- hipnerd, on 10/12/2007, -3/+28Arstechnica is a pretty decent site, actually. I don't consider links to the site "blogspam." And perhaps Halfcockedjack is an owner or admin for the site? So what? Lots of sites directly submit their own content. I doubt his massive two-friend network is a conspiracy violating the integrity of the voting process. They might just be other writers for the site or personal friends.
I really don't get where the hostility is coming from. - halfcockedjack, on 10/12/2007, -3/+27I've submitted 60 Ars stories over the last 300 days, or about 1 story every 5 days. 60 out of what looks like more than 2,000 stories in that time period.
I fail to see how this is spam. Ars writes stories, sometimes I submit. Sure some Ars stories link to other sites, but how is that different from Gizmodo or Engadget, which are linked here each and every day? It's not. Digg if you like, Bury if you don't. That's always worked for me. - diggfinity, on 10/12/2007, -30/+461) 1,986 of 1,988 articles the submitter dugg since joining in June 4, 2006 have been links to... arstechnica.
2) 60 of 61 submissions have been to... arstechnica.
3) Has 2 Digg friends. Both have only submitted links to... arstechnica.
4) 1 of 2 friends Diggs all of his submissions without fail, which are all to... arstechnica.
Now, if you don't see the fact that this Digg user is part of a marketing group for arstechnica, you must be blind. - neosublime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Either way, VWmare Fusion beta 3 is a big improvement, and much faster.
- EGOvoruhk, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18diggfinity: Who gives a ***** where it's from? As long as it's a valid story that people care about, which this is
- Cl1mh4224rd, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16> "1) 1,986 of 1,988 articles the submitter dugg since joining in June 4, 2006 have been links to... arstechnica."
1,988 - 1,986 = 2
You're saying he's only dugg 2 non-Ars articles prior to this submission, yet I count 4 non-Ars articles dugg on the first two pages in his profile, prior to this submission. Two pages in...on only one claim... and you're already lying. How much further do you want me to dig? - Konstantino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13I actually already got the e-mail and download link for beta 3 yesterday. Or am I mistaken?
- Wosat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Oh I get it... if he submits it, it's spam; if someone else had submitted it, it's not. It's so clear now...
- inkhead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Nice, it seems to work with Vista partition so far, but a little weird. However the best feature is > Preferences > Enable Debugger (Turn it off) and VMware Fusion screams!
- ddfall, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Semi-shameless plug:
http://www.digg.com/apple/VMware_Fusion_Beta_3_Now_Available_Now_with_Boot_Camp_Support
It links directly the updates page with a link on how to get a free serial number.
@diggfinity: Nice catch. Thanks for the numbers. - ddfall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5What???
- ddfall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I got mine this morning. That's the only way I heard about it.
- linuxeventually, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Does anyone know when VMware's IPO is supposed to go public? EMC said "this summer" http://www.vmware.com/company/news/releases/vienna.html
- stalefries, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm guessing this summer.
- leobaby, on 10/12/2007, -12/+15oooh a conspiracy between two people. I'm astonished. Floored I tell you! It's sooooo bad that a single digger could bury his stories and this conspiracy would go away. Oh my ***** god call the police.
I've like ars for some time. I for one have no problem with this. - chrisrcary, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This would be great if I don't want to reboot into my Boot Camp partition, but do the VMWare tools not interfere with my Apple drivers/performance of my Windows set-up when I do actually boot into it?
- Comatose51, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3http://www.vmware.com/company/news/releases/030507ace2.html
- threemagic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yes, the ability to shut off debugging is great...
- Zer0Fade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Can someone please explain to me what the benefits are of running parallels/ vmware off a boot camp? Say for expample if I run Vista in Boot Camp would running it through parallels give my the same eye candy? Sorry if the question is stupid but i've been a long time windows sys admin and am just 2 months into my macbook.
- iTorrey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Indeed. Parallels uses 40% cpu when IDLE in Fedora Core 6 (command line only, no gui!). VMWare Fusion B3 uses 0.4 cpu when idle in RHEL. Time will tell, but Fusion looks promising on this front.
- Callaway7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I imagine for those that have already set it up, using the Boot Camp is advantage rather than having to setup a new VM. However, that's also a downside in my opinion because w/ a VM you can easily back it up or copy to an external drive or another MAC for use. Depends on your needs I guess.
- betasp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I tried it and my trackpad never became active.
- nx01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I love VMWare's products, but for the love of god can they make one that allows you to boot from a USB drive?
- BlackAle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Beta 3 is already available, I had an email off VMware this morning about it.
...duh, just realised, it is Friday! - scotty588, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I use Parallels right now to boot off my boot camp partition in osx, but if I use vmware to do this as well will it conflict with Parallels?
- ddfall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It does indeed boot from the Vista partition. I've tinkered with it for a few minutes. Time will tell how well it's implemented. So far... So good...
- betasp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Did you uninstall parallels tools?"
Nope. Second time in and it works fine now. I did turn debugging off. - Swift2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Did anybody else have their VMtools update fail? I tried twice to update the video drivers, but it wouldn't do it automatically or manually, using the instructions they send. It's a pain. I've had it fail twice, locking up Windows on reboot -- no video driver. Argh.
I do like it a lot, and one reason is that I had taken a snapshot of the VM, so each time it failed and bluescreened on me, I just went right back before the new install. Yippee. - DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Did you uninstall parallels tools?
- betasp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I am posting this within VMware on a boot camp partition. There is definetely less CPU usage than Parallels. There is a weird flickering on the menus when I clock them, which is most likely from the 3D. Inet access seems slower but I need to test it.
- thebrokenlight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does anybody know if this beta will boot from a Vista partition? Or will it only work with an XP partition?
- zeppo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The best advantage to running VMware or Parallels directly off their partition is NTFS access. Secondary I guess would be saving some space on your Mac HFS partition.
- DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just tried it. I like it but there is no support for switching virtual desktops in VirtueDesktop via key combinations. That's a deal breaker for me as I switch back and forth between OS X and Parallels all the time.
- threemagic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good thing you're already awake then..
- threemagic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes, it boots with my Vista partition on my Macbook (I didn't use it for anything so if it killed it, I didn't care). However, sound drivers do not work and I can't see my Vista partition as a valid boot partition anymore so now it's for VMware use only.
- trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No, but it means that you can have one install which you can either conveniently run quickly in a VM without interruption your work, or reboot into as the main OS where you can use Beryl / Aero.
- inkhead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The first time you load your bootcamp partition, the trackpad is off in Fusion, after that it works fine. Nice to be able to load the NTFS volume, drag files over, and such.
- threemagic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's not really a matter of preference but more a matter of need. I have a mac pro and when I did my taxes in Turbo Tax or if I wanted some websites to put up correctly using IE I just used Parallel's (VMware didn't have debugging off until now) but when I wanted to play a game I booted directly into Windows.
The speed of loading inside of OS X is very nice but the 3d needs require a full reboot. - amoona, on 06/11/2008, -0/+1Nice, it seems to work with Vista partition
http://www.dreaminguy.com - mikesolis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1running Boot camp will give you generally a quicker experience as opposed to a virtualization program like VMware or Parallels. I'm pretty sure all of the virtualization programs don't support heavy graphics (such as games, or aero in vista) in Windows, like trogdoor said. But, with virtualization there is no need for a reboot to run Windows or vice versa. Its a matter of preference. Some people do both.
- MephistoX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1there is, you press apple + ctrl to switch back to your desktop
- DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It'll be interesting to see where this goes. I was a big supporter of Parallels but lately there have been no new releases and poor support. It's like most of the team left and they just aren't telling us. I was expecting a release with experimental 3D support but I'm not sure that is going to happen.
- mikesolis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the vmware fusion 3 beta website that ars technica links to looks really messed in Firefox for some reason.
- DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1That's not what I want though. I would have to press apple+ctrl and then shift+ctrl+down to change to the bottom desktop which is a bit too cumbersome. In Parallels, you don't need to first shift out of the window to pass info to virtue desktops.
- Wosat, on 10/12/2007, -17/+12You must not know what the word spam means or how digg works. Ars is one of the best technology sites around. The post is substantive, the topic is correct, the description is not deceptive, and the ads in the story are unobtrusive. I don't see what your problem is. How does the submitter's list have anything to do with whether or not something is spam anyway?
- diggfinity, on 10/12/2007, -23/+16More arstechnica spam... look at the submitter's list...
- cfpresley, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1Wake me up when it's released for XP or Linux
- Ipp07, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1So whens the mac build come!

What is Digg?
