- RadiantBeing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8People on Mac Pros will also benefit from this.

This could be very useful when Leopard ships with Front Row included in it. - Kale, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I wish I could dig this 300 times. I've got my main Mac Mini (Intel) at work, and a PPC Mac Mini that is hooked up to the TV, to use for movies and game emulation. Now I can use the remote/Front Row, plus thier launcher for my emulator.
:D Thanks a million Coder!! - jamsoft, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It would be great if they added support for the IR receiver that's already built in to Apple's Universal iPod Dock.
I posted a comment about it on their forums.
http://in.mypocket.com/index.php?showtopic=1168 - heyitsme23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Thats cool, I remember back when front row first came out we were all trying to use the hacks to use bluetooth cell phones as remotes (very lame, by the way)
Of course nothing beats using a macbook pro with remote, especially the IalertU program, its neat. - nato64, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Too bad the whole "Any Mac" part requires to buy one of 3 IR recievers I've never heard of. I already own a Keyspan IR receiver. They need to expand the number of supported IR Receivers before they can say "Any Mac" can run Front Row, imho.
- Rigbymatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Maybe apple will release a USB dongle/Remote kit for older macs when Leopard ships?
but that will probably only offer the same functionality as the regular remote, so this solution is actually better. - mikochu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm just waiting for that IR receiver to be back in stock... :D
- zzttrooper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It doesn't say "any" receiver, it just says "any Mac."
Any Mac can use any one of the supported receivers. I've got an Intel Mac so I've been using Mira already for a few weeks. But you've never heard of Microsoft Windows Media Center Edition? MCE? Those are the extra remotes it supports and those things are everywhere. Easily the most popular and readily available IR receivers on the planet.
By the way, they also said in their forum that they will be adding support for the keyspan receiver in the near future. Their UI even recognizes it now because someone posted a screenshot! - Coder0000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I agree. I realize that the Mac Pro isn't exactly in an HTPC form factor, but I'm still surprised at Apple's omission of the receiver/remote on their high end desktop. Given that you can control just about any application, and not just Front Row (with the help of mira), I would think that this would be very appealing to Mac Pro owners.

My point was simply that if all you're looking to do is use Front Row from say across the room where a keyboard would be inappropriate (a la Mac Mini plugged into HDTV in living room) and nothing more, buying a $20 keyspan RF remote and receiver is cheaper than buying this piece of software ($16) and an MCE remote and IR receiver (what, $40-ish?).
The Keyspan Front Row remote is an entirely separate product from the Apple remote and is in no way designed to work *with* it, but rather as a replacement for it - I don't quite understand your second sentence.
That said, I've just realized that the keyspan remote would probably work with mira as well - from my understanding, the Keyspans' keypresses emulate those of the official Apple remote, so any software designed for the Apple remote should work with the keyspan remote as well. - DPowers08, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If they could add the IRTrans USB Receiver to the list of supported hardware, I would buy this in a heartbeat. Its a good device, but the software it comes with is kind of flaky, so here's where Mira (hopefully) comes in.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1awesome!
- Coder0000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I would have to disagree about it being the same as what's already available. Clearly there are existing options like the ATI Remote Wonder that work with Front Row, but if you see the title of this story it's not about controlling Front Row but about using the Apple Remote.
The style, simplicity and form factor of the Apple Remote appeals to a lot of people -- and this is something that has not been available to legacy users until today. I also have a Remote Wonder and it's been useful, but when you're trying to use it for let's say controlling a powerpoint presentation or iTunes, it's simply too bulky with too many buttons.
Of course the best part is that mira allows you to control any application, so it opens up a whole lot more than just Front Row. - zzttrooper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Designed exclusively for the AppleĀ® Remote, mira takes it beyond Front Row..."
That's from their web site. I also don't see how an RF receiver is going to work with the Apple Remote. You can also control Front Row with a keyboard which most people already have, but that doesn't mean it's ideal. - onuo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0As you can pickup the xbox DVD playback kits very cheap now, does anyone know if doing this, would work...

...would it support the apple remote - I've being wanting something like this for ages for my mac mini. - Coder0000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Just noticed that the guys at twisted melon have updated their software so that you can use an external IR receiver and use the Apple remote on ANY mac! This is fantastic news for everyone with older macs. If you go to andrewescobar.com, you can directions on how to install front row on your PowerPC machine. Pick up an Apple remote and you're good to go!
- ryos, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2There's nothing new about this product. Salling Clicker had Front Row plug-in for a while (so you could use your cellphone as the controller), ATI Remote Wonder reportedly works with Front Row no problem. As mentioned above, Keyspan also has a couple of products that could work with Front Row. I believe Griffin AirClick USB also works with Front Row through a little hack.
Having said that, I still welcome new additions to the family of hardwares to work with Front Row. Keep'em coming! - manfesto, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I own one of these - http://www.keyspan.com/products/usb/errf1/
You can find them as low as $20 on sale, and they work great for Front Row. It's all they can do really (Front Row), but I think if all you want is to use Front Row on your older Mac with ease, the overall price would still be cheaper than buying this $16 piece of software + IR receiver.
