- Ninjamonkey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14people make a huge deal about this but MS didn't save Apple. Apple still had a lot of money in the bank. This 'partnership' was good for both companies. This money was basically a settlement for the case Apple had against MS. In return it looked good for MS since they were going through anti trust proceedings.
What saved Apple was the iMac and to a lesser extent the iBook not this relatively tiny investment by MS. - theone3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Y'know, people have always had this Apple vs Microsoft war in their head. But Gates, Woz and Steve were all in the same situation of being geeky computer obsessed students in the 70s and 80s. Surely, there must be a sense of comradery between them?
- trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12The most cheering was after the announcement that they were "non voting shares" priceless.
- DeckardRep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Just wanted to mention that this in no way was the toughest pill for Steve Jobs to swallow. I know little of Jobs' life, but getting forced out of Apple had to have been far worse than this.

its somewhere around 20 something minutes - nutjob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I think you'll all find that at the time Apple had over 4 billion in the bank. This 500 million dollar deal had nothing to do with Microsoft bailing Apple out, and marked to the conclusion of Apple suing Microsoft over theft of IP from QuickTime and the look-and-feel court cases.
To this day, this would have to be the most misunderstood deal of all time. I still run into people on a regular basis today who question Apple's relevance in the market place since "didn't Microsoft like buy them in 1997". - maxmiles, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9one correction... Apple wasn't going bankrupt. Revenue was dropping, yes, but they were still a long way away from banruptcy.
- briangig, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Funny. watch this, then watch a recent keynote with Jobs talking about Vista.
+digg for a big moment in computing history. - inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8> Apple stole the gui from Xerox and Microsoft got it from Apple
The Internet is such a great stage for exhibiting one's ignorance.
Apple paid for the tech from Xerox. Apple asked Xerox's permission to use their ideas and develop them further. They hired some of the people who developed it at Xerox. They added a lot of their own ideas too.
MS came along and took it all without asking or paying a penny to anyone.
You're entitled to your own opinions, but not your own facts. Get the latter straight. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7It is so hard for him to talk. He sounds like he is gonna cry.
- nights0223, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Yeah, everyone who hasn't seen it should go watch Pirates of Silicon Valley. Great movie.
- skyhighrockets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Oh man, just watch the video, Steve Jobs looks like hes just shot himself in the foot. When people started booing like crazy at him, all I could think of was 'OUCH, that has got to hurt for Steve'. Its really crazy, especially when he announces that IE will be default....
- vyoming, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Ya, just saw this video this morning.
This also tells us what steve has achieved in these 9 years at apple.
In 1997 apple needed $0.15 billion so badly that it had to turn to M$,
now in 2006, apple is worth a little more than $70 billion, it gets the $150m from a couple
of weeks of itunes sales. - flyindutchman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I believe the big deal wasn't so much the money, but the addition of MS Office. Truth is, without MS Office, Mac probably does not exist. Like it or not, and I personally don't, Word and Excel are the standard.
- elpayo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Completely innacurate description and misleading title. Apple was never 'near bankruptcy' as previous commenters have noted. They had a huge cash reserve.
- superdigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3hahahaha that was hilarious! it somehow reminded me of some sci-fi movie where the king of the planet would announce that they would be giving up to the evil universal emperor. that moment when gates came up on screen was priceless!
- FishyJoe, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7They weren't even close to bankruptcy. They were sittting on $5 billion in cash.
- acidronin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah it seems like they lost that to Dell. It's like every other school or office has one.
- jakbrud, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Look at the look on Job's face when he announces that IE will be the default browser.
- 4815162342, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2lol the one guy at 33:46 with his head in his hand
- FishyJoe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Wihtout Apple, the feds would have broken up Microsoft eventually for being a monopoly.
- Noize, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3i love it when they say internet explorer is the default browser and they all go NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
- Pureeviljester, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It was half claps half boos. It's not like it was 100% boos. You guys don't know what being boo'd off stage means...
- TheReport, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2He might have changed the world but one think he rarly changes is his outfits during his kenote speeches. I think that was the first time in awhile I didnt see him in that black turtleneck
- inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Say what you will about Steve Jobs and this whole MS thing, but with it, Jobs managed to pull Apple up out of the horrific nosedive Gil Amelio and his predecessors had thrown the company into. I had bought a Performa 6200 in 1996 and it and the monitor were the single worst computer I have ever used in my life. I had used Macs previously in college and they had all been great, but this thing was a pile of trash. The monitor had to be replaced 6 times. I remember seeing Windows at work and at friends' houses and thinking that it was going to be damn hard not to switch to Windows next time I was in the market for a computer.
So, it's sort of amusing when people point to things like this MS deal as if Jobs should be ashamed (and many do.) He didn't have to come back to clean up Amelio's mess. He could have worked toward selling off what was left, making a few bucks and moving on to something else. To me, that was a great moment. Jobs came back, realized that Apple had been putting out ***** and had ruined any reputation they had at that point and found a way to dig the company out. He basically threw up his hands and started all over. And he's supposed to be ashamed of this? - Chasin_Fat_Kids, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What happened to their education market? Is it just me or have they let this slip?
- lennon2600, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Why don't people remember that 1997 is when Jobs returned to Apple to commandeer the ship once again? The company was going bankrupt because of it's horrible leadership and management during most of the early to mid 90s. Sure, Apple had to partner with Microsoft since Jobs was booted out of Apple, Microsoft had jumped into the #1 personal computing software spot, and had the market for office tools. Which were...in those days, the essentials.
- overkill_usa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3No, I disagree that MS users will perpetuate the false statement that MS saved Apple into other forums. In fact, many are reading digg now and learning so that all involved are breaking down prejudices and mental barriers. Digg does not "suck" as you say - in fact, you seeem to be missing the main point: Digg is perpertuating free thought and discussions - that's a plus for any arguments. I suppose if you are a Stalinist then perhaps Digg sucks because that would promote free and open discussions. Go to another forum if you just want to complain.
- tadunne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'll play Devil Advocate.. While the Share investment didn't save the company, the commitment to produce Office for the Mac for another 5 years must have really helped restore some confidence in the system?
- tdaddy11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I like the end when that bald Apple fan boy is shaking his head like "Aw, hell no. I can't believe what just happened." As if his world was coming to an end. Sad.
- Shinnokxz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3LMFAO @ Apple geeks nodding their heads in the audience.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"(Microsoft pulling Apple out of bankruptcy)"
Wow, now that is inaccurate. - estvir, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2anthonyyeung, steve jobs/bill gates were saw xerox parc at the same time, so no, apple wasn't first copying them.
- firebeastm, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1Cool! This video can be downloaded to your computer:
http://www.freeyoutubegrabber.com/ - Harlequn, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6and I never really understood all the booing of Bill Gates.
Gates has been one of the biggest boosters of windowed computing environments. He was there for the Mac introduction and he slogged thru all those years of trying to get the PC world over to a graphical interface while people kicked and screamed and had their hands GLUED to their Wordstar/Wordperfect keyboards, deathly afraid of touching the mouse. - TheReport, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2That guy looked like someone just killed his mom
- savmac, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I think Steve is one of the worlds greatest speakers, what a great video and history lesson that's not even ten years old.
- bpapa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Great quote from the keynote that is part of what makes Apple so great - "For Apple to win, Microsoft doesn't have to lose. If Apple does good, Apple wins."
I love companies like Apple and Nintendo that don't waste their time playing "can you top this" with the competition. Do your own thing, and at the end of the day if all the business-side stuff worked out (ie Nintendo sitting on billions in the bank) then you've won. - neocitron, on 10/12/2007, -7/+8and if it weren't for Apple there wouldn't be a Microsoft... Gates developed software for Apple before he even started Microsoft.
i'll say it again... MS and Apple are not direct competitors... you should look at MS and Sony or MS and Google rather than MS and Apple - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4"Those people booing are stupid, if it werent for Microsoft there wouldnt be an Apple anymore."
Okay, this is ridiculous. Microsoft didn't "save" Apple from bankruptcy. Steve Jobs let Microsoft purchase non-voting stock in Apple in exchange for making Office for the Mac for a set number of years. Apple and Microsoft also settled their GUI disputes with an undisclosed settlement. Microsoft later sold the stock, before Apple unveiled the iPod (whoops).
As for people posting Xerox SPARC, you know a bunch of the SPARC people went to work at Apple and on the Macintosh, right?
"I love how all the annoying Mac geeks boo as Jobs announces that Microsoft is saving their asses."
Sigh. And this is why I hate ignorance. It makes people look like fools without them even realizing it. Microsoft wasn't "saving their asses" at all.
I hate Apple-hater misinformation. It's so ridiculous. - ScrabbyDoo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I was a Mac user then, and I knew if things didn't change Apple was going to oblivion at that time ...
But microsoft certainly didn't pull them out of it, what, with a measly 150m? Apple already had money, what it needed was leadership. Which presented itself in the form of Steve Jobs. The bondi blue iMac and siblings, OSX, iPod, iBook and ITMS totally transformed Apple. One product, you may say lucky. But a series of good products can only be attributed to leadership and vision.
The only thing that Microsoft did that helped was developing Mac Office, for which they were handsomely rewarded by consumers making the MS Mac Business Unit a highly profitable division. - mntpng, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Contrary to popular belief, Apple was never in danger of going bankrupt. They've had several billion of dollars in the bank during the time of financial crises which wasn't much of the crises when sitting on that much cash.
- cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -1/+2Haha, saw this too.
Just finished watching it, and I think it was a very interesting, if not historical video.
What I want to query though is, did Microsoft and Apple really have 100% of the desktop market? I know Linux was no where near what it is today, but didn't it have *some* share? Plus the various other operating systems? I guess he was just "rounding up", but I'd of thought no less if he'd said 95% instead.
Great video, dugg! - TheDarkTipper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The same is shown in Pirates of Silicon Valley.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Jobs had a big falling out with Gates in the early 90's when he said in an interview with Bob Cringely that Microsoft had no taste. Ever since then even though they speak professionally and maintain surface pleasantries certain understandable bitterness remains. Apparently Gates didn't visit Jobs in hospital when he was ill with his cancer scare either.
- fourfive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I like the BOOOS, nice video.
+DIGG - avonej, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Are you kidding? The default web browser in any mainstream operating system is extremely important. How do you think Internet Explorer had so much market share before Firefox came along? Did you simply not live through the 90's? Everyone used Netscape... and then Microsoft took advantage of its OS monopoly to bundle IE and the end users didn't question it: most people just use what's installed by default anyway. So now we have Microsoft getting IE to be the default browser for Windows and Mac OS around the same time... and you think this is a coincidence?
It's extremely important news, and there is a reason those people were booing. - dstarin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1nice.
- Dabellah, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2As mentioned, Apple's move wasn't a complete deviation to prevent going bankrupt... It was more or less to do what Steve has said in the past in this video as that is exactly what Apple has continued to do today - to create different products for the different people who want something other htan Windows. There cannot only be one OS just cuz people wouldn't have it. There will always be a crowd that wants something different than the norm. Jobs simply states that Apple is for those people and that this merger is more or less a way to painlessly allow people to transfer between their choices.
- ronaldpoi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Indeed... good movie, it explains a lot, and that "Steve" looks like the real one...
