who want windows have to pay the full sticker price for it. That's about 100% more profit per sale. I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft bought parralels and started bundling it at that markup!
- matthewecornish, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Good grief... dig around, learn a little history before posting stuff like this and treating it in the context of today...
- Rkstar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3trealtney: I'm wondering which is wrong. That Teen Beat blog says the photo was taken in 1983... before the Mac came out. There's no way Apple would have let microsoft have an early copy of the mac, let alone pose with it. If it was '83, maybe that wasn't a mac in the background.
- theone3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Bullhonkey! ffdshow and VLC will play anything, without screwing up your system with 1400 codecs.
- comedianX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Gates was also at least close to his thirites when he said this; so he wasn't "very young." He just LOOKS like he is sixteen.
- antdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2And so nerdy/geeky!
- anphanax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Trealtney, those pictures were not from "teen beat". They were described as "teen beat"ish by someone, and communications broke down somewhere (possibly on purpose :P).
- aristotle0dude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2JPDota, I bet you cannot wait to try to squirt some pictures you perv.
- Jozer99, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4How is this surprising? For one thing, a major part of Microsoft's business was and is Mac software. It used to be things like qBasic interpreters, and now is things like Office, and until recently, Virtual PC. Bill Gates bailed out Apple back in the 1990s when they were in deep trouble and in danger of going under, and committed to developing Internet Explorer for the Mac, which was the default browser on Apple computers for 4 or 5 years.
Its not PC people who hate Mac addicts, its the Mac people who feel threatened and superior to all the PC using masses, and project their own animosity on to everyone else. - DeezKnots, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm sure Adobe/Macromedia is a larger developer for the Mac than Microsoft and this video was shot before windows released. Microsoft was just a major software vendor at the time. This was a video focusing on Big Blue... IBM. A game show mock-up from a documentary called Triumph of the Nerds.
- datapimp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2this is really old!!!
- Codename, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1owned
- Farkle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Since I have one of the few copies of the Premiere edition of MACWORLD (as it was called then) that hasen't been burned by the fascists (oops! I meant 'historically corrected by the fanboys'), I think it worth mentioning the article praising Gates and Microsoft for their help with the Mac development. It was really quite kissey-kissey on both sides.
- spangemonkee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I don't know why everyone thinks Bill Gates hates Apple.
A) He owns stock in Apple
B) Microsoft is the LARGEST developer for the Mac
C) Heavy competition makes bettter sales on BOTH sides
D) His wallet is waaaaaay fatter than Steve Jobs' - danr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Even with the keyboard and mouse peripherals, i wouldn't say they are competing directly with Apple. If anything the fact most Macs come with 1 button mice just creates a market of people who want to buy a new 2 or 3 button optical mouse for their new computer.
- Crid, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Yeah. Appleheads think they've caught Bill Gates saying something that WASN'T for his own benefit.
Can you imagine that happening? - yahoofrom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1He looks so geek.
- astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looks like Harry Potter v1.0
- iJump, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1More vids here:

Just thought I toss this out to the curious. - DelMonte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"A) He owns stock in Apple"
Prove that...
Microsoft, the company, doesn't own a single share of Apple.
They sold their 150 millions worth of non-voting stock a long time ago. - DelMonte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"It used to be things like qBasic interpreters"
Yeah and Microsoft forced Apple to cancel its superior GUI driven MacBasic, threatening not to release software for the Mac, and we got the crappy text-based MS Basic on the Mac instead.
"Its not PC people who hate Mac addicts, its the Mac people who feel threatened and superior to all the PC using masses, and project their own animosity on to everyone else."
LOL... Yeah right, get real dude, some Mac users may be on the defensive, but the reality is that there's a lot more animosity towards Mac users than the opposite.
I guess you're too young to remember the pre-iPod days, when kids were getting physically threatened at school just for being Mac fans. The opposite never happened.
If 90% of the world uses Windows, why would we (Mac users) hate people that use it? That would include some of our friends and family... On the other hand, I've seen countless personal attacks toward Mac users just because they are Mac users, because they are part of this "weird" minority.
Some Mac users may get angry when some uninformed Windows users repeat the same drivel and myths regarding the Mac. The worst Mac fanboys are usually inspired by the Apple haters in the first place. Also, digg and web forums are not the real world. Many Mac fans use them as a way to vent their frustration about hate they receive in the real world.
Let me guess, you also think that racism and homophobia exist because gays and black people complain about discrimination. Same mindset...
Oppression/discrimination always starts towards minorities, that's how it works in many similar situations. Minorities may not always react in the right way, but that's the excuse the discriminators found in the majority always use to continue their oppression, trying to make us forget that they started the thing. - Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Actually, it is just informed people who get annoyed by all the stupid comments
"Bill Gates bailed out Apple... " Apple had over 1 billion USD in the bank that day. Do you really think 150Mil. made the difference? MS paid to get out under some long-standing patent issues and for some technology sharing.
"committed to developing Internet Explorer for the Mac..." Actually, as part of the deal, Apple committed to making IE the default browser on the Mac, and MS committed to continue development of MS Office for the Mac for 5 years.
"Its not PC people who hate Mac addicts, its the Mac people who feel threatened and superior to all the PC using masses,"
Yeah, right. That is why there are over 75 people on my block list who claim that Apples suck, are for fags, are too expensive, etc etc. - nandabanaotakun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1VLC doesn't support applescript.
Applescript fills in the gaps, too:
tell application "QuickTime Player"
present front movie scale screen
end tell - aristotle0dude, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Yeah it was also the same time that Apple had 4 billion dollars still in the bank. The investment was a symbolic gesture, nothing more. It had a great deal of psychological effect on restoring confidence in the stock. That investment was part of an out of court settlement concerning stolen quicktime code within Media player.
Ultimately though, the 5 year commitment to produce software for the mac platform is what helped Apple out as it restored the confidence of third-party developers such as Adobe in the mac platform.
I'm really getting tired of MSFT fanboys bringing up the 150 million dollars without understanding the proper context. It was peanuts compared to the commitment to produce software for 5 years. That commitment has been renewed several times over the years. - BlackRyn0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Look at the eyes at the end of the statment evil pure evil.
