- morph3ous, on 10/12/2007, -6/+160That's true; however, the issue is that you should not have to do it that way. The only reason Firefox is blocked out is because the site is programmed poorly. This is state governement, and they should honestly make the minor change that would be required and update the script.
- wallclimber, on 10/12/2007, -5/+137morph3ous is right. Government web sites, in particular, should be accessable to all citizens, no matter what software they use.
We (the taxpayers) should NOT be burdened with having to find "work-arounds." - nonsequitor, on 10/12/2007, -36/+95Just change your user agent, problem solved. There's a Firefox plugin to do it. Next!
- LordProx, on 10/12/2007, -10/+53If only Microsoft had made a browser that worked according to spec there would not be a need to do "detection" and 2 sets of pages. Standard HTML/CSS and IE fixed version.
Place a curse on Microsoft.
http://i-curse.com/cursenow.php - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+43And that will help the three percent of us who actually would even know to do that. What about the 97% of unemployed people who don't know to do that and really need employment?
- rincebrain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22Your comment shows an amusing level of ignorance, especially given that Firefox's rendering engine is a descendant of Netscape's, and Firefox renders it fine.
The problem is not that the page renders incorrectly in Firefox, Mozilla, Safari, Opera, or anything else, but that a brain-dead script on the page prevents you from using it unless you pass its ancient check. - DigDugDigger, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23Government websites should validate. It should render on everything that supports standards, anything else wreaks of discrimination to me. Not legally, but I get that feeling.
- tempusrob, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22"Stop the browser wars!"
No, lt them rage on.
It's because of IE's blatant incompatibilities that crap like this happens at all. All webpages *should* be accessible to all users, and that means not taking liberties with the HTML and CSS specs. - HAKdragon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21In other words, you feel smug, about keeping smug users down?
- zonk3r, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20Applying for jobs... Voting... Something 'bout them new fangled computers in Florida.
I'm just sayin'. - vize, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20doesn't open in IE7 rc1 either....
but the error message does state that though...
"Supported browsers are:
1) Internet Explorer version 5.0 SP2 through 6 SP2
2) Netscape Navigator version 6.2 and higher
If you need further assistance, please contact the Service Center at 866 ONE-HRFL (866-663-4735). " - WorldBuilder, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16What you really oughtta do is send a paper resume to the state looking for a job as a web programmer so you can solve their web presence troubles...

Or because it was irrelevant. - theWaterboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10auchia = troll
Web designers can quite easily manage to design a site that permits the use of all browsers. In fact, blocking the use of an operating system, or browsers actually takes more effort than allowing them.
Why don't you learn something before you blow things out of your piehole - seventoes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10It works fine in ALL other browsers, it just wont let you unless you trick it.
- DigDugDigger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10It's not about supporting OS's. It's about supporting standards.
- TheSpook, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I tried exactly what you said, but since I'm running IE7b3, I was also rejected. I suppose I could uninstall IE7b3 and then reinstall IE6, but it's not worth it.
PS, you're lame. - cheesefan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Step 5: Notice not everyone runs on windows therefore can't use IE
Step 6: Destroy Computer
Step 7: Mature til' able to use digg like a real adult.
Step 8: Buy New Computer - thepxc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I don't _have_ IE...
- lordkenthegreat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Dosen't this violate Section 508 by prohibiting access by the disabled? (Last time I remembered, government web sites are supposed to be accessible to the disabled)
- martinkb, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Small problem, Avant uses the Internet Explorer layout engine internally.
- RailsAddict, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Tough to do if you're on a Mac....
Go ***** yourself :) - AbsoluteMSTR, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9So let the people who use mac and linux be screwed? I don't this being a problem for window users
- travuun, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Most of us would take that as a sign to get off Digg and go get a job.
- gooddoggytreat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10I called the number on there, since I'm from Florida and all. Also had a hastily prepared transcript to say how the government needs to be interoperable with software and technology, since us tax payers shouldn't need to put ourselves out of our own way just to use something we have a right to use. Hopefully they would have gave me the "Oh, that's just the way it is, sir.", so I could rant more, but their offices are closed. Darn. :)
- theWaterboy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10@nonsequitor -- easier said than done, and regardless this shouldn't be necessary. I suspect there are more nefarious reasons why Mac, and FF users can't access the site, exactly in the same ways as Mac and FF users can't access Disney's toontown, and why the same applies for msn.com mail.
- manitoba98xp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Please note that the user was using a Mac. Unless you mean IETab in Firefox in Parallels on Mac OS X (or Boot Camp), that's not a solution. Besides, I'm fairly confident that Firefox can render whatever NN6.2 can, so it shouldn't be necessary.
- EEMeltonIV, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I'll add this to the list of reasons I'm not moving back to Florida.
- jahLux, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9This is Florida - our Governor is a Bush,we are South of the Mason-Dixon line, we're rednecks and conservative. If your LIBERAL browsers can't access our web-site, so what? Go seek a job elsewhere - before I sic Katherine Harris on you!
- TheSpook, on 10/12/2007, -0/+61. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and, if the government entities receive Federal funding, the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, generally require that State and local governments provide qualified individuals with disabilities equal access to their programs, services, or activities.
2. Why would they WANT to exclude potentially qualified applicants from seeing their job postings?
3. I tried it in FF, and it didn't work. So I tried it in IE (which my version is IE7b3) and it essentially said my browser version was too high. I tried to remote to my machine with IE6 installed, but it was turned off at the time. Why so restrictive? Do they have IT jobs on this site? If so, are they trying to lock out the savvy in addition to the handicapped? WTF? - baraqiyal, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7It would take about 30 seconds on the server to get rid of the error redirect. Doesn't that make more sense than to make thousands of people setup browser spoofing?
- theWaterboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Everyone who reads this, and thinks this is a problem needs to send their 'webmaster' an email asking why. Positive suggestions to make a positive change!. Then do the same with toontown.com
- Elric1977, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Can't agree with you more, I use Safari, but Windows users can't use Safari, so go with the Fox.
- dbalaski, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7So -- the assumption is by Florida that the visually handicapped only use IE or Netscape.
This is something I think I can comment on -- having a blind sister (she was a surgeon before she went blind ). She is currently using XP, however after reading about the accessibility options in OS-X Leopard, she is considering on switching. (Especially since the best Blind screen reader on XP, called JAWS, is a piece of crap ).... I know a number of blind computer users thinking of making the switch for the same reason.
This site is typical government thinking though -- probably outsourced this site to lowest bidder. Someone should challenge them for their accessibility options. The laws are pretty specific (though most sites don't follow the rules ), it should light a firestorm... - TheSpook, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Or just support web standards to begin with...
- starmanjones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6ya its lame. you might be surprised how many microsoft bigots do this on purpose. i'm sure its less than it used to be but they would get indignant about being being IE only. maybe its just stupidity but how did it get this far without being noticed.
- thepxc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5According to this:
http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp
They are only supporting 55.5% of users. That's not a very significant majority.
Also: Firefox, according to that, has 26.4% and Mozilla has 2.1. Meanwhile, Netscape, the browser they _do_ support, only has 0.4%.
Now that that's out of the way, why don't you go
http://getfirefox.com
because maybe if you'd learn2browse you wouldn't be spewing ***** about made-up numbers. - AbsoluteMSTR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It's a 800 number, so everyone start calling!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Florida Sucks Ass.
Live with it. - trunkster, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8IE isn't really evil, it's just people being stupid not to know what they are doing that's the problem. That's why geeks tell everyone to use firefox so they aren't annoyed by everyone problems. This is just one reason, Firefox is a much better browser in every way.
- Heembo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Hey, maybe if enough of us call em to compain, maybe they will act?
If you need further assistance, please contact the Service Center at 866 ONE-HRFL (866-663-4735). - TheSpook, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5No, it's an 866 number.
- sebnukem, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@good night
And how am I supposed to install IE on an OS that is not Windows you ***** *****? - theWaterboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@lordkenthegreat -- I don't think it violates 508 because that deals with accessibility, not poor web design. :)
There SHOULD be a fine associated with any government institution blocking browsers that offer superior accessibility to the disabled though. - baraqiyal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5But this is a case where the programmers took extra time to make the page NOT work in some browsers. If they had not taken the effert to set up the redirect to the error page based on what browser you’re using, there wouldn’t even be a problem.
- radiofrequency, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Because Microsoft is convicted of felony violations (Sherman Antitrust), it is technically a federal requirement that government provide alternatives to using Microsoft products.
- glafira, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5This is not the first example of BROWSER-ISM, judging a person by his/her choice of browser.
- aliguana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Florida isn't alone. Back last year, The Jobcenter (UK govt thing where your average geezer looks for work) didn't work outside of I.E either. After user complaints and (I believe) newspaper articles, the site has now been rewritten to be friendly to the Fox.
- ChewyBass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4In case anyone hasn't noticed it doesn't work with IE7 as well. I work for the state and I cannot enter my time with IE7. I have to break out my laptop with IE6 in order to do so. This is by far not the only complaint with this system.
- jsusanka, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5morons - whoever wrote the site should seriously consider a career change.
