- JTMON, on 07/14/2009, -0/+32Totally false. The devs have already got around this issue. There's a patch in Cydia or you can follow the manual instructions at modmyi.com
- megamod, on 07/14/2009, -2/+33I unlocked my phone with ultrasn0w and have had no issues with push...
- nitzan, on 07/15/2009, -0/+17The title is also slightly misleading. Unlocking the iPhone does not cause push to fail. Using the unlocked iPhone on another network does. So if you unlock your iPhone only to use it occasionally on trips abroad and avoid the ridiculous AT&T international charges, you will run into no problems (while in the USA with AT&T.)
- SpookyET, on 07/15/2009, -1/+16Morons who can't read or won't read have spread FUD. I've seen this crap on a couple of tech blogs.
Unlocking has nothing to do with push notifications.
Activation has everything to do with push notifications.
For those that have used an AT&T sim to activate (even a deactivated), push notifications work.
Those that use the hacktivation method to activate their phone have broken push notifications.
There is a work around, but it's quite crappy. It requires a friend with an AT&T sim who did proper activation. - superkendall, on 07/15/2009, -0/+14Also don't forget that Unlocked is totally different than Jailbroken...
- Timmyftw, on 07/15/2009, -3/+17*pins ribbon on rnawky's shirt*
It says world greatest winner.
oh btw: Nobody gives a ***** that you don't have an iPhone. - inkswamp, on 07/15/2009, -2/+15So, what unlocked piece of ***** *do* you have?
- inactive, on 07/14/2009, -4/+12That stinks- I hope someone can come to the unlockers' assistance soon!
- TheMadCow, on 07/15/2009, -0/+8I don't suppose any of you tools bothered to actually apply any journalistic research, like maybe digging around on the DevTeam website? No? You rather just pull FOX type news reporting instead of actually stating that the Dev Team is aware of the problem and they're working on the fix.
There. The whole article buried for being INACCURATE and LAMEASS. - Ragarnok, on 07/15/2009, -1/+8So jailbroken phones wins again? Apple sure is making it easy for them.
- adriaaan, on 07/15/2009, -0/+6To clarify (since the article writer doesn't seem to know exactly what he's talking about) the problem isn't with unlocked devices, but rather with so called "hacktivated" devices. Devices which have been activated without an officially supported SIM card. To get around the problem you can activate the phone normally, jailbreak, unlock and then stick a new SIM card in. That will get you around the problem.
There's also a fix available from the Cydia source http://cydia.iphoneil.com/ search for PushFix. - meghalc, on 07/15/2009, -1/+7Who the hell diggs these articles? There is a FIX already called "PUSHFIX" its on cydia.
source: http://cydia.iphoneil.com
Search: PUSHFIX - frumpsnake, on 07/15/2009, -2/+8I know it's (apparently) hard for US citizens to recognise that there's an entire (AT&T-free) planet out there, but can people PLEASE stop using the word 'unlocked' to refer specifically to hacktivated phones?
I bought my iPhone 3GS (unlocked and without a plan) directly from the Apple Store here in Sydney. And my carrier unlocked my old 3G for free on request. Both of which, as you'd expect being official and all, have no problems with push. - yifanlu94, on 07/14/2009, -5/+10As an unlocked iPhone user, I don't feel mad at Apple at all. I think part of the reason is that the request has to be sent to AT&T's service first before it can be pushed to you, so by unlocking to another carrier, that carrier doesn't support it (kind of like visual voicemail). I unlocked it to get past the huge monthly fees from AT&T, but I guess the people paying for them has the right to have more features.

Yeah, and how do expect us to get the full potential out of our iDevices when Apple tries to keep everything in their control?
Push wasn't working on my iPhone 2G but since a fix was released, I've never had a problem. Who ever wrote this up obviously didn't do their research. I wouldn't be surprised if he/she who wrote this up is somehow associated with Apple and is trying to promote anti-jailbreaking/unlocking/hacktivating (whatever) by scaring us when this has been fixed for a couple of weeks now. - meghalc, on 07/15/2009, -1/+5Probably all the IPHONE users on ATT who are getting ripped off by the monthly charges.
- firsttube, on 07/15/2009, -0/+3Agreed. Apparently the DevTeam has been aware of and working on a solution to this issue before it was even brought to many people's attention.
- Doktag, on 07/15/2009, -0/+3Bjornski, you're not really helping the situation. Jailbroken, hacktivated and unlocked are ALL different.
Jailbroken - iPhone has been modified to allow the installation of unapproved third-party applications.
Unlocked - iPhone can be used with any carrier. It is not locked down to just one. To prevent confusion, this term should only be used when discussing officially unlocked iPhones.
Hacktivated - An iPhone that has been unlocked (see above) via an unofficial hack. - inactive, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2Wait, you're carrier unlocked your old (previously locked) 3g phone? What method did they use (softare from apple or one of the softare unlocks like Ultrasn0w)?
- frumpsnake, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2The telco sends an unlock request to Apple somehow, within a few days you get the "updated carrier settings are available" on iTunes and then you're golden.
In Australia, all iPhones sold through the carriers are unlockable (Optus and Virgin are free, Vodafone charge an unlocking fee, not sure about Telstra and 3) whereas the ones at the Apple store are unlocked out of the box. - inactive, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1I didn't hear about it, but I'm glad you posted about the real issue. It still sucks that Apple isn't helping these users. They bought the phone (likely paid full price $800-1000).
- inactive, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1you're > your, softare > software.
Sorry, was sleepy. - bjornski, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1Sorry, I was using hacktivated and jailbroken as kind of a combination term there, implying unapproved unlocking. Yeah, my bad.
Maybe someone should make a chart. - bjornski, on 07/15/2009, -1/+2They weren't FORCED into anything.
Take the Nokia out of your ass. - bjornski, on 07/15/2009, -1/+2While not a huge supporter of the device myself, I agree with you. Unlocked and Jailbroken are totally different things, and continuing to use them as the same thing causes a lot of FUD problems.
- codelogic, on 07/15/2009, -1/+2minor typo: http://cydia.iphoneil.net
- CheatRZ, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1I have a Jailbroken + Activated iPhone 2G on T-mobile, with push fix that doesn't require a friend with AT&T.
- inactive, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1I thought the request had to be sent to Apple's APNS server. So, it's Apple blocking/ignoring(through the list) the messages. I find it disturbing that Apple can't (or wont) fix this issue; likely due to their agreement with At&t. Even if someone is on another network, they purchased the phone.
- Sashwan, on 07/15/2009, -4/+4Push is crap on the iPhone anyway.... my battery drains like crazy when it's on.
- bjornski, on 07/15/2009, -1/+1@gilbes
You can't buy a Chevy car with a Ford motor.
If you have an issue with "bundling", maybe you need to bring it up with your Congresscritters.
Businesses are free to team up with whoever they want. Why do you hate capitalism? Why do you want to dictate how they can sell their own product? - gilbes, on 07/15/2009, -1/+1Apple is doing all it can to FORCE those who want an iPhone to stick with AT&T and FORCING you to use their outrageous plan.
So yeah, forced is the correct word. - ThirdPrize, on 07/15/2009, -2/+2You snooze, you lose.
- meghalc, on 07/15/2009, -1/+1Thanks!
- Nitrodist88, on 07/15/2009, -4/+3Wow, I see what you did there.
- OrangeTide, on 07/15/2009, -4/+2if there are no problems then why are you commenting, this obviously doesn't concern you.
It's apparently hard for non-US citizens to recognize that there are issues that Americans would like to discuss without people injecting their ameriphobia into the discussion. - Barackalypse, on 07/15/2009, -7/+2Actually, the matter is quite simple, when you deal with close sourced software which exists for the purposes of subscription service lock in, you get screwed. Stick to open platforms like Google's Android OS.
- QuicsilverX, on 07/15/2009, -8/+1FAIL
- gilbes, on 07/15/2009, -8/+0The iPhone is great, if you like to be raped. Well maybe molested dis the right word. Forced or tricked in to doing something that you really don't want to do. And like many victims of sexual abuse, iPhone owners are in denial.
Yeah, that's ***** harsh. But so is the stupidity of any tech savvy person liking the iPhone over the other offerings out there. - rnawky, on 07/15/2009, -20/+6I unlocked my phone with an unlock code provided to me by at&t for free, and can run any third party app I choose.
Then again, I don't have a locked down piece of ***** like the iPhone
